Customer Reviews:

  • Straight up ACTION
Hell yeah man, Max Payne 2. The original was ingenious in a simplistic way and Maxy Payne 2 brings back all of the good things, fixes the bad, and brings more things to the table. This game is awesome, definitely worth the $5 it cost buying it used from Amazon.

It's been 2 years since the events of the first game, Max has cleared his name and is now working as a detective for the NYPD. During a crime scene investigation he comes across Mona Sax, the girl from the first game he thought had died. They run into contracted killers dressed as 'cleaners', they must escape and find out who wants both of them dead.

The game started off a bit slower than the first, there's a lot more story this time around. The developer's tried to beef up the story to make the game a more complete package. I remember playing through this years ago and thinking it blew away the original, but this time around I didn't see it.... until it got to the point where Max and Mona are working together. It's almost as if the game decides you've had enough 'training' with easy kills and switches it up to some dope stuff. Max and Mona are at a construction site, running through an empty building but they're in different locations. There's a bunch of guys hiding behind pallets, boxes, pillars, and when you go in there guns blazing you just see stuff flying everywhere. The bullet time lasts much longer this time around in order to encourage you to get into the action. You also get to play as Mona at times, as well as be accompanied by her or other characters throughout the game.

When you activate the bullet time, the screen turns into a sepia tone and everything slows down except your aim. Imagine taking cover when you come across a room with 5 guys, you throw a grenade from behind cover, activate bullet time and rush in there mowing guys down with your uzis. Max is out in the open and has to reload so he extends his arms out and does a crouched 360 spin like in the Matrix, which helps avoid shots. Those that turned to run away are caught by the grenade blast. Nice.

The environments are much better this time around and you encounter more enemies which leads to more action. In this respect, Max Payne 2 is much better than the original. Still no puzzles, thank God, just pure action.

Gone are the dream sequences where you had to balance on a blood trail in a space of nothingness. I guess people complained enough. Instead, the dream sequences are back but you're simply running through a hospital. At one point you encounter a double of yourself who has been locked up and accused of murder. He pleads his case as he runs away from you.

    "I've been FRAMED!"

hahaha! That's classic, the voice acting and story are the same as in Max Payne. I'm glad that I was buzzed for that one. The story got kind of involved with conspiracies from different characters from the first game, I found it hard to connect all the dots. The part of the story that made sense to me were the events there were currently happening. Regardless, the cut scenes with the story board illustrations were even better and gave the game personality. Max still has dope lines:

"I was compelled to give him back his gun.... one bullet at a time"

I can keep going off on the good things, there's plenty of health available, no shortage of guns and ammo, the quick-save feature guarantees you don't have to replay any area just because you died. It always feels like you're making progress and never felt like a chore playing it. When you beat the game, you unlock harder difficulties, the 'New York Minute' mode, and a survival mode where you have to stay alive while fighting endless enemies. It's dope. When you beat the game in the hardest setting, you'll get a different ending.

I can't end this without pointing this out: As the title indicates, this is the "Fall of Max Payne". Quickly you'll see why: he stopped being OTFABS. It's almost hard to believe. A lot of the perdition he gets himself into is because he's whipped. Most of the time I was in disbelief, "What the hell man, don't do that! You gotta be OTFABS! Ah, well no choice but to kill all these guys now." If he were to remain OTFABS the game would have ended in the first act. Max goes through perdition....more info
  • Well, they are successfully mimicking Hollywood...
...by producing dull paint-by-numbers sequels. The original Max Payne was inventive (with its bullet-time interludes and playable nightmare sequences) and moody (pulp comic storytelling and Noir York backdrops), and held my attention despite some pretty serious gameplay and difficulty balance flaws. Unfortunately Max Payne 2 has retained the flaws and added nothing new to the experience.

MP2 is still too easy with Bullet Time assistance, far too many health and ammo powerups, and an overall simple level of play. I'm just an average shooter player, but I breezed through it in a few hours. And maybe due to less inspired level structure than the first (warehouses...ughh), it felt shorter. The complex time-warped romance of MP2 is disorienting and silly, and by the halfway point I had been jerked around by so many false flashbacks and faked death scenes that I really couldn't care less if Mona lived or died.

Yes, the graphics are nice and the storyboarding and character expressions are more realistic, but it will take more depth and innovation to hold my interest in the Max Payne series....more info
  • Nearly Perfect, Nearly Breathtaking, Completely Max
Now that i have played this film noir love story, i can understand why so many people compared it to enter the matrix. It's ten times better. Matrix fans will have fun with the bullet time perfection, but max payne fans will appreciate everythign else. It is important that you know the first game story in order to fully understand the second though. The graphics are gorgeous, just one look at Mona Sax and her twin desert eagles and i tihnk you'll agree with me. The story-line is thick and twisting with dead ends here and there followed by an alternate route blocked by bravado and scum just waiting to eat your rapid deadly lead bullets. Ten minutes into this game it does get a little to difficult for those first timers but if you stick with it it gets ten times better and equally harder as the story unfolds. Nothign is as it seams in the world of max payne, when the sky is blue, the ground is red, and when your clips are empty, the danger is closer then ever. MAx is back and better then ever. Deffinately not a flick for the kids though, blood, gore and plenty of profanity. Stilll worthy of classic reference, this one should go down in xbox history as one fo the best action games ever put out by rockstar or any other gamign company for that matter. It's Max alright, yet it remains unique....more info
  • excellent game!!...but it's really short
i bought this game on late december, but i didn't have time to play it until january, but when i started i couldn't stop 'til the end! the game is really good, not so hard not so easy, and absolutely not-frustrating (especially for the quick save). the game is short, that's a bad thing for some people, but i don't care, i like to move on from game to game quickly (otherwise i'd probably get bored). i reccomend renting this game rather than buying it. i forgot, the story is also really good but u have to pay attention or u might get lost, especially if u didn't play the first one (like me)...more info
  • Old but still fun
I have an xbox 360 and I have been buying older used titles to play. While the titles are older, they're new to me and heck if you buy them used through amazon they're cheaper than renting. I got both max payne and max payne 2 used and both worked beautifully. As to the games, both were great fun and very entertaining, the story pulls you along, and the action is non stop. While it is true that technically they are dated, they still have the goods...for both I paid approximatedly ten bucks which is cheaper than a movies ticket and popcorn and ended up having hours of fun being in my own detective movie. The dream sequences are a hoot, and the action keeps you on your toes. If you haven't played these titles, buy them used and give them a go. Then resell them to recoup your investment. You can't go wrong....more info
  • Good game, but shadow of former self!
Max Payne 2 had all the great aspects the first Max payne had, but fell through when it was time to deliver. If you played the first Max Payne then chances are you will buy this game hands down, possibly for story reasons. However Max Payne 2 does not live up to its former self. With only about 12 hours of gameplay it is possible to sit down and finish the game in one sitting. Before long you will be engrosed with the so-so plot and end up just wanting to beat the next level to see how everything plays out, but when the game comes to a sudden stop, you will find yourself asking "Thats It?" Max 2 still has the great action elements that made the first one such a hit, and with unlockable difficulties you may find yourself playing through this game more then once. Nothing new is added (sadly), so if you liked the first Max you will probably love this one, but there is not enough change to sway new players into buying this game!...more info
  • Rock Star's Finest
The innovative Grand Theft series gets all the press, but for me, Max Payne is tops. As far as 3rd-person action/shooters go, it can't be matched. The graphic novel cut-scenes are compelling and, along with the moody orchestral score ( think the Angel theme ), really draw the player into Max's noir state-of-mind. Yeah it's short, but a game this fully imagined and atmospheric is a rare thing. If only all M-rated games were as sophisticated and intelligent. Sure there's blood, profanity, and a little sex, but it's never excessive or gratuitous and it serves to enhance the grim story, always reminding the player that this ain't Marioland. To wrap it up, every single aspect of this game is expertly done: Gameplay, levels ( the theme/amusement park is genius ), sound, voice-acting and story. Highest recommendation, can't wait for #3! ...more info
  • Great game
I bought both Max Paynes and enjoyed them both. Max Payne 2 was great. The only draw back was that it was short but that only irritated me because I was enjoying the story and twists so much. If you enjoy games that actually have a plot then this is one for you. This is one of the best games I have bought up to date....more info

Well all I could say It was fun. It was easier then the first one but then again I did put easy never now what I might get my self into if I put normal or hard it was a fun game has the movie sence to it. Its a real fun shooter if you liked the first one youll love this one...more info
  • max payne 2 is kick ass but the first was better
well i thought this game was pretty fun and it looked great on my computer it really put my ati radeon pro graphics card to the test. It was fun and there was alot of hard core action and the story was put together well my only complaint was that this game gets hard really fast like after the first 15 minutes also the sory is more like a corny love movie with action if you havent played the first one you should it is better than number two....more info
  • Make a game in which I can just kill everything...OK...good.
Even if dumbed-down from the PC version, the physics in this game are really slick. Shoot at the pop can, hit the pop can, pop can fly, pop can spin, pop can land and make crunch noise. Shoot at the villian, hit the villian, villain fly, villain spin, villain land and say, "Noooo," or, "Aaarghhh!"

Max Payne 2's story, characters, and level design are all engrossing and improved from those of the preceding game, as well. A brilliant little gem of a game. It gets four stars because it only takes 6-7 hours and there is no replay value whatsoever. (...)...more info

  • Max Payne 2 is awesome but...
This game kept me occupied for quite a few weekends. The graphics were stunning, the story was awesome, and the fights reminded me of scenes from the original Matrix film.

I do, however, have a few complaints:
    a) the AI is sometimes a bit messy
    b) it was way too short compared to the original Max Payne, and while the story did have some undertones carried over from the original Max Payne, it was a huge departation from the first Max Payne
    c) the secret ending wasn't as incredible as i thought it would be...more info

  • Part II of anything never good!!!
This is just another sad story of how another title of the same series often turns out to be bad. The story, by all means, is the most pathetic one I have ever heard of. They changed Mona Sax's appearance and her voice for obvious reasons (to appeal to male players of the game). That's all nice and good. But, that alone doesn't make a game great.

Max Payne I was great. Max Payne II is alright!!! The Graphics have improved greatly. I can admit that much. The game is more funny than the previous in that the bad guys say stupid things in the game that make you laugh. But, that's about it. Nothing else makes it more special than Max Payne I. This game does not portray as much violence as Max Payne I. But, it is still not a game for kids. No doubt about it. And the game cannot be played on a 64-bit PC. So, watch out!!!...more info
  • Good game
Max payne 2 is a good game but not a great game let me tell you why. There are only three drawbacks in this game that bother me, first off the bullet time is differant and not in a good way. When you go in to bullit time the color of the screen goes to a drab kind of yellow and the slow motion is not very slow unlike the first game where it was very slow and it felt much more matrix like, second the game is much easyer than the first and is also shorter, and third there is a bullet hole glitch in the game that will let you blast holes in some rooms and not in others? All in all it is a good game but I recomend the first game It's much better....more info
  • A True Masterpiece on all levels
When Max Payne first came out in 2001, I was blown away. The voice-acting, action sequences, bullet-time, incredible story, along with a great cast of characters. In Max Payne 2, everything is better or improved. One thing that made this game so great was its story. Torn between right and wrong, love and hate, not to mention a dark tragic past, is a great background to set the story. This is perhaps one of the best games ever made on any system. I have this game for the computer. I reccomend that you buy it for pc. You can download cool mods, etc. In addition, the ending you could see coming frim a mile away. However, the ending is great but very sad. After the last scene, the song "late goodbye" plays which fits in with the theme of the game. Never have I played a game that contains so much emotion and violence. PARENTS!! THIS IS GAME IS NOT FOR YOUNG KIDS. This is a game that is truly hard to top. The only bad thing was that it is short. The story alone is a good reason to buy the game, not to mention bullet-time. The story unfolds like a movie, which makes for an incredible gaming experience.IF YOU DONT HAVE IT ALREADY, BUY IT. Now i am waiting for max payne 3 to come out and raise the standards for action games again....more info
  • Already waiting for Max Payne 3!
Max Payne 2 may be shorter than the first one but everything is so much better in this game that it will leave you more than satisfied.

First of all, let's talk about graphics. If you're into PC games than you might simply look at Max Payne 2 on the X-box and say that the graphics are just okay. But if you're anything like me you will be deeply satisfied with the detail of the graphics in this game. While Max Payne 1 had good graphics, Max Payne 2 has graphics that are sharper with a lot more attention paid to the small things. In this game you can brush up against things and knock stuff over and shoot bad guys into crates (which look very cinematic in slow motion). I love these features and gives the game a much more realistic feel than Max Payne 1.

Next, the sound is superb. The voiceovers are fantastic (just like in the first Max Payne). The background music gives a very haunting mood to the game and really gets you into the story. Also, the sound effects are crazy. The sounds of gunfire are intense and are some of the best gun sound effects that I've ever heard in a shooter game.

Now, let's move on to the plot. While Max Payne 2's plot isn't quite as captivating as Max Payne 1's was it still draws you in due to some fantastic voiceovers and character twists. The ending of this game is reason enough to get this game.

For those of you who played the first Max Payne and like the gameplay you will be pleased to know that the gameplay has basically remained the same.

Now one thing I see not being brought up here is Max Payne's nightmare levels. Players of the first Max Payne might remember those pain-in-the-@$$ levels trying to jump from one very thin board to the next wondering what the hell the point was. Well, you can now rejoice because while Max Payne 2 does have the nightmare levels, they don't have any frustrating challanges like that anymore. This time you basically get to walk around and enjoy what goes on around you and get more into Max's head at the same time. Bravo!

I have heard some people complaining about Max Payne not being innovative enough but I don't see their points. Why mess with a winning formula? The graphics are great, the characters are captivating, and the controls are some of the most user friendly that I've seen in a shooter in a while. Especially now that the Max Payne 2 is only $10.00 there is absolutely nothing to complain about!

Max Payne 2 will not let you down especially if you loved the first Max Payne game. Get it and enjoy it! I guarantee you that once you play it you will, just like I am, be waiting quite impatiently for Max Payne 3!...more info
  • Not as great as it sounds.
Max Payne is not a great game. It's all shooting, no fighting or dirving at all. Its story is so werid and freaked out that I can't understand it at all. I expected better from Rockstar....more info
  • Good game. Too short, too little freedom.
Nice graphics on Xbox. Strictly scripted--interesting plot--but very little freedom of choice. Basically, I played through the game without stopping, watched all the cutscenes and everything, and the game didn't even take ten hours. Maybe like six. No puzzles. Minor exploration. Lots of gunning down dudes. Cute plot points, lots of film refs (I esp. liked the running parallelism between Max's story and an in-game TV show called "Address Unknown"...a dead ringer for Twin Peaks.). The girl is hot. The guns blaze. It's a cool game, but way, waaaay too brief. Glad I rented it.

Look for the secret room in Part One, Chapter Seven. "In Memoriam, Miika Forssell." Very cool....more info

I dont want to spoil anything but everything about this game is awesome. I don't know about you but in my opinion this game is better than GTA Vice City. Just go get the game and you will not be disappointed....more info
  • Don't blink........
Plain and simple this game is just too short. I figured I could get my $55 of satisfaction by playing this game 2-3 hours a day for the next couple of weeks, at least. Well, 3 days, and approximately 9 hours of game play later, the game was over. These additional chapters to the original story line should have just been made available on XBOX live for download. Do yourself a favor and just rent it over a weekend. You'll beat the game and save yourself money....more info
  • Max Payne playing it ...
Max Payne 2 is very similar to the first one. Unfortunately, if the first game was an ok game years ago, the new Max Payne just doesn't hold up anymore. In the last years, there were a lot of advancements made in terms of gameplay and graphics. MP2 just doesn't care about those. To call the graphics horrible is an understatement. Everything is blocky and there are only two colors in this game: dark grey and dark brown. The textures look so bad, you'd think this is a Playstation 1 game.
The story is told in cutscenes, but other than that, you're left with mindless shooting. Level design is similar with first game - very linear, follow one path, don't think too much and kill everybody. It's a simplistic approach that worked 10 years ago in all FPS, but now we evolved from that, didn't we?! Bullet time was great in the original, but so many games have done it better meanwhile, while MP2 keeps it the same. And hey, if the graphics would be good, maybe you'd care about it a bit (see Enter the Matrix, another bad game which at least had better graphics).
MP2 is also a pain to play. While the controls are similar to Halo's, the speed of moving the target particle is not. It moves too fast and because of that, the developers had to use an auto-aim feature. The auto-aim is not like in Halo though - you will kill enemies even if you hardly shoot in the right direction. This ruins the game as a shooter as well.
Overall, i would not recommend renting or buying this game. We have to give a clear signal to those developers. Tell them that if we spend money on their product they better make something that it's not stuck in the eighties. And if they don't know how, look at Bioware, Bethesda, Bungie, UbiSoft Montreal and others....more info
  • Holy Guacamole!
This game is spectacular! It has no flaws. The first game limited you, and, no offense to the designers, had the most hideous facial graphics ever! In Max Payne 2, he has great facial graphics. The game is more like a movie, it has calm scenes that may be in the NYPD offices and apartments to The Cleaners (Hence the name) and The Fun House (Hence the name again).

  • WOW!
I never played Max Payne the first one. I decided to check out the sequel and see what is the big deal with everything. First of all Max Payne's story line keeps you guessing throughout the story, things you might never guess happens. In the begining, it is a little confusing when you are in the hospital and you see the chief dead, but you will catch on. Game play wise the game is also ranked high, Max's movement is realistics so are the enemies, facial expression are real most of the times(except when they talk), Bullet Time is a little repetive, however it is not a - at all. Graphics is definitely improvement over the first one. Replay value is pretty high because it only has 3 parts and each has about 6 or 7 chapters, so there is only about 20 missions and you can play it on several difficulties so you might play it again.

    Gameplay: 9
    Graphics: 9
    Story line: 8.5
    Replay Value: 7.5

  • It was way to short
OK< I played both Max Payne 1 and 2, and my opinion is that 1 is alot better then 2 due to the fact that it was harder and longer.... I did like 2 don't get me wrong but that game is way to short.... I like it what I was Mona for a few times, that was good, and different.... That graphics were good, I'd say better then the first.... I did like the story line, even though it was a love story what I call a chick flick.... But it all comes down to this, it only took me 2 days to clear it, and it was way to easy, I think my friend who never cleared a game yet, would clear this. All and all I give it a 3 star rating, just for the fact that it is a short game play and way to easy....more info

I have Max Payne (the first one) and Max Payne 2 And there are no comparision. Max Payne 2 kicks a** and its graphics are cool. Not to mention the credit song, Late Goodbye by Poets of the Fall! I think that Max and everbody in Max Payne 2 looks different from when they are in Max Payne 1. He's back, and man this in my mind is better than the first
    Pros:
    Excellent graphics
Same ol' gameplay system(That's cool, cuz I love the good ol' style)
    A larger invetory
When you run out of ammo in bullet time, you can do a stylish move, and quickly reload you gun
Bullet time giver you a much better advantage than the last one(You move a bit faster than enemies)
Quick save alowes you to save wherever you want, at any time,(No more starting levels over, ALLRIGHT!!)
    Great Sound effects

    Great plot
One of the best sequals I've ever played, and Max cam to bring alot of payne
    Cons:
Why, oh why didn't they imrove the voice acting
    It's pretty tough(even on detective)
    Guns fire a bit slower
Missing a little bit of what the PC version had
SHORT YO!!! Beat it in 3 days
After playin it on detective, I dunno if I wanna go to higher levels(But, I most likley will)That judges the replay value

After I bought the first one on PS2, it lagged WAY 2 MUCH!! So this time I got it for Xbox, and boy-o-boy, what a definite advantage the Xbox ports have over the PS2. The story kept me going, until the end, and pay very close attention to the end as well. It's a pretty good one. If you loved the first Max Payne, You gotta pick this one up. If you didn't like the first max Panye, I seriously don't know if you would like it or not, cuz there both somewhat the same, In this case, you don't have to wait for the 3rd time to be charmed, but I hope Max Payne will continue and get better and better.

    Peace...more info

  • Love hurts.
Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne is a good game, but its not a five star one. The first Max Payne was even better than this for a few reasons. One of the reasons is the gameplay was unique at the time, and it was the first game that had bullet time, and argubly the only game that didnt use bullet time as a gimmick (i.e. Dead to Rights and Enter the Matrix). Another one of the reasons was the storyline was better. This time the gameplay just doesent feel as fresh either. Its still a fun game though. I'll tell you about the positives now that i've got the negatives out of the way. The gameplay, while not as fresh, is still fun and this is one of the best action games around. The storyline also has interesting plot twists. The bullet time is still here, and its better than ever. It also has pretty good graphics. Its short, but its good while it lasts. You can probably beat it in a weekend rentle. If you were a fan of the first game(like me), you will enjoy this game. If you werent a fan, you wont like this. Its a good action game, and one of the most intense. Check it out. Play the first one first though....more info
  • Short, Sweet, and Brillant
Amazing Game! I thought it was very bold to spin a love story in a shooter but it works. The graphics are WAY improved in Payne 2 and the plot is cool film noir. The developers have added sniper missions and escort missions for variety. Yes the game is short BUT I haven't enjoyed a game this much in a long long time. By the way you get to play as mona!...more info

  • no words to describe the beauty of the game
god dam,i have never played the game like max payne 2.when i played max payne,i liked it very much, even the story was so thrilling and it was a blockbuster game and have created a bench mark,no doubt about it,but the sequence "MAX PAYNE 2:FALL OF MAX PAYNE",is orsom. The most likable thing about this game is that it makes the user attach with it.u will find urself emotionally attached, during playing the game when max payne falled in love with MONA SAX,u would find urself as max payne romancing with mona sax.At last when she died u will find tears in ur eyes. The second thing about this game is that, its intense story line up and music that makes u in a thrill ride. The music is so good while playing different levels specially after the level of part 2: blowing up,the music with mona sax in level "out of the window" is chilling and when she finds max payne got shot.i recommend everybody to purchase this game and yes if ur not familiar with max payne u should also go for "max payne".the graphics on havoc engine r very nice, and lightening effects are
wonderful. In the previous version the remedy had used max-r engine ,but this time they have used havoc physic engine and u can find the difference in both the things....more info
  • Maxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx!
I'm getting sick of saying things like. Bullcrap and all that. This time I'm gonna give you the low down about this game. The things that I like about this game is that it has a good story that would make you play this game all night, graphics have changed for the better, I'm glad that Max no longer looks more like Jim Carry. I mean he looks stupid aspecially when it comes to the sad and intense senses. This game was hard because well I haven't tryed it cause I was bragging about how the game sucks. Once my friend came over and brought the game I did the last level and beat it. And when my cousins came over and beat for them two times in a row. At that time it took me almost a day to finish. But when I rented this game it entertained me, which made me play till 3:00 in the morning but it was because I knew want to do cause I played the first. I didn't care that Part 3 on chapter 8 is the last level of the game. Its just one chapter missed so whats the big deal. I'm getting the game for XMAS for Xbox. So please cut this game some slack. I used to be just like you when my friend got the Getaway. Once I watched him play it I thought it stunk, but when I got it I loved it, I would play it all the time. So maybe the reason your saying all this is because that you never tryed it, so try it You'll love it....more info
  • noir. Full of noir. Noir-tastic.
If you played Max Payne, and I'd highly recommend you do before MP2, you'll find MP2 to be just about as good a continuation of the first game as you could want.

I'd recommend playing Max Payne first, simply because many of the same characters make appearances in MP2, and the development of their characters is, in many cases, a continuation from their appearances in the first game.

From a gameplay perspective, Max Payne 2 is more of a continuation of Max Payne than a really "new" game. Bullet Time has been improved, and becomes a more interesting experience in itself than the relatively simplistic shoot-dodging of the first game. You'll also play as characters other than Max, which normally would be really disorienting, but fits within the structure of the game.

I've heard some people complain about the revisiting of environments throughout the game - you'll come back to the same locations several times - but it doesn't feel "lazy" to me. Every time you revisit an area, either it has changed, or your perspective of it has. The areas are never the same twice through, and as a result, it feels more like an evolving place, than a series of "levels".

There's not really a whole lot of other "noir" games out there, and though the over-noir atmosphere may be a turn-off for some, it's one of the things I love most about the series. Max Payne 2 is an excellent shooter, with an excellent story, oozing with atmosphere. Great stuff....more info

  • Max Payne 2 - the makings of greatness
Max Payne on the PC was one of the craziest games I've ever played. I still play it once in a while for nothing more than its all out gunning madness. It truely was a visceral experience from front to finish, which came all too soon. That is probaly my biggest gripe with Max Payne 2 is that it is also somewhat short. Though, there is greatness to be found in this game. The is depth to be found in it's simplicity. The run and gun tactics make for one intense experince that you will easily want to relive. Graphically, Max Payne 2 on the xbox is pretty sweet. There are no reflective effects such as the ones found on the PC and sacrifices have been made in the explosion department, but its likely you wont notice. The game looks and plays too good to complain. The story is deep and lost me on a couple occassions, still this made me want to replay those levels. No matter what your reason, you will want to revisit this game even after beating it quickly the first go around. Xbox shooter fans, do yourselves a favor and buy this game. It is one heck of an experience offering some of the best graphics, rag-doll physics, and gameplay around. Highly recommended....more info
  • Waaaay better than expected
This is a tremendously underrated game. I received it as a gift -- I'm not sure I would have purchased it if left to my own devices. I would have missed out on one of the most engrossing and coolest video games I've ever played.

Everyone seems to be into the non-linear games and "hundreds of hours", etc., etc., but what games of that nature lack is plot. There's a lot to be said for a good story, with good characters, and most games don't offer that these days. Max Payne 2 plays (and reads) like a very dark graphic novel, with an excellent cast and some cool turns in the plot. It's a movielike experience, with some weight to the emotions evoked -- grief, remorse, anger/revenge, love, and the confusion that results when that love isn't with whom you expect, and with someone you're unable to trust. It also incorporates some very cool, one might even say "trippy" nightmare scenes.

On top of all that, the game not only provides a welcome break from all those 1st person shooters (you play in the 3rd person), but it includes its vaunted matrix-like "bullet-time" to great advantage. Simply one of the coolest games I've ever played. I'd say it took me about 12 hours to complete it, and I liked the game so much, I did it in two days! Beating the game also unlocks other play modes, so I imagine I'll be wading back in......more info
