  • Sonoma Diet
The book was well written and easy to follow. It explained the diet and also gave many recipes. A few times I had to go back to review given information when it was referred to later on....more info
  • Great information but it is too hard for "real life".
I know that anything worth having isn't easy but this book is too strict FOR ME. I am very happy for the reviewers who are having success but I have to wonder how many of the reviewers were able to stick with it long term. I did this diet, along with my husband, for a month. We felt a lot better and we thought this was "the diet" for us.

Because it is so strict we would have a slip up that would take us away from the diet and have such a hard time talking ourselves into starting again. My husband and I would look at each other and say "we need to get started back on the sonoma diet again" and we would both, in our hearts of hearts, hope the other one wasn't ready because we dreaded doing it.

In real life it is too difficult to maintain. I really believe the best diet in the long term is the diet that we can follow long term. This diet is too restrictive for me (us). Also, there is so much prep work on this diet. There aren't any easy meals. My shopping time and my food prep time increased a lot when I was doing the sonoma diet.

My husband and I are now doing weight watchers and I do try to eat more of the healthy foods I learned about reading this book. I just watch portions and still am able to eat foods that help me feel "normal" and not too restricted in my choices.

That said, there is a lot of great information in this book for healthier living. I wish I could do it because I believe I would not only lose weight but I would be super healthy. Also, the recipes are fantastic!!

I had a hard time deciding on how many stars to give this book. I gave it 3 because I think it is well researched, well written, and super healthy but if it is too difficult to maintain I can't give it 5 stars....more info
  • Best "Diet" ever!
I have only got as far as the 10 power foods list when I started using those 10 power foods and have already in a little over a week, lost 3 poundsa - just changing what you eat, the quality and rightness of the food already helps the body to drop the extra weight, helps to clean out your system.

Good advice and a wonderful read....more info
  • Good Diet Book....
I liked the book and the easy reading. The diet does work and is better than Atkins (in my opinion) because of the variety of foods you can eat. Just like any other diet book/plan...you need to follow directions in order to achieve maximum results. I lost 10+ pounds and recommended it to my sister who likes it also and has lost several pounds in less than a month....more info

  • Good, balanced diet book
I bought this book on the recommendation of the friend who is a dietician. It is a balanced, practical diet. If you've done WeightWatchers or any other good (e.g., non-fad) diet, you're probably not going to learn an awful lot that you don't already know. The problem is in getting started and in actually sticking to a new way to eat. This diet uses an interesting concept in portion control, rather than weighing, measuring and counting points, which can become annoying, the author uses specific sized plates and bowls and teaches you to "eyeball" the portions. I think it's a great, practical, well-written book....more info
  • Very good reference
I read this book when I was having trouble losing some post-baby weight and after my doctor told me I had to watch my diet because of high cholesterol. I didn't follow the Sonoma diet to a "T", but I did use the advice in the book and the list of power foods as a guide, along with the materials provided by my doctor of course, and was able to lose the excess weight (about 10-15 lbs). I've started eating more sweets lately though, and have gained some of the weight back, but the book is still here and I will use it again to refresh my memory on what I SHOULD be doing. Following the recipes is just too much work for me, unfortunately....more info
  • Doesn't feel like a diet.
Fantastic! The recipes are delicious and satisfying. The Sonoma Diet is all about healthy eating. My husband enjoys the meals and he isn't even dieting. He just eats larger portions. I am losing weight slowly but steadily. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it took a while to get used to preparing all the fresh ingredients. After following the plan on and off for about 4 months I am much faster at preparing the food and thinking about what can be done in advance to make dinner quick. I also highly recommend the Sonoma Diet Cookbook....more info
  • Sonoma diet
Wonderful way to start a "diet"...10 days will move you into the mood to lose weight.
Believe it or not...one is not staving!
Watch the portions though.. The book gives you hints to control your carbs/sweets..
Good recipes! I love the way the book is set up. ...more info
  • 30 lbs lighter and still going
I was looking for a lifestyle change. Nothing --even Weight Watchers -- wasn't working for me anymore. I've bought lots of books on portion control, etc. This is the first book that really helped me believe that correct portions can be satisfying in every way. The recipies are delicious --though time consuming. I am so impressed! My husband and I have been eating within the principles laid out in this book for the past 4 months. We see no reason to go back to old habits or old recipies. Thank you to the author and the wonderful culinary contributors to this book -- you've made a lasting positive impression in my life....more info
  • The Sonoma Diet
This is a very good diet, if you want to use a Mediteranean Diet style. It helps me stay away from the refined flours and sugars. The recipes are very tasty, albeit sometimes time consuming if you don't have much time. But, I think it's worth it. I'm finding myself, not craving the sweets and salty foods, I did before...more info
  • Great for healthy weight maintenance
I've found other diets are better to truly shed multiple pounds, but this diet works well to keep the weight you've lost off in an enjoyable way. I lost 95% of my excess weight with Atkins, but was advised by a doctor not to make Atkins a lifestyle - the Sonoma Diet is my lifestyle answer. The diet is pretty easy to stick to - but food preparation will take a bit more work. However, you can get the hang of it and find your way of streamlining food prep within a busy schedule (many pre-packaged foods won't pass the label-test). A real benefit of this diet is that it is real food and it won't even look like you're dieting; you can feed the dinners to your family. A real strength of the diet is helping you to understand proper portion sizes - you can go back to eating out sometimes and after a few weeks enjoy wine and alcohol in moderation; a very workable solution for real people. I recommend this to anybody looking for a healthy way to stay trim while enjoying food and life. BTW: the follow-up cookbook has pictures and easier recipes (my family prefers the newer recipes)....more info
  • Great for those who love guidance
I am a 5 foot 4 female. I have been on the sonoma diet for around 10 weeks, and I dropped from 153lbs to 129lbs. So yes, it works really well! For the first 10 days (or phase 1), I lost 10 lbs. After that, I can lose 2-3 lbs per week if I stick with it, but during the period, I cheated a number of time by eating chips and things. I exercise some, but nothing rigorous, mainly walking.

I am not one who needs my diet to allow me to be creative. I love following rules and therefore, I bought the sonoma diet cookbook and always picked recipes that I would like from both books. I cook every night, and bring 1/2 of that as lunch to work the next day. The food is relatively tasty. It is amazing how my total calorie for the day is around 1000-1100 (after each recipe, there is a calorie count per serving), yet I never feel hungry (I eat meals at regular intervals and don't eat the suggested snacks). I pick recipes that contain a lot of vegetables and always feel full and satisfied after a meal. Apart from losing weight, the diet is very healthy. I have learnt many ways to cook vegetables and make them taste good.

I plan to follow these recipes for life as they are tasty, lean, healthy and saves me a lot of trouble to come up with something to cook.

In my opinion, the biggest assets of this diet are the recipes. So, I feel this diet works best if you don't want much freedom in your diet, willing to stick to the recipes and cook every night. If you need freedom in configuring your own dish, you can follow the general plate portion rules, but it is vague and you might end up eating a lot more calories than the recipes in the books and still feel unsatisfied and hungry. If you regularly eat out and don't like to cook, I feel this diet is hard to follow....more info
  • Enjoying the lifestyle
From a converted "Atkins" fan, comes accolades on this approach to dieting. It does seem similar to Suzanne Sommer's Somersize. It gives you recipes, shopping list, and pull-out carry-along pages. It even recommends quicky on the go meals. I also was able to stock my freezer with lean cuisine spa meals (for less than $3 they are great for my busy lifestyle). I am enjoying eating pasta and bread again (whole wheat!!!). Kashi cereals(don't stand down-wind), and my favorite-strawberries are also mainstays on this diet....more info

This book is going to make me into a top notch chef and a healthy one at that! It already has helped me impress my husband, sons, neighbors, everyone exclaims, "this is diet food"?!?! I am brought back in time to the years I spent in and around the valleys, healthy eating adn gee no wonder I was a lot trimmer back then. • Finally, something that works!
I have been on a stand still in my weight loss for over two months. I am 24 yo, 5' 5" and weighed 155 when I first began stage one. To give you some background here, two months ago, I began dieting eating 1300 calories or less and working out 60min of cardio 5 days a week. The scale didn't budge, nor did I give up. But there comes a time when you have to try something new. Thats when I found the Sonoma diet. I was interested immediatly due to the variety of recipes. I have just finished stage one (10 days) and already I have lost 4.5 pounds. Now after being stuck at the same weight for two months. This is a godsend! I have found the diet easy to stick with though it is a little bit tough in the first stage. The recipes are fantastic and the portion sizes are perfect to keep me satisfied. I recommend this diet to anyone who wants to eat better, become more healthy and loose weight. I know I won't give up until I loose every last desired pound. Good luck!...more info
  • Need Single Serving Sonoma Diet Recipes!
I flipped through this book and thought it sounded like a yummy way to get the refined sugar out of my diet. So even though I'm fit and don't really need to lose weight, I started off with Wave 1 (the most sugar free wave, and also the lowest calorie). I have to say that even though I really liked the Wave 1 recipes, the menu just didn't work for me. Because my boyfriend's a vegetarian and I'm not and we are on way different schedules, I was only making these dishes for myself. So if something said "4 servings," and it wasn't easy to divide, I generally had to eat it for 4 days. And because it was just me, I had to use recipes that required the same ingredients in an attempt to use up everything I bought at the market (and I still wound up with a lot more groceries than I could use, even though I planned very carefully). Needless to say, this got really monotonous! In addition, I exercise nearly every day, and I guess I do so at a more intense level than most because I was too weak on Wave 1 to work out like I normally do. I had to add the extra snack to keep my energy up enough to work out at any reasonable (for me) sort of level.

After about 5-1/2 days I couldn't take eating the same foods every day and I wanted to go back to my usual workouts! So I bailed on Wave 1. And since I was using the diet to eat healthier and not really to lose weight, I pretty much have just kept to the Wave 2 and 3 ideas. (Sans the wine - I'm not a wine person.)

All that said, the diet did help me realize that there's more to life than sugary coffee drinks in the morning, so I haven't gone back to that old habit. And I rediscovered the beauty of fresh food (something I've been forgetting about over the past few months). The book also helped me get back in the habit of snacking on things like fresh veggies and hummus, or grabbing a handful of nuts instead of sneaking a few spoonfuls of frozen yogurt from my boyfriend's stash. All this is very good!

And I still swear by a lot of these recipes! They are great! (When I had the Easy Balsamic Chicken with organic, free range chicken breasts, I thought I was going to die from pleasure. And I normally HATE chicken breasts!) They're just not made for people who eat solo. Seriously, if the author could come up with a "Sonoma Diet" recipe book containing nothing but one or two serving recipes, I would so get it!

If someone actually wants to lose weight, and they are serious about changing their way of eating (which is the only way you'll keep the weight off), I can see that this book could really turn things around. This book really does inspire you to eat better. And the recipes are tasty enough to serve to your family, even if they're not dieting and don't want to. Because of this - and because I'm actually still using the book - I'm giving it 4 stars....more info
  • Recipes might be good but this book is a real mess it need restructuring
My wife got this book. I looked at it in ernest. Yes it has a lot of recipes but in my opinion this book is a complete mess. I really don't like how it starts, it doesn't get to the point , it is quite convoluted and not an easy read. It really does not point your in the right direction quickly if you want to use or point you in the right direction if you want to do it. There is so much verbiage garbage in the beginning that it really is a boring read. Maybe you don't like the South Beach Diet but it has it down sized but it is easy read and gets to the point. Maybe the point about this " diet" it is more an eating plan vs a short term diet. But a book and a diet is only as good as it reads well, can be understood easily and does not have so much fluff that you don't have any idea what you are reader. While I think that this Sonoma diet might be good but I just don't like the way it reads. I think it needs a lot of restructuring . I might suggest just skip the front and go to the recipes and see if some of them sound good. Then try to find some parts of the chapters and the readings that make sense. If you can make heads or tales of it and can use, well by all means. I just will not spend time to make sense of it. I know my wife has not tried the book and she bought it and extolled the virtues of it !!! What does that say?...more info

I am a South African lady and I found the Sonoma Diet excellent. It was easy to implement, made good sense and in a few weeks I had lost about 7 kg - something I had not been able to do before. • Awesome recipes!
Whether you are interested in losing weight, or just looking for delicious, healthy recipes, this is definitely a book to try. My mother-in-law and her husband started this "diet" first, and when they'd invite us for dinner, we fell in love with the food! We thought the dishes were a little on the gourmet side, and they take some time to prepare and cook, but are well worth it! We love the South Beach books, too, but Sonoma actually allows and gives you the wine pairings for each dish. These are not "tiny" portions, people! They are the RIGHT portions, but will not leave you feeling hungry. Mixing meal plans from this book and South Beach, all 4 of us had great success losing and maintaining our weight. ...more info
  • The Last "Diet" Book You'll Ever Buy
It's almost a joke to call this a diet book. As others have said, it's a lifestyle book. I started the diet about 2 1/2 weeks ago and have lost about 7-8 pounds and I was only hungry the first few days. My afternoon sugar cravings disappeared and I have felt better than I have in a long time. And I will confess, I did have one small margharita and some wine in Wave I and still lost weight. I've now added back some fruits and natural sugars and it's amazing how much sweeter they taste. I've always poured sugar over my cereal and now I find that berries give it plenty of sweetness. The recipes are great although time consuming in the beginning, especially if you're not used to preparing whole foods. The plan can be expensive if you follow to the letter but I just buy certain amount of veggies and use what I have on hand. I replace as I run out. I highly recommend this book to those wanting a healthy change in their lifestyle. I also recommend buying the companion cookbook, great recipes!...more info
  • the sonoma lifestyle
I ordered this book along with the Sonoma Diet Cookbook...I decided to pursue this not as a diet to lose weight, but a lifestyle change...I tend to like this style of food more than my wife so I am having an easier time following these food guidelines than my wife is...I am not weighing myself because I am not using this as a diet, but rather to change my eating habits, but I have noticed my clothes fitting a little looser, my blood sugars are gowing down, I don't feel the sugar spikes I used to feel eating white flour and sugar...I am extremely happy with this lifestyle guide.......more info

This book was an extremely easy read with great recipes included! The diet is easy to follow, although giving up sugar for 10 days was hard. But now that the first 10 days are over no one even knows I'm on a diet. I lost a total of 10 lbs in the first 10 days (even while cheating a few times)!! So over all a great way to kick off a new healthy eating lifestyle....more info

  • Best Diet Ever
I bought this book as I was advised to eat a healthier diet because of high cholestoral, and was told the Mediterranian Diet was the best diet to follow. I bought this book as an introductory offer to a book club, so thought I could not lose by the price I had to pay. So I bought it on a whim. Really not expecting alot from it. It is the most AMAZING food plan I have ever tried. The food is exceptional. I have told all my friends and family about it, and encourage them to try it. It is AWESOME. I have been following this plan for about a month and everything I have made is so delicious. I have not yet tried all the recipes, but cannot wait for the next book to come out and have pre-ordered it. I have 2 teenaged sons that although they know they are eating healthy, they absolutely love our new meals. They look forward to what is for dinner the next night because these meals have so much flavor. Even their friends "drop" by at meal time because the boys tell them about the great food I am making. They have even gotten involved with the preparation and admit, yes it is a little more work than popping a frozen pizza in the oven, but well worth the extra effort. I would rate this book 10 stars. Yes, i have lost unwanted pounds, but the motivation was feeling better and achieving better health. The weight loss has been a wonderful bonus. Who would have ever thought eating healthy would be so good...more info
  • Very delicious recipes!
We all decided we wanted to lose a few pounds and so I bought this book. Although my husband quickly started complaining that he was hungry afterward or didn't like the "healthy bread", the menu is diverse and definitely healthy. He eats most of the stuff anyway and doesn't even know it! It is amazing what the word "diet" does to someone!

Anyway, the recipes were delicious and interesting with a mediterranean flair and we did lose weight. I didn't really need to lose, but I went on the diet to help out and make it easier on myself in the kitchen.

The only problem I ran into was that it was time consuming as you often have to follow three different recipes for one meal. Also, you have to be very organized....making a strict shopping list and insuring that you have the stuff in the cabinet for upcoming days.

For instance, I had a hard time finding Chipotle Peppers in Adobo sauce. You'd think here in Florida this wouldn't be a problem, but it was. I did find them, next town over, at a Publix that caters to ethnic food lovers. They were HOT. Good, but HOT.

Ultimately, however, it is a very good diet geared to readjusting your metabolism. It cuts out sugar for the first 10 days and you use very little fat, only olive oil.

I loved the diet, except that it was a bit time consuming, but anything worth having is worth the effort.

Give it a try! ...more info
  • The Sonoma Diet Works!
I started this diet a skeptic. I wanted to lose at least 20 lbs, but I wanted to do it eating "real" food. I wasn't interested in a fad diet that required skipping food groups or eating prepared meals. I needed a plan that I could adapt into a lifestyle change once I reached my goal. I first read about the Sonoma Diet in a magazine for new mothers. What hooked me was the fact that the plan includes a glass of wine with one meal after the first 10 days of the diet (if you wish.)

Seven weeks later, I am one pound away from reaching my goal. I've lost 19.5 lbs, and it hardly feels like I've been dieting. I won't lie - the first 10 days of the diet (Phase 1) were hard. I felt tired, hungry, & lacked energy. That quickly changed once I entered Phase 2, however. Now I have more energy than ever, probably due to my weight loss. The Sonoma Diet has taught me appropriate portions using the size of my dishes as a reference. The biggest change is that I've eliminated refined flours (white bread) from my diet, but I've found that I actually enjoy whole wheat bread products better anyway. Although sugar & desserts are actually banned on the diet, I indulge once every weekend as a treat and I've still been losing weight steadily. Every recipe I've prepared from the book is outstanding and flavorful. In my mind, those recipes are the key to success on this diet - they're so good that I'm enjoying my meals even more than when I was on the diet. My family eats the same food I prepare, I just watch my portions more carefully than they do.

Depending on your previous lifestyle, there IS a fair amount of meal preparation involved. You will need to buy a lot of fresh produce on at least a weekly basis. Some of the ingredients are expensive, but it's a worthwhile investment. You'll need to stock up on some pantry staples like extra virgin olive oil, red wine vinegar, and kosher salt which are used in most of the recipes. If you're used to preparing dinner most nights of the week, it's really not that much of a change. I've found that I usually have enough leftover dinner for lunches the following days. Breakfasts are simple & satisfying - you can choose from whole grain cereal, eggs, and whole wheat toast.

Since my goal was so easy to reach, I'm planning on losing another 5 - 10 lbs. I would definitely recommend this diet to anybody. I'm looking forward to purchasing the Sonoma Diet cookbook later this year. ...more info
  • Comparing South Beach and Sonoma Diets
I got the Sonoma Diet book because I wanted to lose weight, eat well and drink wine. I have tried South Beach, it worked very well the first time and I lost about 20 lbs. Then I got pregnant and had to switch to the "whatever doesn't make me puke" diet. After I had my baby and finished breast feeding, I tried to go back on South Beach, and it just didn't work, the weight wasn't coming off like it did the first time. Diets as restricitive as South Beach phase 1 are impossible to stay on if you don't see results very quickly to motivate you to keep going. So I needed a change and decided to try the Sonoma Diet. After I started reading it I realized it was VERY similar to South Beach. It has 3 phases (called Waves here) and the first is very restrictive, so restricitive in fact, that you may have NO WINE in the first Wave, which greatly disappointed me. The main differences from South Beach are:
    1) the first Wave is 10 days instead of 14
    2) you can have some whole grain foods in Wave 1 on Sonoma, you can't on South Beach
    3) there is an emphasis on portion control on Sonoma, not so on South Beach
    4) Sonoma instructs you to compose your meals of specific ratios of food, e.g. a Wave 1 dinner should consist of 50% vegetables, 30% protein and 20% whole grains
Aside from that, they are pretty much identical. I agree with other reviewers that the Sonoma diet doesn't give you much help with controlling your cravings. South Beach is more realistic because it recognizes that some people may fall of the wagon and gives advice if you do, as well as tips to avoid it, like eat a sugar-free fudgesicle instead of pigging out on ice cream. The Sonoma book basically says just be tough and stick with it, and hang on until Wave 3 when you can have a dessert once a month or so. The recipes in this book are time consuming to prepare and require many fresh ingredients which a) are expensive, and b) necessitate more frequent trips to the grocery store. Sonoma does not give you any expectations for how much weight you will lose in Wave 1 either, South Beach clearly tells you 8-12 lbs. I also think that the Sonoma diet book gives some seemingly contradictory information. For instance, the meal plans given will sometimes not conform to the proper veg/protein/grain ratios they instruct you to follow elsewhere in the book. I think both diets are valid and will make you healthier if you follow their tenets. Sonoma has inspired me to make healthier meals using fresh ingredients instead of serving my kids processed nuggets all the time. Of course, I have the time to do this because I am a stay at home mom. If I was working full time and caring for a family, I would probably want to throw this book out the window. But between the 2 Sonoma diet books and 3 South Beach diet books I own, I have a vast collection of healthy recipes. That and my treadmill will hopefully lead to weight loss rapid enough to keep me motivated to continue. ...more info
  • This is FABULOUS!
When I bought the Sonoma Diet book, I was ready to make a healthier lifestyle change for my husband and I. I had packed on a few pounds and so had he. I liked this diet because it's all about instilling a well-balanced diet with the right portions. I'm 8 days into wave 1 and have already lost 12 lbs. The first couple days I was hungry, but after you get throught that it's much easier. What also impressed me was how delicious the recipes are, and there's a decent amount of ingredient overlap. We're actually saving money on groceries from not buying prepared/processed food. I'm already looking forward to my first glass of wine!...more info
  • Finally A Diet With Taste
I have read many a diet book in my day. This is the first one that I didn't feel I would be deprived of foods that I really enjoy. They include full menu plans for the first and second stages of the diet (24 days worth) as well as the recipes for all meals. It makes the plan so easy to follow. And the best part is that I have yet to make anything that wasn't easy to make and incredibly flavourful. O yes, I've lost weight too....more info
