Product Description

Amazon.com Review: Don't be fooled by the word Tournament in the game title, though--Unreal Tournament has nothing to do with old-style chivalrous combat. Ambushing your enemies, ganging up on them, and blasting them to bits from behind is all part of the milieu, and if that's not enough, you can taunt your victims as you blow them away. The bots in the solo player mode have a wide range of nasty, misogynist taunts, even if your character happens to be female. These can be shut off in the options menu, but with the language and the gore this game really lives up to its Mature rating. It may appeal less to women or players looking for sportsmanlike diversion. --Alyx Dellamonica Amazon.com Product Description: In this follow-up to the bestselling Unreal, you and your team of Bots are fighting in a tournament to attain the crown of Unreal Grand Master. The teams you'll be playing against consist of the most ruthless scum the galaxy has to offer. You'll have to be cool under fire and keep your team working effectively if you hope to beat each of Unreal Tournament's 32 levels and come out the champion (or alive, for that matter). Unreal Tournament's got it all: a ton of amazing levels, exciting new weapons, brain-melting new modes of play (Capture the Flag, Assault Match, Domination Match, Last Man Standing, and--of course--Deathmatch!), unbelievably deadly Bots (computer controlled opponents or teammates), and a slew of other features that should have your happiness glands working overtime.

First-person combat has never been bloodier or faster paced than in Unreal Tournament, a game that pits you against computer-generated bots or online opponents in a kill-or-be-killed free-for-all. With weapons upgraded from its predecessor, this game offers scores of options for play. Games range from the simple Deathmatch to team options such as Capture the Flag. As the player, you can go it on your own against the toughest the galaxy has to offer or direct a group of hard cases against a similarly well armed foe. During play you can be fragged (killed) several times, respawning to take up the fight again--though without the rocket launcher or other guns you have carefully stockpiled.

Unreal Tournament has some amazing features, most particularly the tournament maps, which are complex, varied, and interesting. Initially a seemingly indecipherable maze loaded with weapons and health boosters, the geography of these spaces begins to make sense as you run from shootout to shootout. After getting fragged a couple of times, smart players will find themselves using these environments to their fullest advantage. Ducking down narrow chutes, for example, to leap out on unsuspecting enemies is very satisfying. The playing fields offer hazards of their own, of course--the danger of falling into toxic slime or hard vacuum is always present. Another nice aspect of the game is that online play runs with very little lag, allowing an intense multiplayer experience.

Don't be fooled by the word Tournament in the game title, though--Unreal Tournament has nothing to do with old-style chivalrous combat. Ambushing your enemies, ganging up on them, and blasting them to bits from behind is all part of the milieu, and if that's not enough, you can taunt your victims as you blow them away. • Only 5 stars to FPS(First Person Shooters) Lovers
First, I played the Teen version of this game(which is less violentive). The game is fun and well made. But if you keep playing it, if you're not a FPS lover you'll soon be tired of this game. The awesome weapons and unique arena drags anyone who likes fighting games. But the game play might be boring. Usally you do in this game is like this:

You run around the arena, pick up weapons, and run around some more, crash into a enemy, fire weapons, totally blow them up, then you get blown up by other players and AI's and repeat this things for half an hour. This is what made me stopping playing this game. So this game is like 1~2 stars to people who's not very good at FPS. BUT if your game genre is really a FPS game least try the demo version.
This is an awesome game to FPS lovers. (by the way this version of the game is rated `M' so it's very cruel)...more info

  • UT, best fun on the internet
This game has the best variety in game play vs. all the other first person shooters. It is probably the most fun to play over the internet, especially capture the flag. The maps and graphics are outstanding and the weapons variety has no equal compared to any unmodified first person shooter. I must say that Quake 3 is a dissapointment when compared to Unreal Tournament, however, the game play is faster in Q3, but UT is far more fun....more info
  • Best game I have ever played on any system.
Over the years I must have played hundreds of games, but this one really stands out.I bought it a couple of years ago now and me and my friends still play it online two or three times a week. It's just fantastic. I own Quake 3 Arena ( Unreal's main rival )too but hardly ever play it.Quake 3 is a very good game, but UT blows it out of the water ! The only criticisms I have are that the game seems to crash when your playing online sometimes ( it's not just on my machine, it happens on my friends too ), also to get the best out of the game you really need a high speed internet connection.I have now and it's great, but I remember playing the game when I only had a 56k modem and it really affects the gameplay a lot ( if you're using a slow connection you're at a huge disadvantage when playing people on high speed connections ) , this is not really a fault of the game, more a fault of the net....more info
  • Very Good Game..
I own Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament.. I like both.. But Unreal is about 10 times better. The single player in UT is actually fun to play. The Multiplayer is FANTASTIC...advised you have a fast connection. The graphics are great and it even runs on older machines. Tons of weapons.... Great game modes.... The bots are very smart and fun to play with. This game is WAY more team oriented than Q3 and actaully involves STRATEGY. Fantastic game..one of my very favorite games....GO BUY IT!...more info
  • Is UT worth it???
Here we go again, same old game, same old graphics, just another FPS, right? Well, you got the FPS part down, but it's so much more than that. You've got incredible bot AI, customizable down to the last detail, excellent graphics, nice sound and intriguing levels to play on. Throw the ability to play on the net into the mix and you've got Unreal Tournament. Quake 3's boring, gothic levels and gameplay can't even compare to what UT has to offer. Many modes of play ranging from good ol' Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, plus new game modes like Domination and Assault, you really can't lose. Not to worry, there are plenty of weapons to keep you glued to your seat while fragging the living daylights out of your opponent. Best of all, you don't need a top-of-the-line system to play UT and a 56k modem is sufficient (expect a little lag) to play this baby online. So, stop reading this and pick up your own copy. Trust me, you'll have a blast playing this one! LONG LIVE UNREAL TOURNAMENT!!!...more info
  • CD-ROM but NOT DVD compatible
Although UT is, by far, a fantastic game to play (esp. internet play), one has to keep in mind that the installation disk will only work properly with a bona fide 'CD-ROM' and not a 'DVD-ROM' player (I thought DVD were CD-ROM, but better_ I was wrong) So beware those of you who have a DVD, installation will not work properly (crash, hang etc...) I hear it's a similar story with 'CD-R' drives..... ( I tried, and failed again)...more info
  • Let's get to the point....
Okay, if you're reading this you must be considering to buy this game. I'm not going to go into all this technical stuff cause everyone has pretty much covered it. For the price right now, it's really cheap and worth it. If you're a fan of shooters, get this game. It's up there with Counter-strike and they are both good games in a different way. Even if you don't play online or have a slow connection, the bots are amazingly realistic and fun. Even playing the solo tournaments are fun cause they give you different challenges. I highly recommend this game and it's money well spent!...more info

  • An unforgettable classic
Unreal Tournament. The first, the best, the unforgettable.
This game started the franchise and even now, after 5 years, it still retains it's original flavor.
Great fun, great action, innovative gameplay.
Even if you own newer titles I would still purchase this one, simply for the experience....more info
  • One of the top 5 PC games ever made
I would definitely suggest you pick up a copy of UT if you haven't already. UT has excellent game play, brilliant mods and maps and ASSULT mode of game play! It also has all the bells and whistles which UT 2003 was inexplicaby released without. You can't fail to be impressed with this game....more info
  • One of the best FPS
As a fan of any type of video game, I was told by a friend that this was a good game. So i picked it up, and I was not dissappointed. Yes its true its sensless killing buts thats only deathmatch there are 3 different type of game play. deathmatch(sensless but fun killing) domination(checkpoint) and Capture the flag(the flag the flag!). Unreal tournament has no campaign style playing the single player is multiplayer with bots instead of people. This game is very addictive and with an array of weapons and levels one of the best FPS's out there....more info
  • So much fun!
Unreal Tournament is an exciting and fluent first-person shooter that exemplifies technical excellence in any game of its nature. Unlike Quake III, the action is not limited to a single deathmatch; rather, it has five different types of gameplay styles that make Unreal Tournament a much more entertaining and compelling experience. Unreal Tournament is a satisfying game that is compelling and tense, resulting in a game worthy of high praise.

Unreal Tournament has no need for a story. It's no-fuss interface allows the game-player to immediately launch themselves into the 'Unreal Tournament'- a futuristic fight-to-the-death. Initially you are only able to play deathmatch, but as more scenarios are completed, four other game formats are introduced. There's 'capture the flag', in which you lead a team of fighters in an attempt to capture the opposing team's flag, all while defending your own. Following that, there's 'domination', a somewhat boring format that has your team controlling as many 'point scorers' as possible in order to amass your growing total to a winning score. The most exciting format is 'assault', whereby your team infiltrates either a submarine or a moving train, or whatever, in order to satisfy a number of mission objectives, all under a given time period. Following that, you graduate on to a really hard version of death-match that provides most of Unreal Tournament's frustration.

Technically, Unreal Tournament is flawless. It's seamless graphics engine culminates with a fluent, easily maneuverable first-person perspective, allowing the player to navigate through the catacombs of each scenario with relative ease. Also, the sound quality is very good, especially with Creative Environmental Audio: you can hear missiles travelling from one speaker to the next, sniper bullets whizzing past your ear or the footsteps of an enemy coming closer.

The weapons in Unreal Tournament are varied and numerous. Unlike Quake III, each weapon features an 'alternative fire' option, such as multiple rockets fired simultaneously or a concentrated ball of shotgun fire, rather than the regular spread-shot. Weapon such as the sniper rifle or the 'Ripper', a gun that fires razorblades at high speeds, creates a unique experience that leaves Quake III for dead.

Altogether Unreal Tournament is a really exciting game that is multi-faceted and technically flawless. Its breadth, ease of use and nail-biting excitement culminates to create the most entertaining 3D shooter on the market. Forget Quake III- get Unreal Tournament. It's a winner!...more info

  • I Was Satisfied
This is a good 1st person shooter game. If your looking for another good deathmatch style game, this one fits the bill. This game also has a cool stats feature. Infogrames set up a server that keeps all your stats (kills, deaths, items, frag per hour). I like this feature, it gives you another reason to stay addicted to the game.

The other game plays: CTF, Assault, and Domination give the game of good mix and all of the types have many online servers to play on with people actually on them playing.

In addition, the graphics on the game are quite nice too. The maps and player models are different from other 1st person shooters. The game runs well, I haven't had any problems. The weapon selection is also good and different, which I like.

Overall, this game is worth the money, you won't be disappointed with this game....more info

  • Good game...but...
Unfortunately, the single-player is incredibly boring...just bots and skirmishes. If there was a campaign, this game is flawless.

The multiplayer is great, and there are plenty of great modifications for this game. But if you don't have a broadband internet connection, don't think about it. This game revolves on a good internet connection....more info

  • And The Best Action FPS Award Goes To...
...for its fun factor, craftsmanship and mods - Unreal Tournament. Though basically a multiplayer, the player gets to fight off the included bots (computer-controlled opponents), which turn the game into an outstanding singleplayer experience.

UT's mods are the greatest. From Strike Force to Airfight (flight sim) to Tactical Ops, there is no denying that these addons challenge even those of the mighty Half-Life.

The difference with said title is the serious fun Unreal Tournament offers. Moreover, the game is easy to get into.

In addition, Using ngStats, you get to view your match statistics - yet another reason to become addicted to UT.

    A must have....more info

This has to be the best game ever. BUT WAIT! Before you buy please note that for just a couple extra bucks you can get Unreal Tournament Game of the Year Edition with tons of new stuff!! ChaosUT with tons of new weapons! A battle of skill in Rocket Arena! Terrorist attacks in Tactical Ops! I almost made the mistake of purchasing this one when there was an expansion available. • THE BEST ONLINE FRAG FEST
Ok I have never played the first Unreal, I played the demo of Q3 and I Bought this in early 2000 and I still play it. Deathmatch is the most intense mode of play,a battle good happen like this, you could find youself to chase down an enemy and kill him and a second later you turn the corner to be meet a missle. You respawn to see a persone faceing you with a poistol after many stafes and jumps you nail a bullet in his head and pick up his pistol, but in the cornner you see a chain gun and you go for it, but another player beates ya to it and tears you apart with it. Assult capture the flag Team Deathmatch, and Domination are lots of fun to, but if you want a team based online shooter buy Tribes 2, cause in this game it is mostly close quarter fraging. Onlnie is pretty tought but once you get used to it it gets better. If you don't fee like fighting humans go fight the 16 bots that have great A.I. and on the highest difficulty to kill, and you can battle em on over 50 maps! Not including the mappack and user made ones. The Graphics are stunning and the Frame Rate is good.
So if you want a deep team stratige online shooter get Tribes 2, if you want a fasted pace intesne deathmatch get this, you shouldn't be dissapointed....more info
  • One of the best games ever!
Still play this game after 2 and a half years after I purchased it. It flies on my new machine, and in my opinion is better than UT2003 because of the variety. If you do not have this game, get it now, you won't regret it!!...more info
  • HEAD SHOT!!!
This is the best FPS EVER! Warm up against the computer, then after a few months of training (you'll need it!) head online for some REAL competition!

This game has it all - several different modes of play (Deathmatch, Capture The Flag, Assult, LAST MAN STANDING!!!, etc), tons of levels, a practice mode, difficulty settings...the list goes on and on. And if you decide that's not enough - go online and download thousands of other levels and modifications to fit your needs!

The only "problem" with the game - system requirements. You need at LEAST a 500 mhz processor, a good graphics card helps a lot, pleny of hard drive space (for all those downloads of course!), and the most important thing of all - FAST internet connection. Don't even bother playing online with a 56k, you'll probably never win. You'll notice as you play that the people with the best connection wins EVERY time. Cable modem or DSL is the only way to go (unless you're lucky to have a T1 or T3 at work). Then you can hang with the best of them!...more info

  • Still tons of fun in 2007
I just revisited this game because I had such good memories of it. The variety of game types, the variety of weapons, the beauty of the maps, and the bot AI makes it the ultimate competitive FPS. It's all about the Tournament. And there are so many different kinds of tournament games to play, against real people or bots.

What's also very nice is the ability to set up your own favorite kind of practice session, with bots of your choosing, on whatever map you want. So, for example, you can play capture the flag, you alone against a large army of stupid bots, or a single insanely good bot. Or you can have a bot team, and give them commands. Or you can just set up a bots-only competition, and just watch them go at it.

I've played endlessly on the Capture the Flag - Facing Worlds map, and it still hasn't gotten old. New and interesting things happen each time I play. For each kind of bot-team, you need to fight with a different strategy.

And don't forget that the game screams on today's machines -- smooth as silk, and very pretty. Who needs better graphics?

Seems the game designers thought about everything you'd like to do, and they let you do it. The experience you'll get with this game is better than what you'll get from many newer games that tax your machine to the limit.

If you like FPS's, just buy. Unreal Tournament is a gift from the game gods....more info
  • Best Game Ever
Even if this game is a few years old, it still keeps up with latest games. For those who'll complain that there is no story, no new things, and that it's still the same as Quake and the others of their kinds, YOU ARE TERRIBLY WRONG. I played a lot of excellent games, but only two kept me addicted : UnrealTournament and CounterStrike. They both high adrenaline and fast gameplay. I played Diablo I & II & LoD, StarCraft & BroodWar, wich are amongst the best games ever, incredible storyboards, with incredible videos, but over time, I lacked interest, but I keep playing UnrealTournament quite a few hours each week un it's still as exciting and it gets better and better as my skills develops. If you have this game or will buy it soon, HAPPY FRAGGING!...more info

  • Great game, incredibly stable!
I bought this a while back because I wanted an inexpensive, LAN capable multiplayer game that wasn't dreadful.
UT fulfilled all the requirements perfectly.
Three weeks ago, we put UT on five different machines, ranging from bare system requirements to far beyond. There was absolutely no lag or jumping frames throughout.
Actual gameplay is a blast. Weapons are well balanced and suited to almost anyone's style of combat- from the close-quarters effectiveness of the Enforcers to the long-range sniper rifle.
Defualt keyboard controls are well thought out and easy to learn, altough the stock joystick layout leaves much to be deisred.
Levels are mostly good, though some multiplayer maps are extremely large and confusing, even for five people.
All in all, this game is well worth buying....more info
  • this game sucks
When I got this game I played it for about 2 days and decided it sucks.
Then after a couple of weeks I played it again because some friends said it was cool. I thought I should give it another chance and I played it with friends, but the game just doesn't appeal to me.
It's quake 1/2/3 for me! (even though 3 was a bit disappointing).
I don't get how everyone just seems to like UT.
This is the game that got me back to playing games that actually have a story....more info

  • My word, this could not be any better!
What a game! the graphic are just so life like and realistic. I played both this and Half Life and this came on top by far, it was just so much more superior in all ways. The settings are so imaginary. Also the weapons are all real life weapons which makes it even more realistic. By having real weapons you know what they can do so know what they are capable of. But one thing to do is to try in on God Mode and get back to me if you can do it! Its well hard but the good thing about the levels is that there are so many different skill levels to choose from. So you can start off playing against weaker players and when you get better you can test your ability to a much more challenging game! If you have the internet then play it on there, its great but very surprising of how many people are on it all the time so there are hundreds of people to play against and hundreds of different games and types to choose from. If you have friends that also have the game then you can even play on the internet against them, which is a great laugh. The controls and game play are very easy to handle, you can get used to them within minutes. And to top it all you cannot stop playing it and have to get to the next level. I would advise you to get it if you like that sort of games because you will love it like i do!...more info
  • THE BEST FIRST PERSON SHOOTER... PERIOD.
    HISTORY:

Since ID games invented this genre with Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, there have been many entries into this market that have proven to be unworthy contenders. While most games had impressive graphics (for their time), they lack in playablity.

For the longest time, one of games that stood out as achieving a balance between innovation and playability was Duke Nukem 3D. What made this game a multi-player frag feast was that besides having a unique style and great attitude, it had cool weapon set and almost perfect balance. This is almost the central component of a good first person shooter (FPS). What this led to in Duke Nukem was almost infinite frag variability and a whole lotta of fun...

Several years after that the action-game market remain without any new titles that captured the multiplayer crown from Duke Nukem, but then finally in the Winter of 1999 along games the new master of the FPS arena...

    HAIL TO THE KING BABY!

Unreal Tournament is the new king of this genre. It has a perfect weapon set that is completely balanced. Unlike Quake, where the guy with the rocket launcher has traditionally had the upper hand, UT has some great frag alternatives like the now classic "head shot".

In the end this balance leads to better game play because it fosters equal opportunity fragging with everyone having a fair chance to kill, instead of just the guy with the biggest gun. Because as we know once has the RPG, he keeps the RPG for awhile, and that is inheritly unfair.

In addition the game has well designed, and well thought-out levels especially for deathmatch. UT also offers some great alternative multiplayer games including the awesome Capture the Flag.

So heres to Unreal Tournament, the best FPS, and in my humble opinion THE BEST GAME to come along in a long long time. I suppose it will reign supreme for awhile, until perhaps Duke Nukem Forever makes its long overdue appearance on the store shelfs.

  • The Greatest PC game ever
This game has been on my hard drive for over 2 years, and not a week goes by that I don't play it. It's amazing!

The graphics are quite good, although new games and video cards are pumping out prettier eye candy. That's not where this game shines, though.

The meat of UT is in the gameplay. The bot (non player) AI is amazing, even after all this time. This is perhaps the only shooter where the single player mode is serious fun and isn't an afterthought. I sometimes even prefer playing against the computer than a human opponent. The varied modes: capture the flag, assault, etc, are very well done, and really immerse you in the action. The levels are well designed and intuitive.

The beauty of this game is that with TONS of free maps available online, you can customize it and keep this game fresh forever. There are even a couple of mods that aren't half bad.

This is the best purchase I've ever made....more info

This game was released when Unreal Tournament was at it's prime. None of the new ones can compare to how good this was back then and even now it's still a very good game if you have an older computer as it has some issues with newer hardware. Great game and the best UT has to offer....more info

  • The maps and intricacy beats everyone!
One thing Unreal has that Quake 3 doesn't is the maps (gaming environments/levels.) I'm continually blown away by their awesome graphics and ingenuity. Gameplay itself is also more complex, with a wider array of weapons and other options.

Some may disagree, but Unreal is more strategic than Q3. Of course, both require immense amounts of skill, Unreal is not as "In-Your-Face-Kill-Kill-Kill." This is especially true in some of the available Unreal mods (free, downloadable sub-games with different rules and goals than the retail version) like Counter Strike. The complexity of the maps and gameplay attributes to this most fundamental difference between the games.

Of course the flip side of this, is that deathmatch and capture-the-flag modes seem slightly more artificial than in Q3, in regards to the player-to-player intimacy of the game.

Usually it comes down to personal preference. People tend to like one or the other. Q3 is my fav, gameplay is just more carefree. But even so, I player Unreal as well. The games just have two different personalities...both are great.

I reccommend to get both (You can never have enough games, especially good ones.) And with any multiplayer game, explore the fan sites, download additional maps and mods, and immerse yourself in the experience.

    It's all about fun....more info

  • This game stinks
This game is one of the worst game I've ever seen in years! I know that I'll get a lot of angry reviewers against me, but I don't care. The reason I hate this game so much is because I need a killer machine and super-speed-connection to run this boring game smoothly, and the graphics and sounds aren't great at all...bunch of lame, boring game features, uninteresting multiplay, simple textures, simple maps(having lots of maps doesn't means that this has the best maps)...This game is complete trash! Don't waste your money on this, buy diablo ll instead......more info
  • Important to those looking to buy:
I have what some would call a totally unbalanced machine: DSL, Voodoo 5, 20 GB Hard Drive, 300 MHz processor. It is the last item in the list that really counts. Current games require a 200-300 MHz processor. REQUIRE. That means you can run them on a machine like mine, but to actually run them to their full extent, a computer with a 500-700 MHz porcessor is needed. This applies to most games, including Unreal Tournament. There are some other factors that can improve performance, such as video cards and video memory. I have an extremely good video card: Voodoo 5. This runs well with all of the games that I own. The video card matters, but not much (I used to run on an ATI Rage II). Since I have this odd computer, I recieve slowdowns, freezes, and timeouts. A "slowdown" is a jumpy effect, almost like a bad stop-action (claymation) film. A "freeze" is this: when I run into battle, my screen literally freezes for 5-10 seconds (along with my character), and after I return to normal play, I am DEAD. =). A "timeout" (my definition may not be the real one) is me getting disconnected from a game because my processor cannot process all of the game info needed to run a large multiplayer game. You should only get this product if your computer is up to it. You need a good video card, a good hard drive, a good CD-ROM, a good modem (DSL, cable, T1, or T3 is preferred), and especially a good processor (over 500-600 MHz).\

Now, if your computer does not reach the previous requirements, get Quake III: Arena. It is almost the same thing but with less weapons. They both have horrible single player, but you should think of those missions as training for multiplayer. The reason I suggest Q3A is because it has almost no slowdowns. Even If your computer meets or surpasses the requirements for UT, get Q3A also. Trust me....more info

  • Unreal Tournament > Quake 3
Quake 3 just can not compare to Unreal Tournament. This game is the king of shooter games. Why? It just all works together. The levels go in so many variations from running through caves, to being in a street alley, to jumping rooftops of skyscrapers. The guns are great, esp with their secondary fire feature. The use of color/detail is very vivid, and not bland/dark like Quake 3. The background music is amazing, and the graphics are smooth and crisp. Not to mention this game has an excellent bot feature, and has more than just deathmatch. We have all played capture the flag, but also domination where your team tries to rack up the most points, and assault where one team attacks the base, one team defends the base. Best game I own now. • Best First Person Shooter Available
This game amazes me every time I play this cause it actually is one of the few games that I own that really tests the power of my Voodoo3 3D card, and I love it! With 5 game plays (Last Man Standing, Capture the Flag, Assault, Domination, and Deathmatch) this title will always be in your cd-rom drive. The best thing about this game is the multiplayer capabilities and the fact that there are 1,000s of maps to download that will make Unreal Tournament fresh as the last time you played it. It also has mods that you can install onto your system which are very kool such as Strike Force, and many others that I will not go into. And if it doesn't sound like it can get much better there are also mods that add "skins" to your game (character skin) so you can look super fly for your murdering spree. If you like games like this deffinately check out Half-Life, Quake 3 and Deus Ex....more info
  • THE BEST competition FPS game ever created.
I bought this game when I had an old Pentium II back in 1999. It was just simply fun, just fire and kill the other guy, not the fancy hi-tech, complicated thing that this genre has become. I wasted many hours playing online with people all over the world!. The best FPS to play online ever created. Period. ...more info

  • Breakthrough in multiplayer FPS
Unreal Tournament blows the competition out of the water in terms of ease of use and multiplay. It has dozens upon dozens of configurable options that can suit anyone from a real newbie who has never touched a computer in his/her life to a hardcore gamer with years of experience like me. The graphics are as good or better than Quake 3, even though there are no curved surfaces. The requirements for running this game aren't too steep. It runs fine on my old Pentium Pro 200/128 MB ram/voodoo2, and is absolutely incredible on my 1GHz athlon thunderbird/256 MB ram/voodoo 3. There are no hints of slowdown on any of the included maps. Which brings me to the point of how varied and unique the levels are. There are dozens of levels in the game and thousands of quality works available in the extensive UT community. There are several completely different styles of play, for those who are a little bored with the ole deathmatch thing. The single player campaign isn't too cohesive, but it offers the newbie good training for multiplay. The game connects to a server that lists thousands of servers on which you can play. There is virtually no lag on most of them, and if you have broadband then you're set. In a word, FUN. I've had this game for almost a year and I still play it for hours on end sometimes....more info
  • Unreal!!
When Unreal was released back in May of 1998, it turned a lot of heads. But while the game delivered the most immersive and interesting single-player shooter for its time, the multiplayer game was very weak in comparison. The weapons never really seemed to pack a punch. The deathmatch maps were hit and miss. The performance of Internet games took months of patching before it was acceptable, but by the time that happened, most people had already moved on to bigger and better games. In contrast, Unreal Tournament goes in a new direction for the first-person shooter genre by stripping away anything that resembles a single-player adventure mode, and instead, it strictly focuses on the more popular multiplayer aspects of the genre.
Rather than spend development time working on a cohesive single-player scenario that most players will only play through once or twice, Epic Games used that same time to refine the multiplayer game. Consequently, the only single-player mode available serves as training for multiplayer matches by pitting you against computer-controlled bots. The bots have good, adjustable artificial-intelligence settings, which let you tailor the game's difficulty to your own personal skill level. On the lowest setting, anyone should be able to defeat the bots with little or no hassle, but once you bump up the difficulty, you'll have an actual challenge on your hands.

The single-player mode will also teach you the basics about each different type of game contained in Unreal Tournament. Of course, deathmatch is the old standard free-for-all battle. Capture the flag, the quintessential first-person-shooter team game, is also included. Domination is a different type of team game. Each Domination level has three control points; when you touch a control point, you claim it for your team. The longer you hold a control point, the more points your team scores. So you duke it out to see who can hold the control points the longest. Assault is yet another new team game in which one team plays offense, and the other defends a base. Each map has a different set of offensive objectives (push the button at the front of the train, destroy four computers, and so forth). If the offensive team completes its mission, the two teams switch sides, and the new offensive team must complete the same objectives in the same amount of time it took the first team to succeed. The selection of weapons in Unreal Tournament is mostly taken from Unreal, but the weapons have all been redesigned to look and sound much better. The new weapons include the impact hammer, which is more or less a portable pneumatic piston that you can use as a last resort when the rest of your weapons are empty. The pulse gun fires small energy shots in its primary mode, but the secondary fire spits out a rail of energy that you can sweep around, like Quake's lightning gun. The redeemer is essentially a portable nuclear missile; the primary fire mode shoots it in a straight line, but the secondary mode switches to a really great-looking guided-missile view that lets you target foes from across the level. The nice thing about the game's weapons is that they seem really well balanced. There isn't a single weapon that causes you to run away in fear when you see it in your opponent's hands. The weapons may seem a little alien to players used to other first-person shooters, but once you get a feel for how each weapon operates, using them becomes second nature.

As good as the original Unreal looked, Unreal Tournament looks even better. The character models and skins look excellent, and there are quite a few choices to make when designing your character. First, you'll choose a model, then a skin, and then you'll have a choice of which face to put on the model. The textures throughout the game look great, and the levels that have backgrounds look especially amazing. HyperBlast, the final level in the single-player game, is a good example: It takes place on a speeding starship. Stop to look out a window and you'll see stars zooming by. Hop out of the ship and run around on its roof and you'll be able to see other nearby ships keeping pace with you as you fly through space. Unreal Tournament has consistently ambitious level design throughout, and the entire game benefits from it. The levels feel less like simple first-person shooter maps and more like actual locations, such as starships, old mining facilities, and temples. The game's music lends some atmosphere to the proceedings, but it never overshadows the crucial sound effects you'll need to hear to keep tabs on what items your opponents are picking up.

The first-person shooter genre is fiercely competitive. But Unreal Tournament rises above the rest with its solid multiplayer performance, from its good weapon balance to its great level design. The numerous game types and mini-mods that ship with the game give you plenty of options right out of the box, and the large variety of great maps ensure a fast-paced and exciting game, no matter how many players you've got. Even considering its lack of a solid single-player adventure, Unreal Tournament is the most complete first-person shooter available....more info

  • Death comes quickly
Anyone who has played (or is still playing) the Quake series will like this game. More difficult to control and figure out weaponry than Quake (more options though). Once you get the hang of it you will get addicted. Easy to connect to servers so you can get killed (if you are like me) by people you don't know. Plus with games like capture the flag you can put a totally different spin on the whole thing. Just get used to the controls before joining up with a server or it won't be much fun....more info
