Product Description

The verdict is in: those simple carbs we've been living on are killing us. For good health, we've got to get our blood sugar under control and stop the incessant cravings. Or so says Dr. Arthur Agatston, author of The South Beach Diet. The first half of the book details the science behind the diet. Most of the explanations revolve around why things you thought were healthy?-orange juice, wheat toast, carrots?-are actually evil. To avoid blood sugar surges, Agatston created a modified carbohydrate plan, recommending plenty of high-fiber foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats, while cutting bread, rice, pastas, and fruits. Major differences from other diets include a lack of concern over portion size and a serious indifference to exercise. Feeling full while on a diet is a beautiful thing, but it seems odd that a cardiologist buries his exercise recommendations in a solitary sentence.

The last half of the book covers his three-stage plan; daily diets are mixed with recipes, some of which are from South Beach restaurant chefs. The most restrictive period lasts just two weeks, enough time to stabilize your urges and lose a few pounds; stage two adds fruits and a handful of other carbs, while stage three is meant to last the remainder of your life, with occasional lapses for white bread or birthday cake. While the diet is sound, the book could be better organized. The first half mixes scientific study with anecdote in a seemingly random way, while the mix of meal plans and recipes can be confusing. Still, the recipes are varied and tasty, and you'll never feel deprived, unless you currently happen to live by bread alone. --Jill Lightner

For years, cardiologist Arthur Agatston, M.D., urged his patients to lose weight for the sake of their hearts, but every diet was too hard to follow or its restrictions were too harsh. Some were downright dangerous. Nobody seemed to be able to stick with low-fat regimens for any length of time. And a diet is useless if you can't stick with it.

So Dr. Agatston developed his own. The South Beach Diet isn't complicated, and it doesn't require that you go hungry. You'll enjoy normal-size helpings of meat, poultry, and fish. You'll also eat eggs, cheese, nuts, and vegetables. Snacks are required. You'll learn to avoid the bad carbs, like white flour, white sugar, and baked potatoes. Best of all, as you lose weight, you'll lose that stubborn belly fat first!

Dr. Agatston's diet has produced consistently dramatic results (8 to 13 pounds lost in the first 2 weeks!) and has become a media sensation in South Florida. Now, you, too, can join the ranks of the fit and fabulous with The South Beach Diet.

  • Almost perfect
This is the only diet that I have ever been able to lose weight on. My favorite part is that you lose it fast and it comes off the belly first! The first phase might seem tough and a little boring at first, but after a few days you will be in love with it! I was amazed to see that only after the first week I completely lost all my cravings for junk food including my favorites: pizza and ice cream! I only wanted to eat healthy food, especially veggies, which usually made me gag before. My only complaint is that this diet is a little expensive and requires a lot of cooking, but I am about to buy some of the other South Beach Diet books which I have heard have less expensive options and less cooking. I would definitely recommend this diet because it doesn't just cut calories like most diets, it's actually healthy, and it is a scientific diet in the way it is designed to fix your blood sugar and re-train you to make healthier choices....more info
  • outstanding diet
I always had problems with weight loss. I'm one of those women who lose weight with great difficulty. Tried all sorts of diets but all were fruitless. Using Agatston's diet I finally managed to lose about 5 pounds. This diet works even if you are as problematic as I am in losing weight. ...more info

  • This Diet Works!
What separates this diet book from others is that it works. The South Beach Diet is a low carb diet, but it is designed to be easily integrated into your normal eating. The recipes are delicious, there are simple substitutes and you don't end up with cravings that cause you to go off the diet. My mother has tried many, many diets over the years. I gave her a copy of the book, fixed a few meals for her to show how easy they could be adapted to her eating habits and she lost 20 pounds. She particularly likes the recotta cheese with Splenda and a touch of vanilla as a desert. There is a new diet book out every week, but if you want a diet that really works then choose this one! ...more info
  • Diet is what you eat, not something you have to suffer through!
Dr. Agatston really opened my eyes to changing the way I eat. He is totally right that we should not be constantly dieting. What needs to happen is permanent changes to the way we eat so we never have to "diet" again. Believe me the first two weeks are hard, but once you get past that you will thank him for changing your life. Say good bye to dieting and hello to healthy living, feeling great, and being able to eat like a normal person. No one should have to starve to look good....more info
  • The South Beach Diet
If you can't stick to the Atkins diet then this one will be even more of a challenge because with Atkins you get to eat higher fat contented foods where as with South Beach you have to choose the lower-fat, lower-calorie versions of the food you get to eat on the Atkins, I would recommend starting with Atkins(the strictest low carb plan) then after induction phase, try South Beach's induction then phases 2&3 shouldn't be too much of a problem to stick to....more info
  • This book is a must have for anyone, overweight or not!
This book is extremely informative and helpful. It is thorough, well written and even humorous at times. It is not a boring read. You will be captivated throughout and learn things that will likely save your life in addition to allowing you to lose weight at the same time. The name of the book is misleading as it is not really a diet book. The book is focused on improving health and preventing a future heart attack by teaching the reader about their body and the food digestive process. The loss of weight is a side affect. It gives a list of foods to enjoy and foods to avoid at 3 different stages or phases. It also has recipes for the different stages. One thing it lacks is a shopping list for the different weeks. This oversight makes it difficult to manage the recipes. You have to look at each day's recipes for the time frame you are shopping for and figure out what food you need to purchase, add up the quantities needed (because many recipes use the same foods), etc. It would be much simpler if the food shopping lists were already prepared by week. Even without the shopping lists, the book is a must have for everyone, even those who feel they are not overweight. The health information the book provides is useful for anyone and makes the cost of the book almost trivial....more info
  • More than a diet - a new way to look at food for life
This book and the three supplements make this diet an adventure into finding new foods and new recipes for the foods we all love while we lose weight at a wonderful rate. After four weeks, I had lost 16 pounds and my wife lost 10 pounds, and we are continuing to lose. She and I are thoroughly enjoying reading the recipes, preparing them and tweaking them to more closely fit our taste for the next time we prepare the dish.

The first book, the one that introduces the concept, has 107 pages that set your mind for the ease with which one can actually lose weight and keep it off. The next 187 pages are crammed with recipes, some created by noted chefs. The other books are supplementary and add variety to the meals and dishes.

It is marvelous to follow a diet that does not require keeping track of calories and fat, sugar and carb grams. Just prepare the suggested meals and watch the waist shrink....more info
  • This book helped me to lose 35 lbs
I finally bit the bullett and decided to do something about my weight. I never had gotten really serious before. Although I had a baby and really hated myself. I got the book and lost 15 lbs in the 1st 2 weeks. I didn't cheat. I went on to do phase 1 for 4 weeks (although I didn't lose much for the weeks 3, and 4) Once I added the good carbs back in my diet (not that often) I began to see more weight just melt away. I lost 35 lbs in 10 weeks. I hope this helps someone who really is just determined to lose some weight. Lord knows it helped me!...more info
  • This Diet Is Doable
The diet gave me the impression I could eat as much as I wanted, as long as I ate the right things. I don't think so. The diet still requires moderation and cutting back on portions. For me giving up bread, beer and deserts, then cutting back on fats and pastas (which I love), is making a differnce, about 5 pounds in two weeks. Have been experimenting with the less fatty (good & expensive) types of steaks for the leaner and cheaper cuts, and trying to tenderize them. Still the easiest way to get the protein. The one glass of red wine, is real easy to end up being two or three. But probably better than 2 or 3 beers. I would like to get off my meds, the weight loss will be the (bonus) deserts that I miss. Good Luck. ...more info
  • Love this book!
My Dr. suggested this diet to me after coming to him several times with no luck on other diets. So far, I've lost 15 1/2 pounds and I've only been on the diet 3 weeks.

The diet is not for everyone. ALWAYS check with your family doctor first. If your Doctor ok's it and you follow what the author says and keep in close contact with your doctor. You can lose weight and be healthy.

  • Very good way of life
There's a lot of good reviews for this book "The South Beach Diet" already written. So I haven't much to offer other than my success from following it this year. From Januay to October of this year (2007) I lost 70 lbs by changing my eating habbits and way of life to the guidelines explained in this book. Instead of just telling you what you should eat, it explains a lot of the "why". Knowing this information gave me the knowleged I needed to finally lay down the burgers, beer and pizzas and starting eating healthy food and (just as important) start adding excercise to my daily routine. If you want to loose weight in a heart-healthy way that also helps avoid the onset of diabetes, this is a very good diet to follow. ...more info
  • I Lost 15 Pounds in Two Weeks, My Friend Lost Nearly 20 lbs.
I highly recommend this book and the program/diet if your doctor agrees you are healthy and that your doctor agrees that its guidelines will benifit your present health. I find that I can control my eating with South Beach because I never feel truly hungry, I nearly always feel satisfied so I'm not thinking about food, instead I'm thinking about other things in life that I want to accomplish and I can focus on something other than my next meal. FREEDOM is a good word for the South Beach Diet, it will set you free in many ways that will enhance your life. Many people where I work have used these guidelines and were living proof to me that it's possible to reduce and maintain. Many of the others at work who followed South Beach have maintained anywhere from 1 year to 5 years and they look fantastic. Their weight fits their frames....more info

  • This is the only weight loss method that has ever worked for me.
Nothing I have ever bought on Amazon has compelled me to write a review like this book. I have tried all diets. I have many many exercise videos. I have tried eating small healthy portions plus working out two times a day morning and evening and I never lost more than 1 pound in a month. Sometimes I even ended up gaining. I did the South Beach diet for two weeks and it was very difficult because I am a pasta/bread lover! Needless to say, it was very difficult and I had horrific cravings. But trust me, it gets easier as the days go by. I could now be on Phase 2 but I read somewhere that if you feel comfortable staying on Phase 1 for another week you should to really rid yourself of the cravings and I have. There is a lot of temptation around me all the time but I have not faltered yet. I lost 10 pounds in the first two weeks of the diet. That has moved me to start exercising and continue eating healthy so I recommend it to those that have tried everything...this might be the weight loss method for you too....more info
  • Lost the 10 pounds I needed to lose
I wasn't obese or even "fat" before I started the diet, but I had a gut that I wasn't too proud of. The gut wasn't even that bad, but I wanted to lose it. I bought this book and set a target weight loss of 10 pounds.

The first phase was tough because I am not used to a no-carb diet. I kind of got sick of steak, chicken and salmon easily, as well as balsamic vinigarette (however you spell that). The recipes are pretty good and give a lot of taste with very little to choose from.

After the first week and a half, I lost the 10 pounds I aimed for and now I am happily in the 2nd phase and I still cheat every couple of days.

I find that this diet pushes more "control" over what you eat. Although I am 2nd phase, I have had fries a couple of times, but in very small quantities and I don't feel guilty and I don't feel hungry either.

This diet also got me to start using more spices in what I cook. Now I have about 3 different spices on my steak or burger just for the fun of it.

I think I am going to stay in "phase 2" for as long as possible because I feel very comfortable in it. If I "cheat" once in a while, I think I;ll be fine. I lost the weight and I am keeping it off (so far).

I highly recommend this diet plan if you need to change your eating habits and want to shed a few pounds at the same time....more info
  • A Diet plan with great food and it WORKS!!
Love it, love it, LOVE IT!! It's easy, a great variety of foods, great recipes, easy to follow plan, and if you go hungry you're doing something wrong. Actually, during phase one, couldn't finish half the food....I swear you feel like you're cheating half the time (and they even let you cheat once in awhile). Lost 40 lbs and 6 sizes in 3 months!! Have recommended it to everyone we know!!...more info
  • It's a cookbook
I looked at this book for research purposes, not really interested in going on a diet right now... my general impression: The diet itself can be basically summarized in a page or two (it's practically on the back cover), so, really, you might think about borrowing the book versus buying for diet purposes, and writing the three phase plan down. The science behind the plan is, as most of dietetics, under question and debate, although there does seem to be a consensus that the American addiction to simple carbohydrates is a health problem. What is more interesting about the book is that a large chunk of it is devoted to recipes based on the phase of diet, a few which I have tried and seem to be worthwhile. Other people must also think so, as there have been spinoff south beach diet cookbooks that have also been successful (haven't tried them yet). So, one might consider purchase for that reason....more info
  • Easy Diet and it Works
I'm not one to follow diets usually, because I always believe in eat less/exercise more. Unfortunately that doesn't work, because when I exercise more, I eat more. When a friend recommended the South Beach I decided to read up about the philosophy first before jumping in. I had always been raised to think that carbohydrates are good and fats are bad. What Dr. Agaston explains is that there are good carbs and bad carbs, good fats and bad fats. The South Beach diet educates you on what is good for you, and what causes weight gain and harmful blood chemistry.

As for the mechanics of the diet, it is really quite simple. I never followed their menus, or their recipes. I just looked at the allowed foods and made up my own meals. I really hate to count anything, document anything or look things up. This diet doesn't require any of that, unless it is to count the number of peanuts you should have for a snack (which is really quite simple to do). It also doesn't require purchasing special meals, or drinks, or anything. Just follow the principles, adapt to your own tastes and off comes the weight.

There are 3 phases to the diet, all explained and easily understood. The book also explains the physiology of the diet, and why harmful swings in blood sugar can cause problems, including overweight, diabetes and heart disease. Once you get your blood sugar levels under control, you do not get cravings anymore or hunger pangs in between meals. It is really ironic that being on this diet does not make you hungry. In fact, starving yourself, or being hungry is counterproductive, since the key is to maintain a steady blood sugar state, so that you do not experience the feast/famine cycle which causes overeating, as well as overstorage of fat....more info

so has my blood sugar.Being a diabetic type two for many years has

endocronologist was amazed at my A1C improvement that she took me off
of the diabetic oral drugs. She also praised my weight loss and lower

  • My Thoughts
I wanted to chime in on this plan. I was a skeptic from the start, but 2 not 1, 2 doctors recommended this to me, (and specifically said, not atkins) I thought I would give it a shot.

I've never done anything besides trying to run or burn the weight off in some way. No diets.

    Here's how it played out:

1st 4 days was tough. You have to stick to it, no matter what. I was grumpy, but I knew that it was my body telling me it wanted the same junk it had been getting for the past 20 years. (I'm 39) No beer, no bread, no sugar. You're basically kicking sugar people and that is what makes this first part so hard. It's in everything we eat.

After the first 4 days, things leveled out and the next 10 were O.K. I'm not gonna lie, it wasn't nirvana, it was just o.k. What made it nice was the weight drop. 5 the first week, 9 the next for a total of 14 lbs in 2 weeks. May not sound like much but I'm 5'7" and was 186 when I started. I carry weight well, but you could see it in my face, and that's where it started to show, and of course my beltline.

You eat a lot of salads - and you should. You drink a lot of water - and you should. You start to control just how much and "think" about what you are putting in your body. That's the key.

Skeptics might say, "well, sure - of course." But the thing for me was "thinking" about it again.

After the 2 weeks were up it got easier, and I lost another 5 lbs. That put me down in the "Regan administration" years as far as beltlines go.

So yeah - I was happy.

    --- down side --

This is a hard diet to maintain unless you are totally committed. You have to watch what you eat all the time or the flood gates could come open. I just bought my first house, and it was a brutal experience. The diet fell off the table and I was back to my old ways in no time. up 10 lbs to boot.

The people around you have to buy in too. No more white pasta, no more white rice, cut out the beer on a daily basis, bread - whole grain only. This part can be tough.

Personally, I thought the whole thing was worth it, and I'm back to phase one trying to reel in the damage from the home buying debacle. It really won't take me that long to get things back in order, and I know I had another 5lbs in me from my lowest weight. I also did not exercise regularly and I'm a believer in that. You have to have both.

    hope this helps

Other things that make it hard is the spouse. My wife was not a believer, and needed to see it for her self. She's convinced that it works, and while she doesn't want to do the 2 weeks with me, she will go along with the phase 3 portion....more info
  • it works....
After regular diet and exercise didn't work for me, my doctor recommended that I give this diet a try. I absolutely hated it, as I have a serious sweet tooth, but it really worked for me. I lost almost 10% of my body weight. Phase 1 was brutal, but I stuck with it and it really paid off. I slowly quit the diet after I lost the weight, and the weight has mostly stayed off. This worked when nothing else did!
PS - This diet is really friendly for dieters who need to stick to a gluten free diet! ...more info

  • Get Sally Fallon's book instead
I did the South Beach diet, and you can definitely lose weight with it (at least in the first phase, which is tough to maintain); but a good diet has to consider much more than that. You need saturated fats, which Agatston has us avoid. He's right that we should stay away from processed foods and sugary rubbish, but there's nothing new here. A better way to lose weight is to do some regular fasting, or at least some kind of cutting back of how much you eat, and keep a traditional diet, such as advocated by Sally Fallon or Jordan Rubin.

I've just purchased my sixth gift copy of The South Beach Diet. No, I don't go around sending it to people who I think need to drop some pounds. But when a friend wants to know how I lost weight or why we aren't eating potatoes or bread, and they seriously indicate an interest in following new food-eating patterns, I send them a copy. My husband and I bought a copy three years ago and embarked on our South Beach food adventure. Within six months, I had lost 40 pounds, he had lost the ten that was his goal, and while I have gained part of mine back after slipping off the path, I am now back on it to drop 10 lbs.

Dr. Agatston gives enough philosophy behind his diet suggestions, and his fairly rigorous first two weeks is succcessful quickly enough, that we found it easy to continue. And I can honestly say, I never felt hungry....more info

  • Weight Falls Off-Great for post baby weight loss, even when breastfeeding
This diet is one of the easiest diets I have ever done. It's healthy and basically high protein, lots of veggies and a few treats along the way. I don't use any kind of fake fats nor fake sugar because of the danger of using these products, so I basically either skipped these suggestions during the two week initial diet program and afterwards made baked organic apples with plain no sugar homemade whip creame or raw organic apple or some other kind of OG fruit that was high in fiber such as dates which are also sweet and take the sweet tooth edge off. I didn't gain a ton of weight during my pregnancy. However the last 10 lbs have just been sticking around. I am also breastfeed and with the elimination of all whites, white sugar, white flour, white rice the weight is just falling off. And it hasn't caused any problems in my 7 month old exclusively nursing daughter. This is a totally "doable" diet. ...more info
  • WOW!!!
    What: South Beach Diet
    Start Date: 6/30/2008
    Beginning weight: 256 lbs
    Today's Date: 8/31/2008
    Current weight: 224 lbs
TOTAL POUNDS LOST: 32 lbs in 2 mos.

I heard of the SBD many years ago when it was first introduced. Like every other fad diet, I dismissed it without even giving it a second glance. "They never work," I said, and went about my happy carb-filled and FAT life. I have always been heavy, and my famliy is full of big people, so losing weight hasn't ever been encouraged at home.
I was raised on lots of bread, pasta, potatoes and fattening carbs. I NEVER drank water. I ate whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted, and it left me feeling depressed and hopeless. I hated how I looked in everything--even though I loved clothes and fashion--because of my weight. I had tried several times to lose weight, to restrict myself, and would average 6-8 lb losses before giving up and reverting back to my old ways.
June of '08 I actually found a copy of The South Beach Diet outside in a shopping cart at the grocery store. I picked it up and flipped through it, threw it in the car and thought I might read it. Someday.
It sat around the house for a while before I finally picked it up and gave it a go.
Immediately I thought, WOW, is this the answer?
and then right after that: "YEAH, RIGHT."
But, negativity aside, I read the book and decided to give it a try.
It made total and perfect sense why I was fat--the book explains the reason behind it and the why and how, and the proof is undeniable.
I completely cut out bread, potatoes and pasta, and anything with sugar in it. I followed Phase 1 pretty well for about 4 weeks, and in that time alone, lost about 18 lbs. I would sometimes walk for 10 or 15 minutes here or there, on my lunch at work, or at home around the block, but I wasn't making any real efforts as far as exercise went. However, it was so much more than what I used to do, I started seeing a difference in how I felt and looked almost immediately.
As each week passed by and the number on the scale steadily decreased, I found myself feeling more and more energetic, and committed to the new "lifestyle".
It doesn't feel like you're on a diet, it feels like you're just being HEALTHY.
I have never been able to stay on a diet before, but the South Beach Diet is so easy to follow, and the results are so remarkable, I can't even stop myself now!
It took me a while to get into the swing of things, but now that I have been doing it, it is natural to me.
I was once a skeptic of this and other fad diets, but now I am recommending it to everyone.
Even with minimal exercise, to date, I have lost a substantial amount of weight and the best part is--I don't feel hungry or deprived--EVER!!!
I really have to give it to Dr. Agatston because even though I have only lost a fraction of the amount of weight I want to lose, I know that it is something I will acheive because of this diet.
I stepped on the scale today and had to smile: 224lbs.
I haven't weighed that since college (sadly!).
I know I still have a long way to go, but I also know that I will make it, and all my thanks goes to Dr. Agatston and his book The South Beach Diet.
I urge anyone who is fed up with being overweight, and fed up with diets, to BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It really changed (and IS changing) my life, everyday.
I think it can do the same for you too.

It works if you work it!!!!

I did not want to cook two different meals so I joined him in the diet. What a wonderful surprise....he's lost approx. 10 pound and I've lost 13. What's even better.....his glucose count has gone down, almost to "normal" levels....more info
