Product Description

Set in the weeks after Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance: Retribution follows the story of former British Marine, James Grayson. After a personal tragedy, he is forced to kill his own brother inside a Chimeran conversion center; Grayson goes on a vendetta to destroy every conversion center he can find. Eventually Grayson learns that his efforts have been futile, in Western Europe the Chimera have evolved a new method of converting humans. The European resistance, the Maquis, enlist Grayson's help, and he joins Cartwright and Parker in Operation Overstrike. The war to retake the European continent has begun.

The third game in Sony's Resistance franchise, and designed exclusively for PlayStation Portable, Resistance: Retribution is a third-person perspective shooter that continues the story of humanity's battle against the alien-like Chimera and the biological terror they threaten the world with. Set in an alternate Earth history, circa 1951, the game takes place between the events of PlayStation 3 blockbusters Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. In this game world, although WWII never happened, mass destruction on a worldwide scale remains humanity's fate, and retribution against and eventual conquest of the Chimera are the player's goals.

New Story, New Anti-hero
Resistance: Retribution follows the story of former British Marine, James Grayson. A veteran of the struggle against the Chimera in Britain following their conquest of the European continent, he did not escape those battles unwounded. Months prior to his entrance into the game, while leading an attack on a Chimera conversion facility--locations where humans are changed into monstrous slaves serving the Chimera--he was forced to kill his own brother in order to keep him from turning into one of these abominations. Following this Grayson goes on a vendetta to destroy every conversion center he can find, eventually even deserting his unit to fulfill his lust for revenge, a crime which he would be locked up for. Unfortunately, for all his compulsion, success and sacrifice Grayson learns that his efforts have been futile. In Western Europe the Chimera have evolved a new method of converting humans, one about which nearly nothing is known. Aware of his experience with the Chimera, the European resistance--the Maquis--enlist Grayson's help, and he joins Cartwright and Parker in Operation Overstrike, and so the war to retake the European continent and the game begins.

Advanced Targeting and Cover System
With easy access to a weapons inventory, reloading commands, intel and player movement options, gameplay in Resistance: Retribution is easy to pick up and generally similar to many third-person shooters on the PSP platform, but two things also make it a stand out, its advanced targeting and cover system. Unlike many other games that limit players to manual firing, Resistance: Retribution gives players the option of aim assist. Accessible quickly through the options menu, this allows players the choice of automatically locking on to the closest enemy target, to target manually or toggle between the two. Similarly, unlike other games that require you to push a button to lock you to a piece of game environment to be used as cover, here that is automatic. Just walk up to to a wall or ledge and Grayson will duck behind it automatically and will stay ducked even as he creeps from side to side. And since aim assist is constantly active you are also able to time your fire and weapon switching from the safety of cover.

Game Modes
One of the things that sets Resistance: Retribution apart from other shooters on the PSP is the variety of ways to play. Along with a compelling singleplayer campaign it also comes packed with multiplayer options that wirelessly support up to eight players in both ad hoc and infrastructure configurations. Along with familiar modes such as Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag, players will also enjoy two modes called Containment and Assimilation. In addition, players who have a PS3 and a copy of Resistance 2 will also have access to two additional modes, "Infected Mode" and "Resistance Retribution Plus" via the "Resistance Connect" game feature. To access Resistance Connect, players simply load their copies of Resistance: Retribution and Resistance 2, then connect your PSP system to your PS3. Once you’re connected, Resistance: Retribution becomes "infected."

Infected Mode
Infected Mode provides an alternate story within Resistance: Retribution. While in prison for desertion, James Grayson is recruited by Specter Lieutenant David LaSalle (from Resistance 2) and is infected with a mutated version of the Chimera virus, a different version of the virus than the virus that infects Nathan Hale. While playing in Infected Mode, Grayson wears a SRPA uniform and now has glowing Chimera eyes. Grayson now has regenerative health and can breathe underwater. The HE .44 Magnum from Resistance 2, which fires explosive rounds that can be triggered remotely becomes available as a weapon. An entirely new class of intelligence also becomes available that is hidden throughout the levels. Collecting all of the "infected" intel will unlock another Resistance 2 weapon, Plasma Grenades. In addition, thanks to your new Chimera DNA you will have access to areas of the game previously unavailable, as well as experience new AI interactions with the characters you meet through out the game play.

Resistance: Retribution Plus
Resistance: Retribution Plus allows you to play the game using your PS3's DUALSHOCK 3 controller, while adding dual analog stick controls and rumble support. Simply activate this feature through Resistance 2, and then play the game on your PSP screen or through your televisions using the available video out function. This mode increases the challenge level and disables aim assist, allowing you to experience the game in an entirely new way.

Features:
  • Several multiplayer modes, including "Infected Mode" and "Resistance Retribution Plus" which extends gameplay for players who have a PS3 and a copy of Resistance 2.
  • A third person action-adventure game created specifically for PSP that bridges Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2.
  • Revolutionary Targeting System: Advanced third person targeting system designed specifically for the PSP system.
  • Over 10 different types of enemies, including Chimera from Resistance 2 and Resistance: Fall of Man (the Titan, Slipskull, Hybrids and Leapers) and all new enemies like the Hag and Cloven.
  • Intense eight player multiplayer gameplay with five game modes including Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Containment and Assimilation available via ad-hoc and infrastructure.

Customer Reviews:

  • Just plain awesome; one of the best games on the PSP
Sony's Resistance franchise is one of the best reasons to own a PS3, and when it was announced that it would be hitting the PSP in some form, saying there was some hesitation about it was saying it lightly. However, Resistance: Retribution for the PSP is a just plain awesome game that shows what the PSP can be capable of, and ends up being one of the best games available for Sony's maligned handheld. Playing as British soldier James Grayson, you take on the invading Chimera once again, this time using a third-person perspective. Regardless of the change in gameplay perspective, the fast and intense style of the series remains intact, and as fun as you'd expect as well. The game looks fantastic for a PSP game as well, and the single-player campaign is challenging, but the real meat and potatoes of Resistance: Retribution lies in its absolutely sick online multiplayer modes, which never stop entertaining. The game also features the ability to link up with Resistance 2 on the PS3, which allows you to "infect" your PSP to give James the abilities of Nathan Hale and more besides. The game's few flaws, namely its occasional shoddy voice work and getting used to its controls, are really nothing much to worry about, as the game winds up being a must play for PSP owners. All in all, Resistance: Retribution is just plain awesome, and is by and far one of the absolute best games to hit the PSP yet....more info
  • Great game
Quite simply, one of the most fun games for the PSP. The controls are simple to pick up and easy to learn and the action is fast and fun....more info
  • Resistance: Retribution

I enjoy the PSP gaming system but there really has not been that many games available. This game; however, exceeded all expectations. Outstanding...more info
  • Almost flawless adaptation of the Resistance series on PSP
I picked up this game on release day 2 days ago. I'vd played the single player campaign, as well as the online muptiplayer, so i'll comment on both.

    SINGLE PLAYER:
So far, the campaign as absolutely awesome! Story-wise, it takes place between Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. You play an ex-soldier came across his brother in a conversion center, and was forced to kill him before he converted to Chimera. All of this is explained to you in the Resistance: Fall of Man fashion. There is the same woman narrating (alot of people did not like how R2 scrapped this). The story is very well told to you, and really gets you involved.
    GAMEPLAY/CONTROLS
Sony Bend did the best they could with the controls, especially for an over-the-shoulder 3rd person shooter. First, i absolutely love the aim-assist function. The PSP isn't the easiest system for aiming since it lacks a second joystick, so in Retribution you have a wide yellow box, any time an enemy is in the box it will automatically aim at them. (you can turn this off in the options to make it more difficult) Second, the cover system is actually pretty cool. Its a Gears of War style of taking cover minus having to hit a button every time: if you walk up to a wall you will automatically take cover, if you pull the trigger you pop out and start shooting, let go of the trigger and you go back into cover. As for guns, there are alot :) Lots of old ones from R1 and R2, as well as a couple new ones.
    ONLINE:
This is one of, if not the best, games for online play on the PSP. It is Resistance: Fall of Man sized down for the PSP. You have death match, ffa, team death match, etc., with up to 8 players (4 on 4). You can chose ranked or non ranked matches as well.

Overall, this is probably one of the best games out for the PSP, both for single and multiplayer. Its about time a developer came out with something like this, nothing has been close since God of War. DEFINITELY worth 40 bucks. Go out and buy!...more info
  • Resistance: Retribution
Resistance Retribution is a great game to come to the PSP. The graphics are almost as good as God of War Chains of Olympus except some character animations look a little blocky. The cutscenes look crisp and clear on the PSP's LCD screen. Even though there is one analog stick the controls are easy to use. There is an automatic lock-on when an enemy comes into view. Or you can manually aim which is a little tougher. Even though I've never played Resistance Fall of Man or Resistance 2 because I don't have a PS3, this game turned out really good and I would strongly recommend this to anyone. Its rated M for blood and gore, partial nudity, strong language, suggestive themes, and violence....more info
  • Awesome game!!!!!
This is by far the greatest game out there for the PSP. It reminded of the joy I had the first computer game I ever played- Doom. It's just plain fun with a great background story and lots of things to kill. I played the whole game in Normal mode and while it's definitely hard in parts, and frustratingly difficult toward the end of the game, it can be completed which is always great. I was also pleasantly surprised with how long the game was- it just kept going and going. Truly a magnificent game....more info
  • a great game to add to your psp library
There are alot of games out for the psp however, there aren't alot of good games. This is one of them, along with god of war, syphon filter and ratchet and clank. The graphics, control and sound are all excellent. The only complaint is that it is a third person shooter and not a fps....more info
  • The best psp game ever made
I have had my psp for three or four years and it does not have many good games. For a long time monster hunter freedom 2 was my favorite game but this may have surpassed it. I haven't gotten half way through single player yet and i have never played multiplayer on psp before but this is a very good game. i am obsessed with this game! When i saw the first screenshots, i thought the graphics wouldn't be good but i was wrong!...more info
  • Resistance... simply amazing.
Best way to sum up Resistance: Retribution... simply amazing. It's my first Resistance game, but the gameplay is intense. Amazing graphics (PSP games should all be this good), great plot (really involves you), and very good controls (third person shooters, take a note!). I've only had the game a week, but have hardly been able to put it down. Definitely one of my favorite games now. My only issue is that there isn't a "save" option in the middle of a level which can get on your nerves if you're only able to play about 5mins or so. However, I'll overlook the save bit since I love the rest of the game. Even the unlockables are pretty fun. Finding intel definitely gives the game some replay value as well as the Infected and Plus modes. Overall, this game is a must have for anyone that enjoyed Resistance, third person shooters or just wants a fun action game. I give it 5 stars... I'd give it 6 stars if that was an option!...more info
  • A must have for Resistance and shooter fans alike!!!
I am a big fan of shooters and love my PSP, but have found very few decent portable games in this genre. I took a chance on this game because it was produced by the same guys that made the "Syphon Filter" PSP games (If you are not familiar with them they are very well reviewed, wonderful games.) I am so glad that I did.

This game is fantastic. I will briefly list the pros and cons.

    The Pros:

    1) You can carry more than two weapons again. One of the things that made Resistance: The Fall of Man so good was the plethora of unique weapons always at your fingertips. Resistance: Retribution reintroduces this feature. The player is able to carry up to 12 weapons each with an alternate fire option giving you much creative freedom is solving the challenges that the levels through at you.

    2) The controls are well thought out and easily customizable. They work very well in the default configuration

    3) The story is easy to follow and compelling.

    4) The graphics are cutting edge for a portable game. They are stunning and really have to be seen to be appreciated.

    5) There are "Skill Points" and "Intel" documents to collect on each level which allow you to unlock new weapons and additional features. Re-playability is very high for this reason.

    6) "Infected mode" is an added value for owners of Resistance 2.

    7) The "infrastructure" multiplayer feature allows you to connect wirelessly (via the internet) with players all around the world for what is arguably the best multiplayer experience on any handheld to date.

    8) Resistance: Retribution "Plus" mode allows you to use a PS3 controller for PSP.

    9) The difficulty scales well. I have not been overly frustrated with any part of this game.

    The Cons:

    1) The only thing that I would like to see improved is that in "Plus" mode, you PSP is tethered to your PS3 through the USB cable. I don't know if it is technically possible to do it any other way, but it certainly limits the portability of your PSP.
Conclusion: At the end of the day, Resistance: Retribution will be remembered as one of the games that defined this generation of handheld games. Any fan of the Resistance series, or of this genre for that matter, would be remiss in not picking this one up. It is an absolute must have.
