A Pretty Good Swamp Cooler I recently found myself in the market for a new swamp cooler as one of my old ones had recently died. I have a few requirements for what I was looking for -- it must be portable on wheels, it must have an ice tray, and it must have a timer function. This cooler has all that and more.
The ice tray is located at the top of the unit and will hold 2 trays of ice or more. This provides for a slow, cold drip of cold water which makes the air stream much cooler. This Sunpentown unit doesn't stop there as they've made the water input slot with a wide enough opening to allow large ice cubes to go into the water tank. This is a very cool feature in more ways than one. ^_^
The unit has large touch-buttons to control various actions including the cooling function (this is when the unit is in swamp cooler mode), a 3-speed fan function with sleep mode, the swing function (swivels the internal vertical vent blades), the timer function, and the ion function. The timer can go as high as 8-hours and as low as 30-minutes. The sleep function seems to work even without the timer on, so I'm a little foggy on what it does then. I'm not sure I like the sleep function as part of the 3 fan speeds, but it isn't a big annoyance.
I'm not sure how good the ion function is, but I did seem to notice that the air seemed fresher when the ion fuction was active. The ion function won't prevent the dank smell that comes from turning the cooling function off but leaving the fan on. The instructions say the unit should be emptied every day or two which can be a real "pain" if you are like me and only want to empty it once a week.
The only real problem I have with the unit is the alarm when the water level gets to a certain level. Every once in a while, it will run low while I'm still sleeping and who wants to be jarred awake when it is not time to get up? Making sure the unit is completely full before going to bed is a must to avoid this, so as a complaint, it really isn't that big of a problem.
Bottom line: If you are wanting a good, portable swamp cooler (if you were a fan of Celsius coolers especially), this is the unit to purchase. I'm buying a 2nd one as soon as I move....more info
