About the Touchless Trashcan
iTouchless trashcan opens and closes without touching the bin. View larger.
The 13-gallon, brushed stainless steel Touchless Trashcan is a patented product that's already widely recognized in Europe. Thousands have been sold on infomercials, QVC, and HSN home shopping channels. It also won the 2002 Invention Show, New Household Product Award. It is a 100 percent hands-free operated, wireless, lidded waste disposal system. The built-in Artificial Intelligent (AI) Smart-Chip knows when you need to open trash can, and it does all the openings and closings for you so you don't have to touch or step on anything.
How it Works
The Touchless Trashcan uses patented, invisible, and harmless infrared technology. Simply place your hand or debris about six inches away from the infrared sensor near the lid. It will open instantly when you approach and will close automatically in three seconds after debris has been released and your hand moves away. The lid will remain open if debris or your hand is within the 6-inch range of the infrared sensor. There are two buttons on the front to open and close the lid manually, and a easy to reach on/off switch on the back of the trashcan.
The Benefits of the Touchless Trashcan
This trashcan creates a germ free, odor free, automated environment. It keeps your hands clean while you are cooking or playing with your children. It also helps prevent contamination, which reduces the threat of certain illnesses and infections. Because the trashcan turns an ordinary chore into something fun, your kids will have fun throwing the trash away for you. In addition, the Touchless Trashcan outlasts most of the step-on and hand-touch cans. If you can't touch it, you can't break it! These cans have been opened 100,000 times in laboratory tests, and they're still going strong. In fact, if you open your can 20 times a day, it can last over 10 years. This could actually be the last trashcan you ever buy, which will save you money, mess, and time.
Technology and Eco-Friendly Features
Professionals recognize Touchless Trashcan as the next generation of waste receptacles. Its non-touch hygienic features meet the immediate needs in healthcare facilities and elderly homes. The new SilenX technology makes the closing of the lid even quieter while the "eagle eye" water-resistant sensor features reliable point-n-lock beam technology. In addition, the special energy saving design of Touchless Trashcan enables its four "D" size heavy duty batteries to support up to 10,000 consecutive openings and closings, or more than one year of use in non-frequent circumstances. There's also never a "fallen bag" problem with the Touchless Trashcan. The specially designed garbage bag retainer ring tightly holds the edges of the bag to prevent it from falling, and it seals the odors inside. You can use regular plastic garbage bags or even grocery bags, so there's no need to buy special garbage bags which many high-end garbage cans require.
The Touchless Trashcan will improve the look of your kitchen, giving it an ultra-modern look and feel. It comes with one year limited manufacturer's warranty and a 60-day unconditional money back guarantee.

- MUST HAVE!!!
I absolutely love this trash can. The sensor is so sensitive, that from as far as 6 to 12 inches away the lid opens. I love that I do not have to worry about it getting soiled everytime I have to throw away items that cannot go down the disposal. The lid opens wide enough to scrape dinner plates. My family loves this trash can.
A great tip for those who keep their trash can in the kitchen or in the house: If you rinse food containers before you put them in the trash (jelly jars, ice cream containers, microwave dinner containers, etc.); and toss about eight to ten moth balls into the bottom of the trash can...before you put the bag liner inside...you will never - ever - have to worry about odors or bugs. You only have to replace the moth balls about three to four times a year. We have done this for more than ten years...our home never smells like we have a trash can inside; we have never had a pest problem; our kitchen always smells fresh.
Please note: if you do not want to use moth balls; you can use cedar balls, blocks; or some other "natural" pest and odor repellent. Just do not use anything that will decay in the dark enclosure.
The ring is not rubber; it is hard plastic. Some on this site recommend that consumers do not need to purchase it. I say purchase it and the adapter. One can easily step on the ring or accidently break it. Currently, we use batteries to operate the trash can. We got the adapter...for the times that we have company: Weekend visitors; parties; holiday visitors; etc..
This is a must have!!!
- iTouchless Stainless Steel Hands Free Trashcan
Love it, it really looks great in my kitchen. I have had no problems....more info
- Pain in the neck, it has been replaced.
I had this can, it was just a nightmare to remove the bag full of trash, it has sharp edges everywhere that shred the bag.
Along with that the auto lid lasted maybe 6 months before starting to fail to open and eventually would not power up, even though we used the expensive power pack (ordered separately of course).
Finally, since it is motion powered rather than heat sensing, everytime you walk by the trash your hand inevitably brushes near enough to open the lid.
- Looks Great! Saves lots of space! Sensor is not that accurate!
Trash can looks very modern and sleek, but few problems while adjusting the trash bag with the rim which is attached with the can. Everytime when you changed your trash bag the rim has to come out and then it take a while to get it fit back in to the trash can. Sensor is not that great and accurate. You got to be very close to Trash can and several times move your hand around it and if your lucky it would open or else you got to open it manually and i dont understand if i had to open manually why would someone spent so much. "Touchless and automatic" no ways..., Plus you got to invest 12$ to 14$ to buy separate 4 "D" Batteries everytime to make it work touchless and automatic which seems to be not so great an idea! I dont recommend this to anyone! ...more info
- Perfect trash can!
I bought this exact trash can from Amazon a few weeks ago and I love it! The dog is no longer pulling items out of the trash the moment my back is turned. There is almost no noise - just a little whir when it opens and then a thump when it closes. The inner band works as it should for holding the trash bag up (13 gal) and keeps the top edge clean for when it's time to wrap it shut and pull it out. I'm careful to keep the sensor area clean and I've had no problems with it opening as I walk by. It works perfectly and just as described. It's the best thing I've bought for my kitchen in a long time!...more info
- iTouchless SS Infared Trash Can
I bought two of these and I'm very happy with them. My dog can't lift the lid anymore, and they are not big ugly and bulky like my old kitchen trash bins. They look great in my kitchen and the finish matches my SS fridge. Some people gave this item a low rating, but so far I'm happy with the item. I hope as time goes by I won't have any of the problems they had with lid malfunctions. I think this is a good purchase for small households as it won't have to be opened so many times, thus wearing out the plastic gears inside. ...more info
- Perfect for keeping lid clean
This has been a great addition to my house, instead of touching the lid everytime you have something gross on your hands, you can just wave in front of it and poof the lid comes up. Easy to load trash bags with no plastic having to hang out of the side either. ...more info
- The Best Trash Can Ever!
I love this trash can. I don't have to touch it when my hands are full of trash and opens everytime and closes itself. I wish more doors would open automatically like this....more info
- Love the product
I purchased this product two years ago and love it. However, there is one issue with it. As other reviewers stated the mechanism that lets the lid open and close broke off after one year. However, my husband was able to repair it by using super glue. This method worked two more times. Now, that trash can is two years old we can no longer repair it. We are now purchasing our second iTouchless trash can. I hope that they will think about selling the replacement for that mechanism so that when it breaks again we can purchase the part needed instead of the whole product....more info
- Cool Trash can
Works great. Looks great. Like its small footprint with 13 gallon capacity in a small kitchen....more info
I love this product so much that when my trash can of 3 years broke I bought a new one right away. The reason the old one broke has been fixed in the newer model....more info
- Great product - Poor customer service
Works perfectly as described.
Only problem was it came dented! The interior styro-packaging was flawless. The box exterior had no evidence of mishandling or shipping damage - not a mark. Contacting iTouchless, I was run through an 8-day "we'll-call-you-back, file-claim-with-UPS, must-wait-5-business-days drill" with multple messages and callbacks. During normal business hours twice I got a recording to leave a 24-hour call-back message. Once they did, once they didn't. I explained it must have been damaged before shipping and was told they would file a damage claim with UPS first. That's simply unethical. After eight days, I was told I had to return it through amazon even though I had repeatedly told them I purchased it through amazon.com. Very unimpressive.
I like the product a lot and will probably hold my breath and reorder. Just hope it arrives intact....more info
- I-Touch Stainless Steel Trash Can
Have had this for almost a month now and have had no problems. Was shocked when it arrived the day after I ordered it with free shipping.
Will be ordering another one for our summer home. Because the top will always be down I think it will help with the fly problem. Recommend highly....more info
- Hate it
I bought the iTouchless garbage can, because it was everything I was looking for, I loved it...at first. It does takes standard 13 gallon bags which I was happy about, I even thought that the bag ring was a good idea...at first. Now that we have been using it for about 1 month, I am ready to buy a different type of garbage can. I HATE the bag ring, it doesn't fit right half the time, the bag gets all screwed up & falls in. I am tired of fighting with the bag & ring every time I need to take the garbage out. It is taking me at least 3 times as long to change the bag as it used to. My husband actually laughs at me struggling with it & says "was it worth it" & I just glare back at him because we both know it was such a bad investment. I strongly discourage anyone from buying this garbage can!...more info
- Can Live Without It, But Wouldn't Want To!!!
Goodness! This is one of those things that you don't know you really need until after you use it the first time. We had the old white plastic trash can in our kitchen, complete with the little white lid that you had to lift up each time you needed to throw something away. I love to cook, and I was getting so tired of having to touch the trash can and re-wash my hands each time I had to throw something away. I'm all about technology but was still a bit skeptical before making this purchase. Quite literally, it sounded too good to be true!
I read all of the reviews on Amazon and decided I was ready to take the leap. This new trash can was my Christmas present to myself! Seriously!!
I anxiously awaited it's scheduled arrival at my home. I busted this baby out of the packaging, barely glanced at the instructions, and had it "up and running" in minutes. Let me tell you--It. Is. A-Mazing.
The size is perfect. The finish is perfect (even though we don't have any stainless appliances--it still matches our neutral white kitchen just fine). The operation is FLAWLESS. It sits in a high-traffic entrance area in our kitchen and does NOT automatically open erroneously. I'd have to say the ONLY negative about this trash can--and it's a TINY thing--is that there is a VERY short delay once you put your hand up to the lid before the lid opens. It's totally not a big deal--MUCH better than touching a germ-y trash can lid, anyway! The opening is plenty big enough, and my husband and I were surprised at how much it holds!
All in all, I would say this is the PERFECT trash can for just about anybody. If you love techie gadgets, this is it! If you're a germaphobe, this is it! Even if you're wanting the perfect gift for your 80-year-old Grandma, this is it!
You won't be disappointed!
Disclaimer: I've owned this trash can for 9 days. I guess it's quite possible it will self-destruct in a month or so, or I'll have to call for a replacement part and get the run-around from customer service (that's the trend these days, anyway), or who knows what else. But the past 9 days have been sheer bliss in our household!!!...more info

- Fun in the kitchen
From Paula Ruthazer:
I bought my first itouchless trash can 2 years and 2 months ago for $100. It was great fun.
Just as the pins lifting the lid wore out, I checked amazon.com to see if another one was available. It was, and for $60 with free shipping. What a buy! I love it and use it at least 50 times a day. Also, the pin system used to lift the lid was improved to make it it even better.
Thank you i touchless, thank you amazon.com.
- Everybody Should Own One of These!
This is the greatest thing ever! The process to change out bags is slightly more involved than with our old garbage can, but this removes so many other minor inconveniences regarding trashing things...it's hardly a worry.
Bag never falls into the can, perfect size for the kitchen, and even looks great! Can't imagine finding a better item at a better price......more info
- LOVE THIS TRASH CAN!
I've had this trash can for a few months now and absolutely LOVE IT!!! I have had absolutely no problems with it and my batteries are still going strong! I love not having to open a cupboard door or a garbage can lid when my hands are full of yucky garbage. This was money well spent! ...more info
- Plan on replacing every year.
I love this trash can. Is very convenient. But have had two in the past two and a half years. The mechanism that allows the lid to lift and lower breaks after about a year. There isn't any way to repair this problem, just have to purchase a new one. After two I am going to try a similiar product but different manufacturer. ...more info
- worth the money
We bought this garbage can 4 years ago and have been very impressed. We were tired of the spring mechanisms breaking off all the standard plastic kitchen garbage cans, and thought we'd try this out. The batteries last an amazingly long time. I think in 4 years we only had to replace them twice after the initial ones died. It opperates as expected. I like that if you want the lid to remain open you can just press the "open" button and it will remain open until you press the "close" button. Otherwise it opens when your hand gets near the sensor and closes automatically a few moments later. The reason we just purchased a new touchless garbage can to replace our old one is because our sons lifted the lid off improperly a few too many times. You should remove the lid (to empty the trash) by lifting at the base of the lid (which is slightly weighty), but they would lift it by the part of the lid that raises instead. This caused damage to the gear. My husband was able to realign the gear back in place a few times, but now it's time for a new one. For the record, we are a foster family with 6 kids, so our "wear and tear" on items is beyond that of most families. The touchless garbage can is far sturdier than the plastic Target or Walmart options. We have had this second one for a couple months now, and again, we are extremely happy with it. ...more info
- Simply the Best!!
Being a germaphobe this is best thing ever! I love the fact that when cooking I don't have to touch the trash can and dispose of the scraps as I create them! Everybody should have one! Love this trash can! So easy to use (just waive your hand) and sanitary. ...more info
- Touchless Trash Can
Wonderful product, blends well with other kitchen appliances, very sanitary since we don't have to open and close manually. Nice shape and configuration, small footprint and not obtrusive in it's place by the island.
But I found a similar touch less product in Costco with a combo bathroom trash for much less than what we paid for. I think a reassessment of the pricing is due....more info
- Auto Trash Can - Amazing!
Bought this for my husband and I and for my parents. It is very sleek looking, and is so much fun to use. Just put your hand right in front of it and it opens. A couple seconds later the lid automatically closes. I think this is a great buy compared to all the other stainless steel trash cans out there! And if you have a dog that knows how to stand in front of it to open it, you can switch the button in the back so that it has to be opened manually instead. The only negative about it is that the area to put the trash in is a little small, so you cannot put large objects in it, but that is really the only negative I have found with it. Everything else is great....more info
- HANDSFREE FOR REAL
Agrat buy. At last, a garbage can that I cannot brake. Or so I thought, until my brother broke the plastic holder for the garbage bag. Fortunately, the broken piece still works. Overall, this product is great. It uses 4 C batteries, I think, which should last a year. It opens without delay, it also opens when you walk by it. I have it next to a cupboard and have had it sense my presence and snap on my bottom several times. My daughter and I finds this very funny. We enjoy it. I like it and highly recommend it. LOL...more info
- NO ROUND CANS
ordered one of these two years ago, it was round. Not ONLY was it hard to get the bag out each time, but the lid broke, first one hinge, then the other...I'd ordered one for my daughter the year before, and hers was still working, but it wasn't round. After trying to get ahold of the company for the lid/hinge? I scrapped it, and ordered another; THIS TIME, not a round one...the can is a great idea, the CS sometimes is not....more info

- Happy 3 years later!
I first bought this trash can 3 years ago and since then I've purchased 3 more. I keep two at home (one in the kitchen, one in my home office) and two for my business office. In my office I actually use the smaller version so that it can fit under the desk easily. They're easy to clean and look really nice. I didn't give it a perfect 5 out of 5 because every product can use improvement. This one has two areas.
The first is that the bottom can leak if the plastic bag you put in it gets a hole. This isn't a problem, except for the one I used in the kitchen and my son, who takes out the garbage, didn't put the plastic bag in properly.
The second area is that it takes 3 seconds to open before you can put trash in it. For adults, this isn't a problem, but I have 3 kids who tend to be impatient. After a tongue lashing to the kids, this wasn't a problem anymore.
This trash can also has Entertainment Value. For the first 4 months, it would scare the crap out of our dogs. Most people think dogs don't have facial expressions, but they'd learn differently if they could have seen the looks our two dogs gave this trash can and it opened when they walked by. We have a Rottie mix and a pit bull - but these guys were afraid of the trash can!
I love it and I'm getting another one. My plan is to get rid of all the regular trash cans in my home and replace them with the iTouchless trash cans....more info
- iTouchless Hands Free 13 gallon Trash Can
This was an impulse buy - I needed a new kitchen trash can and I didn't see anything in stores that suited my likes and needs. I normally read reviews on items prior to purchase, but not the case with this one(impulse). This iTouchless 13 gallon Stainless Steel trash can is an amazingly refreshing addition to my kitchen, and works incredibly well for daily usage. I love not having to smell stinky trash when I come home or to open and close a lid when I have food covered hands. The ONLY downside is the lid opening is a bit smaller than i'd like it to be so I have to break larger items down a bit, and if I walk to close to it, my arm gets within sensor range and it will open, but that's only due to the placement in my kitchen, not the product itself. I also like the fact that if I have lots of usage at one go, I can keep the lid up until completion. All in all - I LOVE THIS TRASH CAN and would most definatley purchase another!! ...more info

- Who Says Garbage Ain't Fun?
So far, so great. I never did trust these "magic" gadgets that know you're coming. I mean, you gotta be dressed to walk into the kitchen now for fear your garbage can's gonna see ya?
Well, OK, I will say it does work and very nicely. But I'll also say this is something we all can have fun with, maybe bring us back to being kids again? You know, after some weeks, I still tend to jump back when this can opens its gaping mouth at me? Put down those 3-D glasses, this is real!
Then, I suppose you're reading this for the nitty-gritty details on how or whether it works. So I'll open up my most delicate fears so you can have a peek at "The Monster In The Kitchen." Or "It Came From Beneath The Linoleum."
First, putting it together. Not much to that, really. You'll need those big, fat D batteries. So far, one set has done it for me, even counting for playtime. Then, fixing up your garbage bag in it takes little training. Be sure and have the 13-gallon size, they'll work better. Slide it through the rectangle, over and out and drop it in place. Directions are uncomplicated.
Your main thought will be where to put it, or at least where to aim the working part, the front of that gaping mouth. Don't aim it where you stand to wash the dishes. Oh, don't worry; it's not that dangerous. Six inches back and your privates will be safe. Some experimentation might be in order; but just don't fret about it. And for Heaven's sake, stop thinking of Audrey and Gregory putting their arms into the lion's mouth in Rome. I've only had my right hand sewn back on twice. I'm getting quicker.
No, I don't find it noisy at all. You hear it open; but probably less so than you expect. It can get its cycle thwarted by not being able to close when it wants (like those times it eats your hand); but push the button, doggone it. Don't be afraid of the thing. Show it who's boss. Don't let it intimidate you. Toughen up, soldier!
In short, think before you cuss it out. That "malfunction" may be simply a mild miscue that is relieved simply be letting nature or machinery take its course. It does have those two buttons on the front, ya know.
It also has a switch on back. This turns your kitchen monster on and off.... if you're tricky enough to sneak up on it from behind. This takes courage; but you can do it. You'll want it off to move it or change the bag (I haven't yet had to slop through the garbage to do this, much less so than before, actually). Or to lift off the top to more easily find your hand down there amongst the garbage.
Got the idea? This is the future. Do those step-on cans frighten you? I'll bet they frightened somebody when they first came out, the kitchen monsters of their day. Well, this is simply an evolution, an improvement.... a great improvement. It doesn't really eat hands, I'm only kidding.
Finally, I thought this "gadget" was a expensive"toy" myself. Until I started shopping around for plain old no-frills kitchen trash cans. Geesh! You'll be paying almost as much and more for much less fun and and when you get down to it, serviceability. (ADDED NOTE: I paid $60 with free shipping. I see price has greatly increased.)
Oh darn... Did I forget to mention the appearance of this kitchen monster? Well, that's how it fools its victims. It just plain looks too good in the kitchen to do any real harm. Kinda like better than the rest of the kitchen, when you get right down to it. Look at the picture to your upper right and compare it to the unfun cans you see on other pages. Yeah, just look without fear.
Sneaky little gadget, ain't it? Arrrrrgh! I think I saw it move toward me!...more info

I Love this Trash Can! Ive gotten so used to it..I actualy walk up to NON automatic trashcans At others Peoples House and stand there and wait for it to open! LOL. You do need to keep it out f High traffic areas though.. It will Open constantly. Sometimes I walk By it, and it opens.. and I say... WHAT DO YOU WANT??? ROFL! It does work. And batterry life is really Good. Just to tell You how sensative this thing is.. I was Upstairs in Bed. And it is Down in My Kitchen. I was Only One Home at time, and I heard it open! ( yes it is kinda loud, But you get used to it) SCARED the bejesus out of me, I thought someone was In My House and walked past it.. I came downstairs ready to Shoot someone.. turns out it was a MOTH , that had gotten into house and I Landed on the sensor. !!!! Come to think of this, it would make a Great Door gaurd. If burglar comes in that Thing Opens, would scare Pants off him i bet! What is really good about this is you can compact the trash down and that ring gaurd keeps bag from falling down in trashcan, and you not knowing it, and then you have a Big ole mess. It never happens with this ring guard! You get every inch filled of the trash can Liner. I just Use regular tall kitchen bags in it. I Never thought Id ever say I Love a Trashcan.. - Time Tested
We have had ours for 4 1/2 years. It has served as our kitchen trash can in a busy home. I am back to buy another (my fault I broke it). Mine is in an area where people see it as they walk in. It is sharp-looking and free of bag overhang. My pets are not tempted to pull out trash since it is always contained. It has never malfunctioned. The only precautions I would pass along are that (1) it is easy to mistakenly dispose of the big plastic ring that hold the liner when one is taking out the trash; and (2) the plastic sheet covering the battery-pack fell off once and was carried away to the outside trash. I really hesitated when I purchased it ($$), but it turned out to be well worth it....more info

- Very well built. I've had mine since July 2005
I bought mine from SmartHome back in July 2005, with absolutely no problems until now. I bought it because I'm handicapped and needed to keep at least one hand on my walker at all times (automation is the handicapped persons way to maintain independence). It has worked flawlessly until the gear mechanism stripped, and at no fault of its own. The cleaning people liked to force the lid back down instead of waiting 2 seconds for it to do it on its own. I will buy its exact identical replacement from Amazon.com for about 40% less than what I bought it for originally in 2005(best price I've found).
I reccomend it!
Great idea, and convenient when it works...however:
I bought two and one has a sensor that only works 1/2 the time.
The other goes up and down day and night all by itself like its possessed.
It is a beautiful kitchen aide. It has a personality. Trully one of the best purchases I have ever done. It is also a show off item. I am very happy with this product....more info
- Really Nifty!
I've owned this product for at least 6 months now and I am overall very pleased with it. At first, I wasn't impressed by the weight/sturdiness of the steel can. It's very thin and flimsy feeling. The bag liner ring is a little tricky to use and rests on the top edge of the can. But because the can is flimsy, it sometimes slips down into the garbage bag as the bag gets heavier. So, we don't use the liner ring anymore. The lid is heavy, espcially with the batteries in it. So when the lid and can are combined, the overall weight is good-----still easy to slide it around while cleaning or repositioning it where I need it but not easily tipped over. We also got it to keep our dog out of the trash and it works! Our dog hasn't attempted to get in to it. The opening is a bit small because the battery compartment and hinge take up about 1/4 to 1/3 of the overall lid area. The batteries last a surprisingly long time. The sensor is a bit sensitive and sometimes triggers it to open when someone simply walks by it. When I'm in the kitchen cooking/cleaning, I just set it to stay open so that I's not constantly triggering it to open unnecessarily. I feel that this has been a good purchase, and a good value. The convenience of having it open and close without being touched has been a nice improvement in our household given that we have 2 kids and a dog--this can encourages kids to throw away their trash because they think it's fun to use and the lid stays down so that our dog isn't tempted to go digging in the trash. It's also a bit of a conversation piece when company visits. ...more info
