Product Description

Since rising out of the New York City streets over 25 years ago, Russell Simmons has helped create such groundbreaking ventures as Def Jam Records, Phat Farm and Def Comedy Jam, in the process becoming known the world over as "The CEO of Hip Hop." Russell might have helped introduce hip-hop to the world, but he credits his success to his belief in a strong set of principles--or laws--which he shares for the first time in this book. In 12 straightforward steps, Russell reveals a path towards success that can be followed not only by those looking to duplicate his professional success, but anyone struggling to realize their dreams. Indeed, those solely looking for advice on how to build up their bank accounts at the expense of personal integrity should probably look elsewhere. That's because these laws stem from the belief that all success, be it professional or personal, comes from a connection with your higher self. Using examples from his own experiences and observations, Russell demonstrates how tapping into that connection will allow you to get your mind right, find the motivation to start instead of stall, surround yourself with the right people, appreciate the power of hard work and understand the power of karma. But most importantly, this book will demonstrate how it's impossible to receive any sort of lasting success from the world without giving something of lasting value to the world first. That's a practice that is reflected in Russell's own work as a mentor and philanthropist and one that he promotes as being fundamental to empowerment and success on every level. Blending business insight, universal spiritual truths and an inspired sense of purpose Do You! crosses the lines of age, race and background with wisdom that will lift you up and motivate you to pursue your vision.

Russell Simmons' story is an inspiration to anyone who dares to believe that they can achieve their wildest dreams.

Mr. Simmons doesn't reveal any new concepts, secrets or strategies for becoming successful. Instead, he shows you how he applied 12 tried and true philosophies to become one of the most successful music moguls and entrepreneurs in the world. With his unique blend of business savvy, "street smarts," and a sense of purpose, Do You! illustrates how insight, hard work and perseverance can catapult you to heights you never dreamed imaginable. • Not so inspirational
I think the start of the book is great. His laws make sense. The book even inspired me in bit and parts to change my approach to work. I respect that guy for what he has achieved and he has a right to preach in the book. But the book fails to strike me and does not linger in my mind for a long time. Sometimes it just feels like he is just full of himself. His clarification that he is not trying to be full of himself still did not convince me somehow. I would say the best part of the book is that he does talk of things out of his experience and what he has seen around, and not just based on stuff pulled out of the air. ...more info

  • Glad I borrowed a copy to read
This is a good/great book depending upon your perspective.

If you're young and/or lacking a firm direction in your life other than knowing for sure you want to walk the right path and give value/meaning to your life, this book is a great read!

Russell Simmons is financially successful and, according to him, also spiritually successful. He's willing to be a role model and his standing in society affords him this opportunity to use concrete, real life examples that I'm sure readers will truly embrace and take heed to his words b/c it's coming from Russell.

I just found this book "okay" mostly because I've reached the point in life where I understand what matters most, what direction I want to take to my life and I have also clearly defined what the term "success" means to me both personally, professionally and spiritually.

For me, Success = Happiness and being able to be happy with whatever decisions you make in life.

Russell's formula is somewhat different in this book, so it didn't really resonate as strongly with me.

However, I gave this book 4-stars mostly because it's positive, it's personal, it's insightly and it's the kind of book I'm sure will help get some started along the right path to personal and professionally success & fulfillment.

    Just my two cents....more info

  • Do You Motivates, Inspires and Enlightens!
I just had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Simmons in November, 2008 at a conference. I purchased his book and he was kind enough to autograph it for me. Usually I get books and throw them on the shelf; however, this time I actually started reading this book on the plane coming home. I couldn't put it down. I don't usually write book reviews for people, but felt compelled to write one for this book. If you want to change your life, if you want to jumpstart your vision, if you want to apply life's lessons that you've heard before but for some reason it didn't sink in.......I strongly suggest you purchase "Do You!" It has inspired me more than I fully realized. Russell Simmons said many things that I've heard before but never fully grasped. I finally "get it" and I'm definitely going to "do me!" Thanks Russell! • Its amazing, best book on the Market
For all wanna be Entrepreneurs this is a must read. It shows you that if you just stay focused on your goal, not someone else, you will be OK. I just wish it would have been written earlier. Very inspirational, on how if you just Do You, you can still succeed beyond your wildest dreams. In most cases you fail your way to success. . With failure comes doubt and a waiver in one's belief. After reading Do you, it gives you the motivation to stay focused on your goal at hand.

I conduct seminars on Real Estate and most come in with the idea that they will be able to outsmart the system and become rich overnight. Since I have read this book I have it mandatory for First Time Investors read. It gives you a clear example that no matter what the situation at hand is, you can succeed if you first believe in what you are doing. It also helps if you are doing it because you have some affinity to what you are doing, not just for the money.

Most fail in my business due to the fact that they have little passion for what they are doing. Mr. Simmons gave me the added confidence to expand my business. In closing for those who do not like to read I bought the book and also a copy of the audio book to really get what he felt. The audio is good because during your drive you can listen to something motivational instead of all the negativity you hear on the news or the radio. • Knowledge is power ...
And now I see why Mr. Simmons has so much power in the Hip Hop industry. This book is for anyone who has a sincere desire to succeed at any business. It's not that he knows everything, he just knows how to surround himself with a lot of people who know a little bit about everything. He's very focused, and as disciplined as any imperfect human being can be. Someone made mention of the book, The Secret, which I have also read. Russell has apparently read that book or, at least, shares some of the same principles. I definitely recommend this book! ...more info

  • Listen Up! :)
Listen, listen everyone...If you have a question about this book... let me set your mind at ease. This text by Russell and Chris is among the top 5 books I've read in my life. And to put it plainly, I've been reading like a mad-woman since I was 8... so that's what... 20 years?

In any case, this book is SO SO real. It's spoken in true voice so if you're paying close enough attention...you can hear the man speak. I was MOVED...Inspired to read the book. I went out for stamps...and then said...man...I gotta go to B&N to get this book. And I did. Anyhow, the 12 laws, if you apply them, will help you live a better life. The experience of reading this book is akin to Oprah sitting at Maya Angelou's feet... or for you and I, sitting at our grandparents' feet as they school us. This has been my experience with the book. It's uplifting, real, no- sugar coating nonsense and I can feel that its genuinely written. I think I could go on and on...I've been promoting this book to my friends...reading excerpts..because its so real...you'll want to share quotes. Keep a highlighter or pen on hand when you read it because you'll want to take notes.

It does talk a little about his journey to success..but the book is much more spiritual & very applicable to YOUR/ OUR daily life.

Plainly put: it's good stuff. Just flip through it when you go to the book store... (or online) and I promise there will be something on each page that will resonate with your experience.

  • Fantastic Book
"In the end, the overriding factor in whether or not you realize your dreams is going to be you. Not the world. YOU." ~ Russell Simmons from "Do You!"

I didn't know much about Russell Simmons until my friend Robin Sharma (author of "The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari" and "The Greatness Guide") first sent me this book. There's no way I would have guessed Russell would have such a profoundly spiritual, yet remarkably "real" and unquestionably successful expression of his spirituality in the 21st Century.

The New York Times calls Russell Simmons one of "the most innovative and influential figures in modern American business and culture." He's a hip-hop mogul (affectionately known as the Godfather of hip-hop, in fact), producer, entrepreneur and all around rock star. AND, he's a yogi, vegan and deeply spiritual guy.

I like that combo. And I love his book. (It kinda makes me imagine Stephen Covey's "7 Habits" written by a hip hop mogul for the 21st century. :)

"Do You!" is packed with inspiring stories, Russell's wit and wisdom on everything from getting your mind right, living with authenticity, dreaming big and doing your best. It's one of those books you read and at the end say to yourself, "That author is a good person." (Which is always a standard by which I measure my favorite books...)

So, without further adieu, get the book! (And, of course, don't forget to "Do You!" :)

  • 100% Hip Hop
This is one of those must-read books for those of the Hip Hop generation (though it's great for just about anyone). Russell Simmons underscores a lot of the things that many of us who are part of this culture sometimes think about. One can tout this book as a blueprint for success... and it CAN be that. But, to me... it also reinforces that those fleeting little thoughts sometimes should be given credence as they are the gut-instinct type of reactions that can open doors to one's higher Self.

I live and breathe Hip Hop. It is a culture that is at my core... and this book makes me feel like I am going in the right direction with myself. More power to Russell Simmons for showing everyone how to stay true to their vision. I found this book to be mad inspirational and have given out several copies to some of my friends who are also hip-hop-minded.

And, I am glad that he chose to break free from the fundamentalist Christian concepts that have been sold to people of colour as "the saving religion" when it has been traditionally used to murder and destroy our ancestors' spirits. While it is great that SOME people find their comfort in Christianity, it is NOT the only path to "salvation". Each one of us has a brain and a soul... and we actually like to use them to speak/act POSITIVELY about/towards others. Too bad that many FUNDAMENTALISTS act like THEIR opinion is the only one that matters. Be whatever makes you feel at one with "God/Goddess". Overall be a good person on this Earth and love others as you would yourself....more info
  • Interesting read and makes some good points.
Overall I enjoyed reading Mr. Russell's book.
The things I agree with him on are stop procrastinating, work hard, focus, and age is just a number. :)

I am skeptical about vegetarianism being healthier lifestyle choice. I think most health problems are caused by other factors except just eating meat. For example whether one is a vegetarian or omnivore if one is eating more calories then one burns one will gain weight. Also, the issue is not just one of eating meat, but how our food is produced. I do agree though one can never go wrong with eating plenty of veggies and fruits. :)

Also, the religion issue he brings up in the book. As atheist/rationalist some of the stuff he talks about sounds too new agey to me, but that is just my opinion. If Mr. Russel is simply talking about god being a metaphore about finding ones inner strength in overcoming obstacles then I have no problems with that. :)

  • Get In the Head of A Hip Hop Mogul and Leader
The book illustrates and elaborates insights of Russell Simmons, the man who founded million-dollar companies; Def Jam Records and Phat Farm Clothing. You may have heard the 12 Laws, or versions of them before, but the book details how Russell Simmons uniquely applies them to his successful life. Though you may be distant to the Hip Hop world, it depicts the mindset he needed to get from hustling in Queens/NYC in the 1980's, to becoming a multi-millionaire entrepreneur of today. The messages here are to improve and promote anyone's natural abilities. Some chapters do stretch on his use for yoga, but he does work in its relativity. The book also finds a way to heighten the awareness of how large an influence the Hip Hop culture possesses in the world. I especially like how he quotes many different philanthropists and explains it in his own street-wise way. I'm glad I picked it up. ...more info

  • DO YOU...A FAVOR AND BUY THIS BOOK!
Much has been written and said about Russell Simmons. The Godfather of Hip-Hop (which he is affectionately referred to, but does not like to go by) has created a media empire and amassed a fortune in the process. While his riches might be the subject of many articles and interviews, living a life of generosity and sharing blessings are the focus of his new book. Essentially, the book emphasizes two philosophies. One revolves around achieving success; developing vision, getting a clear focus, having determination, maintaining persistence, and working hard - the key ingredients to building wealth. The second revolves around knowing who you truly are (your unique brand of "you") and incorporating YOU in all that you do to make your life more fulfilling. His 12 laws are designed to help you achieve that fulfillment. While Russell does tend to stray from topics and goes off on periodic tangents (don't ever offer him Kentucky Fried Chicken), he always comes back front and center to squarely nail the subject of each chapter, leaving you with plenty of food for thought and inspiration....more info
  • "I'M DOING IT MY WAY", IS NO DIFFERENT THAN "DOING YOU"
I would hope that DO YOU, reach the right the audience. I'm an avid book reader this is my first time actually reading any motivational book in its entirety. I'm 40 years old and I am a HIP-HOPPER. I would like to thank Russell for putting this great REAL BOOK out. You can agree to disagree with this one its not preachy, you can actually learn something about yourself with this book. You don't have to be rich monetarily to be successful I tell people that all time. We all have something to give . I recommend this read for 13 year olds to grandmothers and great. Besides your spiritual chose of books this should be second on the shelf.

P.S. You don't have to be Harvard or Yale graduate to get what he's trying to convey....more info

Most inspiring book I have read in the last 2 years! I found it to be great reading and enjoyed it so much. • Immutable laws of success...
There are hundreds of books trying to sell a success formula out there, what makes this one stand out?

Intrigued by the background of the author, I picked up the book expecting, if anything, a different perspective on what it takes to climb the ladder of success. But going through the chapters, I was pleasantly surprised to find all the familiar concepts we've heard of in the past, albeit with different and very hands on examples from Russell Simmons' life and upbringing.

The book is written in a conversational and easy to read tone, there are a few repeating and prolonged passages on religion, yoga, and vegetarianism that may not agree with everyone, but an enjoyable read nonetheless. A small warning: watch out for the language in a few places.

  • Insightful Reading....
Russell Simmons has a conversational style of writing, which makes this book an easy read. Many of the "laws" he discusses are things we've all heard before; however, because Russell has notable credibility across the generation gap, and a wealth of experience to draw upon, this may very well be the book that helps the information stick. Great job Russell!...more info

I love the audio book. The principles Russell speaks of are so simple and easy to understand, yet we look over everyday. To me, this book slows you down to just really think. Everyone can get something out of this book. I highly recommend it. I really am not the type to get excited about books, but this just spoke to me in volumes. I really think young people should especially get this book because it provides a base for direction in life, growth, and gives tools to help understand "self". I can go on and on. I feel so passionate about "DO You" that if you purchase it and do not like it, pass on to someone who else who may need to hear some inspiration it is worth it.

  • Great Laws, Poor Justifications
I can't argue much with Russell's 12 Laws (if you can even call them Russell's, since he readily admits that most of them originate in the various religious traditions and writings of the world). They are all tight and worth applying in your personal and professional life. What I can argue with are some of the anecdotes that go along with his laws.

For example, when he talks about not allowing money to influence your decisions, he tells the story of how Pepsi pulled out of distributing his drink, DefCon3, because he criticized KFC's treatment of chicken. It is easy for a multimillionaire to turn down more millions, but how can you compare that to some of the difficult decisions that regular people are faced with each day? I bet he wasn't so high and mighty when he was trying to break into the business. He also preaches against eating meat and certain foods and eating more organic products because it is cruel to eat animals (ignoring the fact that human biology is designed for the consumption of vegetables AND meat). Unfortunately, many of his readers are probably young hip-hop kids who can't afford to shop at Whole Foods for the higher priced, healthier foods on his menu.

The other glaring issue is how he continues to give rappers a free pass to put out crappy music that degrades women and Black people as a whole. As one of the first promoters and producers of commercial hip-hop music, Russ is uniquely qualified to support artists while simultaneously challenging them to make more thoughtful and creative music, but he seems to be to afraid to lose his credibility with them. Unfortunately for him, since hip-hop's origins are so rooted in being open and honest in the face of the American power structure, he has already lost credibility with many fans for his failure to keep it real.

Russell's book is good, but it would have been great if he remembered his audience and gave advice that was more applicable to their circumstances....more info
