Budding ballerinas ages 4 to 6 receive a thorough introduction to ballet at the tutelage of "Miss Rosemary" Boross in Baby Ballet. The program features Rosemary Boross, a student helper, and a small class of preschool age dancers as they explore the basics of warming up at the barre, stretching, center work, dancing across the floor, and rev®¶r®¶nce. Miss Rosemary first describes and demonstrates steps like pli®¶, tendu, sut®¶, chass®¶, and grande jet®¶, then leads her class through each step to the accompaniment of original piano music by Bruce Stephen Foster. Because the program covers a large variety of steps and progresses fairly quickly, it is most effective when used in conjunction with enrollment in an introductory ballet class. Alternately, young dancers may want to view the video in short segments, then follow with ample practice time to ensure the correct execution of each individual step.

In Tot Tap, Miss Rosemary Boross presents an authentic first-year tap class specifically geared toward children ages 4 to 6. Miss Rosemary covers a variety of basic tap steps like shuffle, dig, heel drops, toe taps, heel taps, and cramp rolls. She carefully details and demonstrates each tap step, then incorporates the steps into simple dances rehearsed by preschool-age, beginning tap students and accompanied by original, rhythmic music by Bruce Stephen Foster. This informative, 30-minute video can be used alone or in conjunction with enrollment in a beginning tap class.

Junior Jazz is an introductory jazz dance lesson aimed specifically at children ages 4 to 6. Teacher Rosemary Boross covers four styles of dance within this "jazz" presentation: hip hop, musical theatre, rock, and swing. After demonstrating and explaining the individual steps within a combination, Miss Rosemary invites young viewers to dance along with her, two young adult helpers, and a small class of preschool children. Each dance combination has an animal theme like "Hippo Hop" and "Jungle Monkey Swing" and is set to fun original music composed by Bruce Stephen Foster and Brian Sepel with lyrics by Boross. --Tami Horiuchi

  • A bit too fast for beginners?
My sister-in-law, a high schooler who has taken a few years of dance classes at a local dance studio, noted that the instructor in this video seems to move a bit too quickly for beginning dancers. My 4-year-old daughter does enjoy the video and tries to follow along, but she definitely is having a hard time picking up most of the moves. It's a hard balance to strike, though, because you want to go slow enough for beginners, yet you also want it to be advanced enough that there's the opportunity for the person who owns the DVD to grow as s/he repeatedly practices with it. So all in all, I'd say it's a well-done video, but buyers need to be aware of what may possibly be too steep of a learning curve....more info
  • Good DVD Dance Class
We bought this DVD to encourage our 3 daughters to get up and move. They love dressing up in full dance gear and doing each of the 3 classes offered on this DVD. There is ballet, tap and jazz. Their favorite is jazz which teaches them some fun routines like "Jungle Monkey Swing" with fun, funky moves. This DVD does get them moving and they really enjoy it. The instructor is good, but she is somewhat mechanical and the entire class could be more fun if she were more animated and excited. Overall, a great buy for hours of movement and fun for my children. It is fun to see other kids on TV dancing so well!...more info
  • boring
My 4 yr old is in dancing. I bought this tape hoping to help her, plus give her some exercise when it's too hot outside to do anything. But, it sucks. It's cheaply made and is so boring my daughter will not do it....more info
  • Very Dated!
I bought this with the intention of getting some ideas for the children I teach. I was VERY un satistfied. BORING and looks like it is from the 80s....more info
  • Great video for young girls!
Well, I bought this video with some trepidation, because there were a few negative reviews. At the time my daughter was about 18 mos and very interested in gymnastics and music - but of course, way too young for a dance class. We watched it the first time with some dismay - Ms. Rosemary is a little dry, and the first time my daughter didn't pay much attention. But the next week she was asking to see "the girls" and doing the first few steps.

My daughter is now almost 2 1/2 and LOVES this video. We are pretty strict about limiting video time to only one or two hours a week but I worry a little less with this one as she is actively participating in the class, not just sitting and staring. I try to do it with her so it's even more interactive, and so I can reinforce the steps. She loves to watch the girls and the dance steps are taught slowly enough so that, with repetition, she gets the jist at least (my performance expectations weren't high!). She does the hip-hop dances everywhere and has really learned the rhythm as well.

This has been a great learning experience for my daughter, who is very physical and musically-oriented. I highly recommend this video for anyone wanting to introduce their young daughter to the world of dance. Also a good way to see if your child is ready for a class. I just wish there were more videos like this - we'd buy them....more info
  • It was just Okay
My daughters were 4 and 7 when we got this video. It was age appropriate for both of them, but never really held their interest. They both were already enrolled in dance class and I felt this was a good reinforcer of dance vocabulary. Some parts of it were very simple, some parts were too complex for them and they became frustrated and stopped watching it. I certainly don't think that the titles "Baby Ballet" and "Tot Tap" were fitting. This was for kids older than babies and tots. ...more info
  • I dod not like this this DVD, I have a 3 , 7 and 9 year ole and they did not like this DVD, but I am sure it is good for others.
I have an 3, 7 and 9 year girls, they could not follow along with the DVD, it was to fast for them to keep up, but Iam sure it works for some others....more info
  • Great intro to dancing!
I recently purchased this for my daughters, ages six and a half and two and a half. My oldest loves it. We've done it together a couple of times and she has done it on her own a couple of times. My youngest likes to twirl around and imitate her sister, so it even holds her interest for a few minutes. If you're looking for a substitute for dance lessons, this won't fit the bill. However, if you are looking for a great intro to different styles of dance, this video is fantastic. There are two routines for each style of dance, demonstrated in short teaching segments. The teacher first demos the moves by herself--very clearly--and then you see the class perform that segment, eventually putting in all together. The teacher is nice and the girls in the video are cute as can be--I would guess around the age of my daughter. The dances are challenging enough for a new dancer to need some practise before they have the routines down, but not so overwhelming that they give up. Doing the different dances has helped my daughter decide which kind of dance lessons she'd like to take. It's also a great way to sneak in a little exercise for my daughters when the weather's bad. I'd highly recommend it!...more info
  • Loosen Up a Little!
I bought this video for my almost 3 year old. She can't do the moves, but I didn't expect her to. I knew she would simply enjoy watching it with occassional participation, and the exposure would help her with dance classes in the near future. She DOES like this video, and so does my 9 year old (but she doesn't know I'm telling you this). The reason this video doesn't get 5 stars is because Miss Mary doesn't smile!!!! The best way to teach a child is by example, and Miss Rosemary could benefit by lightening up a little and showing us and her class her shining pearly whites! It's okay to have fun and look like it, too!...more info
  • Great video for little girls
I bought this for my 3 year old daughter and she loves it. It offers tap, ballet, and jazz. It has simple easy moves that she can do in the living room. We don't have a ballet bar so she holds onto the coffee table and it works just fine. It's perfect for the beginer who isn't quite ready for classes....more info
  • Great way to introduce children to the world of dance.
This is a really cute dvd. I would guess the students are anywhere from 5-8 years old in each segment.
Each collection shows how to do correct movements, gives the correct name of actions performed and creates a little dance part at the end.
I believe it to be a good way to see if your child really wants to take classes, to practice positions learned in dance school and also to excersise.
I also think it is a good way to remember positions learned during the summer break from Dance centers....more info
  • Good video for reviewing dance basics with preschoolers
I bought this video so that my daughter could review the basic steps learned in her pre-school dance class. She really enjoys the video - it's like having an instructor and a bunch of kids her age in our home. I enjoy it also because I can practice and learn along with her. One section (ballet, tap or jazz) is a great mini work-out that tires her out before bedtime....more info
  • Great DVD for aspiring young dancers!

My two-and-a-half year old loves this DVD!

The instructor demonstrates each step clearly and then invites the children watching to practice that step with the class on-screen. Each routine is broken down into multiple, easy-to-follow bits and is definately an excellent introduction to dacing in all three styles.

My daughter loves to perform the routines, even away from the DVD (like in the middle of the supermarket!) and that shows me that she has truly learned them.

I highly, highly recommend this DVD for the aspiring young dancer. ...more info
  • Great Dance DVD For Kids
This is a great dvd for children who are interested in ballet, tap or jazz. I purchased this for my 4 year old daughter who has been taking dance for the last 6 months. I thought it would be a good teaching tool during the summer months and give her a head start for the upcoming year. The teacher is good at giving instruction, but you may have to hit the back button a few times to fully understand the moves she is teaching, especially when she puts the moves in combination. The ballet and tap were easier to learn for my daughter. The jazz, however, is more advanced and my daughter just seemed to get lost when trying the moves. I definitely recommend this to any parent who has a child who wants to try dance for the first time or one who wants the extra practice between classes....more info
  • Very Satisfied Customer !
I am amazed that anyone gave this instructional DVD anything less than 5 stars. It teaches them so much for the amount of money I spent. I purchased 2 of these DVDs for my 4 granddaughters, aged 2,4,5, and 7. I also bought them each complete ballet outfits. Their reactions were as follows. The 7 year old liked the ballet part the best, and was very interested, the 5 year old is a little shy, and did'nt have much of a reaction at first, but with some encouragement from her parents and sister, Im sure she will participate. My other 2 granddaughters loved it and immediately tried to learn all of the moves, and have wanted their parents to put the DVD in repeatedly ever since they got it. My advice: Buy this DVD, get yourself and your kids off the couch, and spend time together encouraging them to learn how to dance and have fun. But dont waste your money if all you are trying to do is plug them into the TV to get them out of your way for awhile, because there are thousands of movies out there that can do that better than this video. Just remember how important excersize is for a healthy body! In closing, my personal favorite is the jazz section, which includes 4 adorable dance routines that they learn step by step. Awesome job Miss Rosemary! I hope there will be more in the future. Thanks! Happy Grandma ...more info
  • Bad Production values
Although the kids are cute the production value is like someones home camera. It seems the producers have strung together 3 old videos to make one long tape. The instructor is cold and not endearing which makes me wonder how children can possibly relate to this tape. My child watched it once and now it sites on the shelf. Ebay anyone?...more info
  • Good for non-beginners
I bought this DVD for my 4 year old. She enjoys dancing around the house, as well as watching a yoga video that I picked up. This DVD was a bit too advanced for her. Although the teacher shows each position, it still goes too fast for a little one who has never had a dance class. My daughter did enjoy the jazz section, and I caught her trying many of their moves. This DVD is great if your little one already has a little dance background. Be prepared to have tap shoes for the tap section, as the teacher focuses on the sounds that a tap shoe makes. We don't have tap shoes and were practicing on the carpet, making it difficult to fully appreciate the tapping. I will probably put this DVD away and bring it out again when my little one is closer to 5....more info
