Product Description
In many ways, The pH Miracle is reminiscent of an earlier generation of diet books. Much of the focus is on an intestinal cleansing program, followed by a diet that is 70 to 80 percent vegetables, coupled with a tremendous selection of supplements that authors Robert and Shelley Young recommend to everyone, no matter what their age, gender, or state of health. The Youngs point their fingers at candida as a main culprit in the poor health of many people. Unfortunately, they back up their claims with only vague references, such as "a 1991 study" and "a leading cancer researcher." Many readers may wish for more specific evidence, but instead will have to make do with enthusiastic recommendations, alphabetized lists of vegetables, and pleasing chapters with vegetarian recipes that taste good no matter how you feel about the diet as a whole. Sprinkled throughout the book are short testimonials of people who were able to reverse cancer, improve their digestion, and lower their cholesterol by following these recommendations, and it's hard to argue with the cholesterol-lowering results that a 70 percent vegetable diet will achieve. Still, the medical value of much else in the book remains hotly contested, and as always, it's wise to check with your doctor before starting off in search of miracles. --Jill Lightner

Customer Reviews: - Essential to your Health!
You will not regret buying this book -- it is one of the better ones out there. There are "doable" steps to bringing your body into balance, building into a flexible and tasty diet. I had a condition doctors said would never change (in my blood), but through bringing my body into a healthy pH, the condition disappeared. If you really want vibrant health, you must take your body's condition seriously and educate yourself -- start making changes, no matter how small. You will only wonder what took you so long!
I also recommend, "Your Body's Many Cries for Water."...more info - A Self Help Book You Can Use
Dr. Young has put the many pieces of the self-help, health care puzzle together for everyone to understand and use immediately. His facts are simple, when your blood is acid that fosters disease, when your blood is slightly alkaline, health is restored. Dr. Young book basically tells us to eat 70-80% vegetables with 70-80% of those raw. He recommends you clean your system with 4 quarts/liters of pure water per day. Once you are healthy, an ounce of protein at a time would be ok. There is much more to understand and this simple description does not replace reading the wealth of information in his excellent book. I have been a chiropractor for 30 years. I have a PhD in nutrition. Much of this is not new, just put together well. I find this information the most helpful in 40 years of studying (and teaching college level students for 17 years). I only state my background to rebut the detractors who have written reviews against this book. After seeing thousands of patients, I understand first hand what health care poviders know, people will not change their ways unless they think they are dying and then it is hard to get them to take better care of this miracle of a body. I follow Dr. Young's book with excellent results. Family and friends are having excellent results and I am buying more copies to share with yet more family members and friends who have health problems that persists. You only have to look at the current state of health of the American public. Disease is rampat no matter what name you give it. We all know those who have passed-on with dis-ease is many organ systems, why the dis-ease? Restoring alkalinity to the system just makes sense. The bottom line is if you are sick and tired of being sick and tired you could try Dr. Young's plan to see if can restore your health. Do not take my words or the words of anyone else, your health and life may be in the balance. As Dr. Young describes, your urine should be slightly acid or neutral. Buy litmus paper at a drug store and check yourself for acidity. How acid are you? For about the cost of a fast food meal, Dr. Young's book may be the best investment you make in your quality and quantity of life. Three other very self-helpful books I use in conjunction with Dr. Young's book are, Eat Right 4 Your Type by Peter D'Adamo, naturopathic physician, The Pulse Test by Arthur Coca, M.D., and Bloodtypes Bodytypes and You by Joseph Christiano. Only you may be able to discover what helps you if you have a health problem that persists. Hopefully the information in one or more of these books will help you:) ...more info - WHAT I THINK ABOUT THE PH CONCEPT
The PH Miracle is a very good book, easy to understand, but to put into practice is another thing. I live in France and most of the products mentioned in the book are hard to find or the health food stores are not located in practical areas. Fresh vegetables and fruits are easy to find, but French agriculture use many pesticides and fertilizers, so... Ideally, I would love to be able to become a vegetarian, but I think I would need lots of time to transition and it is quite difficult with family to change things at home. The PH Miracle is an ideal for me. ...more info - The book for perfect health

if you are serious about being healthy, or just educating yourself about nutrition i can certainly advise that you buy this book. Follow its advice and you will feel and look amazing. i had a friend turn me on to it and we are both loyal followers....more info - Theoretical ideas, impossible life style
I ordered this book based on a conversation with one of his fanatical devotees who claimed him to be the next Jesus. I tried the diet, but found it to be impossible to do. It is the most draconian diet I've ever seen and I've seen a lot in my 59 years.
I even agreed to speak to the guru himself, who charges $10.00 a minute for a phone consultation. He must be a very modest guy to charge such inexpensive costs for the privilege of hearing him impart his wisdom.
While there is some truth to his advice about nutrition, much of it depends on whether you believe what he says. For example, he says to avoid corn because "it has mycotoxins." I read exhaustively on the Internet for information lending credence to this tenet, and found nothing to prove that corn consumption will place the consumer at risk for mycotoxin poisoning. Likewise, his advice on meat consumption, which claims that all meat carries a host of "microforms." Although I am a total propenent of a natural lifestyle consisting of abundant vegetables, Young's theory forbids all fruit, condiments of any type including vinegar, pickled foods, cereals, dairy products of any kind including eggs, meat of any kind, etc., etc., etc., ad nauseam. The diet is impossible to follow, I repeat, unless you are a complete fanatic....more info - Makes me want to learn more about Dr. Young's alkaline diet.
Its written for the layman to understand. I enjoy his common-sense approach to eating the alkaline vs. acidic diet. Offers more info, and supplements to aid the health-concerned reader....more info - Acid/base theory interesting... watch out for MLM
I found this book to be very interesting and easy to read. Like some of the other critical reviewers, I wish the author had more sound credentials. But, as with any kind of "alternative" way of thinking, you'll have plenty of naysayers and classically trained professionals who say anything that hasn't been researched to death and written up in some kind of medical journal is hogwash.
What I found helpful about this book is how the author laid out a "Transition" plan. If you are the type of person who wants to move away from animal products (meat, dairy, eggs) and sugar and not have to do it all cold turkey, this is an excellent format to follow. It's realistic, advising each transition could take up to 6 weeks, which makes perfect sense. Anyone trying to change a habit needs to make the change and stick with it for a minimum of 30 days before a new habit is formed. Some of the transitions will be easier for some people than others... for instance I would have no problem eliminating dairy products but would have more trouble with transitioning away from pasta made with white flour.
Unlike some reviews here, I didn't think the author spent much time highlighting his own line of products. He certainly didn't reference them throughout the book. However, he did find ways to sneak his stuff in there without you realizing it and you ended up finding your way to the multi-level marketing business for his products. I'll give an example. In the supplementation chapter, he discusses finding a multi vitamin that contains certain vitamins and minerals PLUS "all twelve cell salts". So I went to my local health food store in search of this type of vitamin. Not to be found. Plenty of good multi-vitamins, just none containing cell salts. So I did an internet search for this kind of product, and found Young's products as the only ones containing cell salts, and then also a link for "business opportunities" and voila, there's the MLM stuff. It irritated me so much I just wanted to throw the book away.
But, I decided to take from the book what makes sense for me and ignore the stuff that sounds too extreme. It is basically a raw food diet, which apparently works well for people who have chronic health problems including rheumatoid arthritis and cancer. Another reviewer said to check out the Acid/Alkaline book from Christopher Vasey, so I'll probably look at that one. And I have family members who have read "Eat Right 4 Your Type" and had good results with that as well.
Basically most of us need to eat better. Once we do, the weight will naturally fall off. Ultimately what I liked best about this book is the method of transitioning yourself away from animal products and processed flours and sugars. And of course you must check with your doctor before incorporating any supplements into your diet, especially if you have any chronic health problems....more info - Too drastic
This book was not helpful to me in balancing my diet. It requires that you completely change your diet to eating grasses and stuff that you cannot find in my little town. I did not find it helpful at all....more info - SUPERB
I was amazed at how accurately Dr. Young described the symptoms I'd been suffering with for so long. I am 32 years old, and I have been suffering with severe back pain, depression, chronic fatigue, poor concentration, and obesity since I was 19 years old. I had tried so many diets and excercise programs, but none of them worked. I had an extreme amount of water retention and my stomach area swelled as if I was 3 months pregnant. I felt so empowered after reading this book! It gives a solution to all the health problems I had struggled with. After 4 days of the plan, I had lost 3 pounds. Within one week, my eyes looked brighter, my hair was thicker and shinier, I had lots of energy, and in general, I felt GOOD. Honestly, since then, I have noticed that even though Dr. Young's plan is very strict, even if you don't follow it exactly, and you do "cheat" now and then, if you just keep with it, you will lose weight and feel better. I am excited to continue the program for life. I have also recently purchased "The PH Diet for Weightloss" and it is also helpful....more info - Researched and documented
This is a well developed book. He has a clear idea why and how to resurrect a very ill body into a healthy one. It's concept is fabulous and resonates with my understanding. I found the regimen to be a bit too strenuous for me to undertake completely, but, if I were very ill, or may someday become diagnosed with a severe illness, I would head this book by the letter. I do try to be consciencous of my eating habits and try to follow his recommendations as close as practically possible.
I have sent a copy of this book to my daughter, a friend of a realtive who is close to diabetes, and a dear friend who is recovering from a brain tumor. I wish all those who seek it good health....more info - Buyer Beware
When I bought this book I thought it was going to give recommendations for a balanced diet that is good for your Ph levels. What I got was an all-out assault on meat, dairy, and fruit. Here is a very brief review of this book for anyone who doesn't have the time to fill their head full of garbage. Your diet should basically be nothing but vegatables, grasses, and a small amount of grains. If you eat meat, fruit, or dairy your body will become very acidic and little microorganisms will grow in your body and slowly eat you from the inside out. You shouldn't eat more than 25 grams of protein and you don't need to worry about calcium intake because only meat-eaters need extra calcium.
This diet is only for strict vegetarians and hypochondriacs who are afraid of being eaten alive by invisible fungi if they eat meat, fruit or dairy. This diet will make you loose weight because you're eating less than 1000 calories a day. It will make you lose muscle mass from lack of protein and you will get the cool side effect of having green poop from all of the chlorophil.
The purpose of this book is to scare you into buying the author's supplements while taking advatage of the Ph theory and capitalizing on people's fears. Don't be a sucker and fall for an idiotic diet that is one of the hardest diets to follow, very unbalanced, and could potentially be dangerous to your health....more info - Great info!!
I read this book and started doing some of the things suggested. I started out the first week dropping soda, then the next week coffee while at the sametime adding a green drink, veggies and less fruit. I felt better. So I started going off of meat this last week, I tried tofu for the first time and its not as bad as i thought it would be if bought flavored, I tried italian blend. Total in 3 weeks I have lost 7 pounds and 2 inches! I dont have very much weight ot loose so that probably all I will lose but the results are impressive. I dont need as much sleep as I used to. I used to fall asleep around 9 while watching tv now its midnight and I am just starting to dose off! I am so not a night owl! I am now! I am up to 2 green drinks a day, have alot more energy that I used to. I really feel that I can stick with this and keep a healthier way of life going. I havent done the cleanse yet but I am soon. The thing I am amazed about is that I am not craving junk food, coffee, tea or soda. I really thought the coffee would be a struggle but I am doing great! He does say that once you get used to the way of eating you will loose your cravings. I will say the only negative that I have had is an increased grocery bill from buying fresh veggies. I can live with that!...more info - LISTEN!!! for anyone who read the reviews about Dr. Young's lack of cred
This book is full of amazing health advice that, for the most part you already knew (you just didn't know exactly why it was healthy). Yes this diet, if followed word for word is difficult. WHO SAYS YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW ANYTHING WORD FOR WORD. Fundamentalist religious people don't even follow their book of choice word for word. Take what works for you and make it work for you. Super hydration, and green supplements are essential for our malnutritioned society. Eat more green vegetables. Eat higher water rich foods. Lower your intake of refined sugars (and fruit juice that averages 50 grams of sugar per serving!). Are these pieces of advice that need credential backing. Listen, If you asked ten ivy-league educated doctors their opinion on any given health issue, you would get ten different answer, maybe more depending on what drug company they are more closely linked to. BE LOGICAL. The majority of this book is irrefutable. The rest, as with any new theory you'll have to exercise faith. Which, by the way is what you're constantly doing with western medicine....more info - Superb
I have read a lot of health food books... but this one is far beyond. Dr Young is one rare person who dedicated himself for health and benefit of mankind. Others are dedicated to diseases.
Here is revealed astonishing and powerful relationship of pH balance.
Most important principle:
There is only one sickness and one disease and that is the over-acidification of the blood and tissues due to an inverted way of living eating and thinking.
All health literature are after one thing - purification. It's central to the health.
The pH principle is general for all humans and animals. But it's application for particular person is always individual....more info - Good Health Wealth is easy

Contains many well corroborated general guidelines regarding improved diet and nutrition. However, the author often takes these guidelines to the extreme. Discerning readers will carefully consider his recommendations before implementing them. Yes, cooking in microwave ovens probably should be avoided especially by health compromised people but they are very much in use in Russia today- they were reinstated ten years before the copyright date. And I doubt that microwave ovens render meat protein useless. Also, Dr. Young seems to have too many proprietary interests which of course raise questions about potential conflicts of interest and, therefore, the validity of his dietary claims.
I tried to confirm a few of his stated "facts" by trying them myself;I could not. Use common sense when you read about corn, peanuts, and mushrooms.

I have been following this program for 2 1/2 years. I was dealing with numerous health challenges, some quite serious. I started this, quit drinking coffee, soda, eating meat and have never looked back. My extreme acidreflux was gone in a matter of days. I lost 28 pound in just under 3 months, my rosacea I have suffered with for 5+ years is completely gone. I have strangers tell me how beautiful my skin looks and I no longer have flare ups, I get facials, peels and go in the sun! My liver and digestive system are working again! This program may sound complicated, but it is not. It is the simplicity of it that makes it work. And puts all the responsibility in your hands for your health. I have fired my Doctor!
Excellent book I would recommend everyone buy it and try it for 12 weeks and see your life change before your eyes!
...more info - The PH Miracle is Truly an Eye-Opener
I've been following the very basic principles of this book for about 7 months now. Over the course of this time, and not following it as closely as I should, thus far I have still shed over 30 pounds with very little effort. I had reached the point where I had tried diet after diet with unsatisfactory results. The PH balance theory, as described by Dr. Young, made a lot of sense to me. I figured at the very least to test the water at home (we have a well system and the PH is now balanced to just above 7) and the water at work (bottled--it tested at 6.0). I use baking powder (one alternative suggested) to raise the PH of the drinking water at work. This simple change has to be credited for a lot of the success I've had.
Another change I have made is to try to avoid any artificial sweeteners, particularly aspartame, suclarose, and nutrisweet. The calories in sugar (yes, an acidic no-no) are still better for you than man-made chemicals which are toxic to your cells, and frankly if you consider a teaspoon of sugar has about 18 calories, if memory serves, it's still a fairly negligible amount of calories versus the questionable alternatives to sugar.
The PH Miracle book, and the companion books by Dr. Young, is an easy to follow guideline. For me, it certainly has been a miraculous find. I plan to re-read it and incorporate more of the suggested changes into my diet. ...more info - Great Results! Doctors don't like him because you can be healthy without raking out the dough!
What a great program and an interesting book to read! Dr. Young has recently been attacked by many doctors who claim that his educational background is not as strong as theirs. Even if he didn't graduate from Harvard, what separates Dr. Young from the likes of many doctors is that his program actually works! While Doctors continue to prescribe high priced medication whose side effects are often worse than what they are treating, Dr. Young gives you a whole body health plan combined with the science of medicine that produces little unpleasant side effects and at a fraction of the cost. Doctors claims to know it all but medication is constantly being recalled and often medication is only released after 5 years of study. Rarely do doctors actually study the principals of nutrition. So, Dr. Young doesn't have a top degree, but who really cares when his program works! These doctors who criticize him and thumb their noses at natural cures, aren't the ones who are sick. People often turn to natural methods of curing themselves when the medication fails them. People wouldn't stick with it, if it didn't work and it certainly wouldn't have a huge fan base if it didn't. There are a whole bunch of quacks out their and med school students should be cautious as between the good doctors prescribing natural cures, there's many prescribing quackery. Dr. Young is not a quack. If you follow his program, you will likely be much healthier than popping a pill. I ask you, what's quackery:
1. Doctors prescribing a simple pill or combinations of pills to get better?
2. Or Dr. Young's method where you actually have to work, and make changes to your lifestyle and eating habits to be healthier?
Medicine prescribes an easy way of thinking of things (pop a pill) which fits with what consumers wants, however it often makes people sicker than if they would follow a more natural route meaning (change your diet, and lifestyle) but htat's not what someone who goes to Gabby's and buys a $3.99 bucket of fried chicken and two slabs of bacon wants to hear. No, they want to eat their bucket of fried chicken, go home and pop a pill and have all their problems dissapear? Whose the quack now?
Dr. Young's loyal fans are behind him and they are behind them because they themselves have experienced results that last as opposed to being told (by faulty test studies done by pharmeceutical companies) that they will get better when they in fact do not.
Follow Dr. Young's method and find yourself feeling, energetic and healthier.
If you are sick, you should follow his method to getting healthier and by doing that, you have the opportunity to get healthier and be free of some of the health conditions that are effecting your life. ...more info - excellent information
there's information here that may seem odd, but it does check out with common sense. I think there are major benefits to trying out the ideas, although can't get myself to go whole hog on all of them...more info - Is Acid Really the Culprit?
I have read this book and I do not agree with it. Certainly eating vegetables is a good way to go and will help you lose weight- no doubt about it!
However, the author cites acid as the cause of all of our ills and diseases. Let us take a good look at that. Ascorbic Acid, you know Vitamin C, which is said to be the closest thing to cure the common cold. Guess what that is an acid.
Linaus Pauling, a real doctor, not one that got his degree online at some school that he can not reveal, used to take up to 15,000 mgs a day of ascorbic acid (over 200 times what Centrum has). Did it kill him, no he lived into his nineties, over twenty years longer than the average man. So much for acid being bad.
And the stomach what is that composed of? HCL, Hydrochloric acid, and if it did not, you would not be able to digest your food. Also that acid, destroys bad bacteria, parasites and yeast.
In addition to this there are other acids which we need to survive on, such as Amino Acids, which are in every protein you eat. Also I am sure you heard of Essential Fatty Acids, Omega 3's. Scientists will tell you they are some of the best things to eat, and are essential to the body. Still think acids are bad?
The bottom line is the authors credentials are dubious at best, and he should have stuck to what is true in his book. That is that vegetables are the best thing for you and will help you lose weight and get healthier!...more info - Excellent Health Solution

Well, I purchased this book, and I have tried to stick to the philosophy as much as I can, and the results have been wonderful. Now I can eat more, enjoy the foods I like, like vegetables, and not feel sick. By the way, I am also petite, but to my surprise eating this way made me lose some fat around my waiste and I feel full of energy. I decided to try this book after Anthony Robbins recommended it on his "Get the Edge" program. He raved about the diet saying that he felt amazing while only getting 6-hours of sleep. He said he would work long hours and come home feeling refreshed.
He really sold me on it.
I needed energy like that to get my business started so I decided to give it a try.
The initial cleanse was very difficult for two reasons. The first problem was that it made me feel really sick. The second problem was that the cleanse wasn't very effective. The book says you're supposed to have bowel movements 3-6 times a day. However, by the 3rd day I was lucky to have any at all.
I do commend Mr. Young for having such a thorough book but in the end some of the stuff just isn't practical. I found a nice natural laxative, like he recommended, for the cleanse but it made me feel even weaker than before. I couldn't do this cleanse and take the natural laxative, it was just too taxing on my system.
I went on the diet for about 3-months without feeling any better. Probably because my cleanse was poorly done.
I knew I had to do the cleanse again so this time I searched on the Internet for a pre-packaged cleanse program.
I ended up finding a system called "Ultimate Fasting Cleanse" which worked very well. I had better elimination and I didn't feel sick at all. After I was done my hunger was gone so I guess it worked to clear out my "Candida".
After that I started back on the diet and I'm doing considerably better. However, I didn't experience any of those amazing effects that Robbins was raving about on his CD.
The diet is definitely worth doing. The benefits go beyond just losing weight. I don't feel hunger pains like I did in the past, I have a better sense of well being and my allergy problem is better (not perfect but better).
Despite all of the progress I have made the diet was still very disappointing because of my high expectations. That's not Robert Young's fault because he doesn't really hype up the diet.
However, the "Alkaline Diet community" as a whole makes this diet out to be some kind of "miracle". Maybe it is if you are sick but I was relatively healthy and I wanted to feel amazing.
I didn't get that from this diet.
If you are going to do a vegan, raw foods or alkaline diet this is probably the best diet for you. It's probably also good for people who are desperate to lose weight. However, I think the diet is too restrictive and the cleanse is too harsh for casual dieters looking to lose a few pounds.
It's also not a miracle for regular people....more info - Editorial Comment Review
It seems that every Editorial Review of Alternative Medicine always end with the statement 'it's wise to check with your doctor before starting off in search of miracles'. Isnt it a fact that most people have lost faith with their doctors who really dont know anything much about the human body and are only the 'gatekeepers' for referrals to their colleague consultants in hospitals. Ask a doctor what is the cause of each disease and he will answer you with a blank expression and a prescription for a pharmaceutical drug with a long list of side effects. Press him further about the drug interactions with the organs of the body and he will come out with a view that overall its well tolerated by the organs endorsed by the pharmaceutical companies. Doctors in the UK have about 5 minutes consultation for very patient. Thats enough to take your mandatory Blood pressure and to scribble some prescription. The problem is that most patients treat doctors as the source of all medical knowledge which they are not. The respect them too much. They are just body mechanics in my view and there can be various competency levels as well incompetency levels of such mechanics. So, if you want to get medically fit then you have to start treating yourself with a healthy diet and exercise. What Dr.Young says is not gospel truth but goes a long way in my view to encourage you on the road to a healthy lifestyle. Ask my local doctor and all he will do is prescribe dangerous drugs....more info - Disappointed
I read this book with great interest, as I thought the acid/alkaline balance in the body was the answer. But when I tried the supplements, especially the hydrogen peroxide I had problems. When I FINALLY found foodgrade hydrogen peroxide, it said it was for external use only. I still used it as instructed, but I had such severe symptoms that I felt I should discontinue the treatment. I was not sure that it was safe.
It should not be so hard to find the supplements required for this theory to work. And I wonder why we can't heal ourselves by a healthy diet alone rather than taking a rash of supplements that aren't easy to find?
I couldn't even find the supplements the author supposedly sells via his website, so I gave up. I am trying The Omega Diet instead. ...more info - If only everyone read this book...
....America would be a better place to live. Somewhere in history the propaganda machine kicked out important nutrition information that was largely based on private interests. And now, here we are; sick, tired, diseased and frustrated with life.
This book makes sense. Before reading, however, question your beliefs...and not just the ones you WANT to question...question all of them. Then, you'll find it easy to accept Dr Young's suggestions. The most obvious one to question was that about breakfast....I don't know why breakfast is some over-sugar'ed bowl of cereal or pop-tart in America.
Start with the cleanse. It'll reset your sugar cravings and help you understand the mental component of food, eating and hunger. You'll find during a cleanse that you have more energy than ever, feel light and free, and yet still, somewhere in the back of your mind, some part of you BEGS for food. It's like a little monster that exists within your mind...but don't worry, after very little time, it is starved to non-existence, along with you belief that eating food is in important part of your every day social life.

I bought this book because of concerns on our pH levels. My hope was that it would give me some good, solid information on how to balance our pH levels while eating in a manner that we have learned is healthy and right for us. This book only offered a basically Vegan diet using almost only vegetables. I did find that there was an extensive list of references but the body of the book was seriously missing backing and study information. I did not find that studies were discussed nor were they noted so that I could research them. This is always a concern of mine as how the study was done, who did it and so on is vital to undertanding the information. As I know for a fact that this type of diet can not be tolerated by my body (I became quite ill when I used it several years ago and it was NOT part of the cleansing process!), I was very disappointed that there was nothing on the web site that told me I was paying for a diet I was already familiar with. I feel that there was no hint as to a Vegan diet and that there was no way for me to sort it out, even with reading parts of the books on line. I do know one woman who has used this diet for years and had her daughter put on it when she was so ill. The daughter has not stayed on the diet and remains in excellent health, so i do not know if a long term use would benefit some or not. However, I truly feel that the book was a waste of my money....more info - a must read
This book changed my life! I have already sent copies to friends and family. The binding is breaking on mine already, I use it everyday. This book has vital information about the way our bodies work and what it does with the foods we eat. It tells us the why in why foods are "good" or "bad" for us. Everybody should know about pH balance. I lost weight with this book, and found news ways to cook. This book will keep you healthy so that there is no place for disease to take hold. It challenges conventional medicine that treats you after you have already gotten sick, where this book teaches you how to take care of yourself so that you never get sick in the first place. This book has a wealth of knowledge stated in simple terms. A must read!
One word of caution, It endorses allot of different peoples products, no doubt to make money. It uses Braggs liquid aminos in just about all the recipies and I would never tell anyone to use that stuff, its poison! It comes out of your pores when on a fast or cleanse, so I just skip that and use the knowledge it does provide and cook with fresh fruit and veg. ...more info - Pseudoscience And Quackery
It is amusing to read all the pro-Young apologists' retorts to criticism of this awful book. Instead of addressing the substantive points that critics such as Glenn E. Rodey raise, we read *ad hominem* attacks--the calling card of the overly emotional and the ideologue--and attempts to avoid the subject by referring to such red herrings as the parochial AMA, medical doctors' general lack of sound nutritional knowledge, and the like.
For that reason, let us recap the facts, so that they stand out unmistakeably.
FACT: With respect to his "credentials", which he is very reluctant to disclose, Young has far less credibility than any licensed medical practitioner.
Young received all of his post-graduate degrees from an unaccredited correspondence school. That is not how a reputable scientist and researcher educates himself. Playing at home with one's chemistry set, and then offering one's results as conclusively proven, without independent verification, is not sound science, either.
FACT: Young claims to be a world-renowned expert in various scientific fields, when he has never published an article in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
FACT: Young has a documented history of involvement in multi-level marketing (MLM) schemes.
FACT: Young's book is filled primarily with anecdotes from individuals who praise the miraculous effects of his diet. The "unsolicited testimonials from unknown parties as a substitute for evidence" ploy is a very old and, to the intelligent reader, unconvincing one.
FACT: Young's documentation in this book is extremely sloppy. He does not tie his references to footnotes that support his specific claims. As another reviewer mentions, Young also cites to extremely outdated and utterly discredited research in support of his acid/alkaline thesis.
FACT: In 1996, under a plea bargain, Young pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of attempted practice of medicine without a license. The plea bargain agreement provided that the charge would be dismissed if Young stayed out of trouble for eighteen months. [Source: "Herbalist in Alpine Pleads Guilty to Reduced Charge". *Deseret News* (Salt Lake City), February 5, 1996].
That said, there *may* be some merit in the dietary principles that Young advocates. From my personal experience, I tend to doubt it (There is no credible evidence of which I am aware that the body does not by itself do an excellent job of neutralizing any nutrients before they enter the bloodstream). My point here is that this is not the book that succesfully demonstrates these potential, but unlikely, merits. Therefore, use this book as a basis for experimenting upon yourself, if you like, but beware of the risks, and beware especially of this book's, and this author's, superabundant flaws.
Note: Please, before you accuse me of being yet another shill for the AMA, know that I actively practice dietary supplementation, that I have been treated by practitioners of complementary medicine, and that I have an interest in, and a great respect for, *genuinely* scientific alternative approaches to health, nutrition, and medicine....more info - Changed my life!
I have been dealing with some health issues for over a year. After reading this book and implemeting the Program, the results have been nothing short of miraculous. I have never been happier, healthier, clearer, or filled with more energy in my entire life. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to understand their health and how it relates to every other area of your life!...more info - Let the pH Miracle set you free
I am familiar with all of the books written by Dr. Robert O. Young. Like Dr. Young, I am a microscopist who understands the intimate connection between alkalinity of the body and all cellular health including tissues, organs and blood.
I thought that The pH Miracle was a bold and brilliant book that over time will help refocus the world of western medical science from the outer world over which we have little control to our own inner phenomenon or inner environment over which we have a great deal of control.
But then, as I was reading the Amazon reviews online, I found this insane review by someone named "Carnamagos" which looked very much like someone with a vendetta. I find it amazing that Mr. Chili Con Carne or anyone would be so na?ve and uninformed as to attack Dr. Young in such a manner. But it is even more incongruous to me that some stranger who has undoubtedly never met Dr. Young would criticize him for a shortcoming of scientific integrity or some fantasized lack of personal character. This Carnamagos person obviously does not know anything of the brilliant career of Dr. Robert O. Young.
So I did a little research. It turns out that Mr. Chili Con Carne is somebody who doesn't want to be identified. No wonder. Based on the level of aggression and intended harm in the review, I assume that Carnamagos is a "he" and this hit-man has shamed himself by attacking a person whom he could not possibly know.
As it turns out, the pen name of "Carnamagos" has something to do with evil. Mr. Chili Con Carnamagos is apparently a person who identifies with the dark side of life. This is a person who attacks people from the shadows.
I also note that the bold review posted by the psychologist from Missouri also "took to task" and answered some of the senseless comments by Chili Con Carnamagos. I found myself in agreement with his review entitled "Trailblazing Science" and I thought it was right on the button.
I have met Dr. Young many times in professional settings. I have been present when anonymous people have appeared from nowhere and shook is hand and thanked him for saving their life or the life of a loved one. Dr. Young is known by virtually all who have spent time with him as a wonderful, generous, kind, self-sacrificing doctor, clinician, scientist, church member, husband and father.
Since this anonymous, fictitious person who calls himself "Carnamagos" has found time to dig up and misconstrue various mean-minded, incorrect, out-of-context or simply alleged "FACTS" about Dr. Young, I will add a few other irrefutable, REAL facts that are far more interesting, I believe, to a nation of people concerned with the health and well-being of its citizens.
FACT: Neil Solomon, M.D, Ph.D., Director, International Council for Caring Communities' Health, Advisory Board, Non-Governmental Organizations, United Nations and former Head of Research at Johns Hopkin School of Medicine, said this about Dr. Young and his work:
"Dr. Young may be on the threshold of a new biology whose principals could revolutionize biology and medicine and potentially help people worldwide."
After studying Dr. Young's work, Dr. Solomon invited him to serve on the council.
FACT: Janet Konefal, Ph.D., M.P.H., L.Ac., Chief, Division of Complementary and Integrative Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Miami School of Medicine, had this to say about Dr. Young and his science:
"Dr. Young is a leader in groundbreaking research in nutrition and health."
FACT: Tony Robbins, a giant within the personal and professional improvement industry, a business leader of unparalleled success in his field, Author of "Unlimited Power" and "Awaken the Giant Within" has this to say of Dr. Robert Young:
"In the 22 years I have spent in the personal and professional improvement industry, I have never endorsed a particular person or product, but I must say that Dr. Young is a genius in this area...Over the last two years there is not a single man, woman, or child I have sent to Dr. Young who does not feel he has profoundly impacted the quality of their health...In the case of the young boy, (sent to me by Make A Wish Foundation) his bones were so brittle that he would break a rib if he were to cough, but after six months he was lifting weights, exercising, and his prognosis is no longer death."
FACT: Frederick Burton, M.D., the Burton Wellness and Injury Center, had this to say about Dr. Young and his work on diabetes,
"A miracle for people who suffer from this horrible disease . . . This by far is the most important book ever written on the subject of diabetes mellitus."
FACT: Chi C. Mao, M.D., Ph.D., Current Chief Medical Officer, Select Specialty Hospitals - Houston, Houston, Texas, had this to say,
"It is my belief that Dr. Young's theory, his therapeutic methodology, and his commitment to health care will continue to make history in years to come."
FACT: Dr. Young has helped to improve the quality and quantity of life for hundreds of thousands of people worldwide in over 72 countries.
FACT: Anthony Espinet, M.Dl., F.R.C.A.,C.C.S.T., Consultant Anesthesiologist and Intensivist, Clinical Lecturer, University of Newcastle, England wrote of one of Dr. Young's books:
"The principles so simply stated have been gathered from a vast arena of knowledge and experience, addressing the problem of personal health and disease. The book provides a profound depth of scientific information, being conveyed in an easily readable style that is written for the general public as well as the health professional."
FACT: Professor Lawrence Edward (Dean) Carter Sr., Ph.D., D.D., D.H., D.R.S., D.H.C of Morehouse College, prot¨¦g¨¦ and successor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, and instructor at the Morehouse School of Medicine, had this to say about the Dr. Robert and Shelley Young:
"Dr. Robert O. Young and His wife, Shelley Redford Young, have established themselves as the preeminent scientific researchers on balancing body chemistry and achieving the ideal, healthy weight. Every African-American and African-Caribbean or any person suffering from Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, obesity, overweight, underweight, hypertension, cancer, AIDS, or heart disease, or any person who may have been reared on "soul food," must discover The pH Miracle, The pH Miracle for Diabetes and their latest book The pH Miracle for Weight Loss and the rejuvenating recipes in order to alkalize and energize an over-acidified diet.
FACT: Dr. Young has never been convicted of practicing medicine without a license or attempted practice of medicine without a license.
Fact: Dr. Young has been a member in good standing of the American Society of Microbiologists for over ten years.
Fact: Dr. Young is an honary member of the Connecticut Holistic Health Association.
Fact: Dr. Young is a lifetime member of the Presidents Council at Brigham Young University.
Fact: Dr. Young is a member of the advisor board to Dean Lawrence Carter at the Martin Luther King Chapel, Morehouse College. He and his wife, Shelley Redford Young, were inducted into the collegium of scholars at Morehouse College by Professor Carter.
And to our Mr. Caramagos, I include this quote...............
"All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."
Arthur Schopenhauer
Don't be afraid to have an open mind and take a different path to health. If you evaluate the health of the majority of Americans that rely on the current path I think you'll agree that there is room for change and improvement. Following the pH Miracle program will give you vibrant health, sustainable energy, and a new outlook on life. I know this because my family and I have been living it for seven years....more info - TrailBlazing Science
There may be no area of health more controversial, more confusing, with more divergent prescriptions, or more fraught with failure than that of weight loss. There is probably no important physical challenge or affliction that affects more Americans--children and adults alike--than being overweight.
Thus, it is amazing to me that some obviously literate contributors have somehow misunderstood the basic and foundational principles of Dr. Robert O. Young's trailblazing science set forth in The pH Miracle. And if they don't understand the concepts set forth there, they won't understand The pH Miracle for Weight Loss any better.
What is so fascinating about the groundbreaking health and nutritional information set forth by Dr. Young is that one could take the "pH Weight Loss" volume and insert any other disorder--arthritis, heart disease, cancer, diabetes--you name it--in place of "weight loss." The pH Miracle for Weight Loss is so fundamental and so radical that it literally sets forth what Dr. Young refers to as "New Biology" and a new foundation for understanding the health and well-being of the entire human race.
Thus, reading some of the lame-brain criticisms found here and there under Dr. Robert and Shelley Young's books is very disturbing. You can tell from the confused and biased comments of these pseudo-medical savants that they do not even recognize the powerful seminal discovery represented by that which they so carelessly denigrate.
Based on the a few obtuse, mean-minded and devious comments seen on the Internet, it is obvious that some of Dr. Young's critics have not done their homework, are completely disingenuous, are perhaps threatened in some way--or may very well "have another dog in the fight."
It is equally amazing that any critic who takes themselves seriously would deny even the possibility that fat cells are one of nature's many attempted protective mechanisms for coping with acid foods and lifestyle--just as are most tumors, polyps, inflammations, acne, boils, swelling and so on. Despite their hyperbole, certain critics are obviously unaware that overweight people willing to follow the alkaline regime universally lose weight. And they usually lose a great deal of weight.
In addition to weight loss, it is both fascinating and instructive to see how the body returns to an earlier healthier and more harmonic state when one actually feeds it properly and gives it what nature intended. Dr. Young's theory makes incredible sense: Fat cells are one of the body's attempts to isolate excessive and destructive acids from the blood, tissues, organs and other important cells of the body. Dr. Young's microscopy work with 10,000 blood samples coupled with nutritional regimens and follow-up blood analyses verify these phenomena in case after case.
Understanding blood is one of the many areas in which Dr. Young excels. When your doctor orders a blood test on you, for instance, the lab tests are not done by identifying the etiology, cause, or relevance of a myriad of unhealthy blood cells. Labs don't pay much attention to the number and nature of unhealthy cells--the cells that tell you the most serious information about the overall health of the body. They miss the big picture. Labs simply count cells and report numerical values for sugar levels, liver and heart enzymes, kidney by-products and factors for blood coagulation. They are looking for numbers. It's a quantity concept, not a quality analysis. The lab does generally look at the type and shape of red blood cells and sometimes comments on them in their reports. But they are not understanding the real meaning of what they are viewing, and the information that is sent back to the doctors does not give them much information to help treat you. Rarely, if ever, does your doctor see your blood under the microscope, nor would he or she be trained to understand the most important component in your body--your blood.
And yet, looking at healthy blood under a microscope is nothing less than a thing of beauty--a dazzling ballet of beauty and symmetry dancing and swirling under the light of the microscope. Nonetheless, few doctors have ever seen such a picture. In fact, looking at their lab partner's blood cells in hematology 101--given the eating habits of most med students--must have been nothing short of a nightmare--despite the fact that the slides all looked sickeningly similar. The novice med prodigy had no way to recognize the acidic blood bombardment for what it was. It takes only a few minutes for one's cheeseburger and greasy onion rings to create the incipient pathology of the body--starkly highlighted in the blood--whether or not it was recognized as the early beginning of the early end.
Dr. Young's research focuses on the nature of the pathological cells. He can tell in the blood where the acids of the body have begun to accumulate and where the body is breaking down--long before you have symptoms. Dr. Young exposes the key vulnerability in human pathology--the acid level in the small intestine. It is in this area of the body that Dr. Young's theories are perhaps the least understood. It is in this area of the body that his dietary regimen has the most immediate impact, and why people feel so better so quickly when Dr. Young begins educating them about how the body REALLY works--and what to eat and not to eat to achieve certain results.
Most diets tell you WHAT to eat. And some are on the right track--although many, like Atkins acid diet, are extremely acidic and unhealthy. But even those dieticians on the right track do not understand the inner working of the blood and intestines and do not know the real reason they are correct. Vegetables aren't healthy because they are vegetables--or even just because they have vitamins, minerals, etc. Vegetables are especially healthy because of their high alkaline content. Consequently, many diets prescribe correct foods but the reasoning and underlying rationale is off target. This is one of the reasons that people lose weight and constantly regain it--because they did not understand the underlying principles--the common denominators of all health, disease, and most dis-ease. Once the bulls-eye is identified, you will keep your weight off as long as you wish. You can eat all you feel like eating, but you have to know what to eat and why--and how to prepare certain vegetable foods so they are scrumptious.
Some critics appear to misunderstand and criticize the intelligent, career-long, case-study type of research of Dr. Robert and Shelley Young. True, the pharmaceutical industry has not seen fit to study their health and nutritional program. And no wonder! The inexpensive alkaline diet will one day cut deeply into Big Pharma's lucrative and poisonous prescriptive "medicines" supposedly aimed at society's health problems. Pharmaceutical executives have known that for several decades. This is part of the reason that large pharmaceutical companies are attempting to buy out herbal and nutritional companies, suppress positive nutritional research, highlight negative herbal research, and exhort the FDA into new administrative laws that attempt to tie the hands of many professional alternative medicine practitioners--and put them out of business.
Yet, overwhelming evidence exists that (probably all) prescription medications are acidic, including all those dietary pills. Despite some apparent short-terms gains, prescriptive acids, masquerading as medicine, are poisonous chemical compounds and sooner or later, in one way or another, add to the body's problems.
When you are tempted to think that all those non-stop drug ads you see on TV are actually helping you, keep in mind the following: It is possible to win a battle once in awhile and still lose the war. It is possible to lose weight, for instance, with some prescription drugs and unhealthy diets, but still be incurring various side-effects and multiple areas of damage to other parts of the body. It is possible to suppress certain symptoms even though the acidic drug(s) used are sewing the seeds for later health problems. Meanwhile, the real cause of illness and disease is not addressed.
Yet, despite the fact that Big Pharma is unwilling--and will forever be unwilling--to fund a medical school research laboratory to properly test Dr. Young's decades of work, pharmaceutical and allopathic proponents nonetheless blame Dr. Young for his inability to have amassed the resources to orchestrate randomized, large scale, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies. Big Pharma may be greedy, but they are not stupid. What Dr. Young and others are learning about how the body is designed and how it functions will sometime in the near future rob pharmaceutical companies from the fruits of their main obsession--profits.
Despite those few loud detractors, Dr. Robert Young's N-of-1 research is very useful and is well respected in many scientific circles. It is especially useful in the behavioral sciences wherein professional helping agents assist individuals in tracking their own self-administered and self-controlled behavior modification studies. N-of-1, studies can be used whenever the independent variable (treatment) is easily managed and the dependent variable (outcome) is readily observed. This is certainly the case in most weight-loss situations.
What could be more empirical or scientific than tracking and recording your own food for several months and matching it up with the pH level of your urine and saliva 5 or 10 times a day? With this method, one can see the evidence whenever and wherever one wants. Just eat "right" for a few days and then eat "wrong" for a few days while tracking body weight and the pH of body fluids. Do that off and on. Such studies are referred to as "A-B-A-B" trials and consist of carefully repeated measures of baseline-treatment-baseline-treatment observations. Any adult can easily keep track of his/her pH results with pH strips. The bathroom scales will tell you the rest. Thus, in the privacy of your home, you can do your own N-of-1 or single-participant research. You will see how very quickly your body is telling you what is going on inside of you. If you think a tummy ache or morning hangover is the body's main feedback that you have overdone something or are eating wrong, wait until you see what your blood, saliva and urine are telling you.
And as a result of some of those few tasteless, personal attacks on The pH Miracle for Weight Loss and some of Dr. Young's other best-selling books, I have several other beefs to pick with those few misguided Young critics and their near-sighted and out-of-context examples, and I will address them one by one.
First, Dr. Young is not the only scientist under attack by powerful interests. I suspect that some of the personal character attacks I see on the Internet are pharmaceutical industry "insiders." These may consist of employees, paid consultants, or some other aligned confederates generally deployed to create world-wide disinformation in the public mind and protect Big Pharma profits and shore up their flagging reputation. Consider this: If all those toxic drugs were so desperately needed and valuable to the public, why, according to TNS research and the Wall Street Journal, would the pharmaceutical industry spend $100 billion on advertising in 2005, far more than was spent on their own research and development? And guess who pays for all that advertising!
Secondly, despite 5 degrees in science and 3 doctorates, Dr. Young is criticized for his training and extraordinarily brilliant education. Dr. Young decidedly avoided typical M.D.-type medical training. Early in his career he believed that the germ theory was wrong and was not willing to undergo continuous medical indoctrination of information based on faulty theoretical underpinnings. Dr. Young received his education from complementary and alternative graduate science programs. These programs routinely question and disagree with the shoddy science coming from many medical schools which are largely controlled by the FDA and its pharmaceutical "partners," the same cronies who trade management and executive jobs back and forth like youngsters trade baseball cards.
It is common knowledge that it is impossible to receive accreditation from many sanctioning bodies when turf, money, greed and power speak so loudly. Some of the greatest medical scientific work in history has barely seen the light of day. (see Dr. Royal Rife, Dr. Antoine Bechamp, etc.) Those who attack Dr. Young's training are heavily invested in a competitive, self-seeking, self-serving and monopolistic approach to the health and wellness industry. This approach is designed to disparage successful alternative treatment programs and efforts. If you are not familiar with this issue, ask yourself when the last time was that you heard of a person dying from a nutritional supplement or an alternative medical treatment program? The answer is "rarely" or "never." Then ask yourself how many people have died from "FDA tested and approved" medicine? The answer is 125,000 people died in one recent year according to The Journal of the American Medical Association.
Third, is it true that Dr. Young, despite having published eight books and two decades of research including journal articles, has never published articles in major peer-reviewed scientific journals controlled by the AMA? Yes, it is absolutely true. Why? Because without the over-hyped M.D. degree, with the pharmaceutical throttle-neck grip on the entire medical industry, and with the financially dependent hospital researchers and educators competing for Big Pharma drug-research funds, who is going to publish an article by Dr. Young that challenges the very basis of all western allopathic pharmaceutical medicine? Dr. Young has been among the small but brilliant cadre of scholars over the last century who have been relegated to the shadows of the medical spotlight for totally disagreeing with Louis Pasteur's germ theory set forth nearly two centuries ago. It is quite obvious that "no one" will touch Dr. Young's anti-pharmaceutical research with a ten foot pole. Such boldness could easily result in professional ostracism and financial suicide.
Yet, Dr. Young has quiet, private, conversations with many prominent allopathic medical leaders across the country who support and encourage his work and praise his findings--but cannot or will not stand up in the face of a trillion dollar industry--and the loss of their own personal and professional standing.
Fourth, Dr. Young, too busy with research and education, did turn over some of his marketing efforts to a MLM company many years ago. Later, disappointed by the lack of professionalism, public education, research, and excessive focus on sales and marketing, Dr. Young admitted his mistake and took all possible legal and ethical steps to disassociate himself from his mistaken business decisions.
Fifth, Dr. Young, in lieu of standard large-scale research which the powerful medical monopoly will not undertake, has published hundreds of case studies and reports of miraculous and often instant success once his nutritional regimen is understood and followed. Not only are most of his individual successes NOT anonymous, but many are quite well-known professionals with worldwide reputations who have publicly attested to the power and efficacy of Dr. Young's science and have praised the nutritionally excellent dietary recipes published by his wife and co-author.
Lastly, like a thousand other professional complementary and alternative practitioners, and because Dr. Young is a threat to the largest industry in America--the medical-pharmaceutical complex--Dr. Young has found himself the target of pursuit and legal entrapment by authorities who themselves are pressured to enforce and hop-scotch through a maze of restrictive and onerous laws which have been enacted over the past 50 years as a result of political pressure and the lobby of powerful economic interests. Despite his three doctoral degrees, charges have twice been brought against Dr. Young for practicing medicine. Dr. Young has prevailed in both instances. No court record exists, and the only mention of these false charges are a few incomplete and out-of-context newspaper accounts. Like Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and all fight courageously for the rights of their fellow men, I believe that Dr. Young is proud to stand up to the morally bankrupt charges of those in power who seek to bring him down.
Young's work represents the personification of disruptive technology, and he is a threat to the status quo and the egos of the powerful. Most trailblazers in the history of the world have had to withstand the slings and arrows of those whose economic interests, personal office, or perception of the world has been threatened.
For me personally, after age 60, with an attack of what could have been anything from stomach cancer to severe gastritis, within a week, while only beginning to implement the Young regimen, I rid myself of severe stomach pain that had been keeping me from sleeping. Actually, my stomach was so swollen and sensitive that I couldn't even get comfortable in bed. Additionally, in two or three weeks I no longer had to take the glucosamine and chondroitin arthritis medicine I had taken for 8 years. I began losing weight immediately and as of today I'm down about 50 pounds. It also seems that my memory has been improving and I will have to monitor that possible side benefit more carefully. Obviously, however, a rising tide lifts all boats, and theoretically every cell in my body has probably improved. My sleep requirements dropped from 8 or 9 hours to 7 hours or less. I no longer need naps. I'm able to run again and play full-court basketball.
How could this happen so suddenly? Why is the brilliant Young family weight loss program and other health regimens not yet well known? Allow me a few additional thoughts:
The truth is that some of the problem lies with everyday people like you and me. Not many people in America are willing to do the serious investigation--to take the time that is needed--to read widely and critically and search out that which is required--to take more seriously their responsibility to themselves and their families.
It is still a minority of Americans who are willing to admit that we have been bamboozled by the food industry, by the allopathic medical/pharmaceutical industry, and by the Congress of the United States that, sadly, every day, takes egregious sums of money from all three.
CBS's 60 Minutes recently showed the fraud and deceit perpetrated on the American public by the pharmaceutical industry and shameless elected representatives.
The reason that I began experiencing a relief of symptoms so quickly is because Dr. Robert O. Young, great, great grand-son of Brigham Young, is onto something powerful that challenges and exposes traditional medicine. Dr. Robert and Shelley Young have already begun to change the food industry forever. Their work will send us back to the drawing board and the family vegetable garden.
The reason my life changed forever is because I now know what to eat, the balance between various fruits and vegetables, and which supplements may be needed and when and why. I now know if a carrot is more alkaline than stalk of celery. I know if a piece of organic whole wheat bread is more acidic than a piece of organic rye. I now know which foods I should avoid entirely--no matter what.
Dr. Young has provided proof of what he says, and he gives you the simple tools to prove it to yourself. The proof comes as often as you want it. Drink a coca-cola with your fries and burger and watch what happens to your pH. When your urine pH drops to 6 or 5 or lower, how in the world can your blood maintain 7.365?
When your body is overwhelmed by an acidic diet wherein various pH measurements do not begin to approach a pH of 5 or 6, what does your body do with all that acid? The answer is simple. The body turns itself inside out and upside down trying to cope with a diet of food that the human body was never designed to handle. Wherever your body finds a weak link--probably hereditary--and tries to hide or bury that acid, that's where you eventually get sick.
Obesity is a good example. If the average American is ONLY 20 pounds overweight, that comes out to 6 BILLION pounds of fat in America. What is fat? Fat is acid. Fat cells are one of the body's desperate mechanisms to handle acid so that organ systems do not become overwhelmed by all the acid food and drink that we consume.
If you read the Scriptures of all the major religions of the world--Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, Christianity--they all talk about eating correctly and the importance of living from the fruit of the earth. All Sacred Scripture from major world religions speak the same language about love, peace, truth, right conduct and non-violence.
Scripture does not talk about stuffing helpless, crowded animals with cheap food and hormones and then coloring and radiating the meat so it can sit in the meat case for several extra days. They do not recommend drinking milk from cows after the animal and the product have been devastated by 75 different toxins in the dairy chain.
If you REALLY want to understand the BEAUTY of Dr. Young, the scientist, then you have to dive into his work. You will not find many pearls in the shallows. So dive deep into 30 years of science and read his seminal works such as Sick & Tired, Reclaim Your Inner Terrain. By microscopically studying the blood of over 10,000 people, Dr. Young has documented instant feedback from pictures of healthy and unhealthy blood cells. It is this information that allows him to apply "New Biology" and begin to educate the world and to point the way to a revised understanding of the health and dietary requirements of our bodies.
Unfortunately, it is true that Dr. Young and his brave and talented wife, Shelley, have taken flak from a number of clever pundits and buffoons. Having failed to have performed conscientious homework, these narrowly educated exhibitionists have very little grasp of that which they write. Yet, the fight will be long and hard, because for every brilliant, visionary like Dr. Young searching for truth, they will always find themselves 'fighting at the crossroads against the 10,000 men who guard the past.'

With the changes today in how we view our health, this book is great. The need to understand how we can control our own health is without so many drugs and is within these pages. ...more info - Useful but flawed.
I have felt some of the benefits of adopting the Young diet - but I do not believe that these results can be ascribed to the causes postulated by his theory. The theory that alkaline means energy (and that acid means energy deficit) is simplistic and is unsupported by credible evidence. I do not believe in the efficacy of Robert Young's patent medicines. I have found that sodium bicarbonate has equally beneficial 'alkalising' effects - at a fraction of the cost. Fundamentally, Robert Young is advocating nothing more than a routine healthy diet. But he tries to disguise this fact with pseudo-scientific jargon, unsupported assertions, a paucity of real evidence and an array of unnecessarily expensive commercial products of doubtful efficacy. Nevertheless, the type of diet which he recommends may well produce some beneficial effects....more info - Everything you eat is bad except vegetables!
As far as the content of information in this book it is very informative but the diet itself is not realistic. Everything is bad to eat except, vegetables and those for the most part should be eaten raw. Tufo and a little fish are the only other things besides beans and legumes you can eat and they have to be very fresh or their bad. Even most fruits are bad for you. Even condiments like mustard, ketchep, steak sauce, soysauce, salad dressings, pickels, that's all bad!
After reading this book, I actually was a little depressed. I want to improve my health but not like this. I can't go around chewing raw veggies and maybe getting some fish a couple of times a month. Part of the human experience is enjoying foods and different kinds of them. I think this is more for people that need a drastic life change from a health ailment that they have. The one thing I do believe about this book is that the main course of your meal should be vegetables, then small amounts of meat and starch. Also, I will try to stay away from microwaving foods as much as possible. I think Jorge Cruise has a more sensable diet plan and if your looking to change your diet to a more healthy one you might want to look at some of his books....more info - A great book!
I will not write too much about this book. But it is great.
(If you want to see my full review of the Ph Miracle, look for my book review on the Ph Miracle diet for Weight Loss. I present it all there.)
This is a fantastic book and program.
When you see Rob present his findings in person, at one of his retreat conferences, he is quiet fascinating.
The program works and it changed my life!
Rob and Shelley are wonderful people that are good friends of mine.
And this is a great book.
Five stars!!!
Thank you so much Rob and Shelley!!...more info - The PH Miracle
The book is very interesting and full of lots of great anecdotal stories. I don't agree with everything they preach in it but they do have some ideas that make sense....more info - Impove your health
I trained under Dr. Young as a microscopist. Part of Dr. Youngs knowledge that is a part of The pH Miracle was his ability to watch as the red and white blood cells improved in quality and function as individuals began to eat healthy foods. As the blood improved in quality and function, health always improves. In "The pH Miracle: Balance Your Health" Dr. Young gives us knowledge that allows us to improve our health if we are strong enough to break away from our bad habits and move to better choices in our diet and lifestyle. My health definitely improved as I followed suggestion from the book....more info - Interesting book
This is my second copy of this book, as I lent it to someone and they apparently stole it... This was recommended to me by a nutritionist for medical reasons, and while the diet is hard to maintain in a real world, the ideas are great for incorporating into your life if this is something you benefit from. I bought the second copy because I needed the recipes at the back of the book! Some of the things seem gross in theory but are actually very good....more info - Acid and alkaline

There is great common sense info here. Eat more veggies, i.e.--alkaline YES!! It will make you feel better. I just wish there was more REAL science in this book , and there is a lot of info that is just not true. Acid is not a dirty word. The stomach is acid for a reason! And the skin which he incorrectly asserts should be alkaline--(look at the products on his website) also maintains a slightly acid mantle for a reason---it keeps out bacteria. I am a health freak, so I love it when someone advocates a healthier, vegan, more alkaline lifestyle. But, I also want accurate, scientific, thoroughly researched info without ANY agenda. And, alas, I can't say that is what this book offers....more info - The pH Miracle
I have spent over 25 years balancing research on and use of integrative or complementary medicine processes to achieve and maintain health. I actually came to the Young's book by accident when I was verifying that I was not at risk for some health issue as a result of drinking our well water which at the time was high alkaline. Amazingly, during that time of high alkaline water, both my husband and I found that health issues we each had had for years were disappearing! I first found the results of the Japanese government into the health benefits of alkaline water and establishing an alkaline environment in the body. Those reviewers who dismiss the Young's work lightly obviiously did not evaluate the pages and pages of references they give to research in this concept. I approached the Young's work with a set of evaluatory criteria and a basic "does it work when I use it" requirement. I am impressed. Even adopting some of the most basic tenets of this approach to nutrition can have a significant effect. And it can happen with just changing basic food and water intake even if you never buy as product from the Youngs or attend a seminar. This is truly self-help at its best and achievable even by folks on a limited income who cannot afford expensive and sometimes less useful supplements. Give it a try if you want to feel real energy and healing with relatively simple self-care!...more info - my lifelong dermatitis - gone
eczema, dermatitis, neurodermitis, whatever you want to call it. i had it. it was all over my body, my skin was red, dry, shedding, oozing, bleeding. since i was a young kid, i went from one dermatologist to the next trying to find ways to ease my pain.
the last doctor i visited - just a week before i bought this book - told me i had to learn to live with it. devestating news.
this book turned not only my skin, but my life around.
there is some comments here, that i have to agree with reluctantly. if you are looking for bullet proof science with decades of accumulated studies and research by well known institutes, you will not find it here. this theory is proven in practice, not in theory.
the big pharma industry - which usually backs elaborate "scientifically accepted" studies - has no interest in supporting somebody in claiming, that total health can be achieved without the use of any kind of medication what so ever.
the knowledge shared in this book has the potential to change your life no matter how sick or old you are.
so many scientific studies have shown how "great" of a remedy the newest creams and patches, pills and therapies offered by the medical industry supposedly are. to me, they where not worth anything. i tried "them all", none did little more than temporarily releaving my symptoms.
whoever proves in practice that their system works - wins.
the informationn this book holds has proven to me to be a winner....more info - EXCELLENT!
This book was just what I needed. Overweight and having stomach problems, this book helped to improve my health and the quality of my life. I enjoyed the many testimonies....more info - Exceptional nutritional advice!

This authors present many of their personal beliefs about the value of an alkaline diet as fact, when there are no studies referenced that back up their claims. Adverse health conditions can occur from either alkalosis or acidosis. In reality, there are health conditions where acid forming diets are often medically recommended, such as in the case of some types of kidney stones and for people suffering from urinary tract infections. Interestingly, a number of studies in recent years have shown that vinegar and coffee, acid forming foods, may help improve insulin sensitivity and thus help control diabetes, a common health problem in the U.S.
On page 32 of the copy of the book I have the authors state that acidification and overgrowth of negative microforms are the root cause of "every symptom, illness and disease." This sweeping statement alone should make readers stop and think. What about conditions like scurvy, Down syndrome, rickets or a protein deficiency? While acid-base balance of body fluids has been established as a factor in human health, there are many other factors such as adequate vitamin and mineral intake, exposure to infectious diseases, genetic make-up, getting enough sleep, exposure to too much or too little sunlight, stress levels, exposure to toxins etc. that all impact health. It is overly simplistic and unsupported by research that acid-base balance is the answer to every health problem that happens to people.
One of the reasons Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine teachings have become popular in the West is that they incorporate the concept of balance. In Eastern medicine if someone's body fluids are too acidic, then they should eat a more alkaline diet to bring things into balance and vice versa. In Eastern medicine there is no single diet that is right for everyone.
Are most people in the U.S. really suffering from chronic acidosis and almost everyone needs a more alkaline diet? Maybe they are, maybe they aren't. You wouldn't really know from reading this book. There are no studies that I could find specifically referenced in this book to back up this claim. As noted above, there are common health conditions such as some types of kidney stones, urinary tract infections and diabetes where research has shown benefits from consuming acid forming foods. The pH Miracle book does list many studies in its reference section, but they are just a list of studies not tied to any specific sections of the text, and most of the titles of the studies didn't seem to have much to do with acid-base balance. ...more info - The pH Miracle, Balance Your Diet, Reclaim Your Health
Dr. Young has raised the bar for eating & reclaiming our health! I now feel I can be in control of my own health & well being! ...more info - Enthusiasm someimes overshadows science
First, a disclaimer. It appears that the principle of limiting food choices in order to raise pH works. Moreover, Young's basic issues match well with other experts, such as Hyman, Fuhrman, and Ornish. I can't argue with the apparent success resulting from following Young's and those other guys' advice.
So what's my gripe? Young makes some statements that are simply absurd. Every few pages he would say something that just set my teeth on edge. The most egregious statement was that sodium would convert to potassium in the body. I think he probably meant that potassium would replace sodium in some compounds in the body. But in his enthusiasm, he made a completely unsupportable claim. Several other apparently exaggerated claims are probably also due to enthusiasm.
My quarrel is probably not with Young himself, but with whomever dropped the ball during the copy editing process. That's a shame because Young has workable advice to give....more info - Interesting diet perspective based on pH and microbiology
The book is not only very well written, but presents a very interesting perspective about nutrion and the disease/ cure connection. It relates the pH residue of food digestion to its impact on the bacterial environment of the body and the connection to most common diseases. It defines diet recommendations based on the pH residue of food, and nutritional values to boost the quality of nutrion and promote natural healing. It gives very practial advice on making appropriate diet changes to correct or ease many health problems. There are different levels of diet based on health conditions. My closest real life experience of this diet approach is the Hippocrates Health Institute in West Palm Beach. Hippocrates' approach comes close to the strictest recommendations of this book, as they work to ease very diverse and often multiple serious disease conditions with 100% raw veagan food combined with gentle exercise, massage, and stress management. Although this diet perspective is not main stream at present, I find the diet recommendations very sound as they mostly fit within the current science based recommendations, but only go further. The question is how far is one willing to change their diet habits. Every one can decide based on how they feel about their health and wellbeing. This book can be a guideline or an inspiration to many who are interested in achieving optimum health with diet....more info
