  • does what it is supposed to do
I am very pleased with this item. Heats very quickly and is of solid construction. The handle configuration enables easy handling and operation without having to touch the sides of the pot. My only complaint is that it doesnt hold as much water as I would have liked.

  • Kettle has design problems
I really wanted to like this kettle. I'm a huge fan of electric kettles in general. This one seemed good at first but over a period of about three years has gotten more and more troublesome. The first part to fail was the filter screen in the spout. It fell apart pretty quickly. That wasn't a big problem as we don't have super hard or dirty water; we'd just use it without the filter. Next the steam detector got finicky. It's supposed to shut itself off once the water boils, but after a while this became unreliable. Turning the lid causes a little tab to stick out of the lid and close the spout. With the spout closed the boil detector worked again, but it was hard to remember to close the spout every time. Then you also had to remember to open it before pouring. So we limped along with that for a few more months. Finally it began leaking water from the plastic windows on either side that let you see the water level. I guess the plastic had hardened and was no longer reliably water tight. With water dripping down the sides and pooling around the electric base, we had to retire the kettle.

It seems like all three of these problems are design flaws, not just problems with the one we bought. Perhaps it's just that we boil a lot of water. In any event, my verdict is that this is a nice kettle, but not built to last.

  • Very fast
We've used this kettle for daily coffee brewing for a couple years, we love it: turn it on, grind the beans, prepare the filter, and the water is ready. It is fast, safe and has lasted. The kettle is separate from the heating element so you can take the kettle anywhere, just like you would a stove top kettle.

On the down side, the kettle lid has a tongue that covers the pouring spout, and it does not retract properly. It tends to pop back out when the lid is removed, making it difficult to replace the lid. So I fill the kettle through the spout. This worked well once I removed the filter screen in the spout (I'm not sure what it was for, anyhow).

Also, the brushed stainless finish is no longer beautiful---it lives by the stove and has grease spots even after the grease has been wiped away. But it has lived a hard life and still looks better than the yellowed-with-age white plastic version I had many years ago, and it has not accumulated ugly hard water stains.

Some folks have recommended the Breville kettle over this one. If you want your water boiled as fast as possible, however, the Krups is the better bet as it has 1750 watts of power while the Breville has only 1500 watts. ...more info
  • Quick at the boil, now I'll just have to see about durability.
As with all things, it depends on what you want.

I had numerous gift cards to a well known coffee house and thought I'd use them on this item. I came here (thanks Amazon!) to look at reviews; many were discouraging. Then I happened into a Bed & Bath store (with other items 'beyond') and it was on sale for less than half Amazon's price (which incidentally was a bit cheaper than the coffee place's online store), and I could also apply a ubiquitously available 20% off coupon, so the 'shopper' in me grabbed it.

Of course I cannot now speak to this product's longevity (had it for about a month), but so far it excels at boiling water fast (48oz in under 7 minutes), pours without dribbling, and is easy to use. I can see how the top may malfunction, but as of yet mine has been fine.

I'm very pleased with my purchase (especially at the price I paid), the only things I might wish for (in a perfect world) would be to replace the plastic pieces that come in contact with boiling water (lid, spout, & water level window) with stainless or glass.

I'll write an update in some months, but for now, it does it's job well....more info
  • Worked For 2 Months Then Broke
The Krups FLF3 Stainless-Steel 54-Ounce Electric Kettle worked for 2 months before the kettle's lid broke. The lid jammed onto the top of the kettle. Took some time to remove it.

Works fine if you need a kettle that lasts a year and no more, the cheap "global" manufacturing (not German) has caused the spout opening mechanism to malfunction and I sometimes have to struggle for minutes before I can even get the ruddy thing open...buy at your own risk...The kettle is made in China....more info
  • Kettle exceeds expectations
After narrowing our search down to three or four kettles, we started reading reviews. Some we dismissed, such as:

    1. "The surface gets hot" Well of course it gets hot, it's full of boiling water. I can understand the concerns of persons with small children, however, and would recommend the plastic version for them. It should function just as well. Simply a matter of personal preference.

    Other complaints cited were:

    2. "The contacts failed on the base unit." I suspect this is the result of repeatedly lifting the kettle up while the heating element is on. This could cause arcing of the contacts and lead to premature failure. (This is true of any brand kettle. Leave it alone until it shuts off.)

    3. "The cord is too short." The manufacturer provides a safe and ingenious way to eliminate excessive cord length. There is about four feet of cord coiled up inside the base. Just unroll however much you need.

    4. "It leaks around the water level window." It may someday, but so far we have had absolutely no problem.

We have been totally satisfied with our unit. It works great. Heats water very quickly, is attractive, and easy to use and clean. We have encountered no problems at all. We highly recommend. ...more info

  • Capacity and Speed
The capacity of this kettle is great - it's about a third of what you'd need to boil a decent sized pot of pasta. And I use it to kick start my pasta boils, because filled to the top, this only takes about 3-4 minutes to reach a full boil.

I use it for hot tea at night and filled to the top, I pour it over teabags in a pitcher for iced tea. Most iced tea pitchers are 64-ounces, so you have to add 10 ounces of cold water to the top, but that's perfectly fine.

I have owned my kettle for well over a year and have been tremendously satisfied. ...more info
  • Frustrating Design
    Pros:
    Heats very quickly
    Cordless with convenient base station
Can be filled without removing the top

    Cons:
Handle shape inconvenient to hold - pick up.
Too easy to touch hot areas by mistake when grasping handle
Somewhat complex top (cover) design that can be difficult to remove and
    replace

I just received this pot and would probably not have chosen it as I think there is probably another one of equal or lower price that I now would have preferred. I bought in on line and don't have the energy to return it and try again. It heats water well, and I think I will like it well enough, but I definitely have mixed feelings. I plan to try to add some sort of insulation near the handle to reduce the frustration of touching hot areas when picking it up.

My wife and I were introduced to the electric tea kettle while living in England. We were unable to bring our kettle with us to America, due to the different power standards, so bought this Krups kettle. • Great kettle, but it gets VERY hot!
I love how this kettle looks and how quickly it heats water. I also really like that it is cordless and you can place it on the base without having to line it up. The only trouble is that the stainless steel gets extremely hot and stays that way for a long time. Overall, I would recommend this kettle for those who are concerned about repeatedly heating water in a plastic kettle (like me), but if you don't care about that then you should get one that doesn't get so hot on the outside (most plastic ones cool more quickly or are insulated).

UPDATE! This kettle died after only two years! Buyer beware!

  • Solid feel and performance
I've had this kettle now for about 4 months and deliberately waited for a while before reviewing so that I could give a qualified opinion.

Before I purchased this kettle I had a plastic Bodum 5500-03USA Ibis Cordless Electric Water Kettle, White which served me well for many years. The reason I retired the Bodum was that I read an article about how plastic kettles can emit chemicals into the boiling water. So it was mostly a health issue to find a kettle with a stainless steel interior.

I am very happy with the Krups now. I have been using it daily since I purchased it and never had any trouble with it.

Here is what I like in particular:
    - This kettle heats the water fast, noticeably faster than the Bodum
    - As mentioned before, the interior is stainless steel, no potentially
    hazardous plastics involved
    - The lid comes off entirely which I prefer to the Bodum design which
just flipped open (and could accidentally come down again at an
inconvenient moment such as during water-filling)
    - I like the solid feel of this product, kind of the way "they used to
    make" things...
    - There is a plastic shield running the length of the kettle right behind
the handle to protect hands from accidental burning on the hot steel.

Two things I am not 100 % fond of:
    - The sliding piece of plastic that covers the spout at all times. Not
only does it take some getting used to to remember to slide it back
(via a button on the inside of the handle) before pouring the water, it
can also happen at times that the piece stays out when the lid is
removed, and then it is a bit tricky to put the lid back on the kettle.
    - The base. While it is convenient to be able to put the kettle back at
any angle (unlike the Bodum which only fit one way), I always fear that
pulling the kettle out with the base from its storage place under the
overhanging kitchen cabinet might over time render the base non-
functioning (I read about problems with the base in a few reviews). So
I always take care to lift the kettle from the base first, then move
the base out and put the kettle back.

But these two points are really minor. What I want from an electric kettle first and foremost is fast, efficient and safe boiling of water, an appealing design and years of trouble-free performance. So far, the Krups delivers it all very well....more info

  • Great design, poor quality
We have gone through three of these kettles in about four years. I like the design and the fact that it brings water to the boil much more quickly than any other kettle.

On the first one, the thermostat failed after a few months. Krups couldn't repair it and gave us a new kettle. On the replacement kettle, the switch (that's operated either manually or by the thermostat) failed after less than a year. Krups again gave us a new one. This third one had a broken lid after a few months. I bought a new lid earlier this year, which was available only in black, although the original one was white. It cost $20 including postage. Now this third kettle again has a broken thermostat and will not shut off automatically.

Overall, a very nicely designed product but very, very, very cheaply made....more info
  • Fair Product
Was disappointed in the quality of this Krups Electric Kettle. The base is made from cheap plastic and the top portion of the kettle contains much plastic as well. I purchased a Breville electric kettle a few months prior to this purchase and will be sending this Krups back and getting another Breville. Some company needs to come up with a totally stainless steel model (lid and all). Breville model is more elegant, better design, and has less plastic exposed to boiling water and steam. ...more info
  • Ouch!
We ordered one of these for the office. While it does an excellent job of quickly heating water, many people have complained that the "cool touch" surface is nothing of the sort. Because of the design of the handle, your hand is likely to come in contact with the body of the kettle, which in my experience is anything but cool after heating water. We generally make a full kettle, so perhaps it's less of an issue if you are only heating a cup or two....more info
  • 15 months then it broke...
I had this tea kettle and although it was hot on the outside after boiling water (like my old stove-top one), I was pretty happy with it. Then after 15 months it stopped working. There's something wrong with the on-off switch or the way the lid connects and it will no longer boil. I talked to Krups to find out if it were fixable and it doesn't seem to be. The lack of longevity is very frustrating. I wish things were made better....more info
  • Disappointed
I have used electric kettles for many years and they are the best way to boil water -- they are faster and more energy efficient than the stove-top kettle and you don't risk burning them when you forget that the kettle is on the stove. My old electric kettle died and I started looking for a new one.

An electric kettle is a simple device and could be made to last for many (i.e., at least greater than 10 years). Unfortunately, manufacturers are making things as cheaply as possible and charging premium prices. You will find as you read the reviews for most kettles that people complain about the quality of their construction and their correspondingly low life times.

An electric kettle should boil water quickly, should be easy to clean, should (in my opinion) be stainless steel throughout and should not have features that are obviously made to break. I don't mind if the kettle gets hot to the touch - I just use the handle to touch it just as I would a stove top kettle. This Krups kettle does boil water quickly and it is fairly easy to clean (and does get hot). This said it still has flaws.

    1) The inside top inch(or so) of the kettle is made with plastic. The lid is also plastic and must be aligned just right before it will properly fit. Why couldn't the lid be stainless steel and just fit on in any direction as with most stove-top kettles?
    2) The lid also has a plastic mechanism for opening the plastic spout cover. This mechanism is annoying and is made in such a way that it will break in a few years leaving a spout that stays shut.
    3) The water level indicators are made of plastic and run the length of the kettle on both sides (as you can see in the picture). Water levels are somewhat of a convenience if you don't want to open the lid and look in, but they are a weak spot in kettle design being a likely place for a leak to occur. Other water level indicators trap water and create a good environment for mold to grow. The Krups design does not have that problem.
    4) The base of the kettle is cheaply made. It is the standard Chinese 360 degree design. If you read reviews of kettles with this design you know that they fail after a few years. Pending failure shows itself when you have to rotate the kettle to get it to have an electric connection. Slowly the places that work are harder to find and finally it just stops working. That's what happened to my old kettle. This should not happen. The mechanism is very simple and should be able to last forever. I checked with Krups and they want almost forty dollars for a new base if the one you have stops working (it's part number 620029, if you're looking for it).

My ideal kettle would be made of stainless steel, would have a hidden element, would be easy to clean, would have no water level indicator and would have a well built base and electrical connections that are not designed to fail in a few years. Anyone know of such a kettle in the US? (there are many like this in the UK). In the meantime I suggest that we all complain to the manufacturers and demand more for our money. If enough of us write to their customer "service" departments maybe they will pay attention. I would pay a lot of money for a well built kettle, but that's not what we are getting.

At almost $70 I think this kettle is overpriced and not sufficiently well-built to justify the price. I'll keep searching....

  • Top-Notch Kettle in every way !
I had never used an electric kettle before moving to New Zealand, where everyone has one! I quickly discovered why; so convenient, fast, and efficient. Upon returning to the states, I went looking for a new electric kettle. First I just went down to Target and bought the only one they had; a Hamilton Beach pot. Big mistake! It died in less than two months! The search was on for a better pot. After extensive research, I purhcased the Krups kettle and I couldn't be more pleased! It's fast, easy to clean, and looks great. I really like the fact that there is a water level indicator on both sides of the pot (more handy than you can imagine for us left-handers!) The kettle truly boils the water (unlike some kettles that seem to shut off the minute the first bubble is formed). Between my tea-making and my two teenagers instant noodle and instant oatmeal making, this kettle gets a pretty good work-out everyday and its holding up like a champ. I enthusiastically give this Krups kettle a thumbs up!...more info

We love this kettle. So convenient for heating hot water and yet contemporary looking on your counter beside your coffeepot, espresso machine, smoothie maker, whatever. Heats water very quickly! Gets the water VERY hot and keeps it hot for a little while. We also like how the cord coils under the pot itself to keep extra cord hidden and out of the way. Uses go far beyond tea because it makes so many cups at a time, you can use it for heating water for in recipes, making hot cereal, oatmeal, instant soup, etc. I'd totally recommend this to everyone and would purchase it as a gift for someone anytime. • Way of the Future
Krups makes the handsomest kettle available, and it boils water in 2-6 minutes depending on how much it's filled. The heating-element-type smell was gone in a week. (After pouring a cup of "white tea," I realized the smell did not transfer from the pot to the water anyway.) The switch could be sturdier, but maybe it will last just fine -- who can say. • Sick of junk
I purchased this kettle because it was stainless steel not plastic and, because of Krup's reputation for quality I was willing to spend more ---$70 vs $30. After only two and a half months of use it died. It simply would not function. I had to send it to a Krup's service center for repair. After one month it was replaced with a new unit [they were unable to repair the kettle] however I lost a month of my warranty time and it cost me $10 to ship it to the repair center. I complained to customer service about my warranty rights to no avail.

What ever happened to quality and reliability? I would certainly expect this item to last more than two and a half months! As far as I'm concerned this is just one more piece of Chinese junk! I would have been better off buying the inexpensive kettle.

Also, the lid on this kettle is extremely difficult to attach and remove. Although most of the kettle is made of stainless steel there are still some plastic components----why?...more info

I bought this to replace my beloved Phillips electric kettle that was simply wearing out and taking forever to heat. Granted, I had an incredible bias towards the Phillips and would have replaced it exactly if possible...Given that, the Krups does the job one purchases it to do. Caveats are that the stainless exterior gets extremely hot, so I would not want this near kids; it also has a lid that must be removed to fill the kettle, rather than one that can be lifted with one finger; Krups should work on that. It is a very attractive appliance....more info

I have used it every day, several times a day for the past 3 yrs. and I can't say enough about it. It is simply a workhorse!!! Never had any problems with the electrical components or water leakage anywhere or not heating correctly --- everything is working perfectly as day 1! Oh, I almost forgot --- this kettle has the most wattage available on the market today (1750 watts) and as such, heats up water to boiling (in full capacity) in about 3-4 minutes flat. I am extremely happy with my product and would HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who is contemplating purchasing it but hasn't yet. This product is absolutely phenomenal!!! I will purchase it again, if and when this kettle should one day fail me due to age, etc. and finally stop functioning....more info

  • Krups Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle
    Pros:
It looks good and it works as advertised
    Cons:
    It's very loud.
It takes a long time to turn off after the water's already boiling.
The outside gets scalding hot when the water boils (just like boiling water in a metal pan).
The filter in the spout keeps falling out when emptying the kettle for refilling....more info

Nothing but trouble, faulty lid, faulty base ... I have spent two years tinkering, trying to keep it going but alas it has finally become the lame duck of tea kettles.

Our previous kettle T-fal lasted 3 times as long....more info
