Product Description

Based on Janette Oke's best-selling book series, and directed by Michael Landon Jr., Loves Comes Softly is inspired story-telling for the whole family. Marty and Aaron Claridge (Katherine Heigl and Oliver Macready) travel west in search of new opportunity. But when tragedy strikes and Marty is suddenly widowed, the young woman must face the rugged terrain, bleak weather, and life among strangers-alone. That is until a handsome widower named Clark Davis ( Dale Midkiff) suggests a platonic "marriage of convenience" until Marty can return home. As the months pass, through, Marty and Clark discover an unexpected new love where there was once only loss.

Writer/director Michael Landon Jr. continues in his famous father's footsteps by creating moral family entertainment set in the early days of the American prairie. Stubborn Marty Claridge (Katherine Heigl, Grey's Anatomy) travels west with her new husband--but after they find a beautiful patch of land, her husband dies in an accident before they've even started building. A man named Clark (Dale Midkiff, Air Bud: World Pup) makes a proposal: If Marty will enter into a platonic marriage with him, he'll pay for her passage back east in the spring. What Clark needs is a mother, however temporary, for his willful tomboy daughter Missie (Skye McCole Bartusiak, Beyond the Prairie, Part 2). Missie fights Marty's presence fiercely while Clark, though supportive, speaks few words, and Marty suspects she's made a terrible mistake--but time reveals otherwise. Love Comes Softly, based on the popular Christian novel by Janette Oke, is a romance, but Landon carefully avoids any bodice-ripping histrionics. Problems get solved perhaps a little too easily, but the movie is cleanly written, pleasantly understated, and respectful to its characters. For many viewers, Love Comes Softly will be a welcome change from overheated secular love stories. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

  • Great Family Entertainment
I have really enjoyed the movies. I watched the movies before I read all the books in The Love Comes Softly series. I have enjoyed the books very much. However, I wish the movies were based more on the books themselves instead of adding their own material or changing characters. I know Missy is a main character in the books but they really are about Marty and Clark and how their family continues to grow. I still highly recommend both the books and the movies. I just wish the movies were more true to the books themselves....more info

  • Inspirational story about true love.
This is the beginning of the "Love Comes Softly" videos. These stories should be seen by every child in America. Michael Landon Jr has continued where his father has left off and I know he is in heaven looking down on his son with such great pride and love. If you can't afford to buy them all (six so far) then I urge you to watch them on The Hallmark Channel and pick your favorite and add it to your video collection. I bought these for my grandchildren which I hope to have someday so they won't miss out on these special stories. I just hope they continue the videos. ...more info

  • Love does indeed come softly
This is a very tender touching story. Both have lost their spouses tragically. Being pioneers they join forces to survive the winter. The struggles they conquer together does indeed form the beginnings of love which would understandably come softly. With both of them grieving for a lost love when they met, the bells ringing, fireworks, love at first sight love would not be likely. Their love does grow and deepen. A feel good movie....more info

  • Heartfelt romance with a touch of reality
No doubt more than once this story actually played out in the 1800's, marriages arranged for survival and for the sake of the family unit. I'm amazed many people expect a movie to exactly follow the book, in most instances that isn't possible, the only movie I can recall coming close to the book version is BBC's production of Pride and Prejudice (with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth). This movie (Love Comes Softly) easily stands on its own as does the book--view them as equal but separate entities. Dale Midkiff's performance was outstanding as a man of deep religious values, moral, compassionate, gentle but strong, kind, wise and understanding of Marty's pain and his child's jealousy and inability to accept a new "mom". I found the "age difference" between Clark and Marty quite believeable, Clark was a man with an established farm (something that wouldn't have been as believeable with a 20-25 year-old widowed man). His character has weathered hard times, loss and sadness in losing his own wife, managing a farm and raising a young child on his own--all making him wiser from these experiences; this increases his compassion toward Marty and his ability to deal with the expected conflict between his young daughter and the newly widowed Marty. One viewer stated there really wasn't a reason for marriage since Clark wanted Marty there to influence and guide his daughter--totally untrue. In that day and time to have a young, recently widowed woman living in his house would have been a disgrace and a vehicle for gossip, totally out of character for the values expressed by Clark--he would never have had Marty living in his house without the benefit of marriage (regardless of whether he and Marty had any love interest). Clark is all man with a strong but soft, gentle side that is irresistible. The viewer can see the budding love in his eyes for Marty as well as see Marty's appreciation for his strength, wisdom, steadiness and his love for his child. Dale (as Clark) is so convincing in the scene where he finally discovers Marty's note, his puffy eyes, his drawn face certainly look as though he has shed many tears over Marty's departure--a rare emotional scene especially for a male actor.

Katherine Heigl is outstanding in the range of emotions her character experiences--from immature, youthful love with her husband Aaron, to the shock and pain of his untimely death, through grief, and finally maturity into a lasting love with Clark. Also, I don't think I've ever seen a better performance from Corbin Bernsen.

This movie is extraordinary, rich in moral values, romance without nudity, expressions of true love without overt sex or explicit bedroom scenes, no swear words--not one single four-letter word so common in movies today--how refreshing. There are lines in this movie that bring you to tears and others that make you laugh out loud.

I love this movie, have seen it many times on DVD and no doubt will watch it many more times. There is an overall sense of goodness in the characters and this movie in general. Michael Landon, Jr. has done an outstanding job of providing a movie worth viewing over and over and a credit to the memory of his Dad. This movie is worth every one of the 5 stars I gave it in this review. ...more info

  • excellent family movies!
I watched this movie last night. Basically it told the story about terrible tragedy that happen to Murthy's husband and she finally had to accept marriage proposal from Clark and the rest of story telling about how they live together with Clark's daughter and start to love each other.

I just want to make 2 most interesting point from this movie.
One is when Murthy asking Clark why he believes in God and loves God while God still allows bad thing happen to him. Clark experience bad situation when his wife passed away and his barn destroyed by fire lately.
He gaves an example that when father teach their child to walk, he will let his child to fall in order to learn how to walk but he will always be there to help. Same thing with God. He won't promise bad things will not happen to us, but He promise will always be there for us because of His loves.

2nd point is when finally comes the time for Murthy to go back home. Murthy wrote letter to Clark saying if he wants her to stay, she will stay. But somehow the letter drop to floor and he missed it.
After drop her to station, Clark came back to his room and praying why God let this thing happen to him. While most people will complaining about, he pray for help to overcome the situation and help him to accept it.

  • Wonderful Story
This movie is very close to the book! Our whole family loves it!...more info
  • Predictable, but worth watching!
This show begins with a touch of tragedy. After finding a new homestead, a young husband is killed, leaving behind a wife from back east to fend for herself. A mysterious stranger offers her a home for the winter, with a promise to send her east again in the spring, if that's what she wants. They marry - to the horror of the man's 9 year old daughter. Eventually, this educated woman is able to break down the walls around this little girl, and at the same time find herself in love with the girl's father. It isn't the 'lightning' love that some expect; it comes softly. Predictably, they have to nearly lose each other before either will admit to their love. Underlying in this story is a great lesson in having faith in God, and in believing that all things happen for a reason. An excellent family show, as well as an introspective look on our own beliefs as to why things happen the way they do. Definitely a must watch!...more info

  • I loved it! Wonderful!
I totally loved this film, from beginning to end. I've only seen half of it on the Hallmark channel. However, it did inspire me to get the DVD to check the whole film, and I'm glad I did. It was wonderful, especially at the end. I cried, I mourned, I laughed, and in the end, I cried again, this time out of happiness and joy. I so can't wait to purchase the other videos in the Love Comes Softly series. I thought Katherine Heigl did an awesome job in the role of Marty. I also loved Dale Midkiff. I think after I check out the other movies, I'll get the books as well....more info

  • Disappointing. Phony. Trite. Historically inaccurate.
Unfortunately, I found this movie predictable and trite. My 14-year-old walked out in the middle because it was boring, we knew what the ending would be and the acting and script were not compelling.
The movie was also anachronistic (ie historically inaccurate). If you know anything about the pioneer period of American history you will find this low-budget film grating. The producers/directors did not bother to get anything correct- costumes, cabin props, barn construction, language and role of women/children in the period. Again, it was so blatant that my 14-year-old also found the historical inaccuracies so intolerable that we spent more time noting these than watching the story line. One minor example of the history issues- the main character is wearing a modern bra with a shoulder clip clearly visible when her blouse (also not historical costume) gets wet.
I am all for the idea of family-friendly stories and I love the stories of pioneer America. But this knowledge and love for true pioneer stories is why I could not appreciate this movie-- I know too much about the period to have this phony imitation of a pioneer situation ring true....more info

  • Clich¨¦s, clich¨¦s and more chlich¨¦s
I seem to be in the minority here, but I found this movie very overrated. The story is standard romance formula 1A, with some discussions about faith thrown in to please Christian viewers. It's extremely predictable and never feels authentic. The movie has nothing to offer that we haven't seen a hundred times before. I don't think I've seen a movie with so many clich¨¦s since "Blonde Ambition".

The acting is also weak, and having also seen "The Last Sin Eater", which also had very bad performances, even by talented actors, I'm starting to suspect Michael Landon doesn't know how to get good performances out of his cast.

Recommended only for die-hard fans of sappy made-for-TV dramas. ...more info
  • The Beginning of a wonderful series.
This is the first movie in a series of movies that are probably my favorite movies of all time.

I love clean romantic movies. But they are hard to find these days. This series was exactly what I was looking for. The characters a relatable, the plot was good, the scenery was beautiful, and there's a good clean romantic relationship in it. What more can you ask for? There are 5 more movies following this out at the moment. They are Love's Enduring Promise, Love's Long Journey, Love's Abiding Joy, Love's Unending Legacy, and Love's Unfolding Dream. I reccommend all of them. Iv'e met people of all ages who like them. They are definitely worth your time!...more info
