Customer Reviews:

  • Works great
Works great. The probe even fit in our newborn's ear. Only thing I don't like is the sticky zipper on the cover....more info
  • One of the few that actually works.
A lot of these types of thermometers don't work too well, but this one is worth the money. It does take some practice to understand how to hold it for proper temperature reading, and I suspect many people who have problems or claim it doesn't read well may be inconsistent in it's use, although I can't say for sure.

The Mabis is fast, seems quite accurate and doesn't require the use of covers that add to the cost and can make it other brands inconvenient to use.

I recommend practicing with it on the people you will use it on most, while they are feeling well. Test in both ears until you get a consistent reading and note how you are holding it in the ear. Like any thermometer, digital or not, the biggest trick is in the way you use it....more info
  • One of the best I have bought
I have bought about four different types of digital thermometers over the last years, for personal use and as gifts. This one is the best. It's small size and back-lit display enabled to put it in my jacket pocket and use inside the plane when I once flew sick - not something I could have done with other thermometers that I had bought....more info
  • I Really Like This
I just needed a handy instant thermometer that worked. This compact little item really gets the job done with no fuss or bother. It is not frightening for children who may dislike being picked/prodded especially when they are not feeling well. You get used to the low beeps which, eventually, do aid in quick relief or growing concern over the presence of a fever. I am a grandmother, so i have tried quite a few of these products over the years, yes, including the old fashioned mercury thermometers and I have found this one to be accurate and very user-friendly. Also, not having to replace lens covers is the best convenience of all..a little rubbing alcohal after use is all it requires. A very nice product that travels well....more info
  • Inaccurate, needs more consistent readings
The thermometer just did not seem to be very accurate and inconsistent. I used this thermometer about 15-20 times. I tested my son, 7 months, my wife and myself. I cleaned the tip each time and each time the degrees would vary by a couple to 5-7. It also builds up with ear wax which you must clean off with an alcohol wipe each time. So you are either using covers or alcohol wipes.

    I ended up buying the
Braun Gillette Thermoscan In Ear Thermometer IRT4520

This item was 100% better and much more accurate....more info
  • Not worth the money!!!
    1) Item looks better on screen than in your hands.
    2) When you first turn on the thermometer LCD screen says, "Lo" for Low battery.
    3) No off button, to conserve battery power.
    4) Temperature is instantaneous but inconsistent, especially if taken in one ear and then the next, usually off by a whole degree. It's far worse when taken simultaneously. You get different results every time.
    5) Unreliable. Inconsistent. Not worth the money. Bad choice....more info
  • Closest to Dr.'s infant reading
My infant daughter was ill with 101.5F fever and gastro enteritis at 4 months old. This thermometer picked up readings as accurate as the anal probe the pediatrician used that same day! Our readings were almost spot on. Clean it with a little cotton swab and menthlated spirits or rubbing alcohol.

I have been using this thermometer with excellent results for about 4 months now. The glow in the dark feature has proven very useful....more info
  • Operator error or just not accurate?
I really like the ease of use of this item. My problem lies with the different results I get. I can take what I think are identical readings in one ear and get slightly different results. Then if I compare with readings from my other ear the numbers get even further apart. I just got an oral thermometer that tracks pretty well with an ear thermometer at our doctor's office. The Mabis ear thermometer will usually be 1-2 degrees different than either of those. I can't rely on it, which is unfortunate because I really love the backlit screen, memory settings, travel case it comes with, and how it beeps to indicate when you're running a fever. ...more info
  • Pure JUNK!!!
I recently had a fever of 104 but when I used this thermometer few seconds apart I got readings of 101 to 102.5 in one ear and 102 to 104.5 in the other ear. Who wants to have to guess which reading is the correct one.

Pass this one by, it's worthless....more info
  • all right by me !!!
This digital ear thermometer by Mabis really helps me take my temperature. I am going through a course of chemotherapy treatment and my doctor tells me that it is imperative that I monitor my temperature at least once a day.

The thermometer is remarkably easy to use and a HUGE improvement over those tough to read glass and mercury thermometers of the years when I was a kid. There's only one button for operation--it couldn't be easier than that! Insert the thermometer into your ear according to the specific instructions that will come with the thermometer. (If you have any questions or uncertainties about how to use this, ask a pharmacist, a doctor, a nurse or call the manufacturer to make sure that you're using the thermometer correctly.)

The thermometer numbers are easy to read and after you take your temperature you can just turn off the thermometer. If you forget to turn it off it will automatically turn itself off after ten minutes. In addition, you don't need to buy probe covers--that saves money. However, some people may want to swipe it down with an alcohol wipe after someone uses it and before the next person uses it.

One caution: this requires a Lithium battery. On the bright side, it has a low battery indicator. On the negative side, you'll want at least one spare fresh battery in the house at all times just in case the current battery begins to "go south" on you.

Overall, I highly recommend this type of thermometer. It's actually rather well constructed and it tells the temperature in large, very easy to read numbers in either Fahrenheit or Centigrade. It also works for children as well as adults--great!

  • Not as accurate as other models
I have used a few different models and brands of instant read thermometers, and this model hasn't performed to my expectations. I realize this is instant read and it takes readings from the ear, both of which make it less accurate. But taking several readings within a minute or from both ears would reveal a great variance in temperature (3-4 degrees). That's unacceptable for me. I got a Braun instant read thermometer and it takes much better readings (consistently gives the same reading within a minute and is close, around .4 or .8 degrees to standard thermometers). ...more info
  • Good thermometer, easy to use
This is a good thermometer, easy to use. It makes a noise when it's done reading your temperature, which makes it easy to take your own. I also like that you don't have to use any disposable parts, which is sanitary enough if you're using it just on your family. ...more info
  • Always reads low, here
We always get temperature readings below 98.6 degrees when reading people without fevers. First time I tried the screen read 94.6 degrees F. And, the readings seem to vary quite a bit. Also, the instructions say you are supposed to send the unit back to Mabis every (was it two) years? for re-calibration at a cost of about $15.

Maybe I don't know how to use it; but, we were quite disappointed....more info
  • VERY frustrating
How would you like to be up at 3am, sick and trying to take a temperature and never get any consistent reading. Last night mine were between 97 and 102. And it has never worked well for anyone in any ear. I am so glad that we saved our mercury thermometer. Still don't know what to do for the babies.

Find something other than this product.

  • Excellent value
Everyone with a child needs a thermometer in the house! Ordered this one and it came pretty quickly and didn't work (something wrong with the battery connect, I believe). I returned it and they even sent me a new one BEFORE they received the broken one. Now THAT's customer service! The replacement works fine.
Super easy to use and no probe covers. A simple thermometer - when you need to know someone's temp without a lot of bells and whistles....more info
  • Works really well!
I really enjoy this product. It works for the children as well as the adults in the house. I really like that there are no probe covers to worry about. It makes it really easy to just check a temp without all the fuss. Nothing is better than a rectal core temp but when I compared it to the tympanic...pretty darn accurate. Mine came with a little case and the only thing I wish was that it was a bit bigger(the case). I have the alcohol wipes to clean it between uses and if I could have some in the case....it would be perfect!...more info

  • I do not recommend this
I bought this almost an year back. Recently, I took it along to our pediatrician's office for my kid's visit and this devise under reported fever by 2 degrees F. This was after multiple readings and taken by me and the nurse. So I do not recommend this at all....more info
  • Very convenient. Love it.
I see ear thermometers being used by doctors' clinics for years now. I always wanted one. But everytime I compare the price with an ordinary thermometer I can not justify the price to buy my own. Now the price of these kind of thermometers have fallen so much that I decided to get one.

You need to compare the readings of your old thermometer to get comfortable with its accuracy. Make sure the entire circumference of the tip is in contact inside the ear when taking a reading.

    Pros:
-Fast reading at less than 1 second
-No probe covers needed. Probe covers are expensive.
    -Price is reasonable
-You can see it in the dark
-You have the option to choose Fahrenheit or Centigrade
-Memory button so you can recall the last reading
-It has low battery indicator. It uses 1 CR2032 lithium battery.
-It comes with instruction manual (which you do not get often nowadays)
    -it comes with a case
