Product Description

The Omron HEM-650 Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor with APS (Advanced Positioning Sensor) uses Omron's patented IntelliSense technology, which inflates the wrist cuff to the ideal level with each use and offers fast, personalized, and automatic inflation for maximum comfort.

Wrist blood pressure monitors are portable, accurate and simple to use. They provide a convenient choice for those who want a second unit for away from home or who have trouble placing a cuff on their arm. No adjustments are required to select an inflation level--especially convenient for hypertensive users and for people with certain arrhythmia or heart disorders, because their blood pressure is more likely to fluctuate. And with the HEM-650's 90-memory recall with date and time stamp, as well as averaging capabilities for the last three readings, you can track your blood pressure and pulse progress as your work towards a healthier lifestyle. The HEM-650 also features a system that detects an irregular heartbeat, giving you an even better understanding of your heart's health. Plus, you'll have additional peace of mind knowing that the HEM-650 comes with a 5-year warranty.

Because the HEM-650 has a wrist cuff, it is particularly helpful if you have a larger than average sized arm. The monitor fits those with a wrist size of 5.25 to 8.5 inches, and it ensures easier and more comfortable use. Note, however, that a wrist monitor does require proper positioning of the device at the heart level. Correct cuff positioning is critical when monitoring blood pressure, fortunately, the HEM-650 features an advanced positioning sensor that automatically confirms that the cuff is level with the user's heart, thereby ensuring an accurate reading.

It is critical that when using a blood pressure monitor the cuff is the appropriate size and is properly applied. An ill-fitting cuff or an incorrectly-applied cuff can result in inaccurate readings. Consult your doctor or the included instructions for the proper application of the cuff.

Q&A - Wrist Blood Pressure Monitors

This helps ensure that each and every reading is accurate.
What is Important to know about your Blood Pressure Monitor?

  • so easy...
hi, I am one of these clueless people who have difficulty with machines that have a lot of buttons for programming. Also I have hated, absolutely hated, did i mentioned hated having my blood pressure taken (i have this strange fear that the cuff is going to squish my arm and break my bone...i find myself panicking.. i know, stupid, irrational..whatever).

Can you imagine my surprise to discover this? I didn't even know wrist monitors even existed. Thank you Amazon. The review that cinched it for me was that a lady bought it for her aunt? in her 80's who finds it easy to use. Okay! If she could figure it out, so could I. I love the big display, all the cool beeps and then the correct beeps for correct positioning, also the memory storage of readings. It's my new toy right now. I know i am supposed to wait 15 minutes (ie rest) and not have eaten etc for 30..(is that why they make you wait so long to see a doctor for your appointment?) but i have been taking my readings at various times and activities during the day and night, just to discover how my blood pressure varies with whatever i am doing. Fascinating.

So glad i got this. It has taken the terror out of having my blood pressure taken (yipeee) :) Oh yes, and it was half the price on here as it was in the drugstore, yay!!!...more info
  • Inaccurate BP Monitor!
I purchased this monitor because it is more compact than an arm monitor and was prepared for some loss in accuracy. However this model is so inaccurate that it is utterly useless. I took repeated measurements using this monitor. The measurements were were way off, typically by about 25 points for systolic and by about 15 points for diastolic compared to the BP monitors at the hospital where I work. ...more info
  • Excelent
I was on need of a simple to use blood pressure meter and this is it, My doctors have suggested to get this brand and I am happy I just got one with a real good price....more info
  • Handy, portable BP device
So far this Omron monitor is working out very well for me. It is easy to wrap around the wrist and appears to give reliable readings. The results are easy to read on the display and a memory "saves" them, which may make consultations with the doctor easier.

The only inconvenience is that once in a while it is difficult to start a reading because either the device or my wrist is positioned the wrong way. Omron would say that this is an advantage in that the machine will not allow a false reading, and from a safety perspective that is probably more important than being 100% convenient.

Overall I am very pleased with this deevice and I know I will value it even more when I travel with it in its compact carrying case....more info
  • Very convenient
The HEM-650 is very convenient because you don't have to take clothing off to reach a bare upper arm. It does take some experience to get a reading, however. With a pressure cuff and stethoscope you can get an accurate reading on almost anyone, not this device. Frequently it takes a while to get it to start to register as you raise and lower the patient's wrist to a level the monitor accepts. I also found it just won't start on some thick wrists. With most people it works fine. ...more info
  • Not Accurate
I did not purchase this from Amazon but thought that I would add my opinion as I frequently research items here. As with the other reviews, my unit seems to be consistantly about 20 points low and it does sometimes give very low readings. I've checked it against my doctors cuff and my daughter checks me periodically with a manual cuff. I haven't had the problems with the positioning sensor like other reviewers say that they have had but the product is not accurate....more info
  • So easy to use.
I've purchased two of these as birthday gifts. Both recipients (in their 60s) are pleased with how easy they are to use and at least for now are fairly accurate. I previously purchased the more expensive version that comes with a CD to keep a log of readings on your computer. The HEM-650 has everything but that feature. I have been very pleased with mine as well--easy to use and thus far is very accurate....more info
  • My Review
My Omron HEM-650 has been working very well after turning off the APS. Before I was instructed to turn off the APS, the monitor would not inflate.
Since turning off the APS, it has worked fine.

So far the unit seems to work well. It may be a little off as opposed to the professional one used at the hospital. However, it is not significant enough to make that much of a difference. It still provides me with a relative pressure to make sure everything is OK....more info
  • Omron HEM-650 Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor
Great product with consistent readings. I did turn the Advanced Positioning Sensor off though. The APS detects if your wrist is in the correct position but I found at times that I would have to have my wrist up in the middle of the air to get the alarm to shut off and I felt that was incorrect in order to correctly take your blood pressure. I found that at times it would take 4+ tries to get the alarm to shut off. I want to wrap the monitor around my wrist, set my wrist to a correct position that most who take thier blood pressure on a normal basis are aware of, turn the thing on and forget about it. Alarms? Forget it.
Other than the APS, I would recommend buying this monitor. Great price and all in a small package....more info
  • Omron blood pressure cuff
Omron HEM-650 Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor is great piece of equipment. I am a Home Care nurse and this item is very accurate. Of course, when in doubt or need to double check the handy manual BP cuff and stethoscope is always with me and the difference in measurements is so minute. I am very happy to be using this monitor. I am also pleased with the service and cost thru Amazon, thank you....more info
  • It works pretty well

  • Amazing Wrist Type BP Monitor
I was surprised to find out that my bp reading taken from this monitor was between the readings taken from a mercury type bp monitor and a bi-metal type bp monitor and that is how accurate this product proved to be. On top of this, its APS(Automatic Positioning Sensor), Averaging of the last 3 readings, Irregular Heartbeat Detector and Hypertension Warning make this product outstanding from the rest of the other makes & brands.

I highly recommend this product to those who expect more at a very reasonable price.

  • Great BP Cuff
Once you get used to positioning the arm at the perfect angle, this is a great machine. Although you can also turn that feature off, I find it valuable to make sure the arm/wrist is in the same position to start checking BP and the arm must stay in the correct position to get a reading. Great Product. Use it every day....more info
  • Great! -- with a little coaching (read on...)
This small, inexpensive, very handy, quick-results unit is one of the best health-care items I've ever bought! Two simple hints will help you get great results with it (more on that in a moment).

I assumed that this little wrist cuff couldn't possibly be as accurate as the big ones, so first I tried arm-cuff models; but I still needed something more handy and so I bought the HEM-650 figuring I could return it if it didn't work well. Actually, it matches my doctor's (and my big arm-cuff's) readings perfectly. It's very portable and fast, and that means I don't skip checking my blood pressure. I can take it with me on trips, even on short walks. It's small and unobtrusive, so I can use it at work or home; it's nobody else's business that I am dealing with high blood pressure, thank ya!

    Now, the two "hints":
    1) Any monitor, including this one, can give slightly varying readings if the cuff is much above or much below the level of your heart. That can happen even when it's in the zone where the auto-positioning sensor (it tells you when the HEM-650 is approximately even with your heart) allows it to take your pressure. Readings can also vary a bit with changes in wrist and arm orientation.

The EASY solution: Each time, start your monitor, then just put your fingertips high on your opposite arm -- at the top, just below where it joins your shoulder. Touch the same place every time; that places the unit level with your heart, and it's always in the exact same orientation, so it gives perfectly consistent readings!

And "hot hint" 2): you should WAIT three minutes before taking your pressure a second time with any wrist cuff. An arm-cuff takes measurements from blood vessels deep in your arm, but a wrist cuff senses arteries that are very near the skin. It takes a short time for those near-surface vessels to rebound from the pressure that taking a measurement puts on 'em. So, wait! Taking it again too soon gives a shifted reading! A 3-minute wait = great results.

Minor reservation: the beeps of the position sensor are a bit faint; that's not much of a problem since there's also a clear visual indicator. Otherwise, this is a great, high-quality, very portable, quick-use monitor at a bargain price....more info

  • Impressed...........
This is my second Omron BP wrist monitor in 10 years. Overall it is very impressive. However, like so many high tech things they tend to pack so many extra features that to some degee it takes the simplicity out of using it. Like my first unit it is very accurate and easy to use, however it is very sensitive and must be held in exactly the right position over the heart. This is not much of a problem but takes getting used to. The design is very well thought out and the quality is very good. I would buy it again in preference over the other brands and models. Nothing wrong with the price either....more info

  • Omron HEM 650 Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor
I can only have my blood pressure taken in my right arm, and I don't get good readings with the traditional BP monitors. This works great, is easy to use, and has fantastic memory functions. My only complaint is that you have to move your arm around to find the right position for the monitor to work, and sometimes that takes a little time. We gave one of these monitors to my elderly father-in-law, and he kept saying it didn't work. He didn't have the patience to move his arm around, and we don't live close enough to teach him how to do it. So it may not be the right monitor for someone who doesn't have patience, or for someone that you can't sit down and teach how to use it....more info
  • Terrific product!
I give the Omron HEM-650 four stars only because I don't have anything to rate it against. I was looking for a product that was accurate, easy to read and easy to use and this wrist monitor does all that ... and more. I give it my full recommendation!...more info
  • Erratic...and unacceptable
This product is totally unsatisfactory as a health monitoring aid. The results are erratic and not reproducible. It gives WIDELY different readings on left and right wrists (Yes, I changed the calibration as directed.). It does not agree even "in the ballpark" with an automatic arm cuff model OR a manual cuff/stethoscope. The much-vaunted APS system is a joke, inflating and registering only at crotch-level when on the right wrist!?! Steer clear of this product; mine was returned after a very frustrating afternoon of trying to get it to do ANYTHING in a repeatable fashion....more info
  • Fast, easy, compact
After a rocky start, the Omron HEM-650 has proved itself. Out of the box it took a reading as described in the instructions. Subsequent attempts failed. Finally return it to Omron as instructed, it came back 19 days later repaired, and with the technicians report - a pin-hole in the air bladder. I have been using it at least once a day since with no problems Easy to apply, automatic memory storage of blood pressure, pulse rate with date and time. Hard storage case for protection....more info

  • Very Consistent and As Accurate As My Doctor's
I bought the Omron HEM-650 because I have high blood pressure and I need to monitor it daily. The LifeSource UB-512 was recommended by a friend who has one. It seemed to be accurate as my doctor's, but after a few days with it. I noticed the readings were too inconsistent from reading to reading, all within a minute of each other. I decided to purchase the number one recommended unit out there, the Omron HEM-650. The Advanced Positioning System it uses takes a little getting used to because it will not take a reading if your arm is not in the right position. However, I get consistent readings each time as accurate as my doctor's....more info

  • Good design
Checking blood pressure at grocery story or pharmacy or at Doctor's office is not alway that convinent. So, I bought this little gadget. I am amazed how easy it is to use. I like the automatic start featuer. It start measuring after sensing you have placed your arm in the right place.

  • Display not working right after the measurement
Got this for my mom who lives in a different state. She called after 2 months receiving it. When I asked how was the new BP machine working out comparing to her Walgreen brand. She said, there is no display after the measurement. It is not a battery problem because all other displays are working.

It is totally waste of my money. I should have gotten one from Walgreen, where she can return anything.

  • Awful product does not work for me
I have been a medical professional for many years in the past. I know how to take pressure. I have had an Omron self BP cuff for about 7 years and it just got tuckered out and not doing its job any more so I decided to try a wrist model since I have trouble with my right hand and it is hard to pump the bulb to get the blood pressure.
This thing did not work for me at all, I must have gotten a bad one. At first it was giving me a wonderful reading of about 140/72, I wish, I normally can't get below 150/80, I was 158/88 last week at the Doctors office.
This morning when pressure is usually high this machine registered 63/44
I am dead and don't know it yet. If you buy this make sure you can take it back, I bought it at a local CVS drug store, it cost more but now I don't have to waste time and money on shipping it back. Make sure you can test it first. I am going back to the manual unit. This is not a product you want to fool with, it literally can mean your life. ...more info

  • Piece of Junk - Don't Buy - You'll be sorry!!!
This product is a piece of junk. It does indeed have a Advanced Position Sensor and an audible indication. The advanced position indication requires the device to be in the proper position and indicates when it is by beeping. The beep is so low as to be almost impossible to hear . . . no matter if you have perfect hearing . . . you will not hear the beep. If the battery is just the slight bit low it fails to work and the battery indicator does not indicate the low level below which the device fails to work. Forget about using it on your right arm, you can not hear the device when it is in the proper location and you can not see the face of the device when on the right arm. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!! YOU WILL BE SORRY!!!...more info

  • Omron HEM-650 wrist monitor works exellent AFTER you get the hang of it!
Once you understand the "Heart Monitor" function and how to position your wrist/forearm and lightly support it with your other hand it works each and every time flawlessly. I just let it automatically "record" each check with It's memory function. Then any time I want to, I just press the memory button repeatedly and scroll through the last 90 pressure tests with date and even the time taken displayed. I have also taken it to the doctor to let him scroll too.

As far as the "Rhetoric" I have heard in my clinic about wrist units not being as good as arm units, well, that may or maynot be true. But people like me are not using them in a Hospital/Clinic environment, we simply need to keep an eye on things. When I can scroll through the previous 90 tests, I think anyone would be hard pressed to say it's dangerously innaccurate if at all, and isn't doing just what it's designed for.

As for Function it gets an A++ over ANY arm unit. Sitting on my couch I can reach over and grab my wrist unit in it's small plastic box (small enough by the way to just leave it right there on the end table at all times. Arm units not so sure?) slip the unit over my wrist with no gyrating on an arm. I then move my wrist across my chest (like pledge of allegiance)and that's it. What could be easier for home use. Certainly not an arm unit!

As far as OMRON goes, they are rated good in CR. I am pleased I got my HEM-650 I do not wish I had a free "do over" because, I'd get the same one!...more info

  • There are much better products out there
This item (Omron HEM-650) is difficult to use. It has to be lined up just right in a certain location near the heart and the elbow held in place with your other hand, to avoid movement. In that odd position it's no wonder you have to hold on. In my view this device is definitely not designed with people in mind, especially older folks. This is not a simple strap on and start device, as most others are. For that reason alone I would not rate it with any stars at all, if given that option....more info
  • Works great!
This is a great little product. I take my blood pressure every evening. The big numbers are easy to read. Remember to read the instructions and hold onto your elbow while holding the monitor up to your heart. Love it!...more info
