Customer Reviews:

  • Still one of the best acid fighters there is ...
A great proton pump inhibitor. Every patient is different but in my experience good old Prilosec is often a fantastic choice. Patients don't need a prescription to buy it and it's been on the market so long that it's proven to be safe and reliable. Based on my own clinical knowledge it works at least as well as Nexium and many of the other competing PPIs. Highly recommended for all heartburn and acid reflux sufferers. If you try it and it doesn't work for you, move onto the more expensive scrips; but try this one first! ...more info
  • Pricey
Prlosec is a great product and I use it every day. However watch what you pay. Even before shipping costs you can find the 42-tablet package for under $25 -- at Target for instance....more info
  • Can live w/out it
I been taking Prilosec for about 10 years now. Once a day every morning 1/2 hr before breakfast. Prilosec allows me to be able to eat foods that I was never able to eat before due to cronic acid reflux. Amazon price is great and the auto delivery offers 15% off which is great.

  • The only thing that works for me!
I have been a Prilosec user for about four years now. In the past, I would do the 2 week recommended period, then stop for a couple of weeks, and continue that cycle. My acid reflux never got any better except on the days I took the Prilosec. The day I would stop it would be right back. Finally, I found out that most people take it as a maintenace medication, so I started taking it once a day without fail and my acid reflux was finally gone forever! I used to wake up all night long with severe esophageal pain, sometimes vomiting right in bed from all the acid. It was such a nightmare. I would end up taking a half bottle of tums which still wouldn't work, and sleep sitting up. I tried every over the counter medication out there with no relief at all until Prilosec. It truly is a miracle drug. For those of you out there with acid reflux, don't suffer any longer! Try this and give it about 3 days to start working, and you will be able to turn your sleep and your life around. Amazon often has specials such as spend $49 on groceries (this qualifies) and get $10 off your order. By all means, double up on Prilosec and do this.... I am now 2 years acid reflux free! It's not so bad, if I miss a day now, I don't suffer at all....more info
  • The best OTC acid reflux med on the market
I've been taking Nexium for the past few years, but suddenly my insurance company has decided they don't want to cover it. The only choice I have is to take Prilosec OTC. It's by far the best acid reflux medication on the market, although it's nowhere near as effective as Nexium. If you must buy a medication of this type, Prilosec OTC is your best bet....more info
  • Know the difference between PPIs, H2 blockers and Antacids
Prilosec is the oldest of the Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) on the market. So, it has a loooooong history, and to my knowledge a safe history. As for me, I take comfort in a drug that has a long safe history, and that is why I like Prilosec. Also, for me, the side effects occurred in the first few days, but then wore off. I still have minor gas problems, but there may be an anti-gas OTC drug available for that, I don't know yet. One thing I learned is that it is helpful to know the differences between an Antacid (e..g. Tums, Rolaids, etc.), a PPI (e.g. Prilosec, the actual drug name being "omeprazolel") and an H2 blocker (e.g. Pepcid, the actual drug name being "famotidine"). All three work differently from each other and have different side effects. A pharmacist or your doctor should be able to tell you the differences. All I know is that an antacid is simply a huge dose of calcium carbonate that works immediately to reduce the acid already in the stomach. That is why you feel immediate relief, albeit one which lasts only one or two hours; and come 4 am you feel the bottom of your esophagus on fire again. PPIs and H2 blockers instead go through your bloodstream and eventually (that is why it takes much more time than an antacid) alter the acid producing mechanisms (pumps?) in your stomach. I have Barrett's Esophagus (loosely defined as a more advanced condition of GERD), and my understanding is that PPIs are better for this condition. The point is, if you know more about your condition and the differences between Antacids, PPIs and H2 blockers, you will save yourself an immense amount of trouble and time. For example, if you find a PPI such as Prilosec ain't working for you, then it will probably be the case that other PPIs are not going to work for you either, since their base chemical formulation works in a similar way. Ergo, switch to an H2 blocker and see what happens. If both PPIs and H2 blockers give you unbearable side effects, then you probably have to go through the entire laundry list of PPIs and H2 blockers out there. Good luck....more info
  • Best med for problem, packaging--the pits.
I have a hiatal hernia...and have been taking this daily for a number of years now, started back in the days when this was a prescription item. Couple of weeks ago I forgot to take one for two days, and yep, basic problem w/hernia returned.

The only problem with this product is the packaging which I noticed Consumer's Guide picked up on last month. It'll GIVE you a stomach ache trying to get down to the pill. Doesn't anyone at Prilosec have to take a pill out of the foil packaging themselves and see they have problems???

But still, the greatest medication....more info
  • Very Possibly Your Best Value
We switched to Prilosec because buying this OTC product cost us less than the deductable we'd pay for prescription reflux medication. We stayed with it because it works as well as any of the prescription medications we've tried, if not better.

If you do not have health insurance, this is the ONE to take since the prescription medications cost anywhere from around $90.00 - $150.00 a month. Of course, Consult Your Physician First before switching to what we consider a very sensible alternative. You may be able to afford the light bill after all.

If you are insured, you may wind up saving $10.00 or more a month depending on your prescription deductable. $120.00 a year that you could spend on the tasty Italian cuisine you can now eat because it does not cause reflux. That alone makes it good purchase for us....more info
  • I don't know about other people, but...
This medicine did not work for me at all. I got all the side effects of itchiness all over the body, headaches, backaches, abdominal pains, without any improvement on my heartburns. I used this medicine for a month and my chronic heartburns got even worse that I could not even sleep at night. My doctor finally switched my medicine to Prevacid, which worked a lot better for me. I bought so many packs of Prilosec (I had to take them twice a day for 2 months) and now it's going useless....more info

Prilosecotc is the best acid reducer available. I have tried tums for years and they didnt help. I asked my doctor about prilosec and he gave me samples. Dont worry if you forget a day of taking your medication, I have, Prilosec Otc will still let you have your favorite foods everyday....more info
  • Works as well as the expencive prescriptions
Many people have something called a Hiatal hernia and don't even know it.
A type of hernia where the stomach pushes up through a hole in the diaphragm
muscle preventing it from closing causing acid to reflux. It takes an upper
    endoscopy to confirm it.
This works just like the rest of the prescription medications by reducing
    the acid.
I have been taking it for 2 years (I have a Hiatal hernia). I can eat
anything I want without problem. The only possible side effect is a
cardboard taste in my mouth at times (not even sure its related to the
    Prilosec)

  • Works for me
I can add my name to the list of people for whom acid reflux used to be an ongoing nightmare- sometimes literally. It meant having to eat exceedingly slowly, being careful not to bend over or move too soon after eating, not eating spicy food, not eating to close to bed time, and still, sometimes waking up feeling like I'd swallowed shards of glass. My doctor diagnosed acid reflux, and prescribed Ranitidine, generic for Zantac. Zantac is over the counter, but I needed it in prescription strength. Because it was an ongoing condition, I had to go back to my doctor, sit in the office, pay a copay, etc., all just to have my doctor ask, "Still got it?" and write me another script. I had to take Ranitidine twice a day, and it didn't always work.

Since my doctor suggested I give Prilosec a try, I've been completely symptom free- except for when I forget to take it. i usually don't realize that I've forgotten until sometime after lunch when that old familiar fire creeps up my chest and I replay my morning. Inevitably, it there was some change in my routine, and I forgot to take my magic pill. And if I forget to stock up, all I need to do is walk into the nearest pharmacy.

I don't know if Prilosec will work for you, but if you're suffering from fire in your belly, I'd certainly recommend asking your doctor about it.

I just have two negative comments:

    1. As stated by another reviewer, the packaging on this stuff is really excessive, and I second that reviewer's withholding of one star as a result. I like being able to keep a few emergency pills in my wallet, but that's the only good reason I can see to have each pill individually wrapped in foil. And when you buy the big box, it contains three individually packaged small boxes. If a bottle with some cotton works for asprin, why not Prilosec?

    2. This isn't the company's fault, but it's something those who depend on should be very aware of: This drug is not available without a prescription in some countries, so make sure you bring a good supply when traveling abroad....more info

  • I wish I didn't need this stuff
As an OTC, my pharmacist said this was the best "acid reducer" available. I am thrilled to find this product available online for a much more reasonable price than I can find even at Walmart! I highly recommend prilosec to anyone with GERD: taken regularly (I have to take two tablets each day when I am treating my arthritis), I am symtom free. Outstanding! I would give this product five stars if the manufacturer would stop wasting so many resources packaging it!...more info
  • Great for Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease (LPR) too!

  • could heartburn and acid be things of the past ???
IMPORTANT NOTE: PLEASE READ DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE USING

Prilosec OTC saved the day for me on numerous occasions when I had heartburn. This drug also fights acid in your stomach; and that's a big help! The tablets are easy to swallow and you should use them before any expiration date printed on the outside of the purple box.

My one complaint is that Prilosec takes one to four days for it to give you the full effect. Although they say that some people get full relief in one day, it took me a couple of days to get the full effect. If you must have total relief from your stomach trouble right away then you need to choose another drug. This does disappoint me so I will take off one star to make this a four star review.

Of course, if you have any questions about this drug that aren't addressed on the outside package then you should consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Overall, Prilosec worked for me and I hope you get relief from it. It isn't for everybody because it can take one to four days for people to get the "full effect;" but it does help many, many people.

    Four stars.

  • Excellent Product.
I had severe Acid Reflux/Heartburn usually requiring me to take multiple antacids throughout the day. Some days I would consume as much as 8000mg of calcium carbonate a day. With prilosec OTC one pill a day does the job. Enchiladas or fried foods it makes no difference. The burn is gone.

I take this in combination with Aloe vera juice. The prilosec keeps the acid at bay, and the Aloe vera juice helps my esophagus to heal....more info
  • Effective non prescription acid reflux medication
This drug is very effective against acid reflux and GERD without need of more expensive prescription drugs. It is a Proton pump inhibitor and works very well to control chronic heartburn. Prilosec may take a few days to be effective and is not taken periodically but every day for 14 days. The effectiveness is dramatic. In most cases there is no heartburn for an extended period after recommended dosage. Check with a Doctor before use to rule out a serious problem, and you may be advised to use this to control your symptoms as I was. ...more info
  • Prilosec (Omeprazole) Works - Period!
For those that suffer with frequent heartburn or have frequent instances of gastric reflux, Prilosec is a literal lifesaver.

Stomach acid is strong stuff (pH of 1), and belongs in the stomach, not in the esophagus, where it can cause burning of the esophageal lining (hertburn). If this happens frequently, the esophagus can be badly damaged. Gastro-esophageal Reflex Disease (GERD)can also cause severe erosive damage to the teeth if stomach acid is burped into the mouth frequently. The tooth enamel is literally eroded away, and teeth become very sensitive and permanently damaged.

To save your teeth and esophagus, Prilosec has come to the rescue. Prilosec is a former prescription product in a class of medicines called proton pump inhibitors. This means that the effect of Prilosec is to decrease stomach acid production. This is also beneficial for treatment of stomach ulcers, which need a minimal acid environment to heal.

Prilosec is taken once a day for 14 days in a typical course (thus, it is generally packaged in groups of 14 tablets). Most people have considerable relief beyond the 14 day course. It is not a product to take for immediate (within minutes) treatment of heartburn. The insert on the box states it takes at least a day to 4 days to reach its full effect. Each person will vary in terms of relief and how long the relief lasts.

Prilosec is a very good medicine for the treatment of GERD. It is in the same class as Prevacid, so if Prilosec gives you undesirable side effects, try Prevacid and the side effects may be lessened.

  • Relief from a unusual problem
As it turns out, I have acid reflux as a problem. The symptoms though are unlike any I have ever seen. Basically, if I do not take this medication, I lose the ability to swallow on certain foods and some liquids. The food would get stuck and the only relief was for it to come back out. I went to 2 specialists in the gastro field and neither of them have seen this before. Fortunately the last one was able to prescribe this product and I have been fine since. This medication is a life saver.......more info

  • A Lifesaver!
As my acid reflux worsened over the years, I made the usual progression from antacid tablets, to Pepcid AC, and eventually to prescription medications like Prevacid and Nexium. Prevacid works great but it still requires a prescription and Nexium caused side effects in me. Once Prilosec was offered over the counter I gave it a try and was very impressed. After a week or two of taking it every day, I was able to decrease the dosage to the point where I only take it as needed now. Once I feel heartburn starting, or I eat something guaranteed to give me heartburn, I just take one of these and its gone in about 30 minutes...and when I say gone I mean gone for 10-12 hours.

I highly recommend this product to anyone who suffers acid reflux or chronic heartburn.

  • If you have acid reflux, you should try this.
This is one of the top money-making drugs of all time, and for good reason. It works. I used to have pretty bad acid reflux. I would chew Pepcid Complete (which is an antacid drug combined with a base to neutralize acid) after every meal, as if they were after-dinner mints. Now, I just take Prilosec once a day, and now I almost never suffer from heartburn, and when I do, it is not as bad as it used to be. Trust me on this. This drug works differently than Pepcid or Zantac (I have a Ph.D in biology), so if those drugs don't work for you, don't be afraid to give this a try....more info

  • The best OTC prodcut available.
I have tried Tums, Pepcid AC, Zantac 150, and Alka-seltzer. Often all in the same day. Always my acid reflux and stomach trouble came back in just a few hours.

This is the ONLY non Rx medicine I have found that truely works and lasts for 24 hrs. Yes, it seems expensive. However Rx products such as Aciphex and Protonix are over $100 per month.

The reason this works is because most Acid reducers merely try to dilute acid that already exists in the stomach. Prilosec, being an PPI actully turns off some of the pumps that pour acid into the stomach, effectively reducing the caustic stuff....more info
  • It's a better life with the use of prilosec
I use to, like many, wake up in the middle night grabbing my chest in pain, not being able to sleep. I started taking this and life is better. This is going to sound foolishly irresponsible, but now, I eat whatever I want and still be fine when I'm sleeping. Whatever parts of my body (and figure) may be deteriorating but as far as heartburn goes, i don't feel a thing.

I've been taking this for over 2 years now. I know the box says you should stop after a few weeks, but I have no plans for that (and my doctor said it was fine). It does take a few days, like the box says for the medicine to work, but once you are on the regular, it doesn't matter anymore. Also, I take it at the evenings, right before i go to sleep. I think you're suppose to take it in the mornings, but evenings/nights work too, for me at least.

I have gradually tried to go to a cheaper generic version of the prilosec (the back of the box list the same thing!) but for some reason, whether it is illogical or psychological, i feel that the prilosec brand is by far the best and worth the extra money. My suggestion is the check out ebay where you can get it for about 2/3 of the listed price here on amazon or your local store.

One last thing, if this applies to you - there seems to be some sort of coating the the prilosec pills. With the generic ones, i can taste the chalking of it, meaning it starts to break up once you put it in your mouth, leaving you with that nasty taste until you grab your cup of water. But the prilosec, it is dry and you have a few seconds to sallow.

  • The best treatment for major heartburn :-)
I use this in Australia under the name Losec. It's only available by prescription. However, one day while in the States, I needed a second pill (I usually take only one a day) and they were back in the room. I went to Ralphs and picked this up. It's identical and therefore works just as amazingly. If you really suffer from true heartburn and GERD, try over the counter medications first, and then if unsuccessful, see your physician and see what they have to say. This medication is a true lifesaver. I can't describe what the pain can be like if that acid begins to rise into your upper chest and throat. It kills, but this tames it and I cannot litterally live a comfortable life without it. Only take one a day (although admittedly depending on something you ate or whatever, you may need a second one later in the day). This is the best stuff around....more info

  • Works but not without bad side effects
I have really bad acid reflux, and this works very well for it, but the side effects are almost not worth the benefits.

Ever since I've been taking Prilosec OTC, I've experienced extreme weight gain that I cannot lose, excessive uncomfortable gas and bloating almost constantly, and a generally upset stomach.

I tried to stop using Prilosec for a few weeks and the symptoms went away. I felt so much better, no gas or bloating, my stomach felt great, and I started to lose weight. Unfortunately the acid reflux was too unbearable so I had to return to Prilosec, and the symptoms came back immediately and I gained the back weight I lost plus some.

My experience has been verified by many other people on Prilosec who went through the same thing. I can't wait to find something that works as an alternative....more info

Each person will vary in terms of relief and how long the relief lasts.
