Customer Reviews:

  • Astounding
I certaily won't be using that C*lph*lon brand again! After two or three of the aforementioned brand's pans non-stick surface fizzled out in less than 2 years, I decided it was time for a change. This pan is phenomenal. I use PAM for cooking omelettes, potatoes, and even burgers and they come out great. It has a great feel to the handle which remains cool, it's easy to manage due to the professional thumb detent in the handle, and the aluminum clad bottom heats very evenly while remaining durable. What a great buy. ALl of my cookware will be replaced by Scanpan products as needed... ...more info

Absolutely the finest piece of cookware we've ever owned. I'd recommend this product to anyone....more info
  • Overrated and Not So Non-stick Pan
We got a large sauce pan, 1 small and 1 medium size fry pans.

I was very excited the first time we got our Scanpans. I read about the new technology surrounding this product that supposedly to be non-stick for many years. Now, we only have the big sauce pan left. We have to throw away the 2 fry pans.

To give it some credit, they lasted a couple of years before it started to peel off (actually not peeling off like a teflon. It starts to have some tiny holes on the surface which grows in size as you use it. Then finally when we see the metal base, we got worried that pieces of those non-stick surface gets to our food that we decided it's time to get rid of it). The non-stick properties starts to wear off before it lasted a year.

    Pros:
-heavy and thick to distribute heat evenly
-Handles are oven resistant so you can actually use it to cook in the oven
    -Well made, great construction. Durable.

    Cons:
-Not as non-stick as teflon. And non-stick properties continue to deteriorates as you use it. Approximately a year.
-Not a good value. For the price, it should last much longer.
    -Not for induction cooking....more info
  • Great non-stick product
This can easily become your primary cooking fry pan. While I wish the sides were a little bit taller to reduce splatter - it does what it is supposed to do with even heating across the bottom....more info
  • Fantastic pans
These pans are fantastic, well worth every penny.

They have great heat distribution and the non-stick surface is easy to clean. You can even put them in the oven to finish off that omelet you're making. The handle doesn't get hot and is easy to hold on to.

    In short: highly recommended....more info
  • It's cookware heaven
I bought the smaller scanpan and loved it so much I decided to splurge on the larger size too.

Here's why I love these: Nothing sticks! Eggs slide around like two year olds on roller skates. You can brown foods but it's hard to burn anything. You swipe it with a paper towel and it's clean. It sits flat on my cooktop and heats very evenly. No hotspots or uneven dips. I throw it in the dishwasher and under the broiler and use metal utensils on it, and it still looks like brand new.

The only negative is the price, but it's worth it when you consider that it's practically indestructible. ...more info
  • Try it once and you will be hooked!
I am an avid cookware collector. Some women buy handbags, for me it is cookware! I have tried almost everything. First, I bought only this frypan and the grillpan. Both were excellent! So I ordered almost everything else that they made, There were no hot spots, meat and fish browned beautifully and clean up was a breeze. I cooked Japanese, Chinese, French and Italian foods and everything turned out great. My dinner guests have gone out to buy Scan pan too! I bought a wok for my mom and she too says that this is the best pan she ever used. I tried other brands that sounded much more impressive than Scanpan, like those made with diamonds and other non-stick that they say you can use with Metal utensils....Le Cr**.....Cal** Swiss D**..and much more. They sounded good, but when it actually came to cooking with them, they just did not live up to my expectations. I had to give away all my other Non-Scanpan cookware, as I could not fit anymore items in my kitchen! I only wish they make a flat griddle too. I am hooked on Scanpan cookware....more info
  • I'm impressed! Wow!
Although I just received my pan a couple of days ago and haven't tested for wear as yet, It is the best nonstick pan so far that I have ever used. The heat is very even and it cooks like a dream. FINALLY a good non stick pan.
Hopefully it will last. I think a lot of the problems with peeling that people have are caused by letting them sit on the burner too long on high heat without having food in them.
    UPDATE ONE YEAR LATER:
Happy to report that this pan (unlike other non-sticks) is holding up beautifully with frequent usage.
I never preheat it on high, and rarely crank the heat up over medium high unless the pan is full.
I have a larger version that is holding up as well.
    UPDATE March, 2009:
Still loving this pan and it is holding up beautifully!! I really think if one is willing to take a couple of precautions that these pans will last a long long time....more info
  • Scan Pan is the one!
    Hi,
I had been reading about scanpan on all the cookware forums I browse and it had consistently good reviews. Also I am not a fan of nonstick as I find that, ease apart, food just doesnt taste good cooked on NS.
When I read abt Scan pan, I thought it would be good to try a piece. Well, I did taking advantage of this deal on Amazon!! I am happy to say it is the wisest decision I made.

I cooked eggs in them and washed the pan and found no trace or smell of the eggs! I usually hate the smell that you get from frying eggs, so I was pretty pleased. Then I sauteed veggies and that was great tasting and cleaned up real quick. No elbow grease.
I think this pan is a great buy. The one piece we shd really invest in for eggs.

    Reasons
    1. does not stick
    2. u can wash it when warm whcih you cannot wth NS
    3. u can use metal utensils
    4. you still get some browning

do you want any more?? well, will come up with some after a while, I guess:))

To sum up this is a great introduction to the world of scanpan.

  • excellent choice!
My sister turned me on to the Scanpan line three years ago. We are slowly replacing all of our fry and saute pans with this line. I have used professional cookware for many years and am tired of having things stick and burn if not watched every single second. With the Scanpan, even at high temperatures, searing meats is a simple procedure. No fat cooking is easy and the cleanup - simply rinse with hot water while the pan is still hot - is just short of a miracle. The ONLY thing to consider is that they are heavy. Not as heavy as cast iron but they you definitely get what you pay for - a good quality pan. I dropped my big fry pan and sacrificed my toe the first time. The second time I let it fall to the floor, the rim was dented a little bit, but it did Not hamper its cooking abilities. They are awesome for making sauces such as hollandaise, bernaise, reductions and great on gravies. You can use metal utensils with them but I prefer silicone for just about everything except when I am using cast iron. The heat evenly distributes even on the nastiest of electric stoves. They are definitely worth the investment. After three years of HEAVY use they still look and cook like new. Enjoy! ...more info
  • Durable, non-stick, good heat distribution
I've used this pan for two years now and it looks brand new. The cooking surface is unblemished and remains as "non-sticky" as the day I received the pan. This is with use of metal utensils and many trips through the dishwasher.
Yes, it really is non-sticky. Fried eggs are easy to flip, and scrambled eggs are easy to clean up.
The heat distribution is excellent, as you can see if you fry a pancake on it - - the golden color will be smooth and perfect, no dark or light areas.
It does take a long time to heat up the pan due to the huge slab of metal under the cook surface. It's worth it.

  • Survived the campfire/sand box test!
I ordered a ScanPan omelet pan about a year or so ago, and it quickly became my favorite. Last fall, it disappeared, and I figured that one of my children must have put it away in the wrong cupboard. A week or so later, I was walking up by our orchard, where we have a sandbox and a firepit for cook-outs and camp-outs. To my dismay, I spied my ScanPan IN THE SANDBOX! After retrieving it, to my horror, I noticed that the bottom was black! I realized that my kids must have mistaken my NEW pan for the old omelet pan that I had given them for a "camping pan"! I just KNEW that the pan was ruined, but figured I'd run it through the dishwasher for a cycle, and see if it could be at least cleaned off! To my delighted surprize, the pan...not only came pretty clean (bottom is still discolored, but charring came off), but also had retained it's non-stick qualities!!! The first omelet that I tried slid right out of the pan, as if it were new! I am completely sold on Scan Pan, and plan on purchasing a whole new set!...more info
  • you'll think it's great UNTIL the non-stick coating fails
When these pans are new, they're wonderful to cook with, but within a few years, they're expensive junk. The coating fails. My enameled cast iron has proven much more resiliant (and, short of cooking eggs, can rival non-stick) and for true non-stick, my Caphalon non-stick skillet is still going strong - and I got it at the same time as I got my scan pan. ...more info
  • The Delightful Scanpan
I had owned a small Scanpan fry pan for over 10 years, and though its titanium surface had discolored slightly, its nonstick properties remained undiminished. Two years ago I added this 12.5 inch fry pan, and it is a delight just like its littler but older brother. Perfect for anything that needs the extra room... bacon strips, omelets, fish, pancakes. Great for reductions, though the low sides can make splashover a factor if one isn't careful. The base will take a tiny circle of heat and distribute it evenly all over the pan. I've been using this pan several times a week and its quality is as spectacular today as the day it came out of the box. I have since upgraded much of my cookware to products from the Scanpan Professional line, and my only regret is that the 12.5" fry pan didn't come from that series, as then it would match the rest! Scanpans are tough, it is titanium after all, but take good care of them anyway. Don't use excessive heat, don't use them to store food, don't put them in a dishwasher, don't leave them to soak in the sink... clean them straight away. Treat your Scanpans like any fine cookware and they should last a lifetime....more info

I love, love this pan. I have used it over and over. It cooks perfectly with little or no fat, and clean up couldn't be easier. • The greatest pan
I've never fallen in love with a pan till now. This gets hot fast, stays hot and even, nothing sticks to it (incredibly easy to clean) and totally non-toxic. It's the best thing for stir-fry I've ever used, and anything else. I'm going to get some other sizes.

I looked for a while till a friend told me about this. I'm not sure why I never found it before. It should be everywhere. ...more info
  • Wonderful pan
We have used this pan on a daily basis in our kitchen for over two years. It is truly non-stick, and cleans very quickly and easily. I never have to use oil or non-stick spray in the pan (the manufacturer recommends not using non-stick spray).

At the first of the year, our pan's coating started flaking (probably because I used a steak knife on it, whoops). I contacted ScanPan by email and received a response the same day for where to send it. I received a new pan back within about a month, for nothing more than the cost of mailing them the damaged pan. They honor their lifetime warranty!

The only confusing thing I have found is that the directions alternately say it is or is not dishwasher safe. We put ours in the dishwasher, and (unless that's what caused the flaking) we have had no problems....more info
  • Warranty a Joke-Don't Waste Your Money
I really liked the idea of non stick that could brown and didnt scratch. And it worked great-for 2 months. Then I noticed little bubbles. I called the company and the surly customer service person said that I would need to ship the pan to them, they would take a look at it and then if they deemed it a manufacturing problem-they would replace it. Of course I had to pay to ship my old pan, the new pan, and a handling charge. Forget it. My cheap nonstick cookware lasted longer than the scan pan....more info
  • Perfect eggs for a lifetime
I feel smart every time I pull this pan out. There simply isn't a more durable nonstick fry pan than this. I can use metal utensils! Put it in a 500 degree oven! Wash it in the dishwasher! (Which I don't, since it's so easy to clean). It also has a flat, reinforced bottom that completely eliminates wobbliness. Although it's expensive, ScanPan is a lifetime investment, and it makes the flimsy Teflon pans that you have to replace every ten years seem wasteful....more info

  • SCANPANS Nonstick uses PTFE
Unfortunately, I was very disappointed to find out the ScanPan pots and pans are made from PTFE. PTFE is known to be unhealthy, a carcinogen, and I would never want my food to touch that surface, especially when heated. So I had to return the product to the manufacturer. ScanPan wasn't that helpful either. Even their advertising tries to hide the fact that their products are mde from PTFE, the same as Teflon. But when you confront them on it, they had no choice, but to acknowledge that problem with their product. If you are concerned about your health, do not use a Scanpan Nonstick product. You can buy many other healthy alternatives such as pure Titanium coated aluminum cookware, stainless steel, ceramic coated iron (Le Creuset), which are sold on Amazon. Go for Healthy Eating! And stay far away from ScanPan products!...more info

  • Underwhelmed
After extensive research before our wedding we decided to register for Scanpan products to fill out our cookware. Just over three years later the three pieces we use almost daily are all failing. Two fry pans and a saucepan all have extensive bubbling or breaks in the nonstick. Particularly irritating is the saucepan - we frequently put a steamer basket in it for vegetables and the stainless legs (with rounded, polished feet) appear to have worn a circle in the nonstick. This was evident at a year ago or earlier. Frankly not worth the premium price. When we replace them we'll probably go with conventional cookware and give up on non-stick....more info
  • Scanpan made from PTFE which causes cancer
The ScanPan pots are made from PTFE. PTFE is the chemical name of Teflon. PTFE and Teflon are known to cause cancer in laboratory animals such as rodents. In particular liver and kidney cancer is the most common. So you'd be crazy to cook on PTFE which also by the way emits fumes that kills birds. Stay far away from ScanPan pots and pans for you good health. Buy stainless steel or ceramic coated iron or pure titanium coated aluminum pots. Then at least you can feel good about the food you cook....more info

This is absolutely the best pan I have ever owned. (and I have owned many). I've been searching for the best and I think I have found it. I bought this one pan as a test. After using it quite a bit I have ordered a complete set.
Metal utensils can be used on the non-stick surface! You can take it from the burner, remove the contents and then put it under cold water right away to steam any residue from the surface! It does NOT warp when you do this.
It has a very even cooking surface and is unbelievably easy to handle and to clean. Also dishwasher safe and does not have to be 'seasoned'....more info
  • 12" Scanpan
Scanpans are the best non-stick pans available. Ceramic/titanium is just as non-stick as Teflon, but since it's not a coating there is no flaking, and metal utensils are okay to use on it. It even gets seasoned over time, unlike Teflon. Had the 8" pan for a few years and loved it, but now the 12" is the most used pan in the kitchen (it's HUGE)....more info

  • Piece of junk, they all stick after a while.
I've owned several Scanpan products. This fry pan, an 8-inch fry pan and a sauce pan. All stick after being used for a while. After I had problems with the first one I talked to the store I bought it from and to Scanpan. They said to use lower heat and don't use cooking sprays. I followed those instructions and still had problems. I also tried the "restore" using steel wool that's mentioned in the manual without any success.

When they were new they were great, but once they started sticking, they were worse than a regular pan without a non-stick coating. Plus the sellers won't back them up. I tried to return mine under their "Lifetime" warranty, none of the stores selling them would take them back without talking to the distributor first. The distributor never returned my phone calls. Also a major consumer testing magazine that originally gave these a high rating retracted that rating after getting bad feedback from owners. You can read back issues in your library....more info

  • One of the better fry pans
Just purchased this replacement for a 15-year old Scanpan. I was disappointed to see that the thickness of the basic aluminum structure is now significantly thinner than my old pan. The old pan strongly suggested cleaning by putting cold water directly into the hot pan, letting the resultant boiling and steam self-clean it. I used that process with great results. The directions on the new pan omit that recommendation, probably because it's thinner. I rated the old pan 5 stars, but can't give that rating to this lighter construction. Otherwise, the titanium surface is still really scratch resistant (even with metal utensils) and highly non-stick....more info

This is a great pan, totally worth the investment. It will last long and it's the only "non-stick" pan I have had that IS actually non-stick. It's durable and effective. I bought cheap pans over and over again that had peeling surfaces, until I learned my lesson with this one. Only Scanpan from here on out. I've had it for a few years and it's held up well, no peeling.

Addendum: Its now April 2008 and the pan has still not peeled. The non-stick surface is not as strong as it used to be, however. I still still think it was well worth it. It had gotten a lot of use and its a good size for lots of basic cooking....more info

This pan is so durable! We have it about 4 years and there is no sign of any wear! It washes so nicely. When we bought it, it came with metal scrubber to prove that you can clean it with metal with no problem. You need to use tiny bit of oil, but not much. I went on their website to try to buy more when I learned that it uses some teflon inside, but only in temp 500-600 degrees it gets released. So it should not be released in food. For complete purist-time to go back to cast iron or steel. However, I am still using this pan--what can I say? When something works so well, do not replace it! It was worth money we paid for it. I don't understand why this pan is not marketed more. I don't know of better nonstick pan with the same durability. It loves metal brushes and spoons. ...more info

  • Was I the last to find out about Scanpan?!?
SCANPAN IS THE BEST NONSTICK PRODUCT I HAVE EVER USED.

I recently researched and purchased my first Scanpan. Happy Birthday to me! Why haven't I heard of these before? My first use, I made two batches of crepes, one savory, the other chocolate. They were both perfect, tasty, and flawlessly non-stick. I used the savory crepes in a lasagna recipe instead of noodles. Lovely and light lasagna! Better than a dream...

I made crackers out of lowfat grated cheddar cheese, no stick, no burn, just that great crusty-cheese (no-carb!) taste. Since I tend to cook many types of foods that are prone to stick, I'll know exactly how long this non-stick surface integrity remains. I hope it is as long as some other Scanpan bloggers have experienced!

  • Performance subpar and Warranty may be problem
Received the Scanpan as a gift two years ago, and it has been a disappointment. The first year it performed as expected, and I was hopeful for long life with a non-stick surface. Performance deteriorated even with careful use (avoiding any harsh cleaning or scraping). After using only wooden utensils, the pan started to have some peeling, and a great deal of surface-coat bubbling.

Problems can arise from any product, but the real disappointment is with Scanpan's "Lifetime Warranty in the US" - (check out at [...]). Disclaimers negate the "Lifetime" satisfaction claim. If you are not the original purchaser, the warranty is not valid. "SCANPAN products bought at auction or from private persons, including E-bay and similar web sites, are not covered by this warranty." Calling the SCANPAN warranty telephone number was no help. "SCANPAN product claimed as defective under this warranty must be sent post paid to SCANPAN USA ...for inspection and repair or replacement." Since this was a gift, I cannot even verify that any replacement will be covered, and I don't want to pay for postage for something that may not be considered.

Buyer BEWARE! I have no intention of buying anything from this manufacturer....more info

  • You get what you pay for...
I bought this pan on the recommendation of some friends and after other non-stick options I've tried have proved to be less durable than advertised. Time will tell on durability but the fact that the ceramic titanium surface is bonded to the pan rather than applied to the surface should make a difference. It works so well that I can't put butter in the pan when I make crepes, the batter won't stick to itself and I wind up with crepes with holes in them. Eggs come out perfectly. The pan heats evenly and quickly, cleans up easily, looks great, and has a nice heft to the hand - solid without being too heavy. This is an example of getting what you pay for; well worth the price tag. ...more info
  • No rivets & exterior coating make for easy clean up.
Most non-stick pans have two or three metal (non-non-stick) rivets to hold the handle on. Many also have hard-to-clean exteriors. I use my non-stick pan to cook eggs. With my old non-stick pan, eggs stick to those rivets, and sometimes to the outside of the pan as I slide them out of the pan.

This Scanpan is truly non-stick. Eggs don't stick to the inside or the outside. That is the main reason I like this pan: super-easy clean up, inside and out.

I only use this for eggs, and I don't let it get too hot. If it gets too hot, I suspect the coating breaks down into cancer-causing chemicals, which end up in me. So this pan is eggs-only.

My wife, a wiser person, uses a ceramic pan from France - Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron 2-1/4-Quart Saucier Pan, Caribbean. It is ceramic inside and out. It comes closer to non-stick than our other pans, but eggs still stick. Also, it is deeper than the Scanpan, but it is the shallowest pan with ceramic inside and out. My wife says she will trade some clean-up time for cancer any day.

I am still foolishly (perhaps dangerously) attached to my Scanpan. Egg cleanup is magically easy! Of course, to find out if it was the right choice, we shall have to wait for the autopsy....more info
  • Best nonstick pan in existence
Scanpans are the very best nonstick pans in existence, bar none. Nothing compares to it. I will not buy any other ever again. They are that far superior....more info
  • what I've always wanted in a non-stick pan
The pan has a nice heavy yet balanced feel; cooks evenly, and barely sticks when I fry gummy rice. :-) Cleans easily. I would buy more Scanpan products if I could afford it. :-)...more info
  • ScanPan Pot Made From PTFE
Unfortunately, I was very disappointed to find out the ScanPan pots and pans are made from PTFE. PTFE is known to be unhealthy, a carcinogen, and I would never want my food to touch that surface, especially when heated. So I had to return the product to the manufacturer. ScanPan wasn't that helpful either. Even their advertising tries to hide the fact that their products are made from PTFE, the same as Teflon.
  • This is a must have!
I gave up my teflon pans years ago, and suffered through trials with stainless steel and cast iron skillets and disasters with Visionware. I heard about Scanpans on a cooking forum and took a chance on buying this sample pan. Man, oh man! It's so good to be able to cook a simple egg in butter again with no worries about burning or sticking.

Everything the other reviewers say about it is true. It sits flat on my ceramic cooktop and has no hotspots. It cooks evenly. It cleans up like a dream. Nothing, and I mean nothing, sticks or burns. I've used it for a year, two or even three times a day. It still looks like new.

After I use it for breakfast I just swish it clean so it's ready for dinner. At first I was afraid to put it in the dishwasher but got over that pretty quick. After dinner I throw it in the dishwasher. It's gone through the dishwasher every day for nearly a year. Did I mention it still looks like new?

It makes a great gift too! Get it, you'll love it!

edited 10/4/2006 I'm back on Amazon today to buy another one for my son in college. These make fantastic gifts. Everyone I've given them to has raved about them. Mine are now two years old and still look like new. Having good equipment like Scanpans makes cooking downright fun!...more info
  • Meets expectation
After the first few uses the pan seems to be "as advertised". Time will tell as other pans have lost their non-stick quality a little prematurely....more info
  • Disappointed!!!!
Unfortunately, this pan did not live up to it's reputation. With oil, yes it cooks fine, but I am trying to eliminate oil out of my diet. Without it, everything sticks and burns. I felt like a child whose candy is taken away right before they get to put it in their mouth!!!! Sorry, but not what I expected on that end!!!...more info
  • Best non-stick pan ever!
This pan is wonderful! Nothing sticks to it surface-i can fry eggs without oil or butter with no sticking. It is also wonderful for making crepes. The pan is durable-if you make a mistake and use a metal utensil, it does not ruin the pan. I highly recommend this item....more info
