Book Description
For the first time in our history, scientists are uncovering astounding medical evidence about dieting--and why so many of us struggle with our weight and the size of our waists. Now researchers are unraveling biological secrets about such things as why you crave chocolate or gorge at buffets or store so much fat.

Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz, America's most trusted doctor team and authors of the bestselling YOU series, are now translating this cutting-edge information to help you shave inches off your waist. They're going to do it by giving you the best weapon against fat: knowledge. By understanding how your body's fat-storing and fat-burning systems work, you're going to learn how to crack the code on true and lifelong waist management.

Roizen and Oz will invigorate you with equal parts information, motivation, and change-your-life action to show you how your brain, stomach, hormones, muscles, heart, genetics, and stress levels all interact biologically to determine if your body is the size of a baseball bat or of a baseball stadium. In YOU: On a Diet, Roizen and Oz will redefine what a healthy figure is, then take you through an under-the skin tour of the organs that influence your body's size and its health. You'll even be convinced that the key number to fixate on is not your weight, but your waist size, which best indicates the medical risks of storing too much fat.

Because the world has almost as many diet plans as it has e-mail spammers, you'd think that just about all of us would know everything there is to know about dieting, about fat, and about the reasons why our bellies have grown so large. YOU: On a Diet is much more than a diet plan or a series of instructions and guidelines or a faddish berries-only eating plan. It's a complete manual for waist management. It will show you how to achieve and maintain an ideal and healthy body size by providing a lexicon according to which any weight-loss system can be explained. YOU: On a Diet will serve as the operating system that facilitates future evolution in our dieting software. After you learn about the biology of your body and the biology and psychology of fat, you'll be given the YOU Diet and YOU Workout. Both are easy to learn, follow, and maintain. Following a two-week rebooting program will help you lose up to two inches from your waist right from the start.

With Roizen and Oz's signature accessibility, wit, and humor, YOU: On a Diet--The Owner's Manual for Waist Management will revolutionize the way you think about yourself and the food you consume, so that you'll diet smart, not hard. Welcome to your body on a diet.

"Fat Chances: The Secret Story of What's in Your Belly" by Michael F. Roizen, MD, and Mehmet C. Oz, MD
Whether you're carrying a few extra pounds of fat on your thighs or a suitcase's worth in your belly, it's hard not to think about fat. You feel it when you walk, you roll on it when you sleep, and you curse it when you try to slide into last year's jeans. But while most of us are intimately familiar with how fat looks on the outside, we're not quite as familiar with how it works on the inside.

As we explain in YOU: On a Diet, we believe that to change your body, you need to know your body.

In the simplest form, everyone knows the formula for gaining weight. Daily buckets of ranch dip plus photo-album-sized hunks of cheesecake plus a life of couch-dwelling equals a very unfortunate conclusion: too-frequent popped buttons.

But many of us really don't know how fat works and how it works against us. Here's the inside story on the story of your insides.

Customer Reviews:

  • Good for those who need a foundation in nutrition and weight loss
While this book can be tedious, with its 'dumbed-down' illustrations and YOU-reka interruptions, for someone who is new to studying nutrition and wants to learn how food is affecting their body, this is a very useful book. I especially appreciated the way the authors presented the effects of saturated fats on our arteries, and their introduction to the omentum - an organ that many of us never learned about in school. The tips about the effects of cinnamon on insulin resistance and eating nuts before a meal as a weight-loss aid will be very new information for some.

People who already have a good education in nutrition and biology will likely find this book too simplistic, but for many others, this book presents valuable information in a highly accessible format. I really recommend it for anyone who wants to understand why diets are making them fat....more info
  • You on a Diet
You on a Diet is an excellent resource for anyone who reads it! The author explains what happens to the food you eat, how your body uses it and the best ways to take care of it. The information could get very technical, but the authors describe everything in layman's terms in an interesting and funny way! Highly recommended!!...more info
  • Slow at beginning but good information overall
Almost annoying at first with its tempo....too elementary. Then lots of the technical stuff....the diet itself is sound and does work. It is a healthy lifestyle. Still using the book as a reference but unable to make myself read the thing straight through....more info
  • Chapter 6 - The Sex Factor - Progestin? Are you kidding?
The Sex Factor: The last sentence on page 134 reads, "Now, estrogen works great when it gets paired up with, or balanced by, another ovarian messenger called progestin, which gets released from the egg sac (called corpus luteum) after the follicle ships out its egg."
Give me a break! My female body has never produced a drop of progestin in my entire life! Don't Doctors Roizen and Oz know the difference between progestin and progesterone? Does anybody who helped edit this book know the difference?
I'm disappointed to have found this mistake, and I'm wondering how many other mistakes there are, and how seriously I should take this book?
From a woman who knows the difference between progestin and progesterone.

  • RECOMMENDED FOR EVERYONE--not just those on a diet
This is a fantastic book that is full of information. It is an easy read and takes complicated material and puts it in plain language that anyone can understand. The amount of material in this book is HUGE. It is definitely a book that you will benefit from owning rather than just giving it a once over read. I refer to it over and over again.

This book is more of a health manual than a diet plan. It is explains how food reacts in your body and why different foods help you feel full and others make you crave more. For me, it makes it a lot easier to make healthy choices because I understand the why behind it. It is also a book that motivates me.

The information in this book isn't just for people that need or want to lose weight. The principals apply to everyone. ...more info

  • A cut above
This is not your typical run of the mill, heard it all before kind of diet book. This book explains in user friendly scientific terms how the body works and it'S humorous approach makes the book entertaining and highly informative at the same time. I've read plenty of diet books through the years and this one leaves them all in the dust. Throw all your diet books away and get this one. You won't be sorry!...more info

  • From the Author of Outstanding You
Outstanding You: Discover, Design and Achieve Ultimate Fitness

Perhaps the most important aspect of fitness is understanding your own body. This book provides another perspective on dieting. For that reason, I recommend at least reading it for the different viewpoint you may pick up. I rated it high because I find the more information, the better. Even if you decide not to use some, most or all of the information in the book, it's good to have that information anyway. The fitness field is largely unregulated - and diets are constantly going and coming. Only you can know what's best for you - and the only real way to do that is to learn as much as you can....more info

  • Good book, but same old low-fat advice
You: On A Diet doesn't just lay out a diet plan, but addresses what goes on when we eat and the various chemicals in our bodies that effect our behaviors and body shape.

Part 1 is a sort of introduction to your body.

Part 2 is about appetite, your digestive system, inflammation, body fat, metabolism, and exercise. If you have ever wondered how food acts in your body and how food can effect how you feel and whether you store fat or burn it, this is the section for you.

Part 3 focuses on how your mind effects your diet - emotions and psychology.

Part 4 outlines the actual You diet and exercise plan and has a whole chapter about staying on plan by making "YOU-Turns" whenever you fall off the plan (and who sticks 100% to any diet 100% of the time?).

The appendices cover medical intervention - drugs that cane help you lose weight, plastic surgery for saggy skin, and various bariatric procedures (stomach stapling, etc.).

Throughout the book are little cartoons that illustrate the points made in the text. I found these helpful even though I am not a visual person.

My main criticism is that they trot out the same old low-fat advice that hasn't helped America yet, and that they promote unhealthy vegetable oils. Neither do I believe that saturated fat is the enemy, though Mehmet and Oz do.

This book is a good start, but I urge people to go beyond this and read more about vegetable oils and saturated fat and see if Mehmet and Oz are right in their views or not. Personally, the only oils I allow in my house are olive and coconut. Yes, coconut oil is a saturated fat....more info

  • Comprehensive!
I am still working through the volume of information contained in this book. And, no, I am not skipping ahead to the chapter with their actual diet in it just yet! As someone who has struggled with my weight off and on (more on than off), I know I need to learn the why I am fat, not just the how to be thin, and I think I found the book which will truly educate me. The text is written in everyday language that you and I speak to each other, not medical high brow stuff. From the tone, I know I would also enjoy this book on tape! My only criticism, which may or may not be fair as I see the merit in it, is that some of the pages are overwhelming with "tips" in one corner, and a cartoon in the other, and the actual text from the page before somewhere in the middle. Sometimes this busy-ness gets in the way of the awesome information contained in all these sections -- if that makes any sense.

Anyway, I strongly recommend this book. I also strongly recommend catching the doctors on the Discovery Health channel when they are on. I love their down to earth approach to health. I would love to have them clean out my refrigerator and scare the fat off me with their outside the box tactics. They are just wonderful! More Manuals please!...more info
  • Great book
Excellent book. Thoroughly explains how we get fat, what it looks like inside the body- and how to change that. Good basic plan of eating nutritionally and exercising for the benefit of the body circulation. Recommends walking- which most people can do and afford, an achievable goal for most....more info
  • The Book that Changed my Life!
First of all, my Amazon name - Lovestocook- says it all about me! Yes, I love to cook and bake, but I also was sick of being fat and gaining...gaining....gaining! At 49 years old, I made it to 205 pounds. No kids to blame it on, just me! And looking forward to menopause. More weight.

I didn't want to do it but I bought the book after seeing Dr. Roizen on a PBS presentation of this book. The proof was in the pudding, so to speak. This book gently takes you by the hand and tells you clearly that you are killing yourself if you don't mend your ways. It is a very simple and straight forward approach to follow.

One of my favorite sections was about exercise, which I had always avoided my entire life. Thank God he tells us in the book and also shows us how to exercise SMARTER, not harder! If there was any cheating, this was it! Getting off easy with a thirty minute walk and a 20 minute program as illustrated in the book.

The food was so simple. Get rid of saturated fats, white flour, sugar, and eat whole grains, non fat or even low fat dairy. No calories to count, just use your own judgement. That was the scary part. It came down to 1200-1500 calories for me. Trial and error and note taking. I measured myself and weighed myself at regular intervals and guess what? My waist began to shrink and the scale moved lower every week! Long story short: In 9 months I lost 50 pounds! I went from a difficult size 16 pants to a size 8 pants and 10 for dresses! I lost 5" from my chest, 3" from each upper arm, 6.25" from my waist, 6.25 inches from my hips, 4.75 inches from each thigh, and 1" from each calf! I also realized that exercise wasn't so bad after all and I switched from the book's program to working out 5 days a week with light dumbbells 30 minutes a day.

Following this book and getting off of the couch transformed my life. I have also kept my weight off for over a year! That is 2 Christmas holidays, folks! And guess what? My sugar/junk food cravings were gone within a couple of weeks. Yeah, sometimes I still dream about "what if I could eat a box of donuts..." But I don't dare take up the challenge! I have replaced that fantasy with "what if the airlines lost my suitcase?" That is a happy thought! Now I know I could go to a local department store and replace every thing within 30 minutes, knowing all of the clothes would fit! Never more will I have to struggle and try on every single pair of pants a store has to offer just to try to find one pair that fit! BUY THIS BOOK AND FOLLOW IT! I am so happy I did, it changed my life! It will change your life, too!

  • Physicians On Diet
How refreshing to have physicians write scientifically-based books that promote a healthy body, healthy living, and disease prevention. Maybe these authors will inspire their colleagues to talk more to patients about living healthfully. The book is written in a way that makes nutrition and physiological insights readable and understandable by people who do not have a strong science background. The emphasis is on trimming your waistline rather than focusing on weight. The authors explain the interaction of the brain, hormones, muscles, stomach, heart, and genes in dictating body size. They provide information on diet and exercise, and include a two week program. I hope our authors are closing the chasm between patients and doctors by raising issues that patients can further discuss with their doctors resulting in healthier patients. Also recommend The 2007 Second Expert Report, Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective. • WARNING -- nicotine recommended!
I like this book, but I cannot in good conscience recommend it without one warning. Near the end there is a discussion about ways to boost metabolism when weight loss is stalled. They recommend nicotine as a way to rev up the body's engine. Not nicotine in cigarettes or spit tobacco, they emphasize, but in the form of nicotine replacement products like gum or patches.

PLEASE DO NOT FOLLOW THAT SUGGESTION. I think this is short-sighted. Get on nicotine to lose weight and you'll then be an overweight person who has a fiendish addiction. Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances in the world and is also one of the most dangerous. Nicotine is poison and that is not hyperbole. You don't need to smoke nicotine for it to sicken, cripple, and ultimately kill you. For serious no-nonsense information about nicotine and about nicotine addiction please do an online search for "Joel Spitzer" and "cold turkey" and "why quit". ...more info

  • This book is excellent.
I enjoy reading it with my 7 year-old daughter as I embark on my weight loss program. She loves the illustrations - they are so cute and funny!

The book itself is a gem. It offers common sense advice for a change of lifestyle to a more natural way of eating and viewing food, plus a work out regime that you can stick to your whole life - moderate daily exercise with strength training on alternate days. Our bodies are meant to be used. Even if we are slim or have managed to lose weight, how healthy could our bodies be without regular exercise?

The area on chronic low-level stress vis-a-vis accumulated belly fat was a real eye-opener for me also.

  • Childish pictures and kindergarten prose is a WASTE of this "male's" time!
This volume is frustrating !!! I've seen the author, Michael F. Roizen, on PBS and he has said over & over that "the pictures are for the men".

I DON'T BELIEVE HIM. I DON'T BELIEVE THESE CHILDISH CARTOONS AND KINDERGARTEN PROSE WAS INTENDED FOR THE MALE AUDIENCE. [I think his explanation is an after thought, intentionally designed to hide the truth.]

The author, at best, seems to be using a liberal helping of euphemisms ,,, although I have no idea who they are afraid of offending or not getting through to ,,, other then females !!!

I believe, in retrospect, the author [publisher] reflected upon their intention of such infantile euphemisms, which were originally for women and switched, because of the offending response they received from some women who probably felt they were being fed "dumbed-down" information as exemplified by the infantile pictures and prose ,,, the author [publisher] in response to the female criticism ,,, manufactured a "new" intent ,,, now the infantile pictures and childish verbosity is for the "male" audience !!!

There is no way I will ever believe these childish cartoons and baby-talk prose was intended for the male audience !!! NO WAY !!! -- Such nonsense completely turns me off and has relegated this volume to the garbage can !!!

Also negative in this volume are the often used "highly technical terms" which ARE NOT FULLY SUPPORTED with meaningful and mature "definition" but instead [again] are defined with baby-talk and cartoons, cartoons in which I find absolutely NO help or meaning. They're more like children scribbling.

On the positive side ,,, if you manage to sift through the verbose childishness, dumb-down prose and useless cartoons ,,, you can find some very worthy information, albeit very hard to locate in this toy box of nonsense.

    Sincerely,
    Matthew

  • Simply put, it works
This book is the first I read in Oz and Roizen's YOU series. I have since been hooked and have enjoyed all of their books and specials on the Discovery Health network.

Practical and effective advice fills the pages of this book. The authors include detailed information on how the body works as it relates to satiety, storing fat, burning fat, good and bad foods, and why being overweight is so very unhealthy. Even readers who are not interested in the "why" and medical jargon can benefit from the advice. The book is written in a friendly accessible style that makes it an enjoyable read. Although the humor is a bit corny at times, you won't be able to hold back a smile.

By applying the principals and useful tips in this book I have lost 65 pounds, improved my cholesterol levels to "excellent" in all categories, and dropped my blood pressure numbers to that of a teenager. This was possible without going on a restrictive or bland diet. In fact, I ate cookies, cake, fried chicken, and drank non-diet soda (in moderation) while still losing weight. It doesn't have to be difficult!

Let Oz and Roizen help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight without going hungry or depriving yourself of your favorite foods. Don't let previous failures discourage you from buying this book. Diets will always fail and this book even explains why. Changing your diet and implementing practical techniques will result in success. YOU can do it!...more info

You: On A Diet: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management by Mehmet C. Oz and Michael F. Roizen is a book about the modern evidence we now have on dieting and weight loss. This book will help you understand why you crave certain foods and store so much fat. Your best defense against fat is knowledge. You will learn how and why your body stores fat, and how to efficiently work your fat-burning system.

  • A fun and extremely informative book
This fun and extremely informative book is an owner's manual for the human waist, that flabby bit that, for most of us, arrives everywhere first, making a big impression. The two medical researchers who wrote this book give you an in-depth look at you, food and weight. They take you on a tour of hunger, how you digest food, why you get fat, the effects of being fat, and what you can and should (and should not!) do to lose weight.

Overall, I found this to be a fascinatingly informative book. I really enjoyed the authors' description of how your hunger and digestive systems work (the two are not the same, though they do overlap), and their advice on losing inches off of your waist (which is much more important than simply losing pounds). The authors take a fun, sometimes whimsical, style, which kept the book from being too heavy...and I do like a bit of fun.

I found the advice to be mostly common sense, and non-radical, which I like. I fear diets in which the authors tell you to do things that seem strangely out of balance with the way humans have always lived. So, if you are interested in learning why the pounds are so hard to remove, and want a no-nonsense plan for getting thinner, then get this book. I highly recommend it!...more info

  • I'm so disappointed in this book!
I'm really glad that I got this book from the library and didn't buy it. I really dislike the writing style and presentation -- what a disappointment! Dr. Oz is so interesting when he appears on Oprah and this book is nothing like what I would expect from him, it's just awful. Another reviewer said that they can understand adding some levity to what might otherwise be very dry content, but in EVERY paragraph! I agree. The constant quips become very distracting!! Here are some examples of what you'll read a LOT of...(pg. 78) "They say that a woman thinks with her heart, and a man thinks with his personal periscope, but when it comes to sheer anatomy, the organ closest to your brain isn't the one that flutters over a midnight serenade or the one that tingles over a lingerie catalog. It's the one that coils through your gut like a sleeping python." (Pg. 129) "So, while you may think that spinning class or Bikram yoga is the primary pathway to frying fat, physical activity is only a fraction of it. You burn most of your calories by keeping your heart pumping, your brain remembering your spouse's birthday, and your liver disposing of last night's vodka concoction." (pg. 130) "Sure, we all know that raging hormones can make a teenage boy become sex obsessed or give a menopausal woman hot flashes so bad she feels as though she's in Death Valley in August. But you may not know that your hormones have a lot to do with whether or not you're going to look good in a Speedo." What on Earth is that all about? Perhaps I prefer a more straightforward writing style and you might enjoy that type of writing, but I still can't help but wonder what their editor was thinking when he read this nonesense. In addition to that, the "Factoids," "Myth Busters" and other tidbits of information that could have been very helpful to the reader, instead are inserted in the middle of paragraphs on every page are just all over the place. I suggest that you check this book out from the local library before buying it because you might save yourself some money. I'm glad I did. Sorry, Dr. Oz! ...more info

  • Lost 70 pounds and 7 inches from my waist.
I bought this book here about 4 years ago. I read about 3/4ths of it. I never read the recipes. I just used the principles of the book, and it worked. I lost 70 pounds and went from a size 38 inch waist to a 31 inch waist. It took 2 and a half years. It slowed down for a few months toward the end then suddenly started coming off again. The best part of it was that it was easy, and I have kept it off for a year and a half now. I tried lots of things before this. Some of the methods took the weight off, and some of them didn't. All of the other methods I used required pure will power, and I couldn't stay on them because I felt like I was starving all the time. With the other methods I usually gained it back quickly, plus some. I wish I could post my before and after pictures. My blood pressure and LDL cholesterol came down. I look better, feel better, and have fewer back aches. I am going to be 52 in May 2009 and I feel better than I did when I was 45. I even get sick less often, and miss less work. If I ran a health insurance company I would give a copy of this book to everyone who is either over weight or at risk for diabetes, heart attack, stroke, or had high cholesterol. If even 1/3 of the people who received the book had the results I did it would save the insurance company a ton of money in the reduction of claims and more than pay for the books. I forgot to mention, this is not a diet. This is a lifestyle plan that is easy to stay on after the weight is off. I can't imagine going back and eating the way I did before. I don't even like eating that way now that I know how enjoyable it is to eat healthy. I also recommend signing up at realage.com for great health tips....more info
  • Easy Read Great Info
This was a very easy read and is very logical. I have learned a lot from it and putting it into my families daily meal plan.
