Very Very COOL!!! First a consideration when buying any portable/window a/c unit.
If the room is heavily shaded, you can reduce the BTU capacity by 10%.If the room is very sunny, you should increase the BTU capacity by 10%. If more than 2 people regularly occupy the room, add 600 Btu for each additional person.If the unit is for a kitchen, increase the capacity by 4,000 Btu/Hr.
Now with that said, on with about this particular unit.
Its definitely worth the cost. First it uses a simple vent through the window, which it comes with insulation, and etc to properly place it. It is truly portable as long as you have a window to vent it out, you can put the puppy anywhere. We've already had 3 days of 90 degree weather, yesterday being 94 degrees with heat index of 101 and in the 198 square foot room that I'm using it in currently, It was nice and comfortable. The room was also occupied by not only myself but my three children, had two computers (pentium 3 and pentium 4) going, and a home entertainment system going (television, receiver, & playstation were on).
Now the features of the unit.
Not only do I love the ability to open the window if I want to or to move the unit into another room, but I love how quiet it is. I was skeptical of whether it would truly be "library quiet", but it does live up to its name. You can sit and watch a movie at low volume and not even notice it running.
The timer feature is wonderful as well. It has an on timer that allows you to set it up to turn on at anytime from a half hour from now to twelve hours from now. I use this feature at bedtime or when we'll be running out for a couple of hours and it works great. It also has an off timer that allows you to set how long to let the unit run, again for up to 12 hours. They have a thing for 12 hours. ;)
The remote is well designed and has a nice lcd screen and they even put a little legend on it so you don't have to go to the manual to figure out what the little symbols on the screen are for. The unit even has a little spot on the back of it to hang the remote so you don't lose it. Which you don't want to do, because without the remote you only have what they call an aux mode, which sets fan to auto, temp at current temp, etc. The remote on this unit is essential. The remote has temp settings, fan settings, mode settings, and etc.
The unit requires no bucket to empty it sends all the water out the vent pipe in a/c mode. It does however require a bucket for dehumidify mode (if I understood the manual correctly).
The vent tube also has a insect guard and rain guard attachments to simplify things. Also it has easy slide out filters.
One last incentive I guess is that when the unit's compressor comes on there doesn't seem to be any noticeable power drain.
Some window units I've come across in the past would draw a bit of power when the compressor came on.
Did I mention its really quiet?? It is, honest. And it looks neat also.
