About Elliptical Trainers Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.
Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.
Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.
High-quality elliptical trainer with comfortable and compact design
Multiple workout programs, including heart-rate controlled, custom, and fitness test
16 computer-controlled resistance levels; upgraded foot pedals for comfort
BioFit design creates more comfortable stride; backlit LCD console
Measures 59 inches long by 26 inches wide by 68 inches tall; 15-year frame warranty
Quiet and smooth. Quiet and smooth. The instructions for assembly were clear and done in sections which made it easy for a novice like me to put together. From opening the large box to final assembly took me 3 1/2 hours. The Ellipitical looks great and is very sturdy. I researched ellipiticals for weeks before settling on this one. It is the best value and product for the money. Highly recommended....more info
Beware of unreliable quality! Not worth the stress! I bought the Schwinn 431 about 3 weeks ago but have never been able to use it due to a very loud creak that seems to be located in the right handle bar. Squeak starts about 10 mins into the session and gets progressively louder. Since I bought it via white glove service from "play it again sports", they came over and tried to adjust it but the squeak would not go away.
Play it again sports offered to replace the machine with a new one but Schwinn would not let them. After much discussion with a customer service manager, Schwinn promised to send a part and a technician to fix it but so far; the part has not arrived and no call from Schwinn.
As I write this review, I have been on hold with Schwinn customer service for close to 15 mins, and no one has picked up the phone. Luckily, I am within the 30day return period offered by "play it again sports" so I am likely to exercise the option to return this lemon!
great machine! very happy. we use it all the time. not too difficult to assemble. great value. you get what you pay for. we're pleased. ...more info
beware incomplete directions If you follow the directions to a t, you will end up with 4 large black washers and the machine will fall apart the first time you use it.In disassembling/reassembling it corrrectly this time, I wore off almost all of the lube grease and can now look forward to one doing it again....more info
Excellent Elliptical After our daughter bought the Schwinn Model 431 Elliptical, my wife and decided we really like it. A solid machine for the money and with 2-3 hours work, not difficult to assemble. Recommend not overtightening the bolts since this caused ours to "squeak". When I backed the bolts off just a bit, it is very quiet. Both my wife and I work out on ellipticals at the gym and this Schwinn has been a great addition to our workout routines. Definitely recommend this machine....more info
Great machine, pending issue........ I paid $749 through Amazon (with a $100 off promotion) and received the machine a week ago. (An earlier delivery date was somehow missed by the shipping company CEVA.) It initially took me about 2.5 hours to assemble plus additional time once I looked over my work and discovered a few minor mistakes. See assembly tips below.
I had to decide between the 430 and 431 and included some observations. Someone noted in a post that the 431 model might be built using a little thicker tubing although I didn't see them side by side to confirm. Schwinn claims the 431 is built for up to 300lbs versus 275lbs for the 430. The mechanics on the two models are the same with a 25lb flywheel providing great stability. In addition to holding more weight, the 431 has more upgrades of which a few seemed worth the extra $150 in my case....the padded pedals, backlit console, a bigger, user friendlier bottle holder (which will hold a lot of other things like a remote!), and added aesthetic touches. The fan is below average at best as it just doesn't produce much of a breeze. The 431 looks more high end than the 430 due to the covers on the arm pivots and underneath the console. They hide a lot of the welding work.
The machine itself is very sturdy and feels solid. I'm 6' 210lbs and it doesn't sway or move. Very quiet! The level settings give a nice range of resistence and options so you won't outgrow this machine. The smaller footprint compared to other makes and models is a huge plus if you have limited space. Also of note, the lenghth of the labor warranty is not 6 months as the description states but 3 months according to the Schwinn website and manual.
Overall, despite the mechanical issue noted below, I like the machine and it seems to be just want I was looking for. I'm torn on the rating because if the tracks weren't an issue, it'd be an easy five. I'll give it a five anyway. Customer service seems to be more than accommodating from what I've read from other posts.
When I contact and get a response from Schwinn, install new tracks, and put some extensive exercise time on it, I'll update the post.
AN IMPORTANT MECHANICAL ISSUE WITH MY MACHINE:
---For those who bought or are going to buy this or another model, take careful notice of how the wheels lay in the tracks (Schwinn calls them Extrusion Assemblies). I got on the machine facing backwards and wanted to make sure the wheels moved equally well. They don't on mine. I noticed even with my full weight on the machine, one wheel (the left one) on each pair didn't move with the same force as the other in it's pair
In exercise position, I can actually move the 2 wheels in question with my hand. This could lead to major issues in the future!!
I lifted the machine from the back as if I was going to move it and I can see one wheel of each pair is not touching the track. One of them is very high off and the other slightly. The one track actually looks like it is leaning left compared to the other. I reversed the tracks to see what would happen and the problem followed the track. The higher wheel is now part of the other pair.
After putting the machine down, I ran my fingers under the sides of the tracks and felt a distinct difference in clearance on the left side of the worse rail which confirms what I saw earlier......one track leans left! Hoping it is just bent tracks and not a frame issue, I'm going to call Schwinn and ask for 2 new tracks.
It's not the kind of thing that's noticable unless you look for it. I don't think the machine will sustain operating properly with most of your weight on 1 of the 2 wheels per side. It could also put strain on other parts.
Take a look at your machine!
A few points to keep in mind when assembling:
1. When you put the arm pivot rod on, it may take some hits with a hammer or preferable a mallet. As I hammered in, I noticed the black spacer coming out the other end so watch for this. It'll have to be put back in place. You also have to equal out the rod by eyesight.
2. When you put the black movement arm wire cover on, don't force it. One side snapped right into the pivot shoulder cover while the other just didn't sit well hitting one or more of the bolts. If you loosen the bolts holding the arms (there is some play there) and retighten it in a slightly different position, the cover should fit better.
3. When you attach the console, make sure you run the long wire though the center and run the fan wire up though the hole at the top and connect both wires to the back of the console. For those who's fans don't work, you may have plugged into the wrong connectors. I did this the first time and thought my fan was broken. Test everything before you attach the console. Save yourself time and aggrevation.
4. Like many, I used white grease where I thought it would help.
5. I didn't tighten bolts on movement parts all the way as this seems to eventually cause squeaks. I aimed for a quarter or have turn away from fully tightened....more info
Great Product - Questionable Quality Assurance We used to own a NordicTrak elliptical. This Schwinn 431 is much quieter and smoother. After 3 weeks of two people using it 3-4 times/week, we only have one little "creak" in one of the foot pedals. While putting the unit together, one of the foot pedals had two broken mounts where the screws go into the plastic studs on the pedal. Schwinn had new pedals to me within 10 days. Also, the fan did not work. Schwinn wanted to sent me a new fan to fix the problem. Before them sending me a fan, I ask for the working voltage of the fan so I could do some in house troubleshooting first. I found that the fan worked fine when supplied externally with the required 9volts. Checking further, I discovered a broken power wire on the circuit board which supplies the fan. After re-soldering the wire to the board, the fan worked fine. Word of caution: This required professional working knowledge of electroncs, and the disasemmbly of the console for this fix. (I was in electroncs for 26 years in the military.) Had Schwinn sent me a new fan, the problem would not have been fixed until they also sent out a new console, which would have been at least 3 weeks. The only way this wire could have been broken was during the final assembly process, which shows that the fan was never checked prior to shipment of the product.
But overall, the Schwinn 431 is very quiet, smooth, and stable. It is also much lighter than our old unit and easy to move using the lifting bar at the rear of the unit. The fan is a little disappointing in that it does not move as much air as I would like....more info
Nice machine for the price; good for the home UPDATE: 5/11/09 - My husband has become addicted to the elliptical and is now doing 1.5 - 2 hours on it twice a week, while I do 35-45 minutes 3-4 times a week. All would be well if it didn't start making that damn thunking noise again. He has taken off the sides and adjusted the screws a couple of times. Each time the thunking goes away for a while, then returns after a few weeks. I have encouraged him to call Schwinn - last time they suggested it was just an adjustment - but so far he's reluctant to do that. I will post another update if we find a permanent solution for this irritating issue. Other than that, we love the machine - smooth and stable and - usually - quiet.
UPDATE: 4/29/09 -
We've been using this machine almost daily now since purchase. After minor adjustments to get the 'clunking' noise to go away (thanks to all the reviewers who explained how to loosen the screws), it has been just great - quiet and smooth. My only complaint is that if you want to use the included heart rate monitor, you have to grip the handlebars really tightly - at least I do. I use a chest strap monitor most of the time, but sometimes just want to hop on the machine and go. I have compared the two and the machine monitor does work - eventually. It takes a while to get to an accurate reading, and if you move your hands or relax your grip a little, it gets off count pretty quickly. All in all, a minor complaint as I imagine most folks will have their hands on the moving bars, not the stationary hand grips anyway.
The day I was ready to purchase an elliptical for our home, I pretty much tortured my husband by dragging him back and forth between stores, test-riding various models. We came home and I began to research ellipticals online, then we went back. I was convinced I wanted to buy a ProForm, but didn't really like the way it felt at the store. Came home again and started reading more reviews. I went to the library and researched Consumer Reports. The Schwinn kept coming out on top for the price range we wanted, so we went back to the store and looked for the 430 - the model that was rated so highly. Sears had one - a floor model - for around $550, but when I got on it I found it wasn't comfortable at all. I gave up in frustration and left. We made one last stop at Joe's sporting goods - and they had a 431 floor model. I loved it. The sales woman offered $100 off, but my husband said he didn't want a floor model, so I came home and looked on Amazon.
Wow, by ordering on Amazon, and qualifying for free shipping, I saved $250 off the best price I could get on a floor model! I was thrilled, but really, really worried about how it would work based on all the comments about issues after putting it together.
Well, my husband put it together - said it took about 3 hours (he was very methodical about it.) It's quiet and smooth and I love it! Unfortunately, neither the fan nor the heart rate monitor work. He's going to try to and fix that. I'll update again to report on how that works, but neither of those things is a big issue for me as I wear my own heart rate monitor and we have a large fan in the room where the elliptical lives.
Frankly, it exceeds our expectations and we're both very, very pleased with the quiet performance of this machine.
My husband fiddled with the wires and the heart rate monitor and fan now work.
* heart rate monitor is accurate, but you have to grip very tightly and it takes almost a minute for the right heart rate to display (I wear a chest monitor and tested it against that for accuracy)
* the fan spontaneously started on its own. Perhaps wires had to settle? Who knows, but it's nice.
* I forgot to mention that ABF, the delivery company, was extremely nice. I tracked the package and when I realized it was due to be delivered on a day we wouldn't be home, I looked up their phone number and called. They were fine with delivering it the next day and it arrived in great shape.
* So far we both LOVE this machine and are using it daily - about an hour, hour and a half total. No noises, no wobbling etc. Couldn't be happier. I'll try to remember to update in a few months.
* Finally - space - I was concerned about the height of this machine, as it was destined for a small, upstairs room with angled ceilings. No problem - it fits nicely without overwhelming things. ...more info
Good Product This arrived in good condition. There was a little paint chipped off of the bottom after we put it together, but is barley noticeable. I have been using it for a month and I love it. It is very smooth and quiet. It is very sturdy and very good quality. I am very happy with it, I would recommend it....more info
Love this Machine! We did a whole lot of research and found the Schwinn to be rated highly by Consumer Reports as well as many online review sites. We went to a couple of local retailers because I wanted to try the machine out in person and see how it felt for both of us (me: 5'4", him: 6"0") and we found that it has a really comfortable stride for both of us. One of our concerns was that we had limited space to put the equipment but this model seems to have one of the smallest footprints around.
We tried a couple of macines including a ProForm that had a similar price/footprint, but the stride felt like it was too shortened and high, like the pedals went up and down too much and did not give a full range of motion back and forth. (Hope that makes sense to you.) Anyway, this machine's stride feels very natural to us and like it gives a better workout.
We absolutely love the personalized programs. I was thrilled to find out that once I set my personal program, for future workouts I can adjust the time of the workout and it goes through the same levels adjusted for the shorter or longer time.
One thing I want to say is that you should check out if there is a Play It Again Sports shop near you that carries this model. We went in with the intention of just trying the machine out there and then purchasing it on Amazon, but the store was selling it for $100 less, fully assembled. After hearing different reviews of how long it took to put it together, we decided to buy it from the store.
We have had the elliptical for about a month and (try) to use it 3-4 times/week each. I haven't heard any squeaking that other reviewers talked about. In fact it is so much quieter than the stationary bike we had that the first time I turned on the TV during a workout, I had to turn the volume WAY down. The only thing that doesn't seem perfect on ours is the pulse reader doesn't seems to give an accurate reading, but neither of us really uses this, so we haven't called customer service....more info
Great Quality For The Money After reading many reviews on this Elliptical and others, I decided this was the best deal for my money. Even with the Super Saver Shipping, it arrived in 4 business days after I ordered it, you can't beat that! I put it together in about 2 hours, and the instructions were very simple to follow. I am very impressed with the quality of this machine, and could not believe how quiet it was. I put it on a rubber gym mat to protect my hardwood floors, and you can't even tell it is in use from the room directly below it.
My only complaints are that the fan doesn't really do much, and as someone else mentioned, the calculations to get your heart rate are a little weird because it always goes through the same sequence of numbers: 72, 74, 76, 78, 80, 100, 102, 104, 106, 108, 128, 130, 132, 134, 136, 156 (assuming your heart rate is up to 156) so it takes about 45 seconds to get your correct heart rate. However, neither of these things really bother me because I haven't really seen an Elliptical with a good fan on it, and the heart rate thing isn't that annoying....more info
plenty of use, works very well I've had the 431 for about 7 weeks. I've used it daily about one hour/day.
It took about 3 hours to put together. the price and delivery were fine. I used white grease everywhere.
I had some slight squeaks, but the machine is generally quiet. It does make a little noise just from the moving parts. I do recommend tightening the bolts for the arm handles on both sides just to the point where they don't move, and just snugging the bolts on the foot pedals where they attach to the flywheel. you'll need to tweak and tighten occasionally-depending on how much you use it. also grease, grease, grease. lots of moving parts here.
I am hugely into fitness. this is better than running and far lower impact. it's nice working out in your own home too. my abds and obliques seem to be tightening, something I also wasn't getting running.
I'll use this machine for as long as it lasts. next time, I may get a more expensive one but this is fine for now....more info
Good Eliptical My wife greatly enjoys the 431 Schwinn Eliptical. Instructions were easy to follow for assembly. Took me approximately two hours. Whisper quiet in operation and a joy to use.
Only comment is that the operating manual is a little tough to follow regarding programming various workouts. That's the one area that has received a negative comment.
Amazon shipped this very quickly, approximately one week ahead of that originally indicated. Although no fault of their own, the local shipper charged with the final stage was a handful to work with. That will vary with each market and it's not fair to hold Amazon responsible for poor customer service with a local shipper....more info
If you're searching for a quality in-home elliptical, look no more! After much consideration, I decided to buy new instead of used. I am very happy and excited about my new purchase. It arrived a day early (free shipping!) and I was able to put it together in approx. 2 hours. Directions were easy to follow. It is extremely sturdy, love the computer programs and the stride length is perfect for me (5'4'). It also has a very strong resistance if that is something you are comparing. I also purchased the "Elliptical GymTough Flex Mat" for underneath it, it's a perfect fit to the machine. Great Quality, gets me out of bed in the morning!! I'm pumped!! A+++++ ...more info
Great elliptical....If you get one that works I am currently on my second Schwinn 431 elliptical trainer as the first one I received did not work properly. I had numerous problems with the first machine including the E-2 error message, a bad motor, little to no resistance and a bad console. Because of the good reviews this elliptical has received I decided this bad machine must be an isolated case. I went through the on-line return process at Amazon and had a new machine within a week. The delivery company took the old machine so it could be returned to Amazon (of course I had to disassemble the machine and put it back in it's original packaging).
Now that I have an elliptical that works I can say this is a very good product. There are lots of programs and the resistance levels are very challenging. The machine is sturdy and quiet. I am 6-0 and weigh 230 pounds. This machine seems to handle my larger size very well. FYI...I use this machine in a room that has a 7'8" ceiling. I probably have 7" of clearance at this ceiling height. Keep ceiling height in mind when ordering this machine.
Although I had problems with my first machine, I give Schwinn customer service lots of credit for trying to fix these problems. They were receptive to my concerns and did what they could to resolve the issues. I also give Amazon credit for processing my return request in a timely manner and getting me a new machine within a week. It's nice when companies stand behind the products they sell instead of giving you the runaround. ...more info
Damaged Shipment!! I can't speak for the "quality" of the machine at this point becuase it arrived with (2) large scratches on it, and I refused delivery. So I'll have to let you know. But so far, I'm disappointed with Amazon's freight carrier....more info
Great buy Wow, this is a great machine. FYI: Im a novice trying to stick to my new years resolution. My husband and I went to sears and dicks sporting goods looking at elliptical machines around $[...]-$[...]. We looked at the new nordic tracks that come with ifit for awhile however when we looked online for reviews, pretty much everyone said it was either broken we they received it or within months they had major problems. We went back to sears to look at them again to decide for ourselves and while on the machine (NordicTrack Elliptical, Audio Strider 800) a woman came up to me with her husband and warned me not to get it b/c 3 months after she got hers, it broke and they had so much trouble getting it fixed, not to mention the expense. So ultimately we found this machine at dicks and i really liked it. Not too many bells and whistles just a basic machine. Unfortunately dicks didnt have any in stock when i went to buy it, then shortly after, stop selling it entirely. I saw that Amazon was selling it for $[...] which was $[...] more than dicks. My husband was very reluctant to buy online, so it took some convencing but....he thought about it for a week and we went online to buy it and found it was on sale for $[...]. We ordered it on Feb.10th and received it Feb.13th. We went with the supersave shipping since it made shipping free (which was supposed to make shipping take even longer but hey im not complaining). I cant believe how fast it came!
Ive only had the machine now for 1 day and only used it twice but Im very satisfied. My husband said the set up was time consuming but not difficult, there was one little scratch on the front of the machine, its on the bottom hardly even noticable. This machine has a smooth glide, whisper quite and so far no problems. The fans a little cheap, doesnt put out to much but I like the cup and towel holder. Will write another reveiw in the following months....more info

Great workout for the price! So, my husband and I went looking for an elliptical and found this model at a local sporting goods store. I wanted to try it out for myself. It was quiet and steady and comfortable on my legs. I was pleasantly surprised. It was on sale. However, they were out of them since this is last years model. We searched the other stores. I would have purchased from Amazon but we read about the shipping problems with Amazon and this product. We found the last one at another local store.
My husband put it together in about 3 hours. It has a tiny clicking sound while pedaling but I think I know where to adjust to get rid of it. Other than that it is very quiet. Much more than a treadmill.
I had my regular 25-30 (with cool down) work out on it. Not bad at all for the price. We paid around $700 because of the sale. And I made sure we purchased the store's 3 year protection plan. You never know. I hope Schwinn continues to improve on this model but not too much. For example, the cup placement is a little off. Otherwise, the price will soar....more info
Schwinn 431 Elliptical Trainer We love this product. It is easy to use and very effective for cardio workout. It was easy to assemble. I read many people having problems with the machine squeaking. I really took my time assembling. I made sure everything was tightened evenly and that all moving parts were well lubricated. I used engine oil to lube the parts that contacted each other and have had no issues....more info
Pleased I figured that since these reviews helped me that I would add my two cents.
I ordered the Schwinn last week and it was delivered today. The ABF man was nice enough to bring it my house as I said that I lived alone. The box is big and heavy.
I was able to put the machine together in 3 hours and that's with me being a 5'2 inch female. The flywheel area is heavy, but I think it all went to together smoothly. No missing parts.
Since this was a workout I just tried out the machine for 5 minutes. It was super quiet and made no noises. The fan worked and so did the console.
I understand that with time problems can arise, so I will try to give an update in about a month or so. ...more info
It's smooth ! This machine's works are great. Good quality fitness equipment. Very smooth operation, good electronics, a great workout. Definitely would purchase again. Only fault I could find is all the "accessories" are cheapie-looking. The cup holder and tiny fan are very plastic-y and look like they were added so they could boast of them in the ad. But the fitness parts work great. It took about 3 hours to put together. There were a lot of bolts, but the pictures were good and there were the right number of parts and the holes matched up and were well drilled. A ratchet allen wrench would be helpful, but the small one they included did the trick. Thumbs UP....more info
well built, but several problems... Don't want to bore you with specs, so here is my 2 cents worth after using it a week or two.
Positives: good price, free shipping from Amazon, ABF called ahead and coordinated delivery with me, sturdy build, good assembly instructions, heavy flywheel provides smooth action, only had to get the Dremel out to increase diameter of one of the bolt holes that refused to line up by a mm or two. Me, I consider that a positive on a complex piece.
Not so positives: I thought I did my homework pretty well, but I must not have looked too hard for reviews concerning user height. I'm 5' 11'' or 6' and I find my shoes having up to an inch hanging off the back of the footrests. I have to hold the upright handles by the hard plastic knobby tops. Can't possibly hold the vertical foam part of the handles unless I was waaay shorter. I find myself wanting an extra 3 or 4 inches of foamy handlebar so I don't have to hold the hard plastic tops. Handlebars seem like they need to be a couple inches more away from me too. Makes for a not very good upper body workout. I find I would like the stride to be at least several inches longer as well. Clickity sounding fan is the size of a computer case fan and about as strong. First workout went very well until the 15 minute point then squeaks and grinds galore almost every time since. Most don't start until you are several minutes to 15 minutes into a 20 minute program. Sometimes they stop when you get off and don't start again for a few minutes making for a frustrating hunt. I got the expected handlebar squeak and stopped it by loosening the handlebar bolts several times to the point of feeling a little wobbly. Tightened and loosened others to experiment with a couple other squeaks. I discovered the grinding noise starting on the third or fourth workout came from the rubber wheel assembly being a little too tight. Get out the tools and clean the grit away and regrease...several hours invested in this type of activity after several hours of assembly.
Verdict is go for it if you are no more than 5' 8" or 9" and don't mind taking things partially apart and cleaning and regreasing to hunt down noises. I just had my second noise free workout so I'm keeping my fingers crossed....more info
FAN - TAST -IC! I am so pleased with this machine. I purchased it about 2 weeks ago and having been using it faithfully. First of all, I want to say that I have severe arthritis in both hips and this machine allows me to use it carefully without creating serious stress on my hips as such would a treadmill or a recumbent bike. I have used many ellipticals and it is very hard to beat the several thousand dollar club machines.
That said, I am amazed at how smooth this machine is. Usually it takes a few uses of any elliptical machine for your body to acclimate to its rotations. I was pleasantly surprised at how fast I moved right into the groove of this machine. Five minutes into my first use felt like I've been using it for months.
Today, I went to Sears and got on about 8 different elliptical machines ranging from $300 - $1200 "on sale." The only machine that came close in quality and yet did not beat it in smoothness and quality was the $1200 "on sale" Nordic Trac model. I felt the highest price Nordic Trac was a good machine, but I would honestly prefer the Schwinn 431. The other 7 machines felt very stiff and sterile and difficult in their stride. They just felt cheap!
The Schwinn 431 is so smooth and has many features that make it not only a great deal, but an almost must buy. If you are looking for a reasonably priced, great exercise machine that is gentle on your body but excellent for the cardio, then look no further. Even if I had 4 or 5K to spend on a machine, I do not think I would waste the money. This machine is giving me a great workout and it just FEELS GOOD! It is built solid, it rides smooth and I can just tell by its construction and feel that it will give me many years of great exercise. And let's face it, in the most important aspect of any exercise we must ask ourselves the question: Is it helping my cardiovascular system? This one does the job and it does it well.
I'VE BEEN USING THIS MACHINE 4-5 TIMES A WEEK NOW FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS. I AM EVEN MORE PLEASED NOW THEN I WAS THEN. THIS MACHINE IS WORTH AT LEAST DOUBLE OF WHAT IT IS SELLING FOR. I AM NOW UP TO 40 MINUTES AND I AM GETTING AN OUTSTANDING WORKOUT. NOT ONLY THAT, BUT UNLIKE OTHER WORKOUTS THAT A WHILE TO GET GOING BECAUSE OF THE LABORIOUS NATURE OF THEM, I JUMP ON THIS AND AM READY RIGHT AWAY. THERE IS SOMETHING WONDERFUL ABOUT THE ELIPTICAL MACHINES AND THIS ONE IS RIGHT UP THERE FOR QUALITY....more info
Fantastic product!!! What a great product this is! It was shipped within 1 day of my order. and arrived at the local shipper about 2 days later. The packaging was the best I have ever seen - every part wrapped in plastic and surrounded by foam - no possible way for damage to occur. It took about 1&1/2 hours to assemble. Excellent instructions - take note where lock washers are positioned (small diagrams). The quality of the parts exceeds anything I've seen in home equipment (I have 4 machines now) everything is larger and stronger than it probably needs to be. Club quality. I've used it for about one month. Excellent in every way - whisper quiet, sturdy, smooth, bright display. Only drawbacks - pulse sensors are on the fixed handles (not on the upright arms) and the fan is too weak to be useful. I use a big fan on the floor. I bought this model as it improves on some issues with the next model down which cost $200 less. Amazon had the best price on-line and had free shipping ($800). This product exceeded my expectations. Nothing in this price range comes close. Note the short footprint which saves space - unlike the Nordic Track. I also have the Scwinn recumbent bike model 230 which is also excellent....more info
Schwinn 431 We've had the 431 for about a month and are all enjoying the workout. The lower impact is a big benefit over the old treadmill. I can get the same distance in 10 minutes less time and and feel like I'm getting a better overall workout. Huge benefit is how quiet it is. For longer workouts, we sometimes hear a squeak. The fan also didn't work from the start. We didn't bother complaining as that feature is a waste anyhow. If you don't get to see it in person - like us - don't be taken in by the ipod holder line. It's a tray. But, overall, it's been great. The workout is great, but, of course, to lose weight, this alone won't do it....more info
Great machine--lots of squeaks This is a great exercise machine with lots of programming options. You can set this machine for a stroll in the park or really go for it with interval training. Each of the progams has varying levels so you can find just the right spot to start and build up your endurance and strength. This machine is a good fit for your average person wanting to get their 30 minute a day routine or the person who wants more serious training. It was not difficult to put together, although easier with two people because the main part with the fly wheel is very heavy. Once you get it together, it runs quietly for about a week, then it starts squeaking and squaking. You have to keep a can of WD-40 nearby at all times. Eventually, after about a month, you stop having so many noise issues and can just get on and workout. I had no problem with assembly and I am an over 50 female (although very mechanically inclined). The size is nice also. It is big enough to have the weight and strength necessary to feel comfortable, but the size fits in smaller rooms as well. I would not hesitate to recommend this machine. Others with similar features are much more expensive. Go for the Model 431, it is better than the 430 and gets much higher reviews than Schwinn's new model (2009). I love it a use it daily....more info
Schwinn Elliptical Trainer We (me and my wife) picked this model since its launched in 2008. It was easy to assemble and get it running. Its a good product if someone wants to do a light exercise at home; however, we do hear some creaking sound while operating it. ...more info
Squeaking Problem Fixed! I did quite a bit of research online (and a few store trials) before settling on this machine. The price was great (with the $100 Amazon gift card) and the free shipping was fast. We got it in January and assembly was a snap except that one of the pre-threaded holes stripped during assembly. I called Schwinn directly and had a replacement handlebar in 2 days.
** A few days after putting it together it started squeaking horribly in the middle of a workout (usually 5-10 minutes after beginning). I was able to isolate the noise and found that it came from the main axis that connects the lower handlebars to the unit. Although the instructions say to "thoroughly tighten these connections" I found that slightly loosening them (only a quarter turn if that) made the noise disappear completely and it hasn't come back. **
It's quiet and rides great. My wife uses it almost everyday and I should be using it much more! :-)...more info
good quality after much research I settled on the schwinn 431 elliptical trainer. I must admit up til now I really was not much of an exercise person. Since purchasing this trainer, I have used it every day but 2 and sometimes twice /day. The scale of the machine is suitable to fit into our bedroom. It is not too long. The computer programs are numerous and easy to figure out. My husband, who is an exercise junkie, and works out in a gym 4 days a week was even impressed by the quality of this trainer. It took approximately 2-3 hours to put together. The instructions were easy to follow. My only complaint at this time is that the right arm is squeaking rather loudly. I must write to the company for suggestions how to alleviate this problem. I like that your body is not taking a "pounding" as a treadmill does. I often get on in my PJ's and moccasin slippers. I feel my whole body is getting a better workout. I do feel that the pulse rate handles are inaccurate, and understate your actual pulse. I will continue to use this machine and hope to see some real toning results....more info
Quality, Quality, Quality This elliptical by far exceeds expectations!
We bought another brand, brought it home, put it together and after 5 minutes the belt fell off. Needless to say we took it back.
After much research I decided on the Schwinn 431 and we're definitely not disappointed. It was relatively easy to put together and quality is wonderful. It's sturdy, quiet, and easy to use.
If there is only one thing to complain about it would be the shipping. The tracking system was ineffective. The shipping company had the wrong contact information, their letterhead had outdated address information, and we ended up having to pick up the elliptical ourselves.
To end on a good note...I can't wait to exercise!...more info
Schwinn 431 - A good Value Product was shipped very quickly and arrived in perfect shape. I did go and pick it up from the transportation company, but then it was on the way home from work. I waited for the weekend and open and layed out everything carefully. It took me 4 hours to put together, but I'm slow and wanted to make sure everything was put together per instructions. As soon as the machine was put together, I had to try it out. There was some squeaking that developed where the handles are attached at the main center tube assembly. As soon as I loosed the bolts on both sides, the squeeking went away. This should be added to the instructions in that the bolts where the handles attach main tube area should not be overly tightened. In fact, none of the bolts should be overly tightened. Amazon provided a great bargain here, and I for one really appreciate it. I love this machine now, but I still don't work with it as much as I should. There's always tomorrow............Enjoy.............more info
Very accurate descriptions in these reviews. Well I also spent about two months researching ellipticals before I bought this. I previously owned a ProForm that lasted eight years of regular use before the frame broke. Since I use it regularly, I wanted a more expensive unit than the $399 ProForm that I had. I narrowed it down to the Schwinn 431 for 2 main reasons: Most comfortable for me and a good price in comparison to the others. I paid $699.
As far as the other reviews I read, they are accurate.
It took 2.5 hours to assemble, but was not difficult at all.
It squeaked like hell after about three days of use, so I followed the advice here and loosened up the screws in two key areas, and it stopped squeaking! It is very quiet now. Also very stable and not tippy at all. I am six feet tall and weigh 200 lbs, so test it yourself if you are larger than that.
There was damage in shipment, a piece of plastic was cracked off of the flywheel cover, but I just superglued it back in place.
The programs are good, the resistance is excellent. This is a MUCH harder machine to use than my old one. This elliptical does an amazing job of pushing me to my limits. I like the fan, and I like the iPod holder. The water bottle holder is too low, but not bad.
I like the 15 year frame warranty, especially considering my old one broke after 8 years.
Whatever you do, before you spend money, TRY THEM ALL OUT YOURSELF. Not just for 3 minutes in the store, but try it for AT LEAST twenty minutes. Otherwise, you may be making a big mistake....more info
A great buy I use a Precor elliptical at my work gym, but couldn't afford one for home. I did alot of research and testing of other elliptical brands in this price range and decided the Amazon community couldn't be too far off. I have been extremely pleased with the Schwinn 431. The set up only took my husband an hour or so. This machine is so quiet that my daughter watches TV right next to me. There is no sound and the movements are very smooth. I had to readjust my expectations on my fitness level, though. Without any resistance and on some of the lowest settings, this is an intense workout. But, it gets the job done and is a great workout. I highly recommend this elliptical to anyone wanting one for home use in this price range. It is well worth the price....more info
good after tweaking I have had my eliptical for two weeks and I like the workout I get, the one thing i don't is all the times you have to adjust the bolts to get rid of squeaks and knocks. After two weeks of tuning I still have one knocking sound I am not sure where it's coming from. But, I like the programs and it's a nice looking machine, just the knocking is a bit annoying! Assembling it was pretty easy too. Just follow the instructions. My eliptical was missing the wire harness in the console mast, but I contacted Schwinn and they mailed me one in a week. All in all, I like the machine despite the noises considering the low price!...more info
Love this machine! We purchased this machine in December 2007 and the two of us have been using it everyday since. It works very well and gives you a smooth, quiet workout. Overall a very good product for the price. Seems quite sturdy and holds up well to a couple of people who have some pounds to lose! The stride is comfortable for us, but please note we are 5' 5" and 5'6" so I'm not sure how it would do for a tall person.
Assembly took a little while, but my husband does this sort of thing for a living, so it wasn't very difficult. The thing really does come in MANY little pieces which made the assembly time consuming, but it was helpful in getting it into the house.
I have noticed a small squeak from time to time. We've tried to find it, but can't seem to find anything specific as the cause. The machine is on the basement floor and sometimes gets slid around. Seems like it squeaks more if it gets out of level. The computer console of the machine looked very scratched and worn when we got the it, but so far it has been working OK. ...more info
Great product, great price I did a ton of research before this purchase, and I've used the model one step down from this one (the Schwinn 430), which is also a great elliptical -- but for the price, I'm very happy I chose the 431.
I've had this elliptical for over a month now, and I couldn't be happier. My husband and I put it together in less than two hours, and we've had only one very minor issue since. It's so easy to use, and it's even much quieter than I expected it to be -- I usually can't hear the machine at all, except for the fan. The only issue I have is that the fan doesn't power off when the rest of the machine does, even though it should -- but I haven't bothered to contact Schwinn for a replacement, since it's a very minor inconvenience and doesn't affect how much I love this machine!
Schwinn 431 Elliptical Ordered Schwinn 431 based on previous highly regarded reviews. Amazon delivered on service and after 3 hours we were ready for a test run. This is a very easy to operate elliptical and quite smooth. I have been able to increase my workout with ease. The heart monitoring and easy programming are smart features. This is truly a bargain for those looking for a smooth, efficient elliptical that doesn't cost a fortune. Would highly recommend this to those looking for a value elliptical to tip them over the top to get on with preserving there health and fitness....more info
Worst fear realized... I bought this... now it is certainly a cheaper price than a gym-quality eliptical machine, but it also cost a pretty penny as well. First off, Amazon's carrier is terrible, and I had to take off a day from work to accept the package as the carrier does not deliver on the weekends, and they do not actually deliver it in for you. So if you live in an apartment building, they leave it outside the building and it's up to you on how you get all 180lbs of it in.
So I assembled it and everything, and when I went to try it -- I was on it for no longer than 3 minutes when immediately the left leg pops out of the track. There is one part, or a couple of parts on the left track that is certainly defective. The left track also squeeks badly. Then, on the right side, possibly coming from the flywheel unit, is an ear-piercing squeek that words cannot describe (some others, I believe, have reported this as well). So as of right now, it is obviouslly unusable, and I deeply regret this purchase... with the money you pay, it's not worth the hassle. So tomorrow I will contact the customer service, and update on how that will go. But I want a new machine, and them to provide a serviceman to put it together---I'm not going through all that trouble again....more info
Schwinn 431 Elliptical Trainer We are really impressed with the quality, operation and so far the durability of the Schwinn 431 Elliptical Trainer which we purchased from Amazon. It has been used by my wife and I for approximately 1.5 hours per day for the past two month with no problems. This is our first elliptical trainer and the experience so far has been good.
It came with no parts missing, simple to follow assembly instructions and we found the fit of components on assembly was excellent. All previous reviews which we read that reported of problems with noise etc. all seemed to stem from over torque of the fasteners. We were careful of this on assembly and the unit has worked smoothly and silently from the beginning.
We can't really compare to other elliptical trainers but would definitely recommend this one if the features meet you requirements.
IT STARTS TO FALL APART RIGHT AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES After approximately 5 months of irregular use by only one person, the Schwinn 431 ellipical has developed a terrible squeak in the flywheel, and the brake system is failing to increase the resistant levels properly. Periodically, the computer console, for no apparent reason, will display an error during a workout, at which time, you have to push the resume button on the console to finish your workout.
The workout programs on this machine are nice, but the elliptical itself is not worth the cheap workmanship. Do yourself a favor, save some money, and purchase a different machine. I certainly wouldn't purchase this machine again....more info
What I expected. After looking hard at the Schwinn and Fuel models, I decided on the Schwinn 431 mainly because it had more programs, cost less with the $100 amazon credit and had free shipping. The order and delivery went through like clockwork. The delivery company called and set up a time to drop it off. I'm mechanically inclined and the unit does take some time to remove from the box and assemble. A cordless drill speeds this process up, and it still took about 2 1/2 hours. I greased all the moving parts after reading about the squeaking problems. I'm stand at 6'1" tall and a user can operate the elliptical with plenty of headroom in a room with 8' ceilings.
At first, the elliptical was very quiet. It didn't take long for the squeaks to start. I've retightened all the bolts that I thought would stop the noise, but the elliptical still squeaks. The elliptical does have some 'flex' to the frame, but this could be attributed to my placing the machine on carpet. Aside from the noise, the elliptical and programs work as described in the manual and the motion is smooth. It would be nice if the custom programs remained stored after the elliptical was unplugged and the heel pad raised while the machine was in use. Overall, this elliptical machine seems to be a good investment and I don't foresee any problems in the future. ...more info
Schwin 431 Elliptical Trainer I have had my Schwinn Elliptical Trainer for almost 3 months and have been quite satisfied with the machine, especially considering its reasonable price. It is stable and offers a variety of programs to keep a moderate exerciser challenged. I frequently walk 3 miles on hilly terrain for exercise and find this a good alternative for the days I can't get outside. My only complaint is that the frame squeaks while I am using it (I weigh 150 lbs. so I don't think the squeaking is from excessive stress). I tried repositioning it and oiling various parts, but it is the frame itself and I can't figure out how to correct it. In any case, I consider this a minor flaw. ...more info
Fantastic Machine I have done a lot of research on elliptical trainers over the last few months, and the Schwinn 431 has proven to be the best machine out there. It took about 3 hours to assemble, but once assembled, it has worked like a charm. There have been no squeaks or other noises that other brand machines have made. I've had this machine for approximately 3 weeks now and I am very happy with it. I have been using the "ride in the park" mode, and I can honestly say that I do feel better and am starting to notice a difference in the way I look. If you are going to purchase an elliptical, get this one. I was able to get it for $100 less due to a promotion Amazon was having....more info
Nice Machine Fretted over machines for about two weeks but after reviewing this site and trying out a few different machines at the big boxes I decided to go with the Schwinn 431. Some of the machines at the stores claimed to have an 18 inch stride but they were very restrictive. The Schwinn is very comfortable, has good resistance and it's small footprint fits exactly where I want it. I'm 5'10" and it fits me great.
Except for one bolt that was a pain in the butt the machine went together very nicely. I'm not very mechanically inclined but I followed the directions and took my time and in about two hours I was moving.
As far as the Heart rate monitor goes. Anytime you check someone's heart rate you count for at least thirty seconds and then multiply by two. This machine is no different. It is simply scrolling through numbers while it is counting. I notice that the average heart rate at the end of the workout is fairly accurate while during the workout it's all over the place. Do not rely on this feature. Learn to take your own pulse and consult with your Doctor as to what your target heart rate should be. That would be the only true measure of your actual rate.
Other than that the machine is great. I greased all the right moving parts with some spray white lithium grease. Even the ones that were already lubed up. There is still some noise but when you stop and think about it, it is a machine with moving parts there is bound to be some noise.
I am a true nobody who is just trying to lose some weight and have fun doing it and the Schwinn so far has been exactly what I needed. I just thought I'd put in my two cents and let people know that I'm happy with my machine and I hope those of you who buy this have the same luck and good fortune as I have had.
Thank's for reading I hope I didn't bore you. P.S. ABF freight A+++++++++ Great Driver!...more info
So far so good Well, I received the shipment today, it took about 3 hours to assemble, wasn't too hard at all. After I got it all done and pulled the AC adapter out of the box I saw that it was an AC - DC adapter and did not fit a standard outlet. I called the technical support and sent in pictures of the AC - DC adapter I got and they are "looking into it" because all their AC adapters fit standard outlets. In the mean time I'm using an extra AC adapter I had laying around the house. I did notice the squeaking about 20 mins into a workout...I saw that someone said loosening the screws will help with that. I'll have to try it in the morning. All in all I'm fairly happy with my purchase. I like that it's smaller then most and fits well into my small apartment. I'll update and let you all know how the technical support deals with my AC issue....more info
Great elliptical! Definitely recommend this elliptical! Assembly was a breeze, and the thing performs great, no squeaks or rattles, smooth operation, nice screen, lots of features....more info
Sturdy machine, smooth, and survived shipping My Schwinn 431 Elliptical was delivered and the box was beat up pretty badly. It looked like ABS Freight had a fork lift battle with it but it is packaged really well. The driver let me inspect it and it was in good shape with minor scratches. I advise downloading the assembly manual from the Schwinn website prior to machine arriving becuase it helped me in the assembly process to be familiar with the product. It took around 2 hours to assemble including cleaning up the shredded box and shipping materials.
I have used it several times and it is a solid machine that works almost as well as my gym's Procor ellipticals. I am 6'1" 260 lbs. and the machine is solid, smooth, has great tension when wanted, does not rock, and is fun to use. The stride is nice for my height and fits great in my small office at my house. I like to use it when I don't have time to go to the gym, or as a supplement to the gym. It works great and I would recommend this elliptical. Thanks for all the Amazon reviewers and for the Treadmill Sensei for recommending this machine.
I use this elliptical at least 5x a week and it works great. The fan had a short and they sent me a new console/ fan and I recieve it in 2 days.
I decided to leave the fan off and put a little bigger clip on fan where the original one was and it works much better. I think I had a defective right foot plate because when I first assembled it would almost touch the wheels underneath and my heal would hit the floor every once in a great while. Well, The weld cracked and I recieved a new one in 2 days and it fits properly and works great. I think the product is good but some parts can be defective.
I still stand by my rating because I recieved the new working parts in 2 days and customer service has been great in my experience....more info
Quality item I did a lot of research to find the best quality elliptical for the smallest price. The 431 fit the bill perfect. I ordered it on Wed and it arrived on the next Tues. Total time to put together was approx 2 hrs (probably wouldn't of taken but 1 hr, but I had a 5 yr old helping). Final price after delivery was $699 total. Quality machine, but has developed the annoying squeak everyone talks about. I am in the process of "fine tuning" the bolts to get rid of it. Overall the experience and quality of the product was satisfying. I would definately reccommend the 431....more info
Ok But oh boy So I like the machine, but the problem I have is that the fly wheel belt came off after about a week of use. Unfortunately I am out of the warranty so Schwinn sent me the new part but no instructions how to fit it. I can't find out how to do it and can't get anyone to do it from Schwinn, so I have something nice and expensive to hang cloths on....more info
