Customer Reviews:
  • Well Made with Powerful Fan but Really Only 1525 Watts (i.e. False Advertising)
Few straight guys would get excited about a 2800 watt hair as I would. For me, anything that shaves time off my morning routine is worth hard dollars. An extremely powerful hair dryer could serve this purpose by effectively drying my hair more quickly. Basically, if the Volcano could save one minute a day for the next five working years, it should be worth = 250 days/year * (1/60) hour/min * 5 years * $50/hour or $1,042! So when I purchased my Volcano Hair Dryer for $44.95 including S&H on eBay, I felt I was getting quite a bargain.

Unlike most buyers, however, I knew that it simply could not consume 2800 watts (or 2900 watts listed on mine). If this were true, the hair dryer alone would draw an impossible 23+ amps of current (2800/120), which would blow virtually any circuit breaker connected to a conventional 120v outlet in the US. These are typically 15 or 20 amp, delayed circuit breakers.

So, how much power does the Volcano have? Well, I purchased an interesting energy audit gadget called a Kill-a-Watt. This device provides a simple means of continuously measuring power consumption of standard 120v electrical appliances. Borrowing a few hair dryers from family members, I was able to produce this table:

    ...............................................Reported......Actual......error
Ionic Hair Dryer (aka Volcano)...2900...1525...-47.41% !!!!
    ConAir 1875.............................1875...1515...-19.20%
    Hair Made 1875........................1875...1540...-17.87%
    Andis ProStyle .........................1500...1250...-16.67%

(note some of the Volcano hair dryers are listed at 2900 watts and others at 2800 watts.

As you can see, the manufacturers/distributors are way off. While manufacturers like to embellish , the exaggerated wattage demonstrates a lack of basic knowledge about electric devices. Perhaps the translators had one two many shots of Limoncello.

For those of you more knowledgeable about electronics, you might surmise that the wattage should gradually increase over time. Not really. There were continuous fluctuations of about 2-3% but no upward trend over a five minute period.

Despite the false advertising with the reported capabilities, I am happy with the product. One interesting feature is the intense power of the fan. I used my Windlinq anemometer to measure the exhaust speed (cold) from the hair dryer with its widest attachment. It registered an amazing 58 mph!
