    I have been following Dr. Fuhrman for several years now. I started with his book "Eat to Live". That is excellent as well but can be a little daunting to many folks. Eat for Health allows a person to ease their way into this high nutrient way of eating. Whether you need to lose some weight, are dealing with diabetis, heart disease, or just want to be healthier - these are the books for you!! First he explaines the science behind it all and then there are wonderful recipes to follow or just give you ideas. I give the books and Dr. Fuhrman a big thumbs up.   • Excellent Book for Your Health
    This 2 book set is used by my local Internist GP Group as the basis for a 10 week, 20 hours health seminar. Obviously some very knowledgeable physicians deem it to be a valuable resource. The book is NOT a diet in the sense of having to restrict eating quantities or having to measure this or that or being concentrated on one particular food. Rather, it is a 'way of eating', a lifestyle that stresses the micro-nutrients needed by anyone to properly nourish the body and especially the brain. Having studied nutrition for over 25 years, from macro-biotics to veganism and everything in between, I can attest that this book summarizes and presents scientificaly, a great deal of critical data we all need for Health. It proves that vegetables, particularly greens, fruits, tofu, and whole grains are the key to health. It shuns all meats, dairy products, processed foods, refined sugars and starchy foods as extremely detrimental to Health. Since switching away from the SAD (Standard American Diet)I have lost pounds effortlessly, without going hungry in the least, and my BP has literally plunged to well below the "average" of 120/80. I have been weaned from several medications by my GP and feel great. But, do not buy this book unless you truly wish to make a positive, lasting healthy change to your life. If you are addicted to eating ice cream, candy, steak, chicken, fish (extremely polluted by mankind), white breads, white rice, potatoes, cheese, cow milk, etc. and unwilling to make any change, don't bother. Personally I would be hard pressed to know of any intelligent, sensible human being who, having carefully read these books, would NOT be motivated to change. Obesity and its dreadful side effects is going to bankrupt Medicare in about 25 years. It is a ticking time-bomb ready to expode with horrid consequences for the entire medical system. Do yourself a favor: get healthy, eat smart, get rest, don't smoke, don't drink or use narcotics or weeds, lose weight, exercise and you will have a long, happy, Healthy Life.   • a great book if you liked eat to live
    I decided to buy this book for family members that weren't overweight,
    after feeling horrible for over a year my doctor recommended Eat To Live, however I was the only person in my family who was overweight and so no one else wanted to read my book about healthy eating, however some of the family showed some interest, I found that they were more willing to read a book if it wasn't all about weight. I really liked reading this book, It touched on a few things that Eat to Live didn't, plus it gave an easier, slower program to eat Healthy, I felt less intimidated after reading it and have been able to stick with the plan, even if you don't follow this 100% you will feel a huge effect. after 3 weeks I had lost 16 lbs, started sleeping through the night (i have not slept all night in 3 years) After a month I have been able to start exercising and keep up with my high energy 3 year old son. Plus I have no desire to eat junk!! it just does not even look good. sure I get a few cravings (I was craving pepsi, after one sip i found it to be too sweet and just nasty) I am so glad my dr. recommended Dr. fuhrman to me, it has changed my life for the best.   • Don't Let the Negative Views deter you....
    from these wonderful books. I have Dr. Fuhrman's Eat to Live book and as a result of reading it I changed my diet and am now a vegetarian(leaning vegan). I don't regret making the change 5 months ago to eat healthier.

    I recently purchased the Eat For Health books and I am so glad that I did not let the negative reviews hinder my decision. THESE TWO BOOKS ARE WONDERFULL and wonderfully practical. The books are easy to read and understand. Dr. Fuhrman offers practical ways to incorporate his suggestions.

    The books have something for everyone. If you don't want to give up meat, you don't have to because he shows you how to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables you consume while still eating animal products. And if like me, you desire to eat a strictly vegetarian diet, he shows you how to do it. There are a wide range of recipes, vegan and non-vegan recipes for those that desire to eat meat.

    Two of the features I like most is the rating of healthy foods and also his helpful mix and match charts for making soups/stews and smoothies. These charts are quick reference and easy to use. For the soups: pick a base (like tomato juice), pick a leafy green (like cabbage), pick an onion family member (like garlic), pick other vegetables, pick a flavor (like bay leaf) and pick a bean (like split peas). Now this is fast food!!!

    As I read Dr. Fuhrman's books I can tell that he is really interested in helping the reader live a disease free life. And I love the fact that he writing is not technical and over my head!!!

    I am convinced that those people that rate these books poorly, merely want to hold on to their bad eating habits instead of putting forth the effort to eat more fruits and vegetables and exercise!!!

    My goal in life is to live disease free and free of the need to take perscription medication. Fortunately, Dr. Fuhrman has shown me just how to make my goal a reality. ...more info

  • Vegetarian Made Easy
    I've already read Dr. Fuhrman's Eat to Live book. It was informative, however, what I found more refreshing about Eat For Health was the doctor's attitude about traditional medicines. As someone who has had many health issues and been to doctors who want to medicate for everything, Dr. Fuhrman's approach and thoughts were uplifting. He explains--just as he did in Eat to Live--what the causes and effects are from our food choices.

    While I understand that he does lead you to his website and mentions many items that are available there, it does not take away from the main message. I grew up in a typical Italian family, where pasta and meat was a staple. This drew me away from any meals that are vegetable based, but the recipes and explanations I've read in Eat For Health have made it much easier to abide by a vegan lifestyle. I've been following his meal plan for about two months and have seen a significant weight loss, as well as the "loss" of some of my medications. It actually will make you feel liberated.   • overpriced for what it is
    I finally ordered this set since I had a 25. Amazon coupon. Sent it back the following day!!! The first book is basically a review of Eat to Live, the second book has the same recipes as Eat to Live, the rest are member contributions from his PAID website and many are NOT vegetarian. The ingredients utilize the foods he sells on his site. (more money to fatten his wallet) There is one recipe per page, no index and I think he had quite a nerve even to present these two books. What a creep!...more info
  • The Proof Is In The "Pudding"
    For me, the amazing success Dr. Fuhrman has had treating and reversing a broad spectrum of diseases gives the nutrient-dense eating style he promotes a lot of credibility.

    With his adamant defending of meat and dairy, I suspect Joe White might be a "Pricer". (A member of the Weston A Price Foundation.)

    Regardless, I'm sure there are a lot sickly North Americans out there who have absolutely no interest in giving up any animal-based foods. It seems to me a near-ideal opportunity to compare Mr. White's ( and possibly the Weston A Price Foundation's ) relatively mild intervention of simply replacing processed foods with high-nutrient whole plant foods, to the more aggressive dietary intervention advocated by Dr. Fuhrman. Personally, I'd be shocked if the diet style recommended by Mr. White had anywhere near the same impact on heart disease and type 2 diabetes as the one recommended by Dr. Fuhrman.

    While I'd love to see the results of a trial like this, if I knew someone with advanced vascular disease, I'd strongly discourage them from signing up for what I consider to be, at best, Mr. White's half-measures, and at worst, a near-placebo effect.

  • Great advice for great health
    I bought these books because I read Dr. Fuhrman's book, Eat to Live: The Revolutionary Formula for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss a few years ago and was very impressed. This set of books is even better. Dr. Fuhrman who has helped thousands of people get their health back or keep it, explains in easy to understand language why we need to eat lots of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds. I never understood before reading his books how vitally important green vegetables are. It's not just the vitamins and minerals we know about, but all the phyto-nutrients that are still being discovered. When given this information, I had good reason to include more in my diet. I also learned that taking a multi-vitamin isn't the same as eating vitamin rich real foods.

    These books go beyond his first book in rating different foods on their nutrient density. There are pages of food listings with different scores which makes it easier to decide what foods to eat more of and what foods to eat less of. These books are less stringent than his first and suggest moving toward healthier eating in stages and he lists those stages. It made me realize it's not all or nothing, moving toward healthier eating habits is a good thing.

    One word of warning: When he says to check with your doctor when following his plan, that's good advice. I had been taking a mild blood pressure medication for years and 3 weeks after drinking some smoothies that were in the recipe section of his book each day, my blood pressure went down to a very low level. I had to stop taking the medication and haven't had to go back on it. That alone paid for the price of these books!...more info
  • One Approach to Good Health, But Not the Only
    Of course you can lose weight and regain your health by following Fuhrman's recommendations, but there are other plans that will get you there, too.

    Most people won't follow Fuhrman's plan for very long because it's too burdensome and too expensive to eat as much vegetation as he recommends. And it's not necessary, either. Fuhrman's pseudoscientific formula (health=nutrients/calories) for health sounds great, but it is not really an evidence-based formula. Fuhrman has no proof that to enjoy excellent health you have to cram every calorie with as many phytonutrients as possible, although certainly there is good evidence that you need SOME phytonutrients. But the more the better? Not necessarily. Fruits and veggies are important, but in fact it is unlikely that they are the key to the success of his plan (assuming, as I do, that he is not lying about his clinical experiences).

    The key to the success of Fuhrman's plan is undoubtedly the elimination of junk food, primarily sugar, refined grains and junk oils/fats. This is the also the key to the success of other diets (e.g., low-carb, high fat diets such at Atkins). In other words, a good diet is a diet that ELIMINATES JUNK and includes a few good phytonutrients. You don't have to go low fat or super-high vegetable, you just have to cut out the junk.

    And you don't have to spend a ridiculously high price for Fuhrman's book to tell you how to do it, either.

    I'll tell you right now what to do, for free:

    Cut out the junk food. Cut out sugar, refined grains, fruit juices, vegetable fats other than olive oil, coconut oil & palm oil, and cut out hydrogenated fats. Don't eat chips, fries, or anything from a fast food restaurant. Don't eat soy. Eat one or two servings of fruit a day, especially berries, but no more than that (because of the fructose load). Eat as much fresh meat as you enjoy, but don't eat processed meats. If you eat a lot of fats and oils, cut way back on the carbs. If you eat a lot of carbs (whole grains/beans/veggies), cut way back on your fats. But whatever else you do, eat a handful of nuts every day, a couple squares of dark chocolate and a glass of red wine.

    That'll do ya. You'll lose weight and you'll gain health. Don't worry about saturated fats, eggs, milk and all that crap that the vegans try to guilt-trip you with. Despite what Fuhrman says, animal products ARE full of nutrients, and ARE good for your health. There are various ways of going attaining vibrant health, and Fuhrman's way is ONE way, but not THE way.

    Studies have shown that vegetarians do NOT live longer than omnivores. None of the longest-lived centenarians were vegans, and none of them ate the amounts of vegetable matter that Fuhrman recommends. Studies do show that fruits and vegetables do provide modest health benefits, but there is no study that indicates that huge amounds of fruits & veggies provide you with superior protection. If any food is a superstar, it is the nut. The fatty, delicious nut, full of magnesium, antioxidants and various types of fats. Eat some raw as one of the few sources of unheated protein you're likely to get, but also feel free to eat them roasted and salted.

    So eat for health, but feel free to go easy on the broccoli if you don't like it.

  • Joel Fuhrman Book
    What an eye opener. I know that processed foods are terrible for our health but I didn't realize that we must be careful about how much animal protein we consume. I had spent years feeling guilty because I don't drink enough milk. Now I realize I can get better nutrition elsewhere. The biggest surprise for me is how inadequate our diets are when we follow the FDA food pyramid. I thought that if I could eat according to the FDA food pyramid, I would be in excellent health.

    Don't let the fact that there are two books overwhelm you. The second book is a cookbook that can be kept in your kitchen. Also, Dr Furhman asks the reader to make gradual changes at first. This is not an all or nothing approach. We are reminded that even if we stay in Phase 1 of this plan (there are four phases), we are still far better off than following the Standard American Diet (SAD). ...more info

    This book is attractive and has great information. I like the two book format that includes the information in one book and the menus and recipes in the other. There are some editing problems with the recipes with the wrong recipe directions on some of the recipes. It seems it wasn't successfully proofread in that way.     I am very impressed with these books. I am sure I will refer to them many times in the future since they will be a key resource for me in the future. I also plan to use them in my work as a nutritional and wellness consultant.
