Clay Roaster

Cooking pork spareribs in the oven or on the barbeque often requires frequent basting and attention to prevent a dry and flavorless meal. Meanwhile, frying the ribs in a skillet necessitates the use of fatty cooking oil. Each year, the dilemma of cooking juicy, savory meats without the toil and fat inspires a plethora of fresh tools and appliances. Despite all this new-fangled technology, the most effective solution was born during the Roman Empire era: the clay pot. Reco International Romertopf has launched the renaissance of clay-pot cooking with quality products, such as this baker. The baker holds approximately 14 pounds of food, or 4 quarts, and accommodates four to six people. The baker finds use in preparing soup, jambalaya, and pot roast dishes alike.

The baker features the classic Romertopf design. The porous clay construction is free of lead, cadmium, and other impurities. Two shaped handles enable baker transportation. A lid fits on top to contain steam and nutrients. Prior to each use, soak the baker for 10 to 15 minutes to allow the clay to absorb moisture. While cooking, the baker releases this moisture to infuse the dish's natural juices for greater flavor and tenderness. Do not preheat the oven when cooking with Romertopf as sudden temperature shifts may result in irreparable damage. Place the filled baker instead in a cold oven for gradual heating. Wash the baker with warm water and sponge and dry immediately. Avoid hardy detergents that may permeate the clay for negative flavor. The baker's interior stains over time, a reflection of natural seasoning. Read all enclosed materials with care before the baker's initial use. The baker comes with a limited guarantee. Made in Mexico, the baker measures 16 by 11 by 8 inches and weighs 11 pounds upon shipping. --Jessica Reuling

Customer Reviews:

  • Not for the impatient
I have used ths about 4 times. The food usually eventually comes out good, in particularly roasted chicken, but it does not seem to save as much time as I thought it would. Twice I had to put chickens back in the oven that weren't done in middle, and I gave up on a corned beef and just cooked it the crock pot the following day. My expectations were high, so perhaps that is the reason for my dissapointment. But, I had read about a unique flavor the clay imparts... never tasted one.
Also it is so large I have fill one half of the kitchen sink just below full to fit it in soak it. Checking on food is cumbersome as there are no handles, and it needs a very hot oven.
Cleaning is not too bad if u let it sit over night in water.
It is constructed well, but I'm just not a fan of the method. If your roasting mostly chickens, try the next size down, this one is overkill....more info

  • Classic Romertopf arrived broken
It arrived and when I opened it, it had a crack in the bottom part. I have been looking for a way to contact you, but there is not a link for that! So I carefully re-wrapped the clay cooker, and returned it to sender - it cost me $27 to return it. I know you received it - I want an exchange if possible.

Did you reimburse me for the cooker??? How about the postage?

I shall never buy from your 'holier than thou' attituded site again. Take my credit card off your system - and refund my postage for the exchange!

  • Clay!
I have used the clay baker once, so far. I cooked cornish hens, carrots, and potatoes (all at the same time). Everything turned out perfect. Everything was tender and nothing was mushy. I can't wait to use it again!...more info

Very easy to use. Just add your food and spice to taste. Put Clay Baker into a cold oven at 400 to 450 degrees for about 1-? hours and enjoy a delicious hot meal. Everyone in my family enjoys the unique flavor and tenderness of meats, poultry and veggies baked in the Clay Baker....more info
  • clay baker
This clay pot is very useful for preparing healthy
and delicious one pot meals. It is similar to a slow
cooker, but the food tastes baked rather than cooked.

  • My best buy ever
I've had this roaster for over a year now, and I love it. I've cooked roast beef, turkey breasts and roast chicken in it, and every single time it comes out perfect. The meat is always moist and hardly needs a butter knife to be cut. The chicken and turkey especially are so moist that I wouldn't consider cooking them any other way. I did a pot roast last night in it. I forgot to set the timer, so my beef ended up more done (we usually like it rare), but it was still tender and full of flavor....more info
