I tried using this for my home business, but my business is too small for it to be effective. This product is definitely meant for something with a few employees and more input and output flow than what I do. I did notice that it took up a lot of the memory and slowed down my boot up considerable, though.

So I would recommend this product to someone who has a medium size business from home with an up-to-date computer system that can afford monthly fees to additional services like Paypal.

  • Slow yet highly functional
This is a highly functional accounting software designed to do both cash based and accrual accounting. It is more than sufficient for small businesses and probably ideal for businesses with less than 100 employees. But please note, this particular version is only for a single computer (non Client-Server). If you want a scalable solution that can handle multiple connections in a client-server environement, this product is not the answer.

Its main drawback is its speed. I installed it on my laptop (Intel Dual core 2.0Ghz, 2GB of memory, and 7200 rpm hard drive), and the speed of transactions are noticeably lagging. It is, however, still very much usable.

Its best feature is its intuitive GUI. Clearly, the GUI was designed to meet the needs of accountants and non-accountants alike. If you are an accountant who likes to use journal entries to balance debits and credits, you can do so. If you don't know the difference between debit and credit, then you will still be able to do basic accounting with this software.

  • I really tried to give this a chance. I really did.
After 6 months of wrestling with this product, I'm calling it quits. This is among the most unintuitive, unfriendly, and downright buggy piece of software I've used.

I went with this software over Quickbooks since my experience with Microsoft software has always been good, especially compared to other vendors. Additionally, I am a Windows programmer, and this program provides an API I can use for automation.

However, it is a royal pain to deal with. Where do I begin? Entering items for sale is a huge drag on my time. It doesn't kit things properly. There's no support for items that are manufactured in house. Cost of goods sold is buggy - my P&L report at tax time showed figures that were millions of dollars off (yes, that's MILLIONs. I run a small business with less than 10k sales/year). Almost every transaction I put in had to be re-entered because the date was wrong - the software makes it hard to remember to put in the right date. And the item numbering is ridiculous.

In addition, this thing is slow for no good reason. How could it take so long to run a report for 30 customers? How could it take almost a full minute to launch? And don't get me started on installation. This thing requires an install of Sql Server on your PC. Sharing the data between different computers is near impossible. It nags you to backup your data before your session starts - how dumb is that? Who's going to begin a 5-minute time-waster on backing up when you are about to make changes that will require another backup (which it will not remind you to do after youre done).

In summary, save yourself a lot of stress and stay away from this pimply teenager who will only get on your nerves and will barely provide any benefit at all. I'll never see those hours I sunk into this again. Don't be the next victim....more info
  • Move Over Peachtree - There is a New Boss in Town
As someone who has used Peachtree for my small business accounting needs for years I always felt that while Peachtree was a good program, it was far too comlicated and bloated for the average small business user. I wanted something that, quite frankly, made doing my books a snap -- as easy as writing a letter -- and I found it with Microsoft Accounting Professional 2008.

First off, let me state this -- if you are an average user of the Microsoft Office suite of products then Accounting 2008 is going to be a snap for you to use. They have went to great lengths to make sure you don't need an Accounting degree to understand it. A lot of the features not only integrate extremely well with Office 2007, but will remind you a lot of using Office (minus the ribbon interface).

One of the really nice features of Accounting is the ability to add third-party add-ins. Out of the box you get an integration module for Paypal, so your invoices can automatically generate Paypal requests and Accounting can automatically classify and deduct the fees for it from the appropriate accounts. As your business grows, and you decide that you need to do direct credit card processing, Accounting 2008 lets you integrate with CC processors directly -- again, handling managing the costs and fees for you.

Dashboards are another strong feature of this product. How is my business doing? What is my accounts payable looking like? How much cash do I have on hand? All that information and more is available through quick, convenient dashboards. You can drill down into the dashboards to pull up reports to see more detailed data.

If you use Business Contact Manager for Outlook then you are in for a treat -- it integrates directly with Accounting to help you track not only customer information, but also communications and marketing camapaigns! No more having to hunt and search for emails sent months ago or wondering if your marketing campaigns via e-mail are working.

All in all, I couldn't be happier with the product. I think it has been a welcome upgrade from Peachtree and thanks to its integration with other products really brings my business into a 360-view. I know immediately how well things are doing, what my customers are up to, and what needs my attention.

If you own a small business then do yourself a favor and give this a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised....more info
  • NOT READY...!
My brother bought this for his business because he liked the Office suite integration. I started using it to keep his books and there are many problems with it. First it's SLOW. Second, once figuring out how to get it to open an existing company file, it kept crashing, losing all recent entries. Thirdly, and the worst part, Microsoft's support for this product is horrible. A technical support rep will call you back within 24 hours, AND THEY NEVER DO!

My recommendation: Stick with Intuit's QuickBooks. They've been doing this a long time and they know how to do it. Microsoft Office Accounting is a buggy clone of QuickBooks anyway. I returned it for a refund and I'm now starting from scratch with QuickBooks Pro2008. Microsoft DOES NOT do accounting software well yet....more info
  • Office integration makes for easy business management!
In a nutshell, I've used QuickBooks, Money, and Peachtree Accounting off and on for the last twelve years to manage our business. In the end, I sometimes find these programs to cumbersome to outweigh the advantages of a simple file system and hand kept books. However, with the surge in technology and where it can take your business, I find that Microsoft has gone above and beyond in the development of this software. Here is what I really like about this software:

    1. It integrates with Paypal and EBay for an additional $10 per month. You can list items for sale on eBay right from this program, and when the item sells, in real time it will update payment status, account for fees, and provides a very easy to use simple accounting system to keep track of everything without spending several hours per week doing this yourself. If you sell on eBay, simply put, YOU NEED THIS!

    2. It's integrated with Paypal. When you need to send an invoice, you can include a link to be paid by credit card through Paypal. It keeps things professional and easy. If you don't have a credit card merchant account this is a very good solution, especially for very small businesses that would like to start accepting credit cards.

    3. Your accountant can remotely access (with your permission) your books and update them, then synchronize the information back to you to keep your books up to date without in person visits.

    4. You can manage your payroll through this system for only $14 per month. They automatically calculate your employment taxes and you can print checks right from this software. This is the cheapest payroll solution I've ever seen. Plus, since it's built in all your business financial information is in one spot and you will get a true picture of your business without cumbersome integration of data from other sources.

    5. The templates are amazing. Whether you need to create an invoice or a packing slip, it's there and ready to use. This will save you time and money over hiring a print shop or using another application.

Since this integrates with other Microsoft products such as Outlook, email, and more, you will seamlessly be able to use information across these applications. I really love this product. It did take a few tries to install correctly. Once it was installed I began using it right away. The user interface is familiar so the learning curve is much smaller than if you were to embark on learning another accounting program.

The Microsoft web site has a free trial download of this program, and also has an express version with less features that they offer for free....more info
  • Powerful package that does basic accounting, template creation, customer management and online banking and eBay accounts
As a small business owner, I have created and processed my data in Excel for nearly a decade. It has proven to be adequate, although there were times when I have had to do crude copy-and-paste imports. While this product takes some time to load in general it is worth the wait. The quick start screen allows you to import data directly from Excel, create an Excel spreadsheet that is the target of the import of data and manually input information. Although the precise sequence of operations takes some time to get used to it, there is no real difficulty.
Other tasks, such as creating and customizing invoices, e-mail letters and other templates are available and the package is linked to Microsoft Word. Accounting Professional can be used to set up and manage an eBay account, set up and manage bank accounts online, manage customer orders and contacts, manage vendor orders and contacts, manage payroll and handle sales tax issues.
Quite frankly, this package offers much more than I need at this time. However, if I were to expand my business to regularly selling on eBay, then the power of this package would be needed. At that time, I would be grateful for the seamless manner in which it handles all of the accounting chores of running a business. There is also an online community built into the package where you can ask questions of other users. There is no question regarding the value of this, as all power users of Microsoft products know, the users generally know more about their products than the people at Microsoft. There are also links to webcasts, live events and other learning resources.

  • Good Value for the Small Business
Microsoft Office Accounting Professional 2008 is easy to install and simple to run for small business. It interfaces fairly well with other Microsoft Office applications and allows for easy transfer of data and information from other programs.

Movement within the program is relatively easy and it allows you to automate repetitive tasks. Invoices, forms and reports can be customized without a great deal of effort. The software can be accessed with different levels of security depending upon sensitivity of data and the needs of individual employees.

The price is reasonable and, while it is not designed for complex businesses, provides good value for the standard small business or professional office....more info
  • Very bulky software and not as intuitive as I wanted.
This software is very large in size and takes up too much space on my already crowded system. I had used QuickBooks earlier and found the Office Accounting Professional to have some good features but overall it is cumbersome, slow and not very intuitive in some aspects.

I think it is a good solution for a home office but is not robust enough for small business use. However, the integration with MS Office is good and helps transport some of the data more easily. However on the negative side most financial institutions offer better integration and data-porting with Quickbooks so dumping data into MS Accounting Professional becomes that much more difficult. ...more info
  • I liked it
I'm not a numbers person. However, everybody has to keep track of bills and such, and with being a small business owner, I had extra challenges to work with. So I jumped at a chance to give this program a shot. I'm glad I did.

I think the thing I like about it most is the layout. I know some people are not so impressed, but being someone who took to Office 2007 like a duck to water, I'm two for two on MS's newer programs. I found it easy to navigate, and had little trouble figuring out where everything's supposed to be. And, as with Office, I like the bells and whistles--they make things easier, at least for me.

I didn't notice much of a problem with things loading, though that may be because I have a newer computer. There are still some features I haven't used yet (including ones that cost extra) but so far, so good!...more info
  • I'm not an accountant
I'm not an accountant. So I feel I am not able to really evaluate this program fully.

I did find I could use the expense tracking part well (and this was helpful as my previous way to track out of pocket business expenses was discontinued.) And this works well with Outlook (you can export information about contacts to the accounting module here) so if I had billing on my own to do, I could possibly send out invoices based on client or customer information in Outlook. For that reason, I really like this software because that saves a lot of time. But as a non-professional in the field of accounting, I don't think I can give a more in-depth analysis of whether this is superior to other accounting packages ( Quickbooks Pro for an example. )

And personally, I prefer to use a professional accountant for these tasks. But if you are setting up your own business and intend to keep your own books, or if you have a lot of business expenses and want to have something to send to your accountant, this is very helpful software....more info
  • As close to turnkey accounting as you're going to get.
Personally, I am in awe of anyone who successfully ran a Home Based or Small business before the advent of computer-based software applications, and the best recommendation I can offer for Microsoft Office Professional Accounting 2008 is I completed the installation, transferred essential information from other applications and was able to generate basic business flow documents in less time than it took to write this review.

As advertised, with only rudimentary accounting acumen it is quite likely most users will be positioned to generate quotes, invoices and billings within minutes after installation. The quick start menu, which looks a lot like the XP/Vista control Panel, is conveniently organized and is easy to follow. Pertinent business information such as customer and vendor lists, employee records, financial accounts, product information and the like can be transferred from existing spreadsheets, other accounting packages, or entered manually. If you need to build from the ground up, the application also includes templates for each of the aforementioned information segments that do not require much more familiarity with the underlying applications than the ability to follow precisely laid out screen generated instructions.

The screen display is very comfortable for Office Suite product users with Top menu bar (no ribbons!) as well as a left side navigation bar where individual business segments like vendors, customers, employees, reports and banking information are accessible. Tasks for each component are displayed in flow chart form and essentially guide you through the necessary steps to complete any required function. This application is an asset for the small business as it includes a complement of tools beyond requisite accounting and expense tracking. As soon as the company screen is opened, the user is offered an up-to-date snapshot of business status that is customizable to your individual needs or interests. It has built-in email integration for completion of cover letters for electronic mailings, facilitates online selling via ebay and credit card management with PayPal. For those who employ outside accountants or bookkeepers, remote access can be enabled. One feature I already find indispensable is one time entry (well, nearly one time entry) of client information. From prospect letter to 3rd collection notice, client information can be transferred to the appropriate document in the space of a few keystrokes. The program also features a tickler file for nearly every piece of communication I need to send out or business area that requires immediate attention.

I do not wish to imply the learning curve is shallow because I have encountered a number of features that will take some time to fully exploit and some screens have fields that will require further investigation via online tutorials or search at Office live website. As is common practice in today's environment a physical manual is amongst the missing. However, whether one is transitioning from another financial management package, transferring data from Excel or building from scratch, this application is extremely user friendly and should not result in loss or downtime during the transition process. I find it much more intuitive than QuickBooks Pro, and as I descend deeper into the vortex that is Microsoft, I can't help but to appreciate the convenience of seamless integration with other Office Suite products.

My most significant complaint with the software would be lack of connectivity with Microsoft Office Live Small Business. Although I could build a bypass via Business Contact Manager and Excel, for the time being I do have to duplicate some fields of client information at the Web hosting site and locally. So, cut and paste will not go the way of user manual for a while yet. I also haven't figured out if I can replace the generic quote and invoice forms within the application with the forms created in Word with the customizable templates. It's only a few additional keystrokes to use the ones I built but it is an additional step that may be avoidable.

This is one package that is well worth the money.

  • Nice small business accounting software
This is typical Microsoft software. It is easy to install and as most operating systems are Microsoft it integrates very well with other programs like Excel, Powerpoint, Word as well as other Microsoft programs. On install the program allows for quick first time Company setup or importing data from existing business files. The program loads SQL server 2005 as well as SQL Native client to assist in the database management. Some understanding of SQL would be helpful but you don't need to be a SQL DBA to operate this program. All said this is a nice packaged Office Accounting program. There are a few things to keep in mind. The program integrates connections to online service providers, like EBay, Credit services, PayPal, Check and Payroll services that require monthly enrollment fees. The nice thing is that you can tailor subscriptions to fit the business' needs. A nice complete small business solution....more info
  • Solid, not spectacular
Microsoft has been trying to become a serious player in accounting software for quite some time. Office Accounting Professional is an obvious attempt to make a dent in the low end of the market and chip away at the lock QuickBooks Pro 2008 has on that segment. The basic look and function of the program is so similar to Quickbooks, in fact, that one could easily mistake it for the current king of the hill.

To test this product, I set up books for a small business that I recently started and entered a number of basic transactions. While some processes weren't as intuitive as I might have liked, it's relatively user friendly and it doesn't take long to get things done. Like Quickbooks, the internal controls are awful and you can freely edit past transactions with no real audit trail. This is convenient if you make a mistake, but a major no-no for those trying to run a genuine accounting department.

Office Accounting Professional is a competent program for those running a mom and pop business, but would not be sufficient for any more than that. Unfortunately, I didn't see anything here that is a real improvement over Quickbooks and because of that, I don't recommend the product. Because Quickbooks enjoys a near-monopoly in this market, there are several advantages to buying it. Many bookkeepers and tax preparers will be able to take a copy of your data file and do their work, but none of them are likely to have this product. The same is true of pre-formatted check stock and many other things. This is not bad software, it's just not compelling enough to give up the advantages of owning the dominant package. ...more info
  • I now have a paperweight.....
As of this writing, I have entered the same company data 4 times. Yes, I made back-ups. Yes, I tried to restore them. Yes, all of my data was gone. Went through the knowledge base and it seems quite a few folks are having the same problems. As mentioned in an earlier review, customer service consists of a "call-back". Just got one, and his software had crashed so he couldn't help me at the moment...will call back later. I'll hold my breath for that one!

The software offers very interesting features (EBay / PayPal integration) and includes everything (plus a great deal more) needed to run a small business. Personally, I just can't get it to work properly. Am glad I am just starting up - the switch will be quite simple and I'm only out about $140.00 - - - OUCH!...more info
  • Nice upgrade.
If you've used the previous versions, this one is no different. A couple extra features but nothing big. I think most people like myself become spoiled over time from how easy this program really is to use and find ourselves frustrated when it doesn't do everything just perfect.

This program is incredibly simple, offers just about everything you could ask for in reporting, 3rd party integration, emailing, creating sales and purchase transactions, taking care of your taxes, automatically sending your file to your accountant, I could go on for a while. Get it, it's the only accounting software I would recommend to anyone.

  • Lots of features, but definitely has some shortcomings
I haven't used all the features on Office Accounting Pro 2008, but it probably has too many shortcomings for us to integrate it into our office.

I'll start with what I believe to be among the strongest assets of this program, which nobody else has mentioned. First, for eBay sellers, it offers an upgrade service ($10 per month) which has amazing auction listing management features. Be aware that this is cheaper than almost all the other subscription-based auction management services, and is just as good - possibly better. Even if you don't use anything else in this suite, this feature alone may make it worthwhile for some users.

Also, payroll feature (also an upgrade, $14 per month) is pretty decent. There are some out-of-the-box software programs (no subscription required) which also do this, but the MS system seems very streamlined, and definately cheaper than PayChex. As an HR time-saver for small companies, this is probably a pretty good option.

Finally, it has an easy integration for customer/vendor lists, employee records, financial records/accounts, inventory/products, etc.

All of that being said, I give a reluctant recommendation for this product. Except for the features listed above, everything else can be found on inexpensive or free open source software. And, typical of most MS softwares, this is bloated and a bit clunky. Admittedly, there are a LOT of features on this that I haven't yet explored. If you're going to use it, I would definitely recommend doing the tutorial, finding a class on how to use it, or taking the time to read a dummies guide on how to use it....more info

  • Lots of Features Flawed by Slow and Bloated Interface
The Microsoft approach to business software continues to offer a vast array of options, of which the average user will only use 20%. Office accounting Professional is no exception. There are a lot of great features here, and they are included in the price even if you never plan to use them.

The latest Accounting offering from Microsoft almost anything you'd expect from Peachtree or a similar competitor. Microsoft was late to this game, but they definitely did their homework. All of your favorite functions and then some are there.

Some of the better functions also require monthly fees. The integrated eBay and Paypal functions are excellent if you take your selling on eBay seriously. They also cost pay ten dollars a month to take advantage of, which will take a chunk out of your sales.

The main problem with the software, however, is that all those features you aren't going to use are still slowing down the user experience. The program is big, bloated and slow, like anything from Microsoft. While competitor programs aren't exactly lightweights either, Accounting Professional just feels too slow for comfort, even on a fast computer.

The features, integration with the rest of Office and Windows, and the price may be attractive to many users. The monthly fees, bloat, and a desire for a more mature product will turn others off. As with any software, try the demo and competitors' demos first....more info

  • Not quite there yet...
Microsoft Office Accounting Professional 2008 is Microsoft's answer to Quickbooks and Peachtree, two companies that have led in the accounting software sector for a number of years. Having used Quickbooks in the past (and still do), I looked forward to the opportunity to test Microsoft's software.

As my intent was to only test this software, I installed the software onto a spare computer so that I did not have to worry that this software would somehow screw up my Quickbooks files. As this software was able to import my data from Quickbooks, I copied it over and imported it into OAP08 -- relatively painless. For the next couple weeks, I entered data into both Quickbooks and OAP08 (tedious, but had to be done!)

If you've familiar with MS Outlook, and other Office applications, the interface will seem familiar, which I'd consider a plus. Integration with other Office applications is also a nice feature. OAP08 seems geared towards the avid eBay seller with its convenient Paypal integration (costs $$ for monthly subscription -- figures!). However, these nifty features does not make up for the fact that OAP08 is SLOW. Admittedly, this spare computer is a bit older...

While MOAP08 does the basics well, like many of Microsoft's other products, its not quite there yet. It may need a few service packs and updates before it performs as well as it should. That said, Microsoft has a solid performer that I may very well look into again when my Quickbook updates expire. ...more info
  • Solid but not spectacular
This is Microsoft's attempt to take on QuickBooks. Along those lines, it is relatively easy to begin using and will take care of the needs of most small businesses. Because it is from Microsoft, you also know that it will always integrate with the features of other Office products, including backwards compatability with whatever Microsoft comes up with next. This is not a reason to switch from your current accounting software, but may be something to think about if you are purchasing accounting software for the first time (trying to switch programs after being on a different one for years can be difficult).

Overall, a solid piece of software that does what it advertises....more info
  • A nice piece of software

If you don't know the difference between debit and credit, then you will still be able to do basic accounting with this software....more info

  • Many features, but also very slow and bloated
I'm comfortable with software and usually figure them out quickly. Not so with accounting software. It took time and patience before I finally got the hang of QuickBooks. I thought I'd try Microsoft's accounting software since I'm comfortable with most of the company's software. QuickBooks has some clunky issues with its interface -- an area where Microsoft excels.

I've also used Microsoft Money, but its purposes differ from QuickBooks. Microsoft Money works more for balancing checkbooks and credit cards while QuickBooks and Microsoft Accounting have more features that businesses need.

But after trying Microsoft Accounting for a couple of days, I'm going to uninstall it. First, it's very slow. I thought QuickBooks was slow... until I tried Microsoft Accounting. I think it took too much time and effort to convert a QuickBooks file. It worked, but not all the invoices transferred. I had some invoices in progress and can't find them.

I just don't have the time or patience to learn its multitude of features -- maybe too many especially for small businesses, which adds to the bloat. In playing with the application, it doesn't take as much time to figure out where to go for invoicing, customers, lists, and such. But the functionality behind the interface is too problematic (slow and incomplete).

One of the popular features is the integration with PayPal and eBay for a monthly fee. I occasionally sell on eBay, but it's not enough to justify the cost. While Microsoft Accounting can include a link to PayPal for invoices, I don't think it works with the basic accounts (that accept direct deposits only and no credit cards -- because PayPal eats up too much money.)

It also has a built-in payroll feature that can manage payroll including printing checks for a small monthly fee. Businesses with at least two employees will probably appreciate this while individual businesses don't need it.

Microsoft's templates work better than QuickBook's (one of its weaker areas). QuickBooks templates don't improve much with each version, but I've managed to personalize one for my business and rather use a faster than prettier applications.

What if you've never used an accounting application before, but you've used Microsoft Office products? I don't think it makes a difference in terms of learning the application. Accounting is different from most business applications.

Overall, QuickBooks is faster than Microsoft Accounting, but not as pretty in terms of the interface. If you've never used either application, try Microsoft's 60-day trial version. Or if you don't need a souped up version of Microsoft Accounting, you might find Office Accounting Express 2008 meets your needs and you don't pay a dime.

Unfortunately, from what I can tell -- Intuit does not have a trial version of QuickBooks. If you already use QuickBooks -- you don't need to change unless the cost savings of using the payroll and eBay features make the difference....more info
  • Slow and difficult software
I purchased this product to be mainly used for my father's small business. I used Microsoft money and Quickbook and I wanted to try the new Microsoft accoutning software.

    The Pros:
    1) Paypal integration
    2) Can convert Quickbook documents

    The Cons:
    1) Too slow (in terms of conversion) and often there are missing data
    2) Too many features (overwhelming)

I felt that the bad cons outweighed the good and in this case, I'd give it a 3 star. ...more info
  • Not for everyone, but just right for me
I've read the other reviews of this product here, and there are clearly a lot of negatives. Some people find this program too big, some find it too small.
    I found it just right.
When I contemplated self-employment, I had several concerns, including whether or not I could actually keep the wolf from the door that way, but my largest was the thought that I would have to keep records of some kind. I don't have a talent for that. When my sixth client sent me a contract, I searched diligently for a book called, say, "The Smallest Amount of Accounting Knowledge You Need to Avoid Getting Thrown in Jail," but didn't find such a thing. All the books I could find seemed to imagine that I was -- well, an accountant.
Office Accounting Professional 2008 doesn't assume this. It is bossy software.
You know what I mean about bossy software. It reminds you to apply payments to invoices and nags you about putting in people's names correctly and won't let you charge people for "June."
In general, I don't like bossy software. Bossy word processing programs often just don't understand complex syntax and don't have as large a vocabulary as I do, and I really don't need my computer to warn me that I haven't been properly introduced to websites.
But the bossiness of this software means that someone like me can put her data in correctly enough to send it off to the accountant -- and there is a system for doing that, too.
I scoffed at the set-up poster, by the way, but it was nice to have some large paper showing all the steps in order. I had no trouble getting the software installed, everything was done by wizards, and overall I found the whole package reassuring.
Now, I have no employees, and I have no interest in eBay, so I sympathize with those who felt that there were more parts to this than they needed. However, I found that this package has just the amount of power I need for keeping track of hours, jobs, clients, income, and expenditure. If I have employees some day, I won't have to learn new software. I can foresee needing to use the banking features, so I'm glad they're there. The extra features don't hamper my use of what I currently need, and I've had the experience before of spending more on trading up than I would have if I'd bought something more powerful to begin with.
I would strongly recommend this package for small businesses.

  • The Lesser of Evils (vs Quickbooks)?
After having been a loyal Quickbooks user since 1999 I'm fed up with the downward spiral of Intuit products. Every new version of Quickbooks is slower, has more bugs, and more popup "ads" and other annoyances that simply make it harder, instead of easier, to get things done. In addition, Intuit's support, maintenance and upgrade policies are some of the worst in the business.

So the above is why I finally decided to check out Quickbook's competition. The street price of MS Accounting Pro 2008 is about the same as Quickbooks Pro. The install went pretty slow--especially converting 9 years of Quickbooks data and transactions. But it completed without any errors or problems.

My data seems to be intact, and for the most part, I've run several reports over various periods that agree with the same reports in Quickbooks. So far so good.

I like Microsoft's interface better than Quickbooks. It's more like other MS Office applications. The product loads much quicker than the newer versions of Quickbooks (which got painfully slow starting with the 2007 edition).

Microsoft has really leveraged integration with other MS Office applications. If you like to use Excel to analyze data, crunch numbers, etc, you'll enjoy how the Accounting Pro software will create custom spreadsheets for you. Likewise, instead of Intuit's clumsy forms editor in Quickbooks, Microsoft lets you use Word to design custom forms (like invoices) however you like.

So why only 3 stars? I have a few major gripes with Accounting Pro 2008:

The online banking is limited in comparison to Quickbooks (of course, online banking took a giant step backwards in Quickbooks 2009 with hundreds of users already complaining loudly). Some giant credit card companies, like American Express, are not even included in the Microsoft list of financial institutions. So if you want to import all those Amex transactions each month, you'll have to manually tell Amex to download a "Microsoft Money" file, and then manually import that file into MS Acct Pro. The software doesn't automate any of it for you.

Even for banks that are on Microsoft's list, the linkage seems very limited compared to what Quickbooks offers with the same banks. Microsoft's help files (and marketing materials) talk about 2-way direct links but I could find any banks that offered them.

The other big gripe are the reports. There is NO custom report facility where you can build a report from scratch. All you can do is modify the existing canned reports. And even that's fairly limited. I have a memorized Quickbooks report that sums the activity in half a dozen accounts. Microsoft can't do it. You're only allowed "up to 5" selected accounts as a filter. That's true for anything where you're selecting items. You only get 5. What's up with that? So I literally can't run my report. I also can't tell it to sum columns. I could export my data to Excel and do it there, but that's a lot of extra work compared to a single click in Quickbooks.

As others have mentioned, you may also not be compatibile with most of the accountants, auditors, etc. in the world. If you're running Quickbooks, you just export a copy of your data file to them. With MS Acct Pro, I'm not sure what you do unless they have the same software?

And then there are the add-ons. I don't currently use any add-ons with Quickbooks, but there are lots of them out there should you need something specific to your business, e-commerce, shopping carts, etc. MS only has PayPal and E-Bay (that I know of). More are sure to follow, however, especially if Intuit keeps going downhill and Microsoft keeps gaining market share.

I'm hoping Microsoft continues to improve the product adding better reporting, better online banking/credit card access, etc. Intuit clearly has lost focus with what their users want. Each new version of Quickbooks seems to have more unhappy customers than the last. At least Microsoft is offering a viable option for many Quickbooks users. That's a big step in the right direction.

  • Easy to use and intuitive
As an Excel devotee, I can say that Microsoft Accounting Professional 2008 is an easy convert for someone who's never used accounting software. It has a variety of templates that allow you to set up ways to monitor and track expenses. It has features like how to create purchase orders, track inventory, and run payroll, etc. As a small business owner (very small, employees = 1), I didn't really need all the extra features, but the ones that I did use were pretty intuitive. It does, however, allow me to bill clients an invoice using Microsoft Outlook, and with a nice, professional looking template to boot. It provides easy integration with Excel, allowing me to transfer business reports between the two seamlessly. As a whole, I wish I'd gone with the Express, which is the free version, because supposedly it's got less junk that I don't need to bog down my time, but for the features, I'd recommend Accounting 2008 to a small business owner....more info
  • Good for crunching numbers (B+ Grade)
I was impressed by Microsoft's accounting program, even though it maybe be better suited for the professional or small business. But if you have a hard time controlling your check book or receipts, this is one program I would recommend.
The installment is pretty easy and and easy to use. Just a word of caution because if you want to upgrade, you may have to break out the waller. Overall, an interesting way to keep count of your finances.

  • Bloated, slow and counter intuitive.
It does do the basics well enough and plays well with the rest of Microsoft's products. However, save yourself a lot of stress and stay away from this. Installation is a pain, it's extremely difficult to share between computers and don't get me started on the constant need to reenter information.

Office Accounting Express is available from Microsoft as a free download. It has a lot of similar features and even it is more than my family (read: not buisnesses) needs....more info
