Product Description

Pete Egoscue learned a lot about pain when, as a Marine officer, he was wounded in Vietnam. He segued from patient to physical therapist, and now runs a famous clinic in San Diego, where he claims he's helped 95 percent of his patients cure chronic pain--including Jack Nicklaus and Charles Barkley, whose athletic careers he helped prolong. At the heart of his program are stretches and motion exercises to restore proper function to muscles and joints. His methods are often surprising and counterintuitive. For example, for foot pain, he suggests a series of hip exercises. In fact, this is one of the most startling books you'll read about the human organism. Egoscue has strong opinions about how modern life is changing the way our bodies function, reducing the tasks we must perform and thus reducing the functional range of motion of our muscles and joints. Fortunately, he offers movement exercises to restore what nature meant us to have.

Starting today, you don't have to live in pain.

That is the revolutionary message of this breakthrough system for eliminating chronic pain without drugs, surgery, or expensive physical therapy. Developed by Pete Egoscue, a nationally renowned physiologist and sports injury consultant to some of today's top athletes, the Egoscue Method has an astounding 95 percent success rate. The key is a series of gentle exercises and carefully constructed stretches called E-cises. Inside you'll find detailed photographs and step-by-step instructions for dozens of motioncizes specifically designed to provide quick and lasting relief of:

  • Lower back pain, hip problems, sciatica, and bad knees
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome and even some forms of arthritis
  • Migraines and other headaches, stiff neck, fatigue, sinus problems, vertigo, and TMJ
  • Shin splints, varicose veins, sprained or weak ankles, and many foot ailments
  • Bursitis, tendinitis, and rotator cuff problems
  • Plus special preventive motioncise programs for maintaining health through the entire body.

With this book in hand, you're on your way to regaining the greatest gift of all: a pain-free body!

Customer Reviews:

  • A great Life Saver
I don't know how people could give this a bad review. If you do what it says in the book, you can't go wrong. Save yourself from the evil pills, surgery and "well intentioned" medical community and use these methods. THEY WORK! Period....more info
  • the title is true to its word
This is the most helpful book EVER for presenting easy and effective exercises/postures for eliminating pain in the body. I can't say enough good things about it as it has helped every single family member overcome painful sprains, pulls, injuries in the last 2 years we've owned it....more info
  • Disappointing!
Poorly organized and confusing. Had hoped to find some advice for dealing with the type of pain I have. Found absolutely nothing. The index is useless and the content repetitive and frustrating! ...more info
  • Should be required reading for doctors, chiropractors; all medical professionals
I bought my first copy of this book on a closeout table several years ago. I have a number of chronic conditions which result in chronic pain. What I liked was the statement that his exercises stop pain right away... hard to believe, but for a few bucks, it was worth a look.

Well, I was, and I remain, ASTOUNDED at how spot-on Pete Egoscue is with his method. It's a simple premise - when your body is in alignment, you have far less pain ... similar to chiropractic philosophy EXCEPT- Egoscue takes it a logical step forward. Your muscles are what hold your bones in place... and if you don't retrain your muscles, no amount of chiropractic adjustments will really help.

His exercises are EASY. There's none of the "hang upside down by your toes" absurd things you find so often in 'methods' which purport to eliminate pain.

I've loaned this book (and finally bought several as loaners and gifts) to friends which both acute and chronic pain issues, and IN EVERY SINGLE case, these exercises helped them dramatically. One friend is dealing with advanced cancer, and somehow got intense sciatica - he said the pain was worse than the cancer! - and he did a few of the exercises from Egoscue's book and eliminated the pain. And this fellow had all the high end pain medications he wanted - they couldn't stop his pain, but the "supine groin stretch" did it. (As an aside, can you imagine how great it feels to really HELP a close friend in a situation like this?)

Now, it WILL stop your pain right away, but the effects won't last indefinitely. You do have to participate here... you do these easy and relatively quick exercises daily for a while... ideally you'll make his whole body routine a part of your daily life. (I didn't, too lazy I guess, but do return to the book whenever I need the help... along with yoga, you can't lose!!)

I can't imagine a better testimonial to this method. It WORKS. Just like he says. Wow....more info
  • If you haven't tried this then you haven't explored your options.
I had five years of chronic knee pain cured doing these knee postures three times. The very straightforward approach of this book is to get your big muscles doing big muscle work again. Pain is caused when the small muscles take over. I am a doctor and have used this effectively with many patient. More accurately I have given them the book and they have done it....more info

  • Full of great information! Lasting results!!
And best of all, you can do it in the comfort of your own home for FREE, once you buy the book for $10--which isn't bad compared to $10,000 or more in medical bills!! With pain and problems left over! I disagree with the author only in that he believes our wonderful bodies evolved over millions of years. He knows much about the body and has great understanding and insight into how to allow the body to TRULY FIX many problems (more than just skelatal!) I'm saddened that this knowledge has not yet led him to the Creator of our amazing bodies. [Psa 139:14] I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

  • It's the thought that counts
I was impressed by the claims of "instant pain relief" by many of the commenters of this book, so I was looking forward to receiving this book as soon as possible. I recently bruised a nerve that caused my thumb to become tingly and I get upper back pain after typing for hours at a time at work, but rest assured, none of the claims came true. Apparently this is a case of the placebo effect and nothing more, i.e. - it will only possibly work if you have blind faith that it will work. For example, none of the exercises ever offered any "instant relief" and I could not feel any beneficial effect like the "loosening of knots" from any of the exercises. I had high hopes for this book because of the theory put forth by the author that many of our modern repetitive motion ills are actually caused by restricting our movements without any compensation for the unused musculature, leading to atrophy (and pain) of the unused musculature. This theory is in harmony with legitimate research of the benefits of movement like that of the neurophysiology of dancing (and how it can be used to treat Parkinson's disease. See SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE? Sci American, June 16, 2008), and it explains how Tai Chi or Qigong can work as so many people have claimed it has (although the claims of enhanced psychic powers is still pure utter nonsense). There is one Hindu Sadhu in RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT who sat with one hand held up in the air for years. He did this for so long that eventually his whole arm and shoulder became permanently fused and even birds would nest in his outstretched hand. When asked what was the most difficult part of his practice, he said enduring the first three months of extreme pain, but after his arm started to fuse in place, the pain went away. While our civilization hasn't gone to that extreme, it does vividly illustrate the validity of the theory. It is only too bad that this book did not deliver on its promises but I guess it is the thought that counts....more info
  • Pain Free is a Painless Investment
After the MRI report my chiropractor, who is actually a neck specialist, suggested surgery for two bulging discs pinching my C7 nerve and possible bone spurs in my neck. I was ready to go under the knife when a chance meeting with Richard Lunceford led me to the Egoscue.com website. He said it's the only method that has helped his bone-on-bone lower back pain after trying many other therapies.

I got Pete's Motion and Pain Free books and performed the exercises in blind faith thinking there's no way this would work. One week later, I felt better. One month later the pain, stiffness and tingling shooting through my shoulder, arm, hand and upper chest shrunk about 50%.

I kept adding more exercises to my daily routine and can feel muscles strengthening my neck and back. I rarely visit my chiropractor because I can now get rid of back pain faster through proper stretching. These exercises have allowed me to become faster and stronger on the basketball court.

I'm focusing on my aligning my hips right now. And I still haven't registered for the 8-week course at the Del Mar clinic. I just followed the books.

Hard to imagine a few months ago I was faced with having screws and plates fused inside my neck. Your book is a godsend.

  • Exceptional Pain Relief
This book has literally changed my life. In the space of 6 months, I had a baby, broke my hip and had my back go completely out (SI joint dysfunction). I spent 6 weeks in physical therapy and 2 weeks at the Chiropractor's office. Literally 3 days after starting the exercises in this book I was able to stop using my cane. 5 days later I was nearly pain free. I have been doing these exercises for 6 weeks and feel better than I have in years. My pain is completely gone and I have better range of motion, coordination and balance than I had at age 20. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. ...more info

Egoscue is a leader in his field, no question about that. The book is well written and easy to follow. The exercises are easy to do, and best of all they work. • It really works!
I have found Egoscue Method to be remarkable effective. A few years ago, I saw an orthopedist, who said that I had a spondylolisthesis in the lower lumbar vertebra. What he told me boiled down to "put up with the pain until it's too much for you, then we'll operate". I had reached that point. I could not stand up straight, and any standing was very uncomfortable. If I took a wrong step, or made a wrong motion, the pain was so intense that I would fall to my knees.

About that time, one of my friends sent me the Pain Free book, and I tried the suggested therapy out of desperation. In three weeks, I could stand up straight, and the severe pain was gone, and never returned. This is not to say that the problem was corrected, but even if things hadn't gotten any better, I would have been very happy.

I continued the therapy from the book for another month or so, at which time I found the San Jose clinic. Once I started treatment there, my back started to get much better - fast. Every time I thought I'd reached a plateau, I would make another significant improvement. Today, ten months later, I am basically without pain, and my range of motion is very much improved. I can even run without discomfort - something I haven't been able to do for years and years. I can tell that my condition can still be improved, but I would say that I'm now back to "normal", or somewhere close. I certainly plan on continuing the therapy.

  • PAIN FREE
    PAIN FREE by Pete Egoscue

This book is an excellent guide with exercises to help anyone align naturally one's body for a pain free existence. I have bought several copies and given them to complainers of pain and tell them of Dr. Egoscue's call in XM radio medical show on Saturday morning. With the directions in this book I was able to confirm what I learned about my own shoulder/elbow pain and how to heal the pain with the right exercises....more info

Pain Free: A Revolutionary Method for Stopping Chronic Pain
This is a fabulous book. I had borrowed it from a a friend and decided I wanted my own copy. The concept is when your muscles are not strong your body is out of alignment and causes pain. The exercises don't require any expensive equipment and they work. The exercises also are not exhausting nor time consuming. In a few minutes a day you can do them. I love this book and system....more info

  • It really does work if you follow the exercises precisely.
I injured my back from a massive impact I received while snowmobiling. I was in pretty rough shape for months. I bought this book after searching online and immediately began using the exercises.

Things improved, but just moderately. I couldn't figure out why I would be one of the few to get so-so results, especially with all the glowing reviews. So I was a bit disappointed.

But then I went back and scrutinized the exercises.

    That's what finally did it...

The exercises are very simple, but they have very important subtleties and details that you must not overlook or skip. Following them precisely is essential. As an example, one of the exercises requires you to sit with your back flat against the wall. That's easy enough (or so you would think), but then come the other components. You need to flex your toes (feet) back towards your chest while keeping your quadriceps (front thigh muscles) tightly contracted. To this add resting the backs of your hands on the top of your thighs while at the same time pressing your shoulder blades back into the wall. Now hold this for a few minutes.

May not sound that difficult (and really it's not) but keeping all of these muscles engaged for extended periods requires keeping your attention pinned to what you're doing.

This is why the exercises didn't seem to work for me initially. When the author tells you to keep your toes flexed back towards your chest, he means to do it the entire time.

When I finally figured out all the nuances and got everything working at once, it was -- to be honest -- excruciatingly painful... but oh what a sweet pain it was. After two key exercises in the very next exercise session virtually all the pain was gone. It vanished completely shortly thereafter and has never reappeared since (6 years now).

This one you can order with confidence -- the exercises really do work....more info
  • Life changing

  • Pain Free the easy way
I bought this book with some skepticism. After all I've had doctor's and therapists tell me that I just have to deal with the pain and take drugs to mask it. The only solutions in the past were surgery. If I had known about this method before having four shoulder, and 1 ankle surgery, I feel certain I never would have "needed" any of them!

Hindsight being 20/20 there's nothing I can do about it except share my experience and hope that people will at least try Mr. Egoscue's methods before going under the knife. I even read in my local newpaper that a player from the San Francisco Giants recommended it to a player from the Oakland A's and he said it's the first time he's had relief from back pain in a couple of years.

Even if you're not experiencing cronic pain yet I highly recommend this book. All of us have gotten in to terrible body habits for one reason or another, including myself, and his stretches help "line you back up." I was so blown away when I read that unless you have a birth defect or been in a serious accident as a child you don't have a leg lenght difference. I was told 15 years ago that I did, and I don't suffer from any sort of birth or injury defect! I can't tell you how much money I've wasted putting lifts on shoes that I didn't need!

Get this book, read it from cover to cover, and then start stretching!!! ...more info
  • I love this book!
My massage therapist suggested this book because I was having pretty severe shoulder pain. After starting the e-cises recommended in the book, the pain was almost completely gone within 48 hours. I had been suffering for a month! Because this book makes so much sense, I do the daily exercises now. Pete Egoscue explains things in such a way that each chapter has an "ah-ha" moment. I don't want to get myself in that position again so 15 minutes a day is nothing compared to the benefits to my body....more info

  • Worked for me
Every once in awhile one encounters not only an expert in his field but also someone who is head and shoulders above others in his field.

The author is such a person. He has remarkable insight as to the cause of pain as a result of dysfunctional musculoskeletal problems. In addition, he has developed unique exercises to correct the dysfunction.

He recommends specific exercises for specific pain. Once the pain is gone, he recommends daily exercises to forestall any reoccurrence.

My several year problem with pain from plantar fasciitis is gone and my more recent shoulder pain is gone.

    Highly recommended.

  • Excellent Results
I'm a chiropractor, and I give a copy of this book to almost all my patients. The results are excellent. The only drawback is that doing the e-cises is time-consuming, so patient compliance is an issue. But for those who take the time to do them, the difference in function can be dramatic.

As Pete Egoscue (pronounced e-GAW-skew) would tell you, there is only room in the book for a few dozen e-cises of the hundreds he has developed. So if you want a more customized program, you can go to egoscue.com to get a list of trained people in your area or to find out how to get a video evaluation and personalized menu of e-cises. ...more info

  • Worked Well for Me
In the middle of a cruise (talk about a ruined vacation!) I tweaked my lower back trying to lift luggage. A couple of days later I couldn't put any weight on my left leg due to excruciating pain in the left hip that would radiate down the leg. Boy was I having fun!
This became worse with muscle spasms in the left thigh that made sleeping impossible (not to mention that finding a comfortable position was just not happening).
A person in the next cabin heard of my dilemma and let me borrow her copy of Pain Free. I started (gingerly at first since all movement was difficult) the recommended "e-cises" for lower back and hips and was able to move around relatively pain free in around a week. Not bad since I was certain that I was headed for back surgery or a hip replacement.
I haven't needed any chiro adjustments or any other type of treatment since (I had been going to a chiro on and off up to the date of the injury and even received a few adjustments from a chiro that was on the ship just after the injury...didn't hurt but didn't seem to help).
Keep in mind that I went for x-rays and even had urine tests to ensure the pain wasn't radiating from a bad kidney. What I'm saying is be sure what you're dealing with.
When I first started following the books recommendations it became obvious that my hips had rotated. I can say with confidence that they are now, perhaps for the first time in many years, back to where they belong and providing the support they are designed to provide.
    Thank you Mr. Egoscue!

  • Really works, but you must commit
This book helped me get out of chronic pain, and dependency on chiropractors for "feeling normal". It took a while, and regular commitment, but I'm a believer. The book is great, but you can also order personalized "menus" from the Egoscue Institute itself that are very helpful and affordable (just in case you have a pain issue that you may not know how to address with the book). I believe that Pete Egoscue is definitely onto something. The bones do what the muscles tell them to, plain and simple. I found it easy to look up my areas of pain, and follow the routines in the book, then graduate to the next routine as things evolved and changed.

An added bonus is mental relief. Seriously, once you get out of chronic physical discomfort or pain, the biochemical relationships between your endocrine system, your neurological function, and the way your body feels gradually improve in time. Everything is connected....more info
  • Finally Relief After 15 years of low back pain
I highly recommend this book. I was at my wit's end trying to get relief for my lower back pain which started 15 yrs ago (I am 54). I've been to 3 chiropractors, tried stretching exercises, lost 30 lbs, bought a memory foam topper for the bed, but the pain gradually got worse. I'd wake up every night with painful back spasms. I even asked my husband to switch sides with me in bed since I could only sleep on my left side with minimal discomfort. Then a friend recommended this book. The FIRST NIGHT I experienced significantly less pain. I've been doing the E-cises every day for the last 3 wks and I feel so good I can hardly believe it. My friends say I look 10 yrs younger because I'm getting my sleep. I spend almost an hour doing the E-cises. If I skip a day, the pain returns, so I make sure to do them every day. Do yourself a favor and get this book....more info
