Product Description

It all starts with your brain: how you think, how you feel, how you interact with others, and how well you succeed in realizing your goals and dreams. When your brain works right, so do you. When it’s out of balance, you feel frustrated, or worse. Yet amid all the advice that bombards us daily about how to keep the rest of our body strong and healthy, we hear very little about how to keep the most complex and magnificent organ of all—the human brain—in top working order.

Based on the most up-to-date research, as well as on Dr. Daniel Amen’s more than twenty years of treating patients at the Amen Clinics, where he and his associates pioneered the use of brain imaging in clinical practice, Magnificent Mind at Any Age does exactly that. Dr. Amen shows how many of the traditional approaches to overcoming the mind-centered challenges that hold us back—try harder, work longer, find the sheer willpower—either do not work or may make our problems worse. The true key to satisfaction and success at any age is a healthy brain. By optimizing our brain function we can all develop these qualities of a magnificent mind enjoyed by the world’s most successful and happiest people:

• Increased memory and concentration
• The ability to maintain warm and satisfying relationships
• Undiminished sexual desire and performance
• Goal-oriented perseverance
• Better impulse control and mastery over potential addictions
• Free-flowing creativity and the ability to relax and enjoy life’s pleasures

To achieve this, as Dr. Amen explains here in clearly accessible language, we have a range of options available, including proper diet, natural supplements and vitamins, exercise, positive thinking habits, and, if needed, medication. In addition to revealing how we can all take advantage of such strategies to enjoy the benefits of a balanced and healthy brain at every stage of our lives, Dr. Amen also pinpoints specific ways to tailor behavior, nutrition, and lifestyle to deal effectively with common mental challenges such as memory problems, anxiety and depression, attention deficit disorder, and insomnia.

Whether you’re in the midst of a demanding career or are looking forward to an active and richly rewarding retirement, Magnificent Mind at Any Age can give you the edge you need to live every day to your fullest potential.

  • Its not all about pills, it's also about skills
Please consider reading this book, and take a few minutes to complete one of Dr. Amen's questionaires. Dr. Amen understands that not everybody can get a brain scan, so please read and follow the advice and you'll be on the road to a stable mood, and better working brain. Then reach out to others and help them also. At Aurora Counseling Center, we have had nothing but success with the insight gained from thousands of brain scans at the Amen Clinics. We can be much more specific and this allows us to be very individualized about treatment. The result? Our patients improve, and we can use medications only when absolutely necessary. Better yet, read the book, and then practice the 21 prescriptions for a better life today!

  • Daniel Amen Loves Brains!
In Magnificent Mind at Any Age, Daniel Amen lets the reader know how much he loves brains. He talks about "brain envy," for example--what happens when someone sees an image of another person's brain that is healthier than their own. He informs us that he has improved the look of his brain from when he was in his 30's to his present age in the 50's. (Elimination of aspartame, for one.)

Amen writes: "A balanced brain is the foundation for a life that is happier, healthier, wealthier, and wise...If you really understand how to develop and take care of your brain, your life will be better no matter what your age."

I found scary when he describes the brain as soft--like tofu--and vulnerable to injury. Amen writes that millions of people suffer from mild traumatic brain injuries and don't even know it and that the injuries cause emotional, behavioral and cognitive problems.

The doctor recommends a healthy diet, exercise, positive thought, avoiding a toxic environment, gratitude, meditation, little alcohol and caffeine and other common sense basics for the health of the brain. He also recommends fish oil and a daily multiple vitamin.

There is room for more information on each of the subjects above, but there wouldn't be room in a single book. For more information on a healthy diet, I recommend WHAT TO EAT. For more on reducing toxins in the home/office, clutter elimination (which leads to stress), meditation and making a home a sanctuary (for relaxation and health,) read the award winning book, HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT: BEAUTIFY, DETOXIFY & ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOME & YOUR PLANET.

Amen then recommends specific natural remedies for those suffering from ADD, anxiety and depression.

So far, so good. It's part II of the book I have some trouble with, as I feel it is too far-reaching and that Amen's suggestions are unlikely to make real change.

I will use the chapter on how to become a Maverick Thinker as an example. Amen considers himself a maverick (I know, you are thinking Palin and McCain...) According to Amen, a maverick is one who is an independent thinker. He believes that over control, dependence, anxiety and stress inhibit independent thinking. His strategies to help a person become a maverick include keeping brain healthy, work to be happy but work through tough times, and practice independent and personal responsibility.

Sounds good...but I just don't buy that someone who has always listened to others to form their own thoughts will read this and suddenly change.

There is much to be gained with from this book and I do recommend it.

  • If you have a brain, buy this book.
Finally, there is clear hope on the horizon for simple, common sense understanding of what brings the brain into greater balance and optimum function thanks to Dr. Amen's foundational work with SPECT imaging. I'm convinced that fifty years from now, Amen will be recognized as a principle founder in moving the practice of psychological assessment onto solid ground AND the pill-popping boom of the last decade will be an unfortunate page in our history. Buy this book and get ahead of the curve!...more info

  • The timing of this book is great.
I just got this from the store and I skipped a few sections so keep that in mind. I thought it was pretty good. It felt a little robotic compared to the only other two books I've read like this, but that shouldn't keep you from reading this because despite that, it was really pretty good. Maybe I should have let the info sink in a little before writing this review, but my first reaction is that it's insightful and informative. For a few years now at least, I've started feeling a little like assimilating new information is getting harder for me to do. I find myself having to reread sentences and whole paragraphs in order to get a good grasp. At first I thought that maybe I was just reading more complex stuff than I used to or something like that, but it happens even reading the newspaper now, so I started to understand that there was more to it than simply the complexity of the info. The second I saw this book it caught my attention and the timing was great. It helped me to realize that there are things you can do to keep your brain functioning in good order despite the fact that your brain is getting older and less elastic. Well I guess the point is, you can change that by doing things to prevent your brain from losing its elasticity and efficiency. This book has a bunch of really good ideas on how to do that. So you don't have to do just one thing, there are many choices and you can mix and match them to your preference. I would recommend reading this book even if its just to get those ideas from it. The only other books I've read about brains and emotion stuff were, Tao Cycle Therapy: Natural Happiness via Self Directed Cure for Chronic Anxiety & Depression [Updated 2008 3nd Edition] and Compared to those two this one was also a solid choice along with them. I guess I've gotten lucky in those choices so I thought this might be helpful to give someone else some of that good fortune. I hope it helps.

A valuable brain questionaire is provided to help

  • Keep your brain fresh
I'm a huge proponent of natural strategies, of which there are numerous, and Dr. Amen covers quite a few of them. If I have a problem with this book in this area, it's only that his exclusion of exposure therapies, and his minimization of basic psychodynamic functions, or even philosophic, or existential methods, seems to imply their irrelevance. That said, I believe we are all well aware by this point, that there are likely as many strategies for emotional issues as there are potential instigators of them. And with regard to the ones chosen for inclusion is this book, the author does a wonderful job of presenting them. The herbs and vitamins for example, are well covered, and convincing. His coverage of anxiety and depression issues is (as usual) insightful. The doctor's passion and convictions in these areas are, as I've often said about Amen, honorable. I suppose my general sense is that he's not trying to rattle any braches. He stays well on point and doesn't diverge much from his conventional approach, which is both soothing, and thoughtful.

I feel as though I'm being quite bland in my assessment here, but the intent is to express, possibly, the stability of his message. His writing is serious and compassionate at once. He's not trying to get anyone all fired up, he's just presenting his case as fluidly and consistently as he always does. This isn't a frivolous book for the casually depressed, or the mildly anxious. It's about real people with real suffering, to which the good doctor speaks with compassion and clarity

The big inspiration in this book comes from the promise of flexibility of mind, despite the potential rigidities of age. This hopeful approach to keeping the brain fresh is the heart of the book. And he presents his case here more convincingly than I've seen elsewhere. There is no doubting the doctor's contributions in this area, nor his enthusiasm for them.

  • Some Palatable Bits; Needs More Salt
I have been reading so many brain, depression, happiness books over the past several years that I decided to finally post some of my views. One important observation is to really check out what the author's agenda MIGHT be. As more than a few of the previous reviewers have pointed out, Dr. Amen's books are good advertisements for his clinics. There is some good information to be found here, but most people only read one or two books on a particular subject and then move on to another subject. It would be unfortunate if Dr. Amen's books were a primary source for one's information.
I am recommending just a few of the excellent authors in the brain-stress-happiness area: Daniel Gilbert, Richard O'Connor, Daniel Goleman, Deborah Tannen, Martin Seligman, Jon Kabat-Zinn...more info
  • Magnificent Book
An excellent book on mental health care. Good and practical advices, many examples and he has written from his clinical practice. I have read it and still am reading it again to fully absorb and implement certain good advices.

I have started taking omega 3, do more exercises and cut down on coffee (caffeine!). Well....it's tough as coffee is my favourite drink. Life have not been easy for me as through out my life the symptoms of ADD was prevalent (but I didn't know it until 2 years ago). Anyway, I am 46 years old.

I hope to develop a maverick mind from the advices given by Dr. Amen (and others) or at least "good enough mental strength" to live a reasonably successful life. I am a struggling Accountant! (should have done psychology).

Thanks Dr. Amen. More magnificent books to come?

  • Interesting but want a little more information
    Hi All-

I picked up Dr. Amen's book at a bookstore and found it interesting but a little dry. It takes several chapters to make its point and to understand what it is you need to do to preserve your brain. I found, however, Dr. Amen's recommendations to be sound, following recommendations that are well know or common sense. I would have liked a little more information on why Dr. Amen places so much importance on SPECT Scans.

If you are looking for a lifestyle or diet plan, I found The Anti-Alzheimer's Prescription: The Science-Proven Plan to Start at Any Age by Dr. Vincent Fortanasce to be more useful and easy to follow. The book clearly gives a 4-Step lifestyle plan from the beginning and the author offers personal stories and experiences making it more interesting to read and insightful.

    Hope this helps!...more info
  • A Road Map For Healthy Living
This book was easy to read and just packed with information. Once you read this book you will never feel the same way again about what you eat and how you feel. I sincerely wish that this book could be taught in every high school in the country. If this book was a mandatory course in school, our national health costs would drop significantly.

This book not only describes the nutritional requirements of our bodies, but it explains: How our bodies work, What our bodies need, What we should eat, How it works to make us healthy, What supplements are available, and what the resulting nutritional benefits are (health, happiness, energy, concentration, improved brain function, and natural nutritional ways to mitigate against autism, Alzheimer's, ADHD, and Parkinson's Disease.

We've heard for years that good nutrition will make us healthy, but this book explains precisely not only what good nutrition is (and it names names), but how and why it affects the body (for example, regarding energy, we all want more of it but this book tells us what energy is, where it is located in our bodies (a great surprise to me), and how it works. The information in this book represents a fundamental requirement for how to be happy & healthy as we go through life - Literally a road map for healthy living....more info
