Book Description
Five years ago, with the publication of The South Beach Diet, renowned Miami cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston set out to change the way America eats. Now he has an even more ambitious goal: to change the way America lives by helping Americans become fitter as well as thinner and healthier?for life. In the all-new The South Beach Diet Supercharged, Dr. Agatston shows you how to rev up your metabolism and lose weight faster while following the proven healthy eating principles of the original diet: choose good carbs, good fats, lean protein, and low-fat dairy. Collaborating with Dr. Joseph Signorile, a professor of exercise physiology at the University of Miami, Dr. Agatston presents a cutting-edge, three-phase workout that perfectly complements the three phases of the diet itself. Based on the latest exercise science, this ease-into-it fitness program combines low- and high-intensity interval exercise (with a focus on walking) and functional core body-toning exercises. The result: you'll look fitter and you'll burn more fat and calories all day--even at rest. Also included is the latest nutritional research on how specific foods high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and a host of phytonutrients help keep you healthy; new and expanded lists of Foods to Enjoy; taste-tempting Meal Plans for phases 1 and 2; and dozens of easy-to-prepare new recipes, including Eggs Frijoles, Chock-Full-of-Veggies Chili, Roasted Tomato Soup, Homestyle Turkey Meatloaf, and South Beach Diet Tiramisu. In every chapter you'll find inspiring success stories from real-life South Beach dieters and plenty of effective weight loss tips. And as an added bonus, Dr. Agatston answers the questions you've most often asked him about the diet since the original book was published.

Dr. Agatston Answers Frequently Asked Questions about South Beach Dieting

I'm doing so well on Phase 1. Why can't I stay on it indefinitely?

There are two types of people on the South Beach Diet: those who cannot wait to start Phase 2 and those who never want to see Phase 1 end.

Why are some people so enamored with Phase 1? The reason is that it's simple and to the point. You don't have to do a lot of thinking about food choices. You're basically eating lean protein, high-fiber legumes, low-fat dairy, good fats (including some nuts), and plenty of vegetables. Those highly processed refined carbs that were your downfall are out of sight and, within a few days, out of mind (at least for most people). You're encouraged to eat until you're full and snack before you get hungry. And every time you step on the scale, you get a big grin on your face because those unwanted pounds and fat are just melting away. So it's not surprising to me that Phase 1 fans often ask, "If I'm doing so well on Phase 1, why do I have to move on to Phase 2?" Phase 1 is not meant to be a long-term eating plan. Its dual goals are to jump-start weight loss for people who have 10 or more pounds to lose (thus providing immediate positive reinforcement) and to control swings in blood sugar and eliminate cravings for sugar and refined starches. Phase 1 can also have a positive effect on sugar in people with pre-diabetes. In just 2 weeks, you should have achieved these two goals and be ready to move on.

Once your sugar and cravings are under control, there's a key reason to go on to Phase 2: we don't want you to miss out on the myriad vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that come from reintroducing whole fruits and whole grains to your diet, not to mention the added fiber. These foods contain thousands of phytochemicals that protect your body against a host of diseases, including heart disease and cancer. If you were to continue indefinitely on Phase 1 and deny yourself these foods, you would not be learning how to make good food choices in the real world. More importantly, you'd be missing out on some of the best medicine nature has to offer.

In addition, if you were to continue with the smaller palette of foods recommended on Phase 1, your diet would get dull over the long haul. And once you're bored, you're much more likely to revert to your old eating habits. For the diet to truly become a lifestyle--one that allows you to sustain weight loss and garner all the related health benefits--there has to be variety and satisfaction in your eating plan. That's another reason why we move you on to Phase 2 so quickly.

Remember, it may take you longer to lose weight by following the three phases of our diet. But the chances of keeping that weight off are far better.

Can I still eat as much protein now that I'm eating more carbohydrates on Phase 2?

As you know, on the South Beach Diet, we don't expect you to count grams of protein or weigh your food on any phase. Now that you're gradually adding satisfying high-fiber whole grains and fruits to your diet on Phase 2, you'll naturally be less hungry, and the amount of lean protein you require to feel full will no doubt be less than you were eating on Phase 1. That said, I encourage you to eat some protein--fish or shellfish, lean beef or pork, white meat chicken or turkey, or soy protein, for example--along with these good carbs at most meals.

Protein helps slow down the digestion of carbohydrates, which means that your body will make less insulin, your sugar swings will be reduced, and you won't crave more food in between meals. I also urge you to eat slowly, savor your food, and really enjoy the variety of foods you'll introduce on Phase 2. If you do this, your focus will no longer be on how much protein you can have because you'll never be hungry. Another tip: Once you're satisfied, push your chair away from the table. It's fine to leave some food on your plate at the end of a meal.

Can I really eat anything I want on Phase 3?

If you're talking about dessert as an occasional treat, of course. On Phase 3, we don't regulate what you can eat. Yes, you can finally have that small bowl of ice cream or a small piece of chocolate cake or the white bagel that you couldn't have before. But you shouldn't do it too often, and you should continue to watch amounts on desserts. Phase 3 isn't about abandoning the good principles of the diet and suddenly resuming your old eating habits. It's about continuing to make smart, healthy food choices--for life. If you follow the principles of the diet most of the time, we expect you to enjoy anything you want now and then.

  • It's great and it's doing what I purchased it for...
I had done the South Beach diet in 2006. Of course, gained some back, so I wanted the new Supercharged book to begin again. It's working. In the phase 1 timeframe I lost 11 pounds. This is my first week past that initial time and it's much slower, but if I can lose 2 pounds a week...I don't get discouraged.

    Thanks,

  • Easy to follow
I have always tried to lose weight using the Hilton Head Metabolism Diet. While it works, I was always left feeling very hungry. The South Beach Diet was recommended to me by several friends. I have 40 pounds to lose after giving birth to twins. The first week of this diet was hard because I was more addicted to sugar than I realized. I felt sluggish and had dark circles under my eyes. After the first week, I felt outstanding. I have more energy and have not felt the need to "cheat" once. I'm not a fish eater but I still find this easy to follow. My favorite recipe is the Turkey Meatloaf. I'm starting the 4th week and have lost 10+ pounds (in all the right places). This book has taught me how to eat better....more info

Five years ago, I started out with the original South Beach book. This book is great! It offers so many more choices, and is much more flexible. • Good for quick weight loss, not easy to stay with long term, better options out there
I lost 30+ pounds a year ago easily on the weight watchers points system. I gained it back over the course of a year because I am an emotional/stress eater and the 2008 election had me knots! I turned to this book to help get the weight off again because everyone said it was fast. I have a couple of problems with the diet plan that made it impossible for me to follow it:

    - I am against artificial sweetners. I'd rather have a touch of real sugar than nasty, fake, unhealthy sweetner. Ricotta cheese desserts got old really fast, even with the sweetner.
    - I cannot tolerate whole grains due to food allergies or something (I get extremely gassy and get horrible migraines). I can handle the processed stuff fine.
    - Same thing with beans, even with plenty-o bean-o. I just can't digest it.
    - This diet is overly restrictive, it was just too hard for me to stick to it more than a couple weeks.
    - I plateaued really fast with this diet. I never plateaued with weight watchers points (without reducing my points even).
    - I'm a nursing mom, I couldn't find anything in the book about following this diet while nursing.
    - I don't think he's correct in the assertion that sugar or refined grains cause cravings. If you get enough protein at your meals you won't have cravings, no matter what else you eat (in moderation, that's why I like WW points, it's all about portion and moderation).
    - It was too expensive to cook separate meals for myself, since my husband and kids (both on Gluten-free Casein-free) wouldn't touch the recipes out of this book.

I started reading another book, "Beck Diet for Life" (Judith Beck) The Complete Beck Diet for Life: The Five-Stage Program for Permanent Weight Loss and have bought my last dieting book. "Beck Diet for Life" actually tackles the _behavioral issues_ of chronic overeating and that was more helpful to me, since I know how to eat healthy already. I'm now back to doing weight watcher's points and am following the behavioral tools I got out of "Beck Diet for Life" and the weight is already melting off.

If you're comfortable with eating all those gassy miserable beans and whole grains and don't care if you never get to eat sugar again, then this diet book is the one for you. I'm sure South Beach Diet is great for your heart, but so are other diets rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and grains. If you need a more balanced real-life diet plan that accomodates special food issues (food allergies, celiac) or picky eaters, check out "Beck Diet for Life" or just try the WW points system. ...more info

  • Wizard of South Beach scores big again!
The new book combines the power of the original South Beach Diet and its carb-restrictive recipes with the added component of exercise which helps pump up the metabolic rate. As a cooking site owner I am always looking for new, healthier alternatives to those 'less than totally healthy' recipes that we love so much. Kudos to Dr. Agatston for another fine book in the series....more info
  • diets can be tasty
I was surprised at how flavorful the recipes were for Phase I. While I do miss starchy foods from time to time, the diet allows you to eat and snack quite a bit and encourages you to do so until you're full - and the food I'm eating now is healthier, so I don't feel guilty about it. ...more info
  • Previous South Beach Diet User
I like the way Dr Agatston explains the theory behind his eating plan and how you can look for progress not only in the mirror but on a internal level (i.e. lab values and other medical test). I disagree with the critics of the first book that said it lacked emphasis on exercise. I prefer a plan that targets one aspect of health.

Being a cardiologist Dr Agatston is well aware of the importance of exercise to combat disease. However his strong suit is diet, and I think that is where he should stay. Let the fitness experts handle the exercise aspects of a healthy life style.

Most Americans realize diet alone does not constitute total healthier living. By now we should all realize that it is multi step process. When proposing changes in life style it is sometimes easier to incorporate one significant change at a time. That way you avoid feeling over whelmed and being more prone to give up. Starting slow and being consistent is key to any long lasting significant life style changes. For those of you that can multitask very well I suggest you contact a fitness trainer or other fitness resources in addition to this healthy eating plan.

Dr. Agatston has helped me understand the role of carbohydrates in my life and inspired me to look at the glycemic index of carbs to help me make better choices.

I do not love to cook so some of the receipts are lost on me. But there is an abundance of them for those of you that have a passion for cuisine. I also think the receipts are very expensive to prepare. I don't want to break the bank to eat healthy. However, because the "rules" and supporting concepts are explained so well I was able to compile my own menus that are more budget friendly and palatable to me. That is why I gave the book 4 instead of 5 stars.

And true to his word the diet is simple, no points counting, no carb gram counting, just understanding how foods are processed helps me make better. And when if fall off the wagon, it is easy to get back on track. This diet takes into account people are human, and makes allowances for that. And the belly fat is the first to go!...more info
  • It's not a diet -- It's a lifestyle change
My sister recommended this book after she lost over 30 pounds. I thought that this was a bunch of fluff based upon the yuppy name. I was wrong -- this book teaches you to eat healthy as oposed to starving you like most other diets. There's a lot of good information in this book especially concerning extensive sections on "foods to include" and "foods to avoid". I didn't like too many of the recipes but I use the ingredients to make foods I like. One thing I learned is not to skimp on the spices. You don't have to eat bland food just because you're dieting....more info

  • Super Charged and Motivated
Two years ago I jumped on the South Beach Band Wagon and pretty painlessly lost 35 pounds. I felt better and looked younger than I had in years. Then, slowly and insiduously, I fell off the wagon. I avoided the scale and tried to ignore the fact that my new wardrobe was becoming a bit, well, snug. Finally I broke down and stood on the scale. It was a "Come to Jesus" moment. I was shocked to realize that I'd regained 15 pounds.

As luck would have it, the new and updated South Beach Diet Supercharged book had just been released, so I purchased a copy to refresh my memory on the philosophy and mechanics of the diet.

Good carbs, good fats. It's simple, really. Dr. Agatston explains his recommendations and provides solid data to back up his theories. I was pleased to see that the updated version also included some fascinating information on what type of exercise is most beneficial, and why. Sprinkled throughout the volume are personal success stories for some extra encouragement. I must say that the book left me feeling motivated and ready to get back on track with an eating and exercise plan that truly make sense to me.

This book is highly recommended if you're serious about making positive changes--and not just for the sake of your appearance. The South Beach Diet Supercharged gives basic ground rules for embracing a much healthier life style....more info

I decided to give the South Beach Diet a try. I just completed Phase I and have lost 11 pounds in 14 days! As a woman with PCOS, I have never lost weight this easily. I am also a vegetarian and I like the fact that this diet is easily adapted for vegetarians. I feel great and am not hungry on this plan. I only wish I had read this book a long time ago....more info

It contains a wealth of information, well organized into sections that are easy to reference. Dr. Agatston includes lists of approved foods and those to avoid (the approved list is much longer than the avoidance list!), tasty recipes (my family enjoys them!), daily meal plans, exercise recommendations with photos--and all with interesting explanations for the three diet phases. I have the original South Beach Diet book, and I believe I have all the cookbooks. So, of course, I needed to add Supercharged. I like the South Beach books. As with the original one, this book is fairly easy reading. What he says makes sense. There is a bit more info in this one then I need to know and I do find myself skimming over some parts. • VERY SUCCESSFUL for my very stubborn husband!
THIS WORKED! My husband did it and lost a lot of weight (about 25 pounds, I think). The thing that impressed me is that he was able to EAT while he was on the diet. My husband LOVES FOOD. Seriously. He loves to think about food, he loves to make food, he loves to look at food and he loves to EAT. If he can do this diet and STILL ENJOY FOOD (which he did), then anyone can.

Only problem: when he doesn't stick to it, he gains weight back very quickly. It needs to be a lifestyle choice and not something that you do for just one month....more info

  • A Comprehensive Plan for Diet, Exercise, and Healthful Living
Instead of repeating other reviewers, let's focus mostly on seldom-discussed details of this book.

The South Beach diet centers on natural foods. Agatson contends that portion size usually takes care of itself when natural foods are eaten. He opposes the taking of supplements with the exception of fish oils (p. 314), because he doesn't believe that supplements can adequately replace the nutritive content of natural foods. Fish oil is effective at reducing the inflammatory response that is part of the metabolic syndrome. (p. 81)

Agatson traces the obesity epidemic in the western world. He points to the overconsumption of refined carbohydrates and other foods with a high glycemic impact, and the increase in sedentary living. In fact, he shows that NEAT (nonexercise activity thermogenesis) has declined not only since the Industrial Revolution, but even at much more recent times, owing to such inventions as the e-mail. (p. 57) Even subtle declines in everyday activity levels add up, over time, to increased fat accumulation.

He points to the irony of the fact that American children are overfed but undernourished. This causes a host of problems beyond the most obvious ones. For example, the attention span of children in schools has declined in recent years. (p. 87) As an experienced educator, I fully agree.

Belly fat is the most dangerous, as it contributes to the inflammatory process that leads to cardiovascular disease, strokes, etc. Agatson shows how crude weight measurements and the BMI have been superseded by measurements of the waist-to-hip ratio. It should not exceed 0.8 in women and 0.95 in men. (p. 64)

Agatson prescribes many different kinds of exercise. He also stresses interval training, pointing out the fact that this facilitates fat-burning. Also, more intense exercise gives a longer afterburn, which is the time that fat burning is still occurring at above-resting rates after the exercise session has been finished.

There are numerous menu ideas presented in this book. There is also a helpful table of food substitutions (p. 242) for use in the Phase 1 of the South Beach diet. For instance, mashed potatoes can be replaced by mashed cauliflower or pureed navy beans, and potato chips can be replaced by baked zucchini chips.

This book concludes with a list of references, to articles in medical journals, which the research-oriented reader can use for further study.

I had purchased the original SBD book awhile ago but when I read this had been updated I was intrigued. I especially like the excercises and clear explainations of the interval training as well as the new recipes. This is an excellent book for either someone not familiar with the diet or someone who has the old book and wants the updated version. Worth the money....more info

  • Good Diet
I checked this book out at the library and have been on the diet for 2 weeks. So far on Phase 1 I have lost about 6 pounds. I love sweets and cutting out sugar has not been that difficult. When I get a craving, I make a shake with fat free milk, cocoa and some truvia, vanilla, or coffee. I have done low carb before and lost some weight, but eventually put it back on. I am curious to see how phase 2 goes after I start eating healthy carbs again. The book is good because it gives a list of foods to eat and some good recipes that you can follow. Everything I made has actually tasted very good! Some recipes are time consuming, but worth a shot. I have 2 small boys, so I try to cook when my husband is home to watch the kids, or during nap time. I havent followed the workout too much, I gave it a try, but it didn't seem intense enough. I use my mini trampoline for 30 minutes a day, walk and or ride bikes. On occassion I will do pilates, which helps me stetch my spine. Overall, I would check it out at the library first, then decide if you want to buy the book. It is pretty simple, stay away from white carbs and sugar....more info
  • a little more information
The new addition to the South Beach diet books is pretty much a repeat of the first book. The only real difference is that there are step by step exercises outlined. If you already have the first book and have a handle on your exercise, then don't bother. I thought that there would at least be some new recipes but all of the recipes in this book are in the other South Beach Diet books. ...more info

  • SOUTH BEACH
I ORDERED THIS BOOK AND THE EXERCISE DVD THAT GOES WITH IT BECAUSE I HAD THE OLDER BOOK AND WANTED AN UPDATED VERSION AND THE ADDED EXERCISE DVD. I HONESTLY ONLY SKIMMED THROUGH IT BUT IT SEEMS JUST AS GOOD AS THE OLDER BOOK WITH SOME MORE RECIPES AND THE EXERCISE DVD SEEMS VERY EASY TO FOLLOW....more info

  • More exercise than diet
I have all the other South Beach Diet books and enjoy them primarily for the recipes, rules and guidelines for the various phases in the diet. I found this book to contain some really clear, expanded guidelines (e.g. foods to enjoy in Phase I, foods to add in Phase II) which would be helpful for those new to the diet and those who have been on it for awhile. However, the book contains fewer new recipes than I had hoped, and instead contains much new information on exercise regimens that can be tied to the phases of the diet. While I know this is important, and while I may yet spend time to read about and incorporate the exercise into my lifestyle, it's not really what I wanted when I bought the book....more info
