No one knows you like your sister. She can make you laugh or break your heart with a single word. And no one writes novels like Kristin Hannah, an author who vividly explores the intricate bonds of family and, as Tami Hoag said “touches the deepest, most tender corners of our heart.” Now, in her rich, captivating new book, she creates an indelible portrait of two women, once lost to each other, about to come together in a time of exquisite joy and almost unbearable sadness. Sisters by blood, strangers by choice, each stands at a crossroads, ready to confront the betrayals of the past. . . .
Meghann Dontess is a woman haunted by heartbreak. Twenty-five years ago she was forced to make a terrible choice, one that cost her everything, including the love of her sister, Claire. Now, Meghann is a hotshot divorce attorney who doesn’t believe in intimacy–until she meets the one man who can change her mind.
Claire Cavenaugh has fallen in love for the first time in her life. As her wedding day approaches, she prepares to face her harsh, judgmental older sister and their self-absorbed mother. It is the first time they have been together in more than two decades. Over the course of a hot Pacific Northwest summer, these three women who believe they have nothing in common will try to become what they never were: a family.
Tender, funny, bittersweet, and wonderfully moving, Between Sisters celebrates the joys and heartaches that can only be shared by sisters, the mistakes made in the name of love and the healing power of new beginnings–all beautifully told by acclaimed author Kristin Hannah.

- A very enjoyable book
BETWEEN SISTERS by Kristin Hannah
February 9, 2008
Rating 4/5 stars
This was my first book by Kristin Hannah and I loved it! I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the story and how fast I was able to get through it.
Meghann Dontess is a high-powered divorce lawyer and is obviously very successful based on where she lives and how she lives. She goes from man to man, never seeing anyone for very long, avoiding commitments. Her life is empty. Part of Meghann's problem is a guilt that she's lived with for most of her life. She and her younger sister Claire Cavenaugh were separated when Meghann decided to leave Claire with Claire's biological father. Their mother rarely was around to take care of them, and in order to save themselves, Meghann had gone in search of Claire's biological father, who promptly took them in. But Meghann and Claire's father clashed, and so Meghann ran away, knowing she was leaving Claire in responsible hands. But since that parting, the two sisters have grown apart, and every time they do talk on the phone, they fight. Meghann actually took care of Claire as a mother would a daughter, because their own mother was not responsible enough or was ever there to take care of them herself. Being an actress was much more important to their mother.
Now, Meghann and Claire are reunited. Claire has decided to marry a man that she had just recently met, and Meghann feels it's her responsibility to steer Claire in the right direction. Meghann had been out of Claire's life for the past 27 years, but now she feels it's time to do the right thing. Claire, however, doesn't want her older sister meddling. All she wants is Meghann's blessing.
When everything seemed to be falling into place, something happens that may bring short the sisters' new found friendship. I don't want to reveal what happens, but the story becomes a near tragedy by the end of the book, and will have the reader in tears.
In a subplot, Meghann meets a man while visiting Claire and helping her get ready for the big wedding. He's a mystery at first, until the reader and the characters in the story realize who he is, the brother of one of Claire's best friends. His story is tragic and ties in with Claire's, as it will be revealed in the last half of the story. Meghann may have finally found the man of her dreams, but she is afraid to go that extra step. Commitment had never been her strong point, and she is afraid she may get hurt again.
BETWEEN SISTERS was a highly enjoyable piece of women's fiction. Good writing style, characters who were believable, and I was very interested to know how things were resolved at the end. I will definitely be reading more by this author....more info
- Wonderful.....Highly Recommend !!
Having never read Kristin Hannah before, I found this book on a clearance shelf, so I took a chance & bought it. WOW!!! What a great story. I have never read a book that literally moved me to the point of tears, as "Between Sisters" did.
(Truth be told, I was sobbing like a baby).
I was so impressed with this book, I ran out & purchased many of her other titles. She is now on my list of favorite authors & I eagerly await her new releases.
"Between Sisters" is one of her best. ...more info
- Endearing Story of Love and Hope
Between Sisters by Kristin Hannah, is another heartwarming story by this amazing author. I have read all of Hannah's books, and each and every one of her books is endearing and so filled with life's realities. Hannah is able to draw the reader directly into the story and one just does not want to put her books down until the every end! The reader is relating to all the characters by feeling all of their emotions and seeing their world perfectly due to the artistry of Hannah's words.
I love Hannah's books, as they are so full of hope and love, even through the challenges that life presents each and every one of us. There is nothing stronger than love and Hannah portrays that so very well in all of her books. A crisis surely pulls a family together, where the love of one another is able to overcome even the strongest challenge.
Hannah portrays that so well with her latest book on the bond of two sisters, broken apart by life, yet love pulls them and those around them closer together. Love heals, as Hannah so clearly shows. Sisters torn apart by family forces yet brought together again though their love of one another.
Hannah's books are not only wonderful stories, but she also weaves a message throughout her books that just fills one with hope.
I loved this book and highly recommend it anyone! You will not be disappointed! Five stars does not do this book justice!...more info
- great summer reading
This was the first book that I've read by this author and I was very pleasantly surprised. I am going to have to read more by her now. Normally I read Danielle Steel, Lavyrle Spencer, Barbara Delinsky, Eileen Goudge, and Sandra Brown. I am definitely adding Kristin Hannah to my list of must reads. It is rare that a book can make me cry but this one did! Gread story about sisters and the thin line between love and hate that they sometimes walk....more info
- Good book but a little unbelivable
Well the rest of the reviewers have told you the plot premise. It was an ok read. I have enjoyed Hannah's other books much more. As a health professional, the medical scene were a bit far fetched and that was very distracting for me. Won't recommend it to others. ...more info
- Kristin Hannah is good.
I have ready several of Kirstin Hannah's works, and I have never been disappointed. She does a good job of developing her characters, and the plot moves along well to conclusion. Her relationship building is one of the best....more info
- Not my favorite Kristin Hannah but comes very close. . .
I had the hard covered copy of Between Sisters on my bookshelf since it had first been published. Knowing I couldn't carry a book of that weight back and forth on the train every day, I recently ordered a paperback in hopes that it would entice me to finally read this book. After all, I hadn't read a Kristin Hannah novel in a long time and I had once considered her to be one of my absolute favorite authors.
Apparently it was about time! Immediately I felt swept up into the world of the Pacific Northwest, as so often happens when I read Hannah's novels. The cabins and camp ground, despite the fact that I practically hate the outdoors, seemed so inviting, and the way in which Hannah describes the setting, you can almost imagine wanting to visit. The setting, which takes on such a prominent role in the beginning of the book, fades as other characters and more serious issues come to be in the story. But what always drew me to Hannah's novels, and this one is no different, is the element of reality. The settings are so simple and inviting, the characters are flawed in such ways that make them feel real to the reader. The characters have flaws, but the flaws are created in a way that makes you feel sympathy for or appreciation of the character, not in a way that would make you hate the character for being so incredibly obnoxious. Trust me; I've seen so many authors try to do this and they end up stepping over the line and the character suffers. Hannah though, yet again, creates characters that are likable, and even more so, respectable.
I also love how Hannah's novels flow. I've done my fair share of heavy reading in my life, but while the hardcover of Between Sisters seemed so daunting, I breezed through the paperback in just over a week. And as I read, I remembered how much I appreciated her use of language and her simplicity. It is much appreciated in a time when the plots of so many other books seem incredibly over-dramatized and their characters fake and uninspired.
Between Sisters, while definitely a very worthwhile read, is not my favorite book by Kristen Hannah, for I still love and remember On Mystic Lake like no other. I have also read Angel Falls, which I loved, and Summer Island, Distant Shores and Comfort and Joy, which were good, but not nearly as great as the others. Between Sisters, however, has definitely gotten me excited to read what novels of hers that I've missed over the years. ...more info
- Worth 10 Stars!
I don't understand how anyone could give this book less than 5 stars. It's a touching story about the strength of sisterhood bond. I was so moved by both sisters' stories and the growth of their relationship. I very seldom shed tears when reading a book, but this one did it for me. Congrats, Miss Hannah, for giving me a book that I could not put down....more info
- Between Sisters
Reading "Between Sisters" by Kristin Hannah takes the reader inside the emotions of two sisters who shared unhappy childhood memories of a self-centered mother who eventually abandoned them for her own selfish desires.
Two decades later, the eldest sister was most comfortable in a courtroom setting as a hotshot divorce lawyer, while the younger sibling was content to live the simpler life as she helped her father run a family campground. Sadly, they had become "sisters by blood, but strangers by choice" as they led separate lives.
A brush with death and an impending wedding brings the two sisters together after years of avoiding each other over an unresolved past betrayal. They find they have more in common than they had realized as they reacquaint with each other and begin mending their broken relationship.
Except for needing to cover my eyes a few times through the really steamy segments of the book, "Between Sisters" was a well-written novel, and Kristin Hannah is an excellent author.
This story grabbed ahold of me and wouldn't let go. I felt like I was in the story myself. Vey well written, very passionate. Wonderful book....more info
- Be sure to have plenty of time when you open this book!!
Okay, this book not a pensive one, but I fell in love with the characters. I bought it yesterday and finished it last night. I could not put it down because I wanted to know what happened next. It made me laugh and cry. Truly a story about family in general, sisters specifically, but more than that its about love....more info

This is one of the most outstanding books that I have ever read! It has all the elements of a book that can't be put down nor wait until the next chapter. - Wonderful, fabulous! Not enough superlatives for this one!
Claire Cavenaugh, and Meghann Dontess are sisters. Meghann is definitely a surrogate mom to Claire though, as their mom who does nothing but sleep around with men, and is totally into her acting, has no time for the girls. But things change when Sam comes along. This is Claire's dad, and he is bitter that he never knew about having a daughter. He and Meghann don't get along, so Meghann leaves Claire's life for a very long time, causing an estrangement there for sure.
When they grow up though, Meghann who has been more or less living on the streets, is taken under the wing by a caring teacher. She pursues a wonderful career as a divorce lawyer, and rolls in piles and piles of money. Over time, she becomes very snobby.
Claire, on the other hand is very down-to-earth and doesn't mind getting her hands dirty. She owns a resort on a campground and had a daughter Allison unmarried whom she adores.
Meghann is always very disapproving of Claire's very down-to-earth ways when the two make contact. It seems Meghann always knows just how to set Claire's teeth on edge. Especially when Claire meets the love of her life, Bobby, and wants to marry. Meghann of course, is nothing but critical of the whole thing.
Yet, she wants to go to Claire's house and pay a visit, to talk her out of the impending marriage of course, but when she gets there, things change. Meghann decides to keep quiet and help with the wedding and so she does. But the two of them have a lot of hurdles to work through. They get through it, and then tragedy strikes Claire later in this book. It is then when Meghann opens her eyes, and realizes the love she has always had for her sister.
And this is not all. There is a character, Joe, in the story who is just as down-to-earth as can be. When Meghann goes out and gets drunk one night at a bar, these two connect and a flicker of romance is in the air. It didn't seem to matter that Joe Wyatt lived on the streets as a bum. Meghann loved him anyway, interestingly enough. So she had no room to talk about Bobby and Claire anymore. And not only that, but Joe is hiding a painful secret of his own. And when it comes down to saving Claire from a life-threatening illness, he reveals the hero he really is. One of the best neurosurgeons of all.
- Good story, left me wanting more
I thoroughly enjoyed this book - all the characters were interesting, although their inability to figure out the common people in their lives until the end was frustrating.
I made the mistake of reading the editors review while I was in the middle of this book so I knew everything that was going to happen. I still found it difficult to put down, however. I was so caught up in the characters that I found myself laughing, crying, frustrated, disappointed and happy at various points.
My only disappointment was the ending - she wrapped up the sisters story well but left me wanting to know a lot more about the other key relationships and how they got to where they were in the final chapter. I hope Kristin Hannah develops these characters in a future book....more info
I thank Kristin Hannah for a wonderful book! She may just become my favorite author! Claire and Meg havent been close in years, until Claire gets bad news and Meg takes matters into her own hands.
