Customer Reviews:

  • It Will KILL YOUR OS
What a peice of junk, versions 7.10 and 7.11 completely crashed my XP Pro three times. It is buggier than my compost pile and a lot less useful? In two weeks they released versions 7.10 to 7.14. 7.14 seems at least stable enough to run but is still buggy and will give you a different system analysis status everytime you run it? The antivirus which is updated hourly says it's definitions are 22 days old which coresponds to the date of the last major product update. in other words they keep patching their junk with junk and it is deadly and dangerous for your system....more info
  • Don't buy this
I have version 6-which although not perfect generally does a good job. Anyway, I upgraded to version 7. A huge mistake. The program takes forever to operate-when it works! The only way was to keep re-installing it-eventually I ran out of times to do this. Luckily-I still had my license for version 6-and re-installed this-after getting rid of 7. Install 6-but don't waste your money on 7!...more info
  • If you have Vista DO NOT BUY THIS
This completely crashed my system and I had to erase my hard drive and start over. I have Vista and bought this product because I have used it before (XP) and the box said Vista ready. I installed and it said to download 7.1 which I did. It then said to reboot. When I did, only an old Dos looking screen came up saying I had a corrupt Win file. I couldn't even boot up in safe mode. I couldn't go back to the old system, I was stuck. I wrote to them (iolo) requesting help but didn't get a response. I am extremely disappointed in the product and support but maybe you can benefit from my mistake. If you have VISTA do not buy!...more info
  • System Mechanic 7
System Mechanic 7 was supposed to be Vista compatible, it isn't? It wouldn't even install on my machine. I'm running Vista 64 incidently. Anyway, I took it to another computer that was running windows XP. It installed ok but then refused to run. When I clicked on the icon nothing happened. What happened to quality control??? Programme testing, anyone??? I don't think I will buy another Iolo product. A waste of money and an absolute con!...more info
  • Destroys Operating Systems
This software will corrupt you registries and lead to operating system crashes and freezes...(Windows XP Pro on a Dell Dimension 8200 with a Pentium 4 to be exact). ...more info
  • Absolute junk!
It is hard to know where to begin describe the problems with this software. Suffice it to say that it took hours for me to get rid of it completely, and involved editing the registry by hand. If I had not done so, my computer would have acted up forever. Do not buy this software. Do not even take it for free....more info
  • incompetent system mechanic
I had bought System Mechanic. Every time I ran a cleanup it removed my HP printer setup. I gave up....more info
  • Mech 7
worked OK. Then stopped and asked for more money. I did not buy it to get shanghi'ed for more cash. The damn thing should keep working. I did not pay for a time period program. Would not buy again....more info
  • Really bad software getting worst
I owned System Mechanic 6 before I updated to System Mechanic 7. It wasn't too good so I wasn't expecting much. I finally turned off any automatic settings since it deletes all of my cookies and just never helped. I used it to find some problems and loved Kaspersky firewall and Anti-Virus but to get any value out of System Mechanic you have to be an expert and if you are an expert you don't really need a product like this. I "upgraded" to 7 because it has virus protection and allowed you to put it on up to 3 computers. I have 3 computers; mine, my son's and my daughters. I didn't know that they pulled Kaspersky Anti-Virus which was great and put in some piece of junk. It hangs during the install trying to install a plug-in for email. I let it run overnight and it never finished. It doesn't find virus software that Kaspersky did. The Defrag is worst than what comes with Windows XP and since I really do want to defrag my drives I ended up buy O&O Defrag which is expensive, but works well really improving my computer for games like Flight Simulator X (FSX)

If you don't know what you are doing this software can really mess up your computer if you do know what you are doing it will not help you. It allowed a program to mimic Quicktime's update and run at startup. When I had it look at startup programs instead of showing me the programs so I could delete it the program just told me everything was fine. I spend more time fixing problems on my kids computer than I would if I just let them run with no protection untill it blew up and reinstalled XP every couple of weeks. ...more info
  • Very risky software
Using this product is like playing Russian Roulette. After using it my Incredimail application was worthless. Can destroy many important system settings. ...more info
  • Great disappointment!!!
I was a user of System Mechanic 6 with no issues. When System 6 helped me through some very serious computer problems I happily upgraded to Pro7. Nothing but nightmares: system lockups, error message one after another on startup and during operation. If Pro 7 was to keep my computer healthy, why didn't it fix these problems? After 3 unanswered requests for help from their "free technical service" I gave up. It took several days to uninstall Pro7 and I am back to using v6. I am using XP with SP2, so maybe other systems fare better....more info

  • SYSTEM MECHANIC 7 PRO
I HAVE USED THIS PRODUCT NOW FOR ONE YEAR AND JUST RENEWED MY SUBSCRIPTION. IT IS SO GREAT FOR KEEPING MY COMPUTER RUNNING SMOOTH. IT DOES ALL THE WORK FOR ME! ITS SO EASY TO USE! • Completely Disappointed in Version 7 Pro.
I have used version 5 and 6 and was very pleased. I am not saying it was the very best but it worked well for me and caught a lot of problems. Then my version 6 stopped working so I thought I would just upgrade. That was a huge mistake! System Mechanic 7 Pro is just not up to par. It caused my computer to crash a few times and now after getting the updates for the firewall and anti virus it is a bit better but now the firewall keeps shutting down. My system is running very slow and shut down take much longer than it use to. I wish I could return this product and find something better. Unless iolo makes some major changes and fast I will never but another one of theri products. I would recommend you find another program and do not buy this. ...more info
  • did job
only used the just purchased IOLO "System Mechanic 7 Pro" once so far...to recover lost photos off a secure didital card (that came up with a message about formatting). Anyway, the pictures were lost...and.. I recoverd them with the "Recover Deleted Data" program. I didn't have any of the problems mentioned in other reviews. I did briefly run the programs for maximizing computer performance, with no problems. I'm giving it 5 stars just for relieving the panic that sets in when you think you have irretrievably lost your photos. To my way of thinking, if it did nothing but recover our lost vacation photos of the Grand Canyon, it was worth it...more info
  • Doesn't start
What can I say? The programs doesn't start in Vista. I formatted my hard drive, installed Vista, then installed SM7Pro. Once I rebooted and tried to start up SM7Pro, there's no sign that it even started. This software is DEAD!!! The is the best software to purchase and not use. Want to purchase air and not be able to return it? SM7Pro is for you. I was forced to go to PC-Cillin, and that works perfectly. All other Vista-capable software works smoothly in Vista....more info
  • IT FRIED MY OPERATING SYSTEM! AVOID! AVOID! AVOID!
You are lucky. You will read all these customer reviews and AVOID the kind of disaster I experienced today. After activating several of the modules in this software and rebooting MY COMPUTER WOULD NOT GO INTO WINDOWS...IT WENT INTO AN ENDLESS CYCLE OF REBOOTING...BLUE SCREEN...REBOOTING. Going into safe mode allowed me to get into Windows but even after several registry rollbacks the same thing kept happening. Fortunately I had a day old Acronis image backed up on an external drive so I was able to get my computer running again (but with a full day's e-mail and work gone forever). Be warned--this is the worst software ever! Avoid at all costs!...more info
  • Shame, shame...avoid this product!!!!!
I am very disappointed with Iolo. I have used there products for years and until recently was very happy. I have System Mechanic Professional 6 which has worked until about 4 months ago. If you read some of the other reviews you see a trend with the same problem.

I think Islo has planted a bug or worm that makes System Mechanic 6 not work correctly. They want you to upgrade and from what I hear the new version 7 stinks! I wrote the company asking them to fix the problem with version 6 but there excuse is that they are not supporting older versions.

A criminal investigation needs to be done againist Islo for fraud and racketeering on an international level. It is a shame that they choose greed over quality. By forcing you to upgrade is againist the law.

Islo is going to get theirs!

Avoid any products from this company....more info
  • Worst Software I've ever tried
I thought I was smart getting rid of my Norton bulkware, but this software suite is definitely not "sweet." It would constantly scan my disk, and whenever it found a corrupt file a dialog box would pop up. Overnight, 20 to 40 of these boxes would pop up. This would usually crash the computer, prompting for a chkdsk on startup.

After removing the software, the registry still calls for smrgdf to be run whenever chkdsk is ran. Since the program is no longer there, the chkdsk will skip. There is a fix for this, but can't I even get rid of this program? The program fooled me, since it has such a nice-looking GUI, but it's pure trash (from any of my experiences with it)....more info
  • Awful Product not Backed up by Company
I was having some major problems with my computer (viruses, running very slowly, adware, etc) and an apparently delusional friend of mine recommended System Mechanic 7 Professional. I paid full price for it in a big electronics chain store and couldn't even get it installed on my computer. It would say that it was being installed, even if I left the computer on and running for two days! I explained this to Iolo via email and they told me I needed to return it to the store, and if I couldn't return it to them (I couldn't because it had been opened) there was nothing they could do to help me. I guess now I understand that their product is so bad that they would go out of business if they had to give a refund to everyone. Maybe that would be for the best. AVOID WASTING YOUR MONEY ON THIS PRODUCT....more info
  • IOLO System Mechanic Pro is a big SCAM - Do not buy, do NOT EVEN TRY!
I rarely write reviews, but I was so upset by this product that I wanted to share my experience. I downloaded the trial version on my PC and after the trial expired, I decided to keep SM7Pro, although I must confess that System Mechanic did not optimize or even enhance my PC. Then the trouble began. Following installation of an upgrade, the program asked for my credentials. And my login and password were not recognized! After spending days emailing back and forth with "customer service" (they only send you a list of FAQ-style websites), and hours trying to reinstall SM7Pro from scratch, I gave up. Perhaps, the program could still do some good on my Laptop? Wrong! The registry mechanic screwed up so bad that I had to perform a factory-reset. Frustrated by the fact that my demand for reimbursement was not answered, I donated the program to a friend, who runs Vista. And of course....SM7Pro is not compatible with Vista.

    Summary:

    1. useless customer service
    2. harmful registry mechanic - just trying the software can do a lot of harm
    3. moody and inefficient antivirus (try NOD32!)
    4. Vista incompatible

  • Use at your own risk!
I have never written a product review before, but my terrible experience with this product may help someone that is considering System Mechanic 7 Professional.

It corrupted registry entries (Elements 5.0 help file was not accessible, messed up Franklin Covey/Outlook, kept trying to install software using Install Shield). I also kept getting warnings in Event manager. It locked up constantly, and erased cookies that I really wanted to keep during the cleanup process. The firewall blocked me from my server so I disabled it (the firewall).

Finally, I unintstalled the software and downloaded a freeware antivirus program called Avast! Most everthing is back to normal now. Do yourself a favor and check out the free utilities at PC World's website/magazine. And if you decide to install System Mechanic (why would you after all of the terrible reviews?), do yourself a favor and make sure you setup a restore point in Windows so that you can restore your previous settings once you realize that this product is junk!...more info
  • Someone should pay us back!
I upgraded from System Mechanic 6. What a mistake. With version 7 installed, my system ran SIGNIFICANTLY slower - a condition that could not be fixed. The firewall could not be configured to allow my web server to work. The system eventually crashed and could not be recovered. A total waste of several days was had with this piece of crap software. iolo should offer to refund every customer who wasted their money on it....more info
  • Do not buy this product
I agree with everything that has been said so far. This is a deeply flawed program with no technical support. Unfortunately, I already own it and can't return it. Money wasted....more info

after installing this program, my computer will no longer load windows. This program was supposed to help my computer, but only made problems worse!...more info
  • Buyers Beware!!
Purchased the one for 3 pcs. Only 2 pcs with XP Pro were victimized. On my system it "removed" a critical Quickbooks .dll file (luckly I had the program backed up on a 2nd hard drive, the Quickbooks cd wouldn't reinstall the missing file!!), it stopped all mail from Outlook and every now and then I could view a webpage. My hubby's pc: He had a floppy drive plugged into his system, the program would nag until he inserted a floppy disk, no email for him either. After 2 days of use it lost the license, no matter how many times we re-entered the correct key it was always incorrect. Mozilla wouldn't work on either of our systems with this software installed.

We have gone back to System Mechanic 6. ...more info
  • FRAUDULENT PROGRAM
In short, the program doesn't work. I have had nothing but problem with their anti-virus/firewall interface for the last week. THEY HAVE NO CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER. Only e-mail's are granted the privileged of getting their attention. When they do respond it is with links to their FAQ/Knowledge base. I'VE ALREADY BEEN OVER THAT SECTION... I've used SM 5.0 and 6.0 with out any problems, now that they have taken over their own AV/FW programs, THEY DON'T WORK....

EVEN ONE STAR IS TOO HIGH FOR THIS PROGRAM......more info
  • Malware
System Mechanic is worse than having a virus
in your computer. It doesn't work. It is almost
impossible to run the updates it prompts you to
download -- after 20 hours you are stuck at 40%.
    The installation of System Mechanic gives it away;
8 hours looking for the "latest" version. Immediatelyh
after it is installed it prompts you to download
    a later version!
    Getting rid of System Mechanic is a herculean chore;
it insinuates itself throughout the Registry, and has
components that continue running long after you think
you have uninstalled System Mechanic, according to Iolo's
    web site instructions.
    A hint -- get rid of ...\Program Files\Common Files\Authorium\
and everything there. You will have to be in Safe Mode to do this.

  • Swindle
I downloaded the 30-day demo copy form Iolo's website and purchased a license.

System Mechanic 7 Professional constantly loses the licensing and reverts to a 30-day demo, counting down from the day it was first installed. Each attempt to re-enter the serial number is noted by Iolo's validation server and counts as a new install. After too many attempts, I got blacklisted.

Iolo's customer service and tech support are impossible to reach by phone and don't respond to email. I finally had to contact American Express and dispute the charge.

Others who have similarly swindled should contact the California Attorney General's office.

  • Crashed my PC! Iolo ignores support requests!
I thought System Mechanic was great until it crashed my system down to a DOS prompt! During a routine maintenance check Sys Mech 7 found one of it's own BACKUP files had been corrupted so it offered to check it out for me during my next reboot of the machine. Thinking the worst that could happen is to lose a useless backup file I didn't really need I went along with the suggestion the program made to scan my computer at reboot. I also decided to make a emergency floppy like they suggested. Now the computer fails to reboot and says everything's been wiped out except 13 Iolo files and my C drive is now named Iolo! The emergency floppy is unreadable from any computer. I've tried it in three other perfectly good computers and it's totally unreadable. The tech support line is always busy. I finally got thru to customer support after an hour hold & they said "sure, no problem... please hold" and left me on hold over another HOUR! The phone support numbers are long distance calls. To top it off I've sent four email requests for support and they only send me auto responses saying they'll get back to me. It's been nearly two weeks now and no help is forthcoming. My computer's fried and they aren't talking to me... WONDERFUL! My advice? Avoid all Iolo software like the plague. Just take a look at their website support site if you doubt me. Their online help files read like a children's book and tell you nothing about what to do in the event of any REAL problems other than problems buying their products! Of course, all they want is your money and then you can go hang for all they care. I'm demanding my money back and reporting them to my credit card company. ...more info

  • Why I will not upgrade to this version!
When I first used system Mechanics 6, I really like it. It cleaned a lot of junk stuff in my computer. I stay away from their firewall and antivirus, since I like to use Nortron for that purpose. As soon as system mechanic 7 was on sale, every time I run my system mechanics 6, I get a pop up window from Iolo, urging me to upgrade to version 7(for only $29.99!)I tried everything to stop that annoying window with no success. I contacted their tech support with no help either. I do not understand why Iolo forcefully, wants the owners of SM 6 to upgrade to the SM 7.
This is unethical, and it is considered as a build in spam/spyware in their software.
I have made up my mind not to upgrade to their new version, and not to buy any of their products again.
If you decided to use that program, do not use their firewall, use norton firewall instead, and set nortron firewall to block the program(system mechanics) from accessing the internet, that is the only way to block the pop up windows that Iolo wants you to see every time you start their program.
