|Philosophy Hope in a Jar
What it is:A therapeutic daily facial moisturizer for all skin types. What it is formulated to do:The original formula of Hope In A Jar was originally created for the medical market and is a world-renowned skin cream. For years, plastic surgeons have been recommending this formula to patients in pursuit of younger, healthier skin. Results can be seen and felt within days - a healthy, rosy glow to the skin that doesn't require makeup or cover up.
- Just not for me
I use many Philosophy products, but the Hope in a Jar is one that I really do not care for. I mean it is okay, but nothing spectacular. Sometimes when I use it it breaks out my skin and then other times it seems to be okay. Then I have had times to where it has made my skin extremely oily. My makeup seems to disappear more when I have applied this under it. And I use Philosophy the supernatural airbrushed canvas makeup. I have tried other moisturizers and somehow will come back from time to time to see if anything has changed with Hope in a Jar. But more times than not, it just isn't for me. I do like the feel of it though. It feels silky and melts into the skin like water. Philosophy is and will stay one of my favorite make up lines. ...more info
- Unhealthy Ingredients and LOTS of ZITS
I have pretty normal, average skin, though it does occasionally break out. I am a VERY experienced cosmetics user, but due to all the great reviews I gave this a try even though I knew this had DIAZOLIDINYL UREA in it, and this preservative is responsible for a lot of cases of CONTACT DERMATITIS and allergic reactions (presumably this is what so many other users have experienced). Well, my skin is pretty hardy, and I did not have a reaction, but I did get lots of zits- not the kind I normally get, either, and after trying the cream on one side of my face for a week to make sure it was the culprit, I only had break outs in the areas where it had been used. That's good enough proof for me. On another note, in terms of lasting skin improvement, while this does technically have vitamin E in it, the vitamin presents as the tocopherol form, which is not absorbed into your skin in any meaningful way.
In short, this is a light moisturizer that made my skin feel pretty good but caused persistent breakouts. If you have ever had problems with acne of any kind, stay away. If you have ever had a reaction or problems with redness, stay away. If you actually want something to improve your skin long term, you should probably look elsewhere. However, if you just want light moisturizing and have never had any problems with your skin, this might be worth a try....more info
- Great product
I have been blessed with dry, acne prone, very red skin. I used to have beautiful peaches and cream skin but as I've gotten older my cheeks have a "sandpaper" texture and my forehead has a "pizza" texture (combination skin) In the past my choices have been either have acne or dry skin. Not anymore! I purchased this cream after hearing all the great stuff about it. I purchased the medium size for $38.00 from Sephora.
First off, yes the smell is not what you might expect from a company who makes products called "gingerbread man" and "Strawberry" it takes some getting used to but it won't deter me from using it, and I am pretty sensitive to smells. Second I am surprised at the amount in the jar and you need to use so little I think this will last a while. The only downside is that it leaves your skin a little "Rosy" I don't need any help in that department so this may be a good excuse for me to try some of the clinique products for red skin. I don't think it's a reaction I just think it's the nature of the product, it does say it will give you a healthy glow right on the jar. I have had no bad reactions to it at all. But when I need a refill I will probably pick up the sensitive skin formula. This is my introduction to the Philosophy line and I will most likely buy more products from this company
Bottom line: this is a good product, if you saw the amount of creams in my bathroom you would understand how amazing it is that this is the one I reach for each day. If you're unsure of the smell or if you'll react to it there is a small jar/tube available for sale for about $15.00. You should also be able to a free sample from Sephora....more info
- Allergic reaction to this skin cream!
I purchased the Purity cleanser and Hope In A Jar skin cream with great expectations. The cleanser is okay, but not as good as my current one. The Hope In A Jar cream was simply terrible. First of all, the smell. It smells very bad, but it is really hard to describe exactly what it does smell like. Just a really awful smell! I put on a very small amount of the cream after washing my face before bedtime, and it made my skin feel great - until I woke up the next morning to a bright red face with little tiny blisters on my cheeks, chin, nose and forehead. Needless to say, I shipped it back that day. I do not recommend this cream for two reasons: the allergic reaction I had to the cream, and the really bad smell. ...more info
- Great face cream
It is a really great face cream. It is not greasy but hydrates skin well. My skin is sensitive to breakouts but this cream dosen't bother it at all....more info
- don't know what the hype is all about
Nothing any different from any other moisturizer, in fact, much less. I used the entire jar and there was no real benefit at all, which is why I wonder why it remains a bestseller in Amazon. All hype, nothing more.....more info
- Disgusting, and man, what a letdown
Normally, I love Philosophy. I use the Purity cleanser every day. I have several of the 3-in-1s, and I use those to wash my hair, as they give me really great body. And I love their scents.
But this . . . this reeks. I don't understand why they can have such lovely smelling products and then this, which is one of their flagship items. Even the foot lotion smells good. Hope in a Jar smells so bad I can't even use it.
Some people were able to stick it out for a few days and wound up with a rash. I can't even wear it once, which might have saved me from some nasty discomfort in the end. So, good, I guess? Ugh.
Other than that tenuous positive, I just cannot find a single saving "grace" (ha) for this product. ...more info
- Like it
I had been using the purity cleanser and decided to try Hope in a Jar. I really like it, it goes on smooth, is absorbed quickly, and gets rid of my winter alligator face. I do not notice a strong smell....more info
- Ok moisturizer, foul smell
I can't say this is the best moisturizer I've ever used. It's keeps my skin from drying, but it doesn't give my skin the "i can't stop touching my cheeks" suppleness and softness that soem other moisturizers have. Also, towards the end of the jar, the consistency became increasingly flaky/filmy, which I did not like. But even then, I would say it's an ok 3-star moisturizer. Not having SPF is a huge drawback (although they now came out with one with SPF).
What I couldn't stand was the smell. To me, it had a strong sulfuric smell, like bad eggs. Not enough to gag or anything, but enough to grimace. And it lingered for a couple hours. My boyfriend didn't like the smell either, so I'm pretty sure it's not that I alone have a weird sense of smell. I kept using the product until I finished it because of it's rave reviews and purported benefits, but after using it on a consistant daily basis, I don't notice any miraculous effects on my skin and I certainly didn't get used to the smell.
I moved on to a moisturizer that leaves my skin supple and soft, has SPF, and is fragrance-less (or very lightly perfumed)....more info
- The best moisturizer!!!
This moisturizer is AMAZING!! The best benefit is the way it totally changes the texture and appearance of the complexion. My skin had never looked so radiant and beautiful. I no longer have acne....my skin is perfecT!!! I never knew it could look this good honestly. I love that there is no greasy film, my makeup stays put all day long and it does not make me itch like other moisturizers have. It is AMAZING!!!!! No wonder so many people rave about it. It is the best!!!! Definitely worth the money. Ive been using it about 2.5 weeks, and it is so exciting!!! ...more info
- Not good for wrinkles
Hope in a Jar is a very good product if you have normal skin, its very moisturizing. I do not agree with all the reviewers who said it smells bad, for me the scent is great, maybe a little bit too strong. I'm almost 30 and i have very good skin but i am looking for products that will stop premature age marks, since i'm a doctor and get little sleep. That is not one of Hope in a Jar benefits, i prefer Clinique Step 3 in my case....more info
- Not Bad, but not Great Either.
I don't mind the smell like it seems others do. I actually prefer it because it doesn't smell like flowers, which tend to give me a headache.
The product does soak right into the skin, which is nice, but I noticed my face feeling rough the first few days I used it and lasting for almost two weeks, it was only upon stoping the product for a few days that I noticed my skin, in some areas, looks more even toned and smoother. So I am thinking the product does something to the top layer of skin, like maybe a dermabrasion effect, that can only be noticed after a few weeks, and only when taking a break from the product. I don't know, maybe I haven't used it long enough. I did have some sensitivity in my forehead area, but my skin is sensitive there anyway, I am only ok with that area if I just use Dove soap and Eucrine Lotion, for some reason those two products don't irritate, but they don't repair either. Ugh! LOL..well, I can just say, try it yourself, and see if the minimum benefits are good enough for you. I still use it from time to time, but if I know I have an affair to attent to, I hold off for a few days to get my skin past the abrasion phase....more info
- disaster in a jar
My best friend gave me this product as a gift in gift set for my birthday and i was really excited because i heard so many great reviews until i started using it. This made my skin horribly itchy and scaley, totoally not worth it. this item is too over priced. just because something cost 50 or 60 dollars doesnt mean it will work, be warned..VERY disappointed...more info
- Allergic reaction
I bought this as a set, and at first I thought wow this feels really good.............and then............the problems started, itching burning, swelling. I only used it once, and my face was so uncomfortable, tiny little blister type spots and itchy rash.....what on earth is in this product. I never have allergies to moisturiser, and have tried many products but usually favour Clinique dramatically different. You may not have a reaction to it, personally I would not risk it....more info
- I like it.
I finally tried this one. I really like Philosophy products, but I was afraid of those half and half reviews. I finally bought 0.5 size jar. The smell is really not my favorite, if I`d have to describe it- an indistinct smell of the sphincter. I`m happy that you actually can experience only when you inhale from the jar.
My skin feel really moist, not oily, no breakouts so far. I like the little redness on my cheeks after I use it. So far works pretty good. I wouldn`t call it luxurious, but I`m happy with the results (after 3 days of using it twice a day). Some people complaint about breakouts-probably cream contains some pore clogger, the best is too google the ingredients.
One star down for the odour, of course. I`ll buy again....more info
- It really is a jar of hope!
I have normal to combination skin - Prone to breakouts occasionally, but for the most part, I have a nice, clear complexion - but occasionally skin is very dull and drag. I like to use an exfoliator at least twice a week (my favorite is Origins Never a Dull Moment). But when I started using Hope in a Jar, I have found that there is almost no need to exfoliate my skin anymore. My skin has just become absolutely radiant.
I used Origin's Have a Nice Day for quite some time. I really like the moisturizer, and the fact that it has an SPF is a plus, but I just never noticed a great improvement in my skin's texture. So I decided to try Hope in a Jar, which is about the same price, and I noticed results in one week. It's also light enough to use as a nighttime moisturizer, which I use every single night - and find that my skin improves vastly after using it at night - trust me - try it for a week each night - you'll see a very noticeable difference. I've been using Hope in a Jar for a few years now, and I have to say that it is the one beauty product that I cannot go without - I swear by it!
This moisturizer comes in a 2 oz. jar. The product itself is just so light. You scoop a tiny bit out and gently rub into skin and it instantly dissolves. It feels great! The smell of the product is very light - I find it pleasant actually. This is a refreshing product that is for all skin types - it's really Hope - in a jar!
I also add a few drops of Clarins UV Plus (50spf high potency sun protection) to my moisturizer for daytime - sunscreen is a necessity - I really wish Hope in a Jar would come with at least 30spf - it would make my life easier :)
- not for acne prone skin
I was very optimistic about using this product due to all of the good reviews. Unfortunately, it's one more to add to the "no good" pile. It has a lightweight fluffy texture, which I liked - it spread on evenly and you don't need much. Many people complained about the smell, but it didn't bother me at all - it was a faint lavender smell. Now the important stuff: well, it did make my skin incredibly soft. My foundation spread on much more evenly than it used to. BUT....I started getting cystic acne after using this....and I mean TONS of them. Before using this, I would get an occasional breakout, and very very rarely the cystic types. I have combination skin and am in my 20's. After using this for about a week, my face was breaking out horribly! There were 4-5 large acne cysts....I continued using this product for about a month (so that the "uglies" could be brought to the surface which is common with new products)...but it still continued. It's just too much of a negative to continue using this product. ...more info

I received a sample size of this, used it twice, and a day later woke up to a red rash all over my face. I am on cortisone pills. Not good =( Buyer beware, esp. if you have sensitive skin....more info
- Great for mineral makeup!
I have SUPER sensitive skin and live in dry and windy Colorado. This product is terrific! It goes on smooth and my skin soaks it up instantly. I wear mineral makeup and some moisturizers you have to wait awhile for your skin to soak it in. I've never had that problem with this one, sometimes I even have to put on another layer it's gone so fast. My skin looks and feels 100% better almost immediately after use. I haven't had any issues reactions which is rare for my fair/sensitive skin but if you do have oily skin you should probably pass (it's so rich that it can occasionally cause minor breakouts). I don't understand all the comments about the smell? It doesn't bother me a bit because it's mild and doesn't linger around. I have found very few fragrance-free products so if that's your deal keep looking but otherwise it smells like any typical moisturizer containing soothing botanicals. There may be better moisturizers out there for the $$ but I have yet to find it so until then I will save my 5 stars....more info

- Had a very bad reaction to this product
I use alot of the philosophy products and love them. I have used Hope in a Bottle and never had a problem with it. I had a sample of the Hope in a Jar and I used it. By the end of the day I noticed my eyelids were swollen and by the next morning my eyes were almost swollen shut. I'm on day 2 of this reaction and the swelling has come down considerably but an itchy rash has appeared on my eyelids and on my cheekbones. I didn't think I used it around my eyes but apparently I did. The only other product by philosophy that I have had an allergic reaction to was Inner Grace perfume and cream. I can use all the other Grace perfumes, creams soaps etc but not Inner Grace. I guess now I have to put Hope in a Jar on that list as well....more info
- Not Worth the Price -- 'Hope' Doesn't Live Up to Hype
I feel like there must be something wrong with my skin, because unlike the people who gave this product rave reviews, I got nothing out of this product. Fortunately I bought the small size from Sephora (I believe it's only 1oz?) because I wasn't ready to buy the larger, ridiculously expensive ones without a trial use first. Anyway, the product itself is deceiving because it appears to have a fluffy consistency that would work well with any skin type -- creamy enough for dry skin without being too greasy or heavy for oily/acne-prone skin. However, the cream leaves a flaky film when you rub it into your face. I tried rubbing it in as gently as possible and using as little cream as possible at a time in order to avoid this, but it still occurs. Anyway, to sum it up, this product is more of a hassle than anything else, especially if you want to apply makeup on afterwards -- hard to do with flakes of moisturizer all over your skin, which you'll have to spend time taking off first. It makes me wonder: does your skin even absorb the over-priced cream in the first place??...more info
- Great Mosturizer
This is a great moisturizer. It's light and doesn't really make my face oily. The only problem is that this lasted only a month, and unfortunately in this economy I can't keep buying this. I would if I could, BUT i CAN'T.
Take Care :.)...more info
- Love it
As someone with very dry skin, I was tired of moisturizers that were too thick and goopy. Hope in a Jar, on the other hand, is excellent! I have been using it for a couple of years now, and still love it. It's very light and absorbs quickly, but makes my skin feel moisturized all day. My skin has never had an allergic reaction to it, either....more info
- Great but expensive....
I had the make-up optional kit which includes "Hope in a jar" and loved it (except the price). I am in my 50's and when I started using the kit--people would stop me mid-conversation to mention my skin looking great! Never had that happen before and I attributed it to the "Hope in a jar" which gives the skin a rosy glow. As I continued to use the product I believed that it maintains good skin but does not smooth out those fine lines you get in your 50's. While I adored "When Hope is not Enough" serum also --that as well, did nothing for laugh lines or firmed the skin--but I loved the way it felt. (The only product in the kit that really did absolutely nothing is the little hope in a tube lip line product. Seriously, that did zip.)
Anyway, after running out of Hope in a jar and the Hope serum--and not re-ordering them--- I got dermatitis from using other products! It has been frustrating to say the least. I do believe now, that there is something in "Hope in a jar" that balances skin or at least my skin and once I stopped using those 2 products twice daily--my skin has had so many problems.
So, while "Hope in a jar" may not reduce fine lines--it does keep the skin in beautiful condition health wise. I regret that I did not re-order this product. ...more info
- great on my oily blemished skin!
I received a deluxe sample of Philosophy's hope in a jar cream. I have been using it for almost two weeks and have since ordered a full-sized jar of it. I have acne-prone skin that is mostly oily. I tried some new acne products and they dried out my skin, so I gave hope in a jar a trial run to restore the balance.
In just two weeks, I have seen a major improvement in my skin. I have no new blemishes and the scars from the old ones seem to be fading. My skin is hydrated, but it doesn't feel greasy. A little goes a long way, so I'm sure that the jar that I ordered is going to last a long time. I still think that $60 is too much for only 4 ounces, so I gave this 4 stars instead of 5.
I know a lot of other reviewers complained about the smell. I don't mind it. When I was younger, my mom used a natural fragrance-free vitamin e lotion that smells a lot like hope in a jar. I think that hope in a jar smells the same because it's fragrance-free. That's a good thing since the chemicals that are used to add fragrance can sometimes irritate sensitive skin. I'd rather have lotion that smells like vitamin e lotion than pretty-smelling lotion that makes me break out. The smell goes away after the lotion dries anyways.
I see that they offer a half ounce size, which is about the same size as the deluxe sample I tried. If you're on the fence about this lotion, order the small size and give it a couple of weeks to see how it works for you. ...more info
- No hope for my skin...
I don't get how you can have a one formula for all skin types, it really makes no sense, and I believe that more that I have bought and tried this product. This stuff might be great if you have normal skin, but who really does? My skin is dry, and this product, even with it slathered on did not provide me with enough moisture. My friend with oily skin who used it said it made her break out. Not to keen on the smell or the texture, either. ...more info
- Even better than I'd HOPED for!
This product is unbelievable! I am not a big review writer for any product but I am so in love with HOPE IN A JAR that I must write a review.
I just received my jar two days ago, just in two days the difference in my skin is amazing. I seriously look younger in just two days. I'm 42 years old with dry skin. I take great care in my skin and face and was an avid user of Olay definity and Olay regenerist. They were alright but HOPE IN A JAR beats them hands down. Using any other product my skin still was somewhat dry in spots and just plain tired looking. Olay as well as most other products are sort of heavy where this is as light as silk. It literally feels like silk going on your face and your skin remains feeling that way afterward. You'll notice a huge difference on how smoothly makeup goes on the next morning. My skin is so hydrated and just refreshed looking. That's the best I can explain it. I look like I've had the best sleep of my life the next morning after using this. I also bought the purity cream cleanser (fabulous also) and the hope in a tube eye cream. Also, wonderful. My eyes look wide open and awake. Skin doesn't feel greasy, just perfect. Almost like a new babies skin. You don't need to have any doubts about purchasing this. Yeah, it's a little pricey but SO worth it. You don't need much at all. I can see that a little will go a long way and last quite awhile. Love this stuff.
I'll never go back to anything else. ...more info

- I HOPEd for Something Better
I use philosophy products and usually I am happy with the results. I usually use Cliniques facial Moisturizer but in the past couple of years the quality of it has gone down, and it doesnt work as well as it used to. I was looking for a new moisturizer, my face is normal/dry, with "patches" of dry skin that show up from time to time. I got a week supply of Hope In A Jar from my local sephora counter (I always get samples before buying)
The first thing I can say is that it smells horrible, and I cannot abide by putting something on my face that smells so bad. Now, if it actually worked for my skin, I might have been able to deal with the stench and live with it, but It didnt live up to its name. I noticed no significant change in my skin, It actually caused my skin to become more irritated. I also noticed that it made my eyes water if it got even close to my eyes, and I dont put the product on my eyelids or below, but sometimes it can get close and i have NEVER had a moisturizer sting like that before.
I have since moved onto using Korres WildRose moisturizer which smells heavenly and is perfect for my skin (and eyes) ...more info

- There's Hope for me
I'm confused by the negative reviews of this product: it has been one of a rare few I can use on my skin and not have it turn red, flakey, and irritated. I have never noticed an overwhelming smell. I find it barely noticable.
I have very sensitive skin. I can not wear 95% of the makeup or other beauty products I've encountered (it really is rare to find one that does not give me a reaction). I was hesitent to try Hope at first because my wallet can be more sensitive then my skin. I'm glad I did. I have never had an issue with it. As another reviewer mentioned, I have found this product to give me the most bang for my buck and is the only product I use on my face. My two ounce jar lasted about 8 or 9 months. In my experience, a little bit goes a long way. My skin soaks it right in and it has a beautiful, dewy look. It is soft to the touch and while light weight, this moisturizer is still tough enough to tackle winter skin when parts of my face want to get scaley. It's never left my skin greasy.
I have been nothing but pleased with this product and would recommend it without hesitation....more info

HOPE IN A JAR IS AMAZING!!! I have very sensitive skin that is VERY prone to breakouts... from having acne for a few years I have dark acne scars all over my cheeks and chin.. I have to wear alot of coverup and foundation to cover it all up! Since using hope in a Jar I can already see a MAJOR difference in my skin and its only been 3 days!!! My skin is brighter, my darks spots are fadding and my acne is going away! Having bad skin at my age (23) is very stressful, and hope in a jar has given me TONS OF HOPE that my skin will eventually be acne free and beautiful! I am getting that glow back and 100% getting my confidence back! I am suprised at the other reviews that state this product has a horrible smell.. it absolutley DOES NOT have a bad smell to it.. It smeels like citrus lemons and it Goes away in seconds.
The product is a little expensive but a little goes along way, the product sinks into your skin like water, it makes your skin feel and look sooooooo soft! I have tried TONS AND TONS of products and I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who has ANY TYPE of SKIN.. I believe this would help anyone who has good or bad skin! ITS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!...more info

I really like the texture and overall quality of this product. It is non greasy and really improves skin complexion after a few weeks of use. I have oily skin that does not break out and this cream gave me the perfect moisture I needed without being shiny or heavy. I am giving only 3 stars because the smells very annoying. - Confused by the Negativity on this Site
I've used this product for about 6 months, and I think it is fabulous. It is really light and while it does have a mild smell that reminds me a little of old-fashioned cold cream, it really is mild and goes away as soon as it dries on your face. You do have to wait a bit to apply makeup after you put it on, but that isn't a big deal. I just get a cup of coffee while I wait. I really love this product. I've never got a rash or watery eyes or had it make me break out, and it is very soft. My skin is very sensitive and I get acne, but I've never had a problem with this product. I'm confused as to whether there was a bad batch circulated by amazon, b/c i don't get the reviews here. Also, i can't imagine this product getting flaky near the end as someone said; it is always smooth and soft I'm at the end of my jar now. So, I recommend it completely....more info
- Fantastic - Best Ever Moisturiser!
I really cannot believe the poor reviews I have just read about this product! Surely most of these people must be using something different - I have used Hope in a Jar for over 2 years now and my skin has never been better. I am 43, I previously suffered from extremely sensitive/touchy dry skin prone to breakouts and have found this to be the perfect remedy for it. The texture is great - sinks in very quickly, and a little goes a long way. As for the smell - I am known to have a really strong sense of smell (there are not many perfumes I can wear as they make me feel ill and headachy)there is nothing offensive about the smell of this cream at all, it's very slight and disapears as soon as you've applied it.
I would highly recommend trying this for yourselves, don't be put off by these awful reviews. Hope in a Jar is wonderful!...more info
