How to Choose a Room Air Conditioner Compared to large capacity central units, room air conditioners have several advantages. The initial cost of a room air conditioning unit is significantly lower than the cost of central air. Because room air conditioners are designed for cooling small spaces, operating costs are reduced. And, room air conditioners can provide personalized temperature and humidity controls that central systems cannot. Calculating Cooling Capacity Cooling capacity is the critical factor in properly selecting a room air conditioner. Cooling capacity is measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs) and typical models will range in capacity from 5,000 BTUs to 28,500 BTUs. Choosing an undersized unit will overwork the unit and it will not cool properly. Choosing an oversized unit will cost more to buy and operate and it will not dehumidify properly. We can help you to calculate capacity. • Great AC
We purchased the Frigidare 18,500btu air conditioner for our 1,200sq ft garage. It works like a dream! We built it into the wall beneath the window and followed the easy instructions and, other than it's weight, it was easy to install. When we turned it on for the first time, we were very pleased as to how quiet it is. We live in hot, humid climate and within 15 minutes, the entire garage was cooled and very pleasant to work in. It comes with a remote control, has sleep, energy saving mode that when set to specific temperature, it turns off and on when it needs to keep it at that temp. Love it!...more info
  • Crappy air conditioner/heater
My husband & I bought this air conditioner from Lowe's last year. The electronic display stopped responding (i.e. changing temp., turning off) within a month. Lowe's replaced it after much argument (since they installed it they didn't want to return it they wanted us to go through warranty even though their return policy is 90 days) with the same unit. Now it's been a year since we replaced it and obviously the warranty period is over and our replacement unit is doing the same thing except now it first got itself stuck at 90 degrees. Sure glad these things always break in the july/august heat. My husband loves electronics and remotes but I gotta say I think less electronic fancy units probably don't break as much. :(...more info
  • Terrific window air conditioner
I'm a believer in internet shopping and with the high cost of gas we're using it even more. Especially when Amazon offers free shipping and that was a big factor in making this purchase. Plus the amount of information offered about this unit made it appealing and in the end a terrific purchase. This unit is for our 1920s Arts & Crafts style brick home. The carrier who delivered alerted us in advance, let us select the day, and called the day of delivery making it very easy. The packaging was perfect - Frigidaire did a very good job. The instructions are not the best. I wish companies would bring in buyers (people who are not associated with the company or product in any way) and let them struggle with the instructions and learn to create user friendly manuals. Since our house is brick the mounting brackets weren't usable but with some creative thinking we came up with a solution to make it safe and secure. The unit is wonderful, quiet both inside and out and does a great job of cooling. Love the remote and easy to set controls. Would definitely purchase this unit again....more info
