Customer Reviews:

  • Cheaply Made
This device cooks well enough, but it is "tinny", for lack of a better word. Good old George Foreman is MUCH more substantially made. The stainless steel exterior is more difficult to keep clean than other devices. I would have paid more for a better made machine. Nice try, but not up to my standards in cookware....more info
  • Griddler Purchase
Won't be buying as much from Amazon since they decided not to accept Bill-Me-Later anymore. It's REAL disappointing to know that you took away an important avenue of purchasing power on the internet. Do like the griddler though. Great product. Great value. Great service....more info

  • Great Griddle
We have really enjoyed the Griddler in the short time that we have had it. So far we have only made pancakes on the griddle part, but it does a wonderful job with them. It really helps to have the right tools. The pancakes cook quickly, and clean up is easy....more info
  • I could not be happier
I needed a counter top grill as we moved to a high-rise condo and I no longer had a gas grill in the backyard. So far I have had no problems with the product and I could not be happier with the results. It works very well for grilling meat and pressing sandwiches - I have not had an occasion to use the griddle yet. The best part is that the cooking plates are removable and can be put in the dishwasher so there is no messy cleanup. I recommend this product to anyone who needs a counter grill - before I was using a Foreman and this has it beat by leaps and bounds....more info
  • The best pinini maker
I've been searching for THE pinini maker for several years, online and on the shopping channels. I found the Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler for a great price, as usual, at Amazon.com. It makes perfect pinini's. We even did breakfast sandwiches and plan to do cinnamon sugar with bananas, peanut butter with fluff and maybe some pie fillings for desserts a la mode! Wonderful product. Run, do not walk to order yours!...more info

  • Love this grill
I just bought this grill and absolutely love it. I was originally going for a George Forman but decided to pay a little more and get this one instead after reading the reviews. We originally got it for grilling salmon as we eat it several times a week and don't have an outdoor grill. I use it in the closed configuration rather than open as they recommend, and my fish comes out beautiful, moist and delicious every time. And it cooks fast too. I do spray the grill with a little bit of nonstick cooking spray before putting the fish on. And of course it makes wonderful panini sandwiches. I think it will pay for itself quickly with the amount of money I save by not eating out because now I can make my own delicious sandwiches and take them to work for lunch. I can't wait to try grilling veggies on it too. I think my only problem is that now I will have to make room for it on my kitchen counter because we'll be using it so much it won't be worth putting it away!...more info
  • Poorly designed
I got this product for christmas 2008 - so I've had it for about four months now. I was originally excited about it (and asked for it) because I respected the Cuisinart name and liked it's apparent versatility. Plus, there were good reviews here, so I figured I was alright. After trying it out, I was so surprised by how poor the design was that I am writing (I think) my first ever review on amazon to warn others against purchasing it...

The grill looks nice and all... it's a cuisinart and it has that "steel" kind of look that their kitchen products have. The troubles start when you go to use the thing. Note too that I'm not commenting here on my personal device - these issues are basic design problems that would impact all the units.

First, and Cuisinart doesn't tell you this until you open the manual, but it is worth noting that the entire unit gets hot... and I mean REALLY hot. Whereas with a George Forman (or whatever) the unit gets pretty hot, but you can touch different parts of it because of the plastic coating, the Gridler has no such coating. The result is that when it is on, all of the metal parts of the grill heat up - pretty much equally. This means that the entire nice looking metal top gets so hot that you will burn your hand if you touch it. The arms leading up to the handle bar likewise get hot. Next, the grill plates actually stick out from the unit itself on all sides - this makes the hottest part of the device actually be the first thing you'd hit if your hand brushes against it. The only safe part to touch is the plastic handle that runs along the top. You might ignore this point saying - oh, I'd never touch the main unit - but I promise, you will.

Second, and part of why you WILL touch the main unit, is that the "flip-top" design doesn't really work automatically. So, when you make that big panini sandwich, if you close it normally, it won't close flat on your sandwich. Instead, it will close at an angle and push your sandwich apart. The device is able to close flat, but to do so you need to unhook the top from the arm - this can usually be done by hitting the top lightly to release it from the pressure-hold with which it connects to the arm. So, put together problem one with this and you realize that to release the top and make your sandwich, you need to touch a part of the unit that gets almost as hot as the grill plates itself. Fortunately, you really only need to hit it to release it, so you can usually do it quickly enough that you won't get burned.

Third, the grill plates themselves are unimpressive. They actually look exactly like the cheap grill plates in my 8 year old george forman. They are cheap, and just have a simple coating of teflon. This coating is already starting to wear off - and that's pretty pathetic given that I so rarely even use the grill to begin with... You get two sets of plates with the device - flat plates and grill plates. Everything here is pretty much as you'd expect, but recognize that cleaning this thing is a huge pain. The flat plates are easy enough - you can pop them off and scrub them down in the sink. The grill plates though - you could spend 20 minutes just trying to get them cleared off completely. The "spatula" they give you doesn't quite fit the slots in the grill plates, even though it's supposed to, so if things get burnt on at all, you really have to spend some time scrubbing the grill out. Finally, the grill plates are very thin. This means that when you go to scrape them clean, it is actually a little difficult to get the drippings to go to the drip cups. Often, the drippings will flow over the sides instead.

Fourth, while most of these grills have some downward angle to them, the cuisinart does not. This is convenient for some things - sandwiches, pancakes, etc., but remarkably inconvenient for most meats. I feel like it would have been simple to make some taller feet for the back or something that you could switch out to put the device on an angle for meats - they didn't do that, and the frontal design wouldn't accommodate it anyway. The result is that when you cook meats, nothing drains into the "drain cups" - well, almost nothing. Because there is no angle on the device, all the juices, fat, marinade, etc. just sits where it lands on the grill. This contributes to the grill plates getting material burnt onto them and making them hard to clean. Plus, the low sides make is so that when you do go to clean the device, you will have a hard time scrapping everything toward the corner. All of the grill lines are perpendicular while the drip tray is only in the corner. This means you have to push the drippings to the front of the device, and then to the side. With the grill lines in the way, this is nearly impossible and ultimately means you'll probably get drippings on the front of the device.

Finally, and maybe this is nit-picky, but the manual and operational design are terrible. You could read that manual for 20 minutes and still not be sure what they're talking about in terms of the controls. The center switch allows you to select between the open griddle and the panini press, but in each case, you should be heating both the top and the bottom elements, so it's never clear what the difference actually is. When you do make a selection, they have different nobs on the left and right to control the temperature, but the knobs use different systems - one uses "low", "medium", "high", etc; the other uses numerical degrees. I have no idea why they decided to not use numbers on both sides, or the low, med, high on both sides - or what the real difference is in either case.

Ultimately, this is just a poor product. It seems like Cuisinart wanted to enter the "small kitchen grill" market and this was their first attempt. I am routinely surprised this device made it out of testing in its current form and would never recommend it to a friend. You pay WAY more than you should - comparable devices that are better designed routinely cost far less. There are actually few positive things I can say about this thing... I guess it looks pretty enough on the counter - but that's about it....more info
  • Love it!
We us our griller at least a couple of times a week to make healthy and ymmy sandwiches. It works great and is very easy to clean--the non-sticke removable plates pop right out for a quick wash.

I was afraid this would be another kitchen gadget that we never use--but it makes GREAT paninis and we are using it regularly....more info

  • A great appliance that is very functional!
First off this is the first griddler/pannini press I have ever owned and I am not any a gourmet. I bought this griddler/pannini press for my wife because she loves eating pannini sandwiches. We have had it only for a month and to date have not made any pannini sandwiches but have used it as an indoor grill (steaks, hamburgers, vegetables, etc.) We have been very satisfied with the product. It heats up in a reasonable amount of time, stays hot, cooks the food very quickly and clean up is a breeze. The non-stick plates are excellent and removable for easy clean up. One issue in the griddle/pannini mode when you fold back the top plate to handle the food and it is covered by oil or grease it does drip off the bottom (hinge edge) on to the cord and counter. We addressed this issue by "molding" paper towels across this area to collect the drippings. The press handle stays cool during cooking and it takes ~20-30 minutes for the plates to cool down sufficiently to be handled for washing. The appliance appears to be well built and sturdy but lightweight and compact enough for storage. One thing I personally don't like are the unattached drip cups which of course I have already knocked over spilling grease all over the place. But from looking at the various brands out there this seems to be a fairly common set up. The price is even lower now so if you are in the market for one right now I feel this is a good deal. ...more info

  • Cuisinart Griddler
We have owned this appliance for about two years now. It has performed well and I feel it does it well. We have always hand washed the plates and there is no degradation of the non-stick material at all. I even took it to work for a month and least ten different people used it daily without issue. My only complaint is the printing on the controls. We cooked turkey burgers right after buying it and the grease erased the lettering. If this unit failed now, I would buy another. ...more info

  • Great buy!
It took me a while to decide between this product and a couple of others in the market. The quality of Cuisinart is just unbeatable. This griddler is well made and sturdy. The plates are removable yet it seems they are permanently attached. They don't wiggle around or feel flimsy like other machines I tried. I use this little appliance almost everyday for either breakfast sandwiches to steak, brats, vegetables...etc.! I could not be happier with this product! And, while the price is pretty standard everywhere, with Amazon.com you will save on the shipping charges. Once again, a very happy consumer!...more info
  • So far so good.
This has been a great product and so far no problems with it. We use it in our RV and I have no complaints about it at all. It can fit open on our table so we can cook or keep things warm on it as we eat. When open it is an even surface and has been very good cooking both as an open griddle and closed like a griller. The plates snap off and on easily - very nice! Just make sure to put the top plates on the top (as marked) and the bottoms on the bottom. We have had good success with steaks, burgers, bacon, waffles being cooked on it so far. It has been a one of the best cooking utensils that has been added to our camping trips to date....more info
  • I don't really like it
I received this for christmas and I used it for the first time tonight for grilled chicken. What a pain. The cooking was not even, the fat didn't drain it just sat in the grill channels and burned. Which gets me to my next point, it's not as non-stick as it should be. After a few minutes I made my husband clean it for me since he gave it to me.

The only reason I gave it two stars is because I may like it for sandwiches but that remains to be seen.

I would never have spent 130 dollars on this grill. Save the money and buy a grill pan and a griddle. If you want to press sandwiches get a brick!...more info
  • Good idea, poor execution
I needed a griddle, and this seemed like a great idea -- an appliance that does double duty, creates a nifty panini in addition to pancakes, good manufacturer(?) -- a slam dunk, right? Wrong.

This has been a disappointment, mainly because of poor heating. You never know what temperature surface you will get. If set to 350, it may eventually reach it, but put cool batter on it, and it may take 10 minutes to get back up to temperature. And turn the heat up, to 450, say? Next time, they'll burn in 2 minutes flat.

I received a replacement from Cuisinart, and the new unit seemed to heat a little more evenly, but I think it was mostly wishful thinking. AND, the new unit doesn't stay level when in an open position -- it tilts when a spatula presses on it. Now my warranty has expired, so it's just taking up space for the occasional sandwich.

So if you're looking for something that will grill a hamburger like a George Foreman grill, get a GF grill. It will most likely do a better job than this unit. And for pancakes, get a real griddle. That's what I'm gonna do....more info
  • If you don't have a dishwasher, not so easy to clean
    -Plus-
    (1) I've now owned the Griddler for two weeks. I've never managed to make a chicken breast in my life which wasn't over- or under-done. With the Griddler, I was able to make six perfect chicken breasts in 5 minutes. I was really, really pleased and they tasted fabulous.

    -Minus-
    (2) I just tried London Broil today - it turned out OK. What's confusing is that if you plan on using the double-sided grill, the Griddler only specifies Warm, Low, Medium, High and Sear, so you need to guess what the equivalent stove temperature would be (i.e. 300 degrees, 400 degrees, broil, etc.). I used High for 6 minutes and - while it was well done on the outside - the inside was still bloody. So, there's some amount of tweaking you need to do initially to figure out how to cook certain items which aren't explicitly covered in the Griddler cookbook that comes with the product.

    -Additional Points to Consider: Grease-
    (3) Definitely consider putting paper towels behind the Griddler. When you're done using it, if you let it cool down with the top plate suspended above the bottom plate, the top plate will have a tendency to drip meat juice and grease onto the countertop behind it.

    -Additional Points to Consider: Cleaning-
    (4) It's really not that easy to clean UNLESS you have a dishwasher or a lot of patience. You need to allow the Griddler atleast 30 minutes to cool down before you can detach the plates without burning yourself. If you prefer meat which is seared on the outside, you probably haven't sprayed the plates with non-stick oil - in which case they're probably crusted. If you try to wash them in the sink immediately, you'll spend *a long time* trying to scrape off the crust with the tool that comes with the Griddler, and you'll get wet and smelly while doing so. Today, I let them soak in the sink for about 15 minutes before washing them - this worked out much better. However, for all the time I saved using my Griddler for cooking, I lost in waiting for it too cool down and then in waiting for it to soak.

Overall, I'm still happy with the purchase, primarily because of the chicken breasts. I'm hoping to try the panini feature tomorrow. But, the thing to recognize is that it's just not as quick and easy as everyone seems to say it is (atleast not in my experience) if you don't have a dishwasher....more info
  • Money Well Spent
The Griddler (GR-4) makes meals fun! It is easy to use, and it produces yummy paninis in less than four minutes. I'm concerned with an image another owner sent in showing The Griddler in the open position with uneven-looking grills. When the top grill is locked in position for open grilling, the grills DO lie flat and even. Don't let that photo keep you from investing in this wonderful, high quality appliance....more info
  • Non stick coating doesn't last
After about 3 days of using the grill and washing it in the sink I noticed that some of the non stick coating was coming off but I let it go. A week later I was drying the heating plates with a towel only to remove the towel to see that it had turned gray and that it appeared more of the non stick coating was coming off.

I returned the item and I'm not looking for a new grill...more info

  • Griddler Happy
My son wanted a Panini Grill Press and kept pressing me to buy one. After several uses, this Cuisinart Griddler and Press is awesome! The grill cheese sandwiches and Panini sandwiches are great. But the best is taking a large Kosher hotdog, splitting it long ways, fold it open and grill it with the top down in the grill mode. When you take the hotdog(s) off the grill and shut the grill off, set a hotdog roll in the press for less than a minute. Dress your dog and enjoy! It's the best hotdog you'll ever have. Cleanup is a snap. Only complaint is that the rubber legs are not perfectly even (fraction off) so the unit does not rest squarely on the counter. ...more info
