Conservative talk radio's fastest-growing superstar is also a New York Times bestselling phenomenon: the author of the groundbreaking critique of the Supreme Court, Men in Black, and the deeply personal dog lover's memoir Rescuing Sprite, Mark R. Levin now delivers the book that characterizes both his devotion to his more than 5 million listeners and his love of our country and the legacy of our Founding Fathers: Liberty and Tyranny is Mark R. Levin's clarion call to conservative America, a new manifesto for the conservative movement for the 21st century.
In the face of the modern liberal assault on Constitution-based values, an attack that has steadily snowballed since President Roosevelt's New Deal of the 1930s and resulted in a federal government that is a massive, unaccountable conglomerate, the time for re-enforcing the intellectual and practical case for conservatism is now. Conservative beliefs in individual freedoms do in the end stand for liberty for all Americans, while liberal dictates lead to the breakdown of civilized society -- in short, tyranny. Looking back to look to the future, Levin writes "conservatism is the antidote to tyranny precisely because its principles are our founding principles." And in a series of powerful essays, Levin lays out how conservatives can counter the liberal corrosion that has filtered into every timely issue affecting our daily lives, from the economy to health care, global warming, immigration, and more -- and illustrates how change, as seen through the conservative lens, is always prudent, and always an enhancement to individual freedom.
As provocative, well-reasoned, robust, and informed as his on-air commentary, Levin's narrative will galvanize readers to begin a new era in conservative thinking and action. Liberty and Tyranny provides a philosophical, historical, and practical framework for revitalizing the conservative vision and ensuring the preservation of American society.
- A Must Read
One of the best books I have read in some time. Mark Levin has a superb command of the English language, his ideas are clearly presented and relevant to current political events. A must read for the conservative viewpoint that cannot be found in the media, print or television. Also a must read for Progressives, who have difficulty understand the Constitution and the fundamental ideas of our founding fathers....more info
- Refreshing Liberty!
This is war folks, and like it or not, the soft tyranny is here for your life. Christ is hateful, deviancy is normal and all property belongs to the state. Your morals will be used against you. Anything you say, write or think is a crime if the left says it is so. Give no quarter, provide no comfort. Being civil to these creatures is a sign of weakness, and will be exploited. You can make the Christian effort to bring liberty and the Word to the younger ones - many grew up in homes without men, and then went to schools without men - so they lack logic and direct thought. However, do not allow your life, your work or your love to be used to support their evil ways....more info

- Ignore the 1-star ratings on this audio book!
After looking at the ratings, I became confused...it had over 1200 ratings in almost no time....1,000 five-star ratings, and 84 one-star ratings. I decided to take a chance based on the odds that it would be good.
The audio book was fantastic, and well worth the listen. I ended up going on to see what the one-star raters were saying, and I really wish that I had done that to begin with, since it would have stopped me from worrying about the purchase. Predictably, the one-star ratings come from those who had severe doubts on the work before they ever ordered a copy.
This piece is extremely thoughtful, very provocative, and you will enjoy every minute if you are the type of person who agrees with him most of the time. If you are not that type of person, this book will get you worked up, make you angry, and potentially even lead you to write a one-star review on an incredibly good book.
If you are of a conservative, or libertarian, mind this is a must-have for you.
- Must Read BOOK!!
Rush has it right, this book will be read by all people. Why? Mark gives the conservatives answers. Many talking heads on talk shows blare about the left and what they are doing. Mark describes the left and shows how the conservative is different. I thought that I might be moderate, forget it, i know for sure that I stand with Mark in the conservative arena. This is a book that I have referred to and purchased for several of my business customers and they have enjoyed!!! Must READ!!! ...more info

- Valuable Work
I am usually somewhat wary of books discussing a wide range of topics. However Mr. Levin's work, Liberty and Tyranny, became an exception. The reason is Mr. Levin begins by writing about the basics. These basics include the civil society, the acknowledgement of natural rights, the toleration of basic religion, the free market, and property rights. Mr. Levin does not go into a vast amount of depth in these topics. But such is not his purpose. Mr. Levin's purpose is to provide the general public, not only the academics, a basic understanding of these basic institutions for personal and national liberty. And Mr. Levin succeeds quite well. His book is very readable and understandable.
Mr. Levin in his book strongly attacks what he correctly calls the statist. The statist is the modern liberal or leftist who wants to replace free institutions with government regulation and control. Levin rights "the Statist is dissatisfied with the condition of his own existence. He condemns his fellow man, surroundings, and society itself for denying him the fulfillment, success and adulation he believes he deserves. He is angry, resentful, petulant, and jealous. He is incapable of honest self-assessment and rejects the honest assessment by others of himself, thereby evading responsibility for his own miserable condition. The Statist searches for significance and even glory in a utopian fiction of his mind's making..." (p. 15). Mr. Levin description of the statist has much in common with Jamie Glazov's description of the leftist utopian in his book United in Hate: The Left's Romance with Tyranny and Terror.
In his definition of civil society Mr. Levin channels Adam Smith to describe the civil society as a harmony of interests between persons, or "rules of cooperation between people that have developed through generations of human experience and collective reasoning that promote the betterment of the individual and society." The civil society is where each individual is an end in him or herself. Each individual has freedom to discover and pursue his/her legitimate interests and desires as long as he or she respects the rules of the civil society and the rights of others. Mr. Levin thus is in close harmony with Frederick Hayek Individualism and Economic Order.
I do not dot every I and cross every t of Mr. Levin's work. However the presentation of the basic ideas of human liberty and their application to the modern political debate is superb. This book is highly recommended.
As a 10th generation Patriotic Loyal Conservative American I Salute you Mr Levin for 2 great American Books Men in Black and Liberty and Tyranny!
and thanks for the heads up on Oliver North's Book outside of our constitution these three books are the greatest of my book collections.

- Recommended reading for everyone -- including those who were duped into voting for Obama
Once again, Mark delivers a jewel of conservative thought. But more importantly he explains and exposes in a timeless way, what we're experiencing today -- the complete overthrow of our beloved capitalist and democratic way of life, replaced by a statist, leftist socialist soft-tyrany. This is a must read for all, especially those who thought they were voting for real change with Obama. Yes you voted for change, but this is not the change you thought it was. - Wonderful book. Here are a few eccentric observations
This book is as well-written, timely and informative as has been reported elsewhere. I've nearly finished my second reading. Here are a few observations that I think might be interesting. (1) As I rarely miss an hour of Mark's radio show, I found the book contained few major points not presented on the radio. The observation is how well Mark utilizes these different media to make the same points in both places. In general, print is much better suited to statistical and other forms of detailed documentation. Mind, the points he makes are consistent across both media, in fact are identical. For me, this book is a case study in how to make a set of coherent points with full supporting documentation, but without clutter. (This technical tour de force alone was worth the price of the book.) (2) This is a bit embarrassing, but one of the more useful passages was Mark's devastating deconstruction of a 2007 Obama speech (pp. 183-192). Even though I've read "Rules for Radicals" twice and practice my own deconstruction of demagogic oratory, I sadly still find myself slipping under its spell. Mark's exposure of the shabby tricks of this vile trade are a massively useful lesson worth frequent repetition. (3) Mark often says that "conservatism is the only antidote to tyranny." On page 17 he writes what I thought was a close analogue to this in a complex sentence that ends with "... civil society is the sole anecdote." I can't make sense of the sentence with "anecdote," where it seems that "antidote" is the correct word. Still, Mark is very careful with words, and this sentence is complex enough to have been subject to careful scrutiny by Mark's editor, who would have immediately caught an incorrect word. So, even though I can't figure it out, it is likely that I've simply misunderstood. I've shown this section of the book to some English majors I know, and none of them can make any sense of the sentence with "anecdote," and all think the sentence makes perfect sense with "antidote." Yes, this is an incredibly minor point, given the magnitude of the threat to our liberty and the potency of Mark's book against the onrushing tyranny. Even so ... I'd like to know how to make sense of it. Any help?
Great book. Immensely powerful and masterfully constructed.
- Where did our liberties go?
Mark Levin very eloquently and succinctly details where it all went wrong. From the government telling you how much grain you can grow to the housing crisis to the too-powerful and irrational court system, Levin exposes the faults in the system that are simply a result of bastardizing the intent of the Constitution. Neither political party is spared criticism in this book, but the statists on th left are the primary target. He explains how "progressive" politics have no place in the society as intended by the Founding Fathers.
This is absolutely a must-read book. I plan on giving it out to all of my friends and also re-reading it soon. By far the best commentary on the state of politics that I am aware of that was written in modern times. I cannot recommend this book enough. ...more info

- Warning- Facts within book unavoidable, use caution
Facts are inescapable but ignorance is not - Mark Levin proves it once again in "Liberty and Tyranny."
Factually based, eloquently written, and heavily researched, Mark Levin's Liberty and Tyranny shines a penetrating light of truth upon the slithering parasite that is the freedom-devouring Statist. This book will open your eyes to the Statists' otherwise subtle attacks upon individual freedom that, if continued unchecked, will lead to utter and irreversible despotism.
Levin doesn't only highlight the problem but he also provides some answers. The Conservative Manifesto gives a clear and well thought out list of goals that must be adopted in order for us to protect our liberties and to reclaim those which have already been taken from us.
Despite being only 205 pages in length, this is not a quick read. Each sentence contains a wealth of information and no word is wasted. The subject matter can get complicated but Levin has gone out of his way to make this book readable and enjoyable no matter what your background or education level. The citation notes provide a treasure trove of additional sources that beg to be combed over as well.
Although I was required to read roughly 200 textbook pages a night during graduate school, I may have learned more from Liberty and Tyranny than in all of those nights combined. Thus, I gladly would have paid hundreds of dollars for L&T if it was a required college textbook as it should be.
Do not pass up this ridiculously underpriced masterpiece.
Please, buy and read Liberty and Tyranny - while you still have the freedom to!

- America's possible descent into "soft tyranny" explained
"Liberty and Tyranny" by Mark R. Levin is a well thought-out, lucid, and analytical look at America's possible descent into "soft tyranny." Over 150 years ago Alexis de Toqueville warned that the "soft tyranny" of an encroaching government steadily expanding its control over citizens' lives and freedom of decision, was the greatest threat to America's democracy. And here we are. We now have a Federal Government that tells us what kinds of cars we may drive, what kinds of toilets our homes may contain, how much of our money we may keep for our own use, and how much of other people's money the government will "give" to us in return for its control over our lives. Levin rightly labels those on the Left who favor expanded government "Statists," and explains how conservative ideology is opposed to the Statist ideology in a variety of contexts.
Levin demonstrates through concrete examples how the Statist intentionally confuses the citizenry as to the meaning of "freedom" in an American context. The conservative understands "freedom" to mean essentially freedom from unreasonable arbitrary governmental interference. Indeed the Constitution was not intended to grant the people rights, but to prevent the government acting to deprive people of rights. By contrast the Statist, Levin explains, defines "freedom" as the freedom to receive governmental largesse (i.e. government-run health care, social security, etc.) in exchange for accepting more governmental control over the citizenry. Thus the Statists talk about such things as "freedom from financial insecurity" or "freedom from lack of health insurance." While government involvement in such things may (or may not) be desirable, such governmental involvement does not represent "freedom" in the manner that the Founders defined it, and in fact the coercive nature of such involvement (for example, try opting out of the Social Security system) is in fact a lessening of freedom. Levin explains that "[t]his is tyranny's disguise. These are not rights. They are the Statist's false promises...which the Statist uses to justify all trespasses on the individual's private property."
Mr. Levin presents a cogent argument that today Americans "are living in a state of diminishing liberty--that statism is on the ascendancy and the societal balance is tipping away from ordered liberty." When the government seeks to nationalize health care, the auto industry, the oil industry, etc., these are not actions that increase freedom. To the contrary, these actions increase the power of the Statists and the State to control the actions and restrict the freedom of decision of the citizenry--to force individuals to conform their actions to those actions favored by the Statists. Levin observes that "[f]or the Statist, liberty is not a blessing but the enemy." For after all, if people are free, within reasonable bounds, to make their own decisions they may not make the decisions favored by the Statists.
"Liberty and Tyranny" takes particular aim at our overreaching judiciary, which has abrogated for itself the power to decide what the law "should" mean. Levin quotes Justice Thurgood Marshall who said "[y]ou do what you think is right and let the law catch up..." this is plainly a recipe for Statism--where unelected judges decide cases on the basis of what they think the law should be, rather than upon the law as enacted by the people's elected representatives. This is precisely why the Statists assault conservative judicial nominees so viciously--the Judiciary can give the Statists the power to push their agenda without the necessity of winning elections.
Another important chapter in "Liberty and Tyranny" deals with the free market. The free market is shown to be anathema to the Statist, because it is driven by the freely-made decisions of millions, indeed billions, of people. The Statist seeks to ensure that economic decisions are made only in the directions favored by the Statist, small cars, gasohol fuel, etc. One need only review the recent actions of the Federal Government to witness its assault on the free market--or more precisely, its assault upon economic liberty.
My only criticism of "Liberty and Tyranny" is that it paints a depressing picture of America's future. Conservatives by nature mainly wish to be left alone to pursue private goals, while the Statists inherently seek to control public policy--which is why our universities, media, and governments are dominated by Statists. But this piece will serve a valuable function if it educates people as to the true nature of freedom, and how the Statists, easily identified, seek to direct American society into a soft tyranny in which individual actions must conform to the wishes of the Statists.
This book constitutes a solid intellectual achievement. It provides the Conservative with a rigorous framework for the defense of liberty. It provides rigor to what most of us understand but often are unable to articulate. When a Statist calls for universal (meaning Governmental) health care, higher taxes "for the public good" and other nice-sounding things, the Conservative often viscerally knows that these things in fact represent a constriction of individual liberty. But too often when conservatives come out against such things they are made to sound churlish. After all, who is opposed to everyone having adequate health care? Levin's book articulates why this is so, and by doing so may help the conservative movement more properly articulate its pro-liberty agenda. Which is an agenda that a solid majority of Americans will support if it is properly presented to them.
- For all those who value liberty and the American way of life
Finally a conservative body of work that really focuses on why America is the greatest country on earth and the current assult our liberty and our way of life are under from the left. There is more than taxes to fear!!!
I know what happens when socialist take over. Poor healthcare, more taxes, increased unemployment, and a shrinking middle class. I spent many years in Canada and watched what happened with the Government's assult on the middle class in the name of "Elite Socialism".

- Put up of shut up
This book although brief is filled with many useful facts and explores the spectrum of political issues. Notably absent are The Federal Reserve, Gun control, The corrections system, etc. However, these issues are mentioned in passing and Mark carefully picked appropriate topics to discuss. This book is the truth, not opinion, not cherry picked facts that ignore others to prove his point, it is simply the truth stated. The reader is left to form their own opinions after gaining knowledge about the "statist" and learning old facts that have been kept out of the public mind for decades. This book is not expert level and does not specifically delve into one topic, it contrasts Conservative principles against those of "statism" using current events. Furthermore, the book spells out its message in ~200 pages and is a great primer for anyone aged 7-adult. I've seen children in elementary school reading this and the words and ideas are easy to get across e.g. by not allowing dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane(DDT) to be used 10 of millions die in third wold countries. Mark is not a scientist, but presents current issues of climate change in a coherent, scientifically valid manner.
So the title of my review, "Put up of shut up". No one else on the so called right has came out to contrast the statist. Mark and a handful of other in the media are the only opposition to the statist. I face all of you "drones" daily and you are mindless and fail to realize that the view of the left are based off lies and a false compassion for your fellow man. Mark Levin's book states the facts and has caused a bit of a stir in the political world. The last thing the "statist" wants is educated people that gain knowledge from facts. So where is the answer from the left? When will Mark Levin stop being ignored? People pretend this book and the issues presented in the book do not exist, but that will soon change. The Left has not provided any facts to refute those presented in this book, just a few drones that spew their worthless opinions, "his writing style was subpar...these are not facts (even though their are references)...this book was not compassionate..."
I would love to see a liberal manifesto and their values. Oh wait, there is at least one Rep. Wexler's "Fire-Breathing Liberal" a book about a congressman putting up this illusion of fighting for the little guy (his constituents), but are there any facts? No not really, just his worthless opinion and some made up statistics that make it seem like people are hurting and can't do anything without the government.
All who have read Mark Levin's Liberty and Tyranny, including myself would be anxious to hear a rebuttal from the left. This book is fact that cannot be debated without using standard liberal tricks that take people away from facts by playing on their feelings. ...more info

- It should become a textbook...
This should become a textbook for high school civics classes. But since the Statists control the educational system, that's not likely to happen. So, instead, our children must be taught at home and through alternative media about these things and about accurate history. Every teenager should have their own copy in which to make notes. This may be the most important document since the constitution! AND, if you listen to Mark's radio show and don't like him, grit your teeth and listen anyway. Truth sometimes hurts, but if you listen long enough you will begin to see the truth. Mark hammers it like an anvil... it will make your ears ring!...more info

- A Great One!!! --- From The Great One!!!
They call Mark "The Great One!" For those who may not know why, the reasons appear line by line in this book.
In a difficult time in its history, America once found a renewed hope and strength in a caped icon who they called "Superman!" In and with him, the common man didn't feel so small and helpless anymore (see www.supermanhomepage.com/comics/comics.php?topic=articles/josh-grayson1). This description ends by saying "Thank you Superman for the wonderful adventures, important lessons, and for---`The never ending battle for truth, justice, and the American way.'"
In like manner, we can thank Mark Levin. He is carrying the torch, in the form of our flag. He is helping Americans and showing us as citizens how to find this renewed hope and strength.
This is necessary reading for anyone who claims to be like-minded or to support the same values as our Founding Fathers. Mark may not be "faster than a speeding bullet." However, the way this book is going, he may prove to be "more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound," although the buildings need not be any taller than those on our nation's Capitol Hill.
Not familiar with him? Read this book and find out why they call him "The Great One!" You'll grasp what our country is experiencing---maybe not essentially very different but more pronounced than 1938 when the "caped" hero was introduced in comic book form. Experience the love this author has for the United States, its founding principles and our God-given inalienable rights. Experience why we need heroes like Mark who will step up and engage themselves in "the never ending battle for truth, justice, and the American way." Then, join in with him.
Thank you Mark! May God bless you for what you do and your continued efforts in what you do!

- An impressive tome -- what's new is really, well, old
As a man who came of age during the golden era of Ronald Reagan, I've been increasingly dismayed at the erosion of what I came to know as conservative. I found Mark on the radio about a year ago and was recently thrilled to pick up Liberty and Tyranny. Mark accurately describes the book as not being about "I or We", but rather the facts and underpinnings of conservatism from our founding to our very troubled times today. As a conservative blogger, I've yet to find a more thorough resource upon which to build my framework of positions.
Whether your left or right -- but especially if you're an independent, you must read this book.

- Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto
I have bought 5 copies of this book so far, one for me and one for each of 4 family members. It is a great read and a must read for anyone that is unsure of what being a conservative is all about. Logical and well written, the book conveys the essence of conservative principles in a way that any thinking person can understand. I consider it a great reference tool that can be used to disassemble and counter the typical chest beating, screaming and out and out lies perpetrated by the radical left in moving their sorry agenda.
When I got to page 18, I knew this was the real deal... He fully described a person that I know and work with right down to the very words and phrases used to defend the liberal mantra that is spewed forth on a daily basis... This book is well thought out and researched with an extensive reference and is factual... Dr. Mark Levin tells it like it is!
If you are a conservative this is the ultimate reference tool. If you are a liberal, you might find that you have more in common with conservative principles than you think - read Liberty and Tyranny and find out for yourself.

- Warning ! : Material may not be suitable for "back-benchers"
Full disclosure : I am a huge fan of "The Great One". His radio talk show is the only one that I look forward to every day. But, I am not a mindless follower.
Why should you read this book ? Forget the painstaking research that the author undertook. Forget that fact the he is THE constitutional authority on radio & television. Forget the fact that it obvious that the author believes in everything he preaches, with the sincerity plain for all. Forget the fact that this guy has walked the walk, and talked the talk. He was IN the Reagan administration. Forget all that.
Why should you read this book ? Mark takes you on a tour of "the shining city on the hill" The city isn't shining as brightly as it used to. Mark takes you to the best parts of town and the worst. He shows you how unique and beautiful the city was, and still is. Then after the tour is over, and you start feeling sad...you start thinking, I wish I could have seen America in its prime...after that...Mark smiles and pulls the key to the city out of his pocket. He gives you the tools you need to rebuild it to greatness again.
This book is not for back-benchers, psuedo-intellectuals, copy-cats, talking-heads, or anyone else that is only interested in one-liners. Mark's got plenty of those on his show. This is cerebral, deep and very very timely.

- A Must Read For Every American
Liberty & Tyranny
I bought two copies. My wife wanted one for her birthday. Mark Levin clearly and with factual authority lays out the case for conservatism over
large government usurpation of citizen's rights and opportunities.
You will be shocked at the expose like the Federal governments collection of taxes on oil that exceeds all the profits of oil companies combined while they cast the oil companies as the bad guys.
You will also come to understand the damage done to America by "statists" like FDR's New Deal, Johnson's Great Society and other great government screw ups like the current mortgage crisis.
You will also see how the banning of DDT that eradicated malaria in much of the Western world was done without scientific evidence. It saved tens of millions of lives and yet today millions of Africans die of malaria because of the ban.
How man made global warming was conveniently changed to man made climate change as evidence that the earth actually cooled in the last decade.
It is an expose not to be missed. Levin also points out why America became the country that it did and why citizens should be alarmed at the massive taxes coming that will cripple future generations and derail the American growth miracle.
I also bought the audio book and listened to it on our historical Virginia tour, Appomatox, Montecello, Mt Vernon.

I hope it wakes up some dolts.
- Was this book ghost-written?
I really wonder if this book (or manifesto, if you prefer), was actually written by Levin, or if it was ghost-written. What I do know is that when he quotes his book on the air he sounds perfectly reasonable, and that the principles and arguments in the book are fairly to quite sound. On the other hand, when he actually tries to apply the principles he just quoted, Levin's lack of knowledge is blatantly obvious.
For instance, at one point he argues that the Constitution is the law of the land, and that nobody is above the law, and that all citizens accused of crimes should have a fair hearing to determine their innocence or guilt. Fair enough, I think we can all agree with that. But then, not even a week before on his program he viciously attacked the liberal left for attempting to hold the Bush administration accountable for the crime of torture (which, btw, is illegal both under U.S. and international law). Time after time he displays this type of lack of understanding of what he is reading when he quotes his own book.
So, 3 stars because much of the material in the book is quite good and reasonable. Unfortunately, I'm not convinced that Levin actually wrote it....more info
