Want to tone your entire body without buying a complete home gym? Check out the Total Gym 1700 Club, which helps you strengthen and sculpt every major muscle group in your body using a single glide board and a few handy attachments. The Total Gym 1700 Club works by making you lift a percentage of your body weight against gravity, making the resistance smooth and fluid. As your strength and conditioning improves, you increase the total resistance by boosting the incline, thus increasing the body weight lifted in the exercise. The Total Gym 1700 Club thus not only works your upper body, but also your lower body, abdominals, and even your cardiovascular system. And by reducing body fat and increasing the proportion of lean muscle mass in your body, the strength training effectively turns up the thermostat so that your body burns calories constantly.

The Total Gym 1700 Club also offers several handy attachments that add a new dimension to your workout: a Pilates bar that helps you improve your range of motion and balance; a weight bar that lets you add up to 75 pounds of additional free weights to intensify your workouts (weights sold separately); dip bars and press-up bars; and an exercise mat to help protect your floor. All it takes to get in great shape is 15 to 20 minutes per day, three to four times a week.

Key Features:

  • Pilates Bar to add a new dimension to your workout by helping you improve your range of motion and balance
  • Dip Bars and Press Up Bars add exercise versatility
  • Exercise mat protects your floor
  • A larger glideboard for workout comfort
  • Wider tower for added stability
  • Auto-lock height adjustment

Customer Reviews:

  • Very Pleased
I had researched "small-footprint" excercise machines for upper body toning and had settled on the Total Gym 1500 as a good unit for me. One reviewer suggested upgrading the the 1700 Club and I'm glad I did. I am very impressed with the additonal quality of the 1700 and my wife is using the Pilates bar (an extra purchase with the 1500). It is the lowest priced Home Gym capable of handling additional weights - although the base unit provides plenty of exercise for me.
We all know that most of these machines end up in garage sales, but I really like the 1700 Club and it does have the extra weight capability if you really need to max out those muscles.
But, it is hardly "small footprint". Totally unfolded it easily takes up an eight foot by two foot space. You will need at least twelve to utilize the Pilate capabilty and some space on each side for arm pulls. I've got it in a spare bedroom and it takes up an entire wall. Also, it weighs a ton, so it would be a pain to fold it up after every session. Not to say it can't be done, but it would be a good part of the workout. Once folded it can slip under a high bed, or in a closet. But out of sight is out of mind (and one step closer to the garage sale).
I bought it for upper-body excercises but was quite surprised at the number of Ab and lower-body exercises that it it capable of. Its easy to do a full body set, and then work on a specific area.

I love it. Its quiet, and easy to use. Its great for toning up, and you can put it on a lower level to get a really good cardio workout....more info
  • Total Gym
Excellent gym for a beginner/intermediate workout program. The infomercials are a little cheesy but it really does what it claims. In just a couple weeks I've completely toned my whole body. I highly recommend this....more info

  • a good home workout but a lot bulkier than advertised
this machine can give you near-gym like quality at home. it's not quite all the way to gym quality because certain parts of the range of motion seem to lose most of their resistance. however it's much better than the other home alternatives on the market. it's very durable and the components are high quality. however, that comes with a drawback as it is not nearly as easy to fold and store as advertised. it's actually quite heavy and bulky and therefore awkawrd to fold, and when folded it's still over 8" and thus can only go under tall beds. it's not possible to store it vertically given it's bulk and moving parts. that said, it's best if you have a dedicated space like a basement area where you don't plan on folding and storing after workouts. but that just begs the question of getting a true gym-quality machine if you're going to commit that much space.

also, i'm not sure which is the "official" total gym given all the ads, models and websites. but from what i've seen i wouldn't recommend getting a model more pricey than this one (you could even drop down a model or two) as it's just more bells and whistles that you're unlikely to use. ...more info
  • Can be used at any age to improve ones health.
I will be 68 in 2009 and have been using my existing Total Gym 1000 for 15 months now. I do 35 minutes of exercise 4 days a week at level 7. I just purchased a Total Gym 1700 at a local sports store yesterday. This is a great machine for any age and the slower you do the exercises the better. This machine has four or five features my Total Gym 1000 does not have and allows a 350 lb. weight limit. I purchased my Total Gym 1000 new a number of years ago but did not use it until recently. I did not realize what I was missing and will not let that happen with the new machine. If you have some health limitations you can work around them with specific exercises ( over 60 exercises ). Try it, you will like it. ...more info
  • very disappointed
The sleeve on one of the stabilizing bars cracked and a plastic ring somewhere under the glideboard broke during my first 5 minutes. I only weigh 130 so my weight had nothing to do with it. The accessories stated that there would be 2 video's included and there are none. The instructions aren't clear to me so they would have been very helpful. I can't find a total gym web page either. I would send it back if the cost wasn't so high but I already spent enough on it. If I would have shopped around here instead of buying online I could have gotten it for $100.00 less than what I paid, which still wouldn't have been worth it but at least I could have easily returned it....more info
  • The all in one great workout machine
I've had my Total Gym almost fifteen years and consider it a all in one machine workout in a small footprint...perfect.
Unfortunately I have current health conditions that make it difficult for me to get low enough to use it properly but friends use it.
It hasn't had problems and if I had to choose only one workout machine, it would be the TG.

  • So Awesome!
I bought this because I live in Minnesota and the winters are horrible. I have skipped on so many workouts because of the cold. I had to get three things this year in order to keep my workout going...One was a Treadmill. Two was a exercise body ball. Now the last thing, this piece of equipment..The total Gym!

I was nervous about purchasing this product because of so many failed home gyms in the past. Would I use it? Is it hard to set up? Is it durable? All those questions ran through my head.

Before I continue, I am a Male, 25 years old, 6ft 3, 215lbs, and average strength. Keep that in mind as you read.

I am getting a great upper-body workout from this machine. I have noticed my back, arms, and chest all have significant gains with the help of this machine.

I am committed to getting healthy this year. If you are, keep in mind, this product will not be the only thing you need to use. I have a treadmill so I can do some cardio, but running on the street/track is more preferred. I have the exercise ball to get some pushups/situps going. I also have WiiFit to add some fun into the routine. I also Ski in the winter and Bike in the summer.

What I mean from that above paragraph is that this product will not change you overnight. It does work and if you combine using this with healthy eating, cardio, and some leg workouts somewhere else, (This machine does come with some leg workouts, but they are not enough for me), then you will see some gains.

This does take up some space...Think roughly 10 feet. Super thin though. This is also pretty heavy to move. I have a room where I just keep it set -up. You can move it if you want to, but I like to keep it out so I remind myself to use it.

Your hands smell like rubber from the padding after you are done. I suggest using some workout gloves.

I had one minor part break during shipping. I will call the supplier and get a new part. It was a plastic knob that goes over the locking mechanism. I can still use the machine without this part, but it's annoying trying to adjust the height without this knob.

This machine is definitely worth the price. I am very satisfied. I have noticed some gains, but I also do a variety of exercises with the above mentioned items.

I guarantee you will not find what you are looking for if this is the only thing you work with. You need to combine some cardio and some leg work along with healthy eating. However, this mean is a lot more user-friendly than free weights and waiting in gym lines...Or in my case, not wanting to go outside to my car....more info
  • We like it!
The Product is easy to use and easy to set up. Although if you have the room I would suggest leaving it up all the time. You get a variety of work outs with this machine, I'm a stay at home Mom, and I like the light resistance training I get from it, and my Husband likes to use it for his upper body work-out, though he still needs to use free weights to keep with his personal work-out goals. I still continue to run besides using the total gym, becuase I didn't feel that my cardio was being taken care of properly. I only have one complaint with the system, I have medium length hair, and while working out, I need to keep it pulled back and tucked under my shoulders, or it becomes caught and pulled. ...more info
  • Nice equipment!

Excellent machine to have a full work out on! I don't think it will replace the gym completely but almost there! Very easy to use and to change between workouts although wen it comes to put it back in the storage I'm kind of lazy so I always have it assembled!

I would Definitely recommend it....more info
  • Great all-around workout machine
I exercise when I have time, I didn't want to pay a fortune, I don't like going to gyms, and my goal is simply to be fit (enough to feel good and be able to haul that couch up the stairs when my friends ask me to help them move). Thus I wanted something efficient, versatile, and of good quality but not too massive--this machine has all these traits. For someone like me, it's great.

Efficient: The idea of using your own body weight to exercise against appeals to me since you don't have to lug around anything more than yourself. I felt that I was getting good workouts after just a few days of using it.

Versatile: There are a lot of interesting exercises you can do to work on any muscle group. A booklet shows you each one in detail and an snap-on flip chart can sit on top of the unit for quick reference. Generally I suggest you follow the recommended exercise programs. They seemed ordered so you don't have to spend much time changing things on the Total Gym between each one. When you do, the transformation is a good way to spend that one minute break they recommend between each exercise--not that it takes anywhere near that to make the changes. One thing I like about this unit is most of the time I only have to pull a knob and raise the back and maybe unhook the sled. (Hint: changing the height also changes the length so don't step hard on the feet of the machine or you'll just end up fighting yourself)

Quality: The construction is of good quality and there are a number of useful attachments that come with this model to allow almost any exercise you can dream up but for the most part you just use the pulleys. My only gripes are: 1) the wing attachment seem a bit loose and so the rail pads slide around causing the wing to bite into the rails. 2) Where the sled hooks to the pulleys is rather cramped and is sometimes difficult to remove.

Not Too Massive: The Total Gym is 8 feet long and 4 feet tall unfolded. It does not fold up very pretty and forget about storing it under a typical bed but it will rest unobtrusively in a corner if you are short on space and can manage to lift the thing. It's not unbearably heavy so much as it is cumbersome to lift and move around. A little dolly will solve this problem nicely. Ideally, though, you don't want to have to unfold it for each workout so find a permanent home for it if you can.

The Total Gym seems best used for light to moderate workouts. You can't achieve REALLY heavy resistance on this thing. You get a maximum of 44% of the sum of your body weight and 75 lbs. For example if you weigh 170 lbs, you are looking at a maximum of about 108 lbs if you supplement it with the free-weight attachment which is included, although you must supply the free weights--75 lbs is the stated limit. I find this is sufficient for a good all-around workout but if that is not enough, you can always add some free weights to your routine.

In summary it's an all around workout machine exercising as many muscles as possible. It's not for body-building. Great for those who just want something to hop on for twenty minutes to an hour a day and feel great afterwards....more info
  • This is a great piece of equipment.
I just recieved it via Fed Ex and set it up, but after just one 15 minute work out, boy did i feel it. Every exercise uses your core muscles, plus the muscles used in the exercise. Its very sturdy and I'm not small guy at 6'2" and 235 lbs. The only complaint I can think of is that it is not as easy to setup as advertised, it took about 30 minutes to get everything just right while reading the instructions. And the rollers under the board dont glide as well as the more expensive ones, but my guess is that once I have used it a bit it will start to glide better. If not I will lube up the rollers a bit. I cant wait to see how things are going after 3 months. If you are thinking about getting one of these, dont wait the three years that I did to get one. Buy yours today!...more info

  • total gym 1700 club
My husband and I have been looking for a "home gym" for almost a year. We have very busy schedules and can not get to a gym. We did not want something "cheap" and finally settled on the total gym 1700 club. We really like this piece of equipment. The only negative is that the clip for the pulley attatchment is very hard to take on and off. When following a video, it is hard to make the switch with out having to pause the video. Other than that we have enjoyed the total gym, we feel it is great quality for the price and are starting to see the benefits....more info

  • Total Gym
I am very satisfied with the total gym 1700 club. The set came quickly after ordering even though I elected the free shipping. It was all as advertised plus some. It is easy to set up and use although not as easy as Christy Brinkley demonstrates on TV. Disconnecting the pulley that attaches to the sliding platform could be a little easier and this is done often. It is easy to use and gentle enough for this out of shape guy. I have been using it for a little more than a month and can see and feel the results. ...more info
  • Design Improvement Needed
I found removing the pulley from the glide board almost impossible. The ring on the bottom of the glide board is almost too small to hook and unhook. They make this look easy and indeed it was in the 1500 model. Some fix should be offered for this. Otherwise it's a great little machine...more info
  • Great workout
Total gym 1700 , Amazon had the best price online and gave free shipping, also, i have been working out for 26 years with weights,i love this new workout machine, so smooth and you get a great pump, you will know that you had worked out after using this, that is if you are self motivated like myself. I fully endorse this 1700 club gym combined with free weights and eating a very healthy diet, you can have a great body....more info
  • Great to use
Overall, I really like the design and quality of this machine. However, it is a little difficult to work with the DVD and know what you should be doing. Often if you are following along, your back is to the monitor showing the DVD. I suggest larger pictures that could be posted at the opposite end of the machine from the monitor would be most useful. That being said, this is a great workout home gym and a very good value....more info

Good home gym, good value. Only problem was that it was delivered broken. If I would have been home when it was delivered I would not have accepted delivery because the box was a mess, broken open and filthy. When I opened it, I prayed all the pieces were there. They were but two plastic pieces were broken. I was able to fix/gloo them back together and the gym works fine. I don't know if it left the store in this condition or if was the fault of UPS....more info
  • A Great Workout for the Whole Body - in Half the Time
I've owned an old Total Gym 2000 since 1997 and I can testify to the reliability of this product. After ten years of service, one of the plastic rollers finally developed a defect in it, so I'm going to buy a new Total Gym to replace mine. Other than that, it's been a solid, well-made product and, heck, if you can get ten years out of anything these days, that's nothing to complain about! I expect I'll have my new one even longer....more info
  • So good we bought a second one
This is everything that it was advertised to be. We are generally cautious about items that have "infomercials but this is a terrific exercise machine. Both my wife and I love it. In fact we like it so well that we bought a second one for our second home. We are thinking of getting one for each of our son's families for Christmas....more info

  • Perfect for tone and conditioning
The plain truth..... This is an excellent piece of equipment for toning and conditioning both major and minor muscle groups. It is not a boring workout, and one can quickly feel the results.

What it's not - It's not body building equipment. If you want your muscles to grow then you need traditional weights, etc. It's not a "click of a switch" portable device that "easily" folds up for storage. Ideally, you will want to set it up and leave it up.

What it is - It's a sculpting, stretching, and toning system. It can be used to build strength, (different than bulk), with lower reps/ higher resistance, or as a circuit trainer, high reps/lower resistance, which will also provide some impressive cardiovascular work.

Ideally, the home gym should have something that emphasizes cardio, and something that emphasizes muscular conditioning. The Total Gym handles the latter.

Finally, which one? We purchased the 1700 Club because it offered a higher weight and height capacity for users, and it had the wing attachment, weight attachment, and Pilates bar. I certainly could not justify a more expensive model, and the model below would probably be just as effective....more info
  • totally alright
Been using the total gym for a few weeks. It arrived with smashed roller wheels, but it only took a week to receive replacements.
The TG works ok, but to follow the exercise routines you have to hook and unhook the pulley from the board. This is VERY DIFFICULT to do and discourages following the routine. Also the board roll is bumpy not smooth as you would expect.
On the plus side, the exercises improve flexibility and work well for men and women. So it's better than nothing, but at a high price....more info

  • Total Gym Review
This has been a great resistance training product for me. Setup was relatively easy although the product is not quite as portable as I thought it would be; it does take up quite a bit of space and is heavy to move so you are best off to set it up someplace that you don't have to move it. The exercises are easy to learn and fun to do. The gliding motion is smooth and transition between exercises is quick and easy. It has been very effective for me so far. The one complaint I do have is that the bench apparatus is heavy and difficult to move the incline up and down between exercises; if you have a bad lower back like I do you have to be very careful. ...more info

I could have bought the basic, 1100 I think, at Academy, but thought maybe it would be too cheap. I decided on the 1700. It came with way more in the way of add-ons and accessories than I anticipated. I use two of the four sets provided.
It provides and excellent and fast workout for all the muscle groups. It reminds me of my early days, mid 70's with the Nautilus gear.
I am done, sweaty and worked in less than thirty minutes.
I can recommend this product....more info
