About Recumbent Exercise Bikes
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don't take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out.

The term recumbent literally means "lying down." Exercising in a recumbent or reclining position allows the user to have full ergonomic back support, without causing strain on the arms, neck and shoulders, all of which can be common effects of using an upright bicycle. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

Features:
  • Compact recumbent exercise bike for the home with 11 workout programs
  • Grip heart rate sensors enable you to monitor your fitness level
  • Computer controlled, eddy current resistance with 8 levels
  • Workouts include six preset profiles, one manual, three heart rate control, and one target heart rate
  • 275-pound maximum user weight: measures 58.5 x 26 x 36 inches

Customer Reviews:

  • Need advice from other owners
I assembled the bike in @1.5 hours, and aside from not being able to get the pedal straps outer knobs into the strap slots (others have had this problem, per reviews), it was not too difficult. However, I am not able to get the seat to lock into any position. If I am standing next to the bike, and push down on the lever, it seems to lock--but as soon as I push or pull on the seat, or sit on it (I weigh 130 lbs.), it slides out of position and moves downward. I can only keep it locked by holding the lever down with my hand as I pedal. Has anyone else had this problem, and solved it?...more info
  • Best online purchase ever!
This exercise bike is EXACTLY what my overweight body and bad knees need. I get great exercise from the programs, it was fairly easy to put together, and the thing is just so quiet its unbelievable. I have it facing the TV in the gameroom and I watch ballgames and exercise at the same time. Absolutely the best online purchase I have ever made....more info
  • recumbent Schwinn 20 series- hmm
Went together easy, and well. light weight, easy to operate, but now has an annoying "thunk" feel when in use that is felt through the foot pedals.like there's a catch somewhere on the belt. have only had the bike a little over a month and frustrating to have to deal with. ...more info
  • ooooo that smell, can't you smell that smell
I really wanted to like this bike. Using a recumbent bike has always been my favorite way to burn some extra calories when I get out of shape. And I have. So I saw this Schwinn for less than $300 which was frankly quite surprising, but as they say, you get what you pay for.

The bike assembled easily enough, the instructions weren't difficult to follow and they even provided tools for assembly (although you'd be better off using something of your own if you have decent tools). Once assembled and powered on, I hopped on the bike to give it a spin. Initially I was impressed. The bike was sturdy, easy to adjust and once I glanced at the manual, easy to program.

I set the bike for my age(32) and 90% target heart rate, and 40 minutes. After five minutes or so, I realized something was wrong. At this point, I had been pushing the maximum resistance the bike could give me for a couple of minutes and it couldn't get my pulse rate over about 145. Now, if I were some fitness junky who works out all of the time, maybe I could see this, but I'm 5'11" and 215lbs(quite chubby). I canceled the workout and tried again at 70% target heart rate and that worked better. It still had to go up to maximum to get me to THR (140), but once there it bounced up and down to keep my pulse in the target range.

After a 40 minute workout, I noticed something else wrong. According to the machine I had burned close to 900 calories! There is positively NO WAY I could have burned much more than 1/2 of that in that time frame at my current fitness level. When I was in the Air Force 6 years ago and working out 5 times a week, I would burn about 600 calories in a 45 minute workout on a recumbent bike at the gym (same ballpark for all of the 10+ different bikes at the gym). That was when I weighed about 180lbs and was much younger.

After a few workouts I noticed yet another problem. The bike emits a bad smell from the main compartment (and no its not BO). I don't know if it is caused by friction from the workout or what, but it gets worse as the workout progresses. At this point, I emailed amazon for an exchange thinking the bike was defective. The exchange policy worked as well as possible for a 90lb piece of exercise equipment and I received a new bike promptly.

Unfortunately, the new bike is exhibiting the same problems (although to a lesser extent) as the old one. The smell isn't as pervasive, but still shows up during/after long workouts. The calorie count is slightly closer to believable, but I still think it is way off. I'm not going to send it back however, because wrestling the pieces back into the box once was all the fun I could stand, so I'm left with a slightly smelly bike that tells me I working out harder than I actually am (and will probably not be good enough to get my heart rate up if I actually get back into shape.

For what it is worth, my parents have one of the more expensive Schwinn models (I think it is a 230 or 231) and have had no problems at all and it gave a more realistic calorie count when I rode it. Perhaps the company simply skimped a little too much on this economy model. My advice would be to recommend stepping up to one of the better models and avoid the active 20 series.

Oh, one last thing, if you are over 6ft tall, don't expect to be able to completely extend your leg, even with the seat all the way back. I have the seat all the way back and can just barely go through a full range of motion. ...more info
  • Another reason I buy from amazon.com
The Schwinn Active 20 Recumbent Bike arrived.
    The seat was not adjustable.
I contacted the supplier who sent me a replacement bike
an d instructions to get rid of (trash) the old bike.

I want amazon.com to know why I buy from them.

    Thank you amazon.com...more info
  • Perfect, especially on a budget
I couldn't afford to spend $500+ on a bike to get a workout. I got this for $250 on amazon and couldn't be happier. It came in perfect condition and actually faster than the estimated shipping. It is ridiculously heavy so if you live in an apartment, make sure someone is home to take the delivery.

I live in an apartment, and this thing fits perfectly. I workout all the time, at least 4-5 times a week. This thing definitely keeps you motivated to work out because it is comfortable and easy to use. Especially if you place it in front of a TV. You can barely hear it. If you are looking for a high quality recumbent bike on a budget, then buy this bike. I recommend it to all of my friends. ...more info

Easy to use and adjusts pretty well for different size users. Not quite as easy to peddle as bikes available in the health clubs and no arm action....more info
  • 2 thumbs up
I am so happy with my purchase of the Schwinn Active 20 Series Recumbent Exercise Bike. It was delivered in a timely manner. My husband and 8 year old son assembled it in about an hour. They said it was, "simple."

The bike works like a dream. It is SO easy to adjust the seat. It has some challenging workout features. The seat is fairly comfortable. It is absolutely silent. I love the smoothness of the ride. A great bike!...more info
  • The Schwinn Active 20 met all my expectations
After reviewing many Amazon reviews and looking at many models of exercise bikes at local sports stores, I purchased a Schwinn Active 20 recumbent bike. The features I was looking for were silent eddy current resistance, low and sleek profile for stability and comfort, good ergonomics and easy to adjust, no power consumption (no need to plug into outlet), enough resistance to give me a good workout, and durability.

Since I didn't care if the bike arrived in 5 days or 11 days, I opted for the free shipping and saved $53 in shipping cost. To my surprise the bike showed up at my front door the day after I placed the order with the box in good condition.

The assembly was straight forward and took me 35 minutes. The assembly directions were clear and easy to follow, and all the necessary tools were included. The bolts and washers were organized and clearly labeled.

After assembly, my family helped to break in the bike. It adjusted easily to suit user heights ranging from 4 ? feet to 6 feet (70 to 185 lbs). The seat was well cushioned and comfortable enough for extended use. The unit was extremely silent and smooth at all resistance levels. There was no smell of any sort even after 60 minutes of continuous use at higher resistance levels. The Active 20 is well built with heavy duty metal parts. It is very stable and did not rock or sway during use.

This unit is heavy, but the built in tilt up wheels made it easy to move. My only minor complaint is the battery powered display (4 C sized batteries were included in the package) can be hard to read at times, since it does not have internal lighting. The control was easy to understand and use, even without reading the directions. New resistance took a second or so to kick in after any adjustment. The resistance levels should be adequate for most people, but the availability of even higher levels would have been nice. The heart rate monitor was accurate, but the calorie calculator must be way off. There is no way I can burn off 250 calories in 15 minutes on this unit (this was noted by some other reviewers as well). This unit does not require AC power, so placement is not limited by the availability of power outlets.

So far this exercise bike has met all of my expectations. We'll see about the durability, although the Active 20 seems well designed and well built. I will recommend this bike to all my friends, family, and my fellow Amazon shoppers....more info
  • Great Bike Great Value
I originally purchased a cheaper recumbent bike by Stamina, it had missing parts and once that problem was solved it turned out was defective anyway (the monitor didn't work at all and the tension would not adjust at all). I did more research and visited various stores to actually try these bikes out. The Stamina's frame actually seemed to hold up better than most other bikes in the $200 range, which was almost upsetting as I couldn't afford the more expensive bikes, but the Schwinn had much better features, smoother and obviously better built. For just a little more than the others, you get a great bike, and this is considerably less than what other quality bikes are going for. All the parts were carefully packaged (nothing missing!) and instructions were easy to understand. It took about an hour to put together, carefully reading all materials before doing any of the work. Once put together, I thought that the seat adjuster was broken, but it turned out just needed a firmer push to lock in place - it works perfectly, quiet, smooth, provides a great workout and I absolutely love and recommend it!...more info
  • Schwinn Active 20
I just got this bike last week and I love it my kids love it too they are 15yr & 8yr in the afternoon I can forget trying to get a turn to ride it . Its a good thing I get up at 4:30am but then again its so quiet nobody knows I'm on it. ...more info
  • Love this bike
I love this bike. It's comfortable and easy to use. It was very reasonably priced for such good quality. I hop on the bike and listen to books on CD. My only complaints: assembly took hours & the instructions for assembly weren't that good; the box it came in was heavy to transport; and it takes up more space than I would prefer. In spite of these issues, I really like it. It's transformed my workouts. ...more info
  • Great bike!!
We decided on this bike after doing a lot of looking around. It is very sturdy and comfortable to ride. It has many different program settings to change up your workout. We highly recommend this Schwinn!...more info
  • Exercise Made Easy
Purchased from Amazon and received it with free shipping. Sweet! Very easy to assemble--my wife helped me and we had it up and running in less than an hour--all necessary parts and tools for assembly were included.
The display panel is not lighted but has large numbers and is easy to read. The only drawback (and a minor one, at that) is that the operating
manual could be a bit clearer in some of instructions but anyone with a reasonable degree of intelligence can figure it out. The bike is great--my wife and I use it everyday and love it. It has built-in front rollers for easy portability, just lift the rear part and push to move it.For two older folks with arthritic knees, it is a perfect way to get our exercise!!!...more info
  • great bike
i love this bike. keeps track of everything for me. i ordered two of these-one for me and one for my mother. she loves hers too. its so quiet you can watch tv while you exercise....more info
  • Excellent Value
Just bought this bike. Opted for the free shipping with 5-9 day delivery but it came within 3 days! Took about 90 minutes to put it together the directions were easy to follow and parts easily identified. Bike is smooth and quiet. Seat is a little uncomfortable after an hour or so but not too bad. I agree with the reviewer who was 6'6", this bike would be uncomfotable for anyone over 6'2. I am 5'11" and the seat is almost back to it's limit on the frame. I have been using it for a week and so far very happy with it!...more info
  • Great deal (unless you are 6'2 or taller)
This bike was a good deal. For about 300$ (and free shipping!), it is easy to put together, quiet, doesn't take a lot of room and has a variety of resistances that will work for most people (if you are Lance Armstrong, look elsewhere). My husband assembled this bike in about an hour, without big problems. He cannot use it because, being 6'2, he finds it 'tight'. I, on the other hand, have been using it almost every day. It is extremely quiet and comfortable. I do not use the programmed workouts, but I set my resistance and check my own heart rate monitor (which is necessary since the bike's monitor does not work properly). The screen is a tad small, but not so small that it would bother a person with normal vision. This bike is quite good for cardio. It makes it easy to get a workout in while watching your favourite show or reading a magazine. For global fitness, make sure you also lift some weights....more info
  • Exactly what I wanted
I ordered this so that I could play video games/watch tv while exercising and it works great. The other reviews are pretty accurate. The seat wears your bum out a little bit, but after a few weeks of using it you toughen up....more info
  • I Love This Bike!!
I ordered the Schwinn Active 20 Series Recumbent Exercise Bike directly from Amazon.com, and received it 2 days after I placed my order. It was simple to assemble, it took me and my boyfriend less than an hour. I am using the bike to get in better shape and lose some weight. I have owned the bike for a little more than a week, and use it almost every day. The programs are great, if you want a higher resistance you just have to push the "up" arrow. Or, you can use the "manual" setting and create your own workout by using the "up and down" arrows. I am very happy with my purchase and recommend this bike to anyone....more info
