Customer Reviews:

  • Try it
Ever since we were served McCann's steel cut oatmeal in a B&B in Ireland a few years ago, my family has eaten McCann's exclusively when we have oatmeal. I had some 20 minutes ago. Unlike the Quaker Oats we have all grown up with, McCann's is not mushy. It has a distinct texture that we enjoy. My wife says it's the best oatmeal she has ever eaten and she would not buy anything else. A couple of years ago, my motorcycle club was visiting Yosemite National Park, and I was surprised when one of the ladies requested McCann's at the resturaunt. I was doubly surprised when they actually had it available and served it to her. I recently gave a box of McCann's to a 99-year old man who eats oatmeal every day and says it's his favorite food. He did not like McCann's. It's not for everyone, and change is not always welcome when you're 99. McCann's costs a good deal more than Quaker, but you really should try it.

  • Works great with my french press coffee maker, great product
This is the only breakfast I have had that keeps me not feeling hungry until lunch. This has helped me change my life and I've lost 23 pounds in the last few months. Of course, I am exercising too, but I used to eat all morning at work. Anyway, the taste is much better than rolled. I have a water kettle for the french press and it is very easy to make this oatmeal at the same time as the coffee. I'm just now doing a second order, I find with a little salt, this oatmeal is even more delicious, better than it is with sugar or sugar substitute. ...more info
  • 5 stars
Our son put us on to McCann's Steel Cut Oatmeal, and this was our second order. In the past, we did not care for oatmeal much, but the McCann's steel cut is very different, and very delicious. We have shared with friends who did not care for oatmeal, and they are eating McCann's every day like we are. ...more info
  • McCann's Steel Cut Oatmeal, Quick & Easy
This is the best oatmeal I've ever eaten. I have tried other brands, but this is by far the best....more info
  • Excellent cereal!
Not an instant cereal, but a quick cooking version. This Steel Cut Oatmeal cooks in 5 min. rather than the usual 1/2 hour. The taste is excellent and it is delicious with raisins and walnuts. Some sugar-free applesauce on the top with fat-free half and half and you have an excellent breakfast....more info
  • Oatmeal heaven.
I bought this kind of quick cooking McCann's for my mother who likes the idea of five minutes in the microwave then to table. I really don't see a whole lot of difference in this and the 30 minute oatmeal. The taste and texture are almost identical. Not as rich and nutty tasting as the 30 minute variety but very close. I prefer the 30 minute kind myself, but this made mom very happy, so I am very happy. My family and I are sold on steel cut oats now. We just don't like the other kind anymore....more info
  • Very good!!
This product is not only good for you but has a wonderful taste and texture to it. I put a little brown sugar and raisins in mine and it was so good! takes hardly any time to make too quick and simple and healthy you cant beat that!...more info
  • Yummy - Value is questionable.
I'd compare local grocery prices on this, but it is very good. The texture is so much better than rolled oats, and the five minute cooking time is so much more convenient than other steel cut oats, when I'm trying to get breakfast ready for hungry children. ...more info
  • McCann's Steel Cut Quick & Easy Oatmeal
I read all the other reviews and tried cooking this product both ways - on the stove and in the microwave. Microwaving worked just fine for me; it did not overflow the bowl when I followed the directions. It has a good taste and texture and is very filling....more info
  • Yucky!
I bought this after I saw how healty it was after watching Alton Brown cooking show on foodnetwork. I let it cook all night in the crockpot. I have to say we couldn't choke it down. Maybe it's a taste you have to get used to. I prefer Quacker old fashioned oatmeal over this....more info
  • Better than regular ol' oatmeal, but not as good as the original.
I had never even HEARD of steel cut oats until Amazon had an amazing offer on them. I did some research and decided to give them a try. I am IN LOVE with the original slower cooking version. Best oatmeal I've had in my LIFE. I bought the traditional oats, and these faster cooking ones. Although both ARE very good, this just doesn't have the same chewy texture and delightful nutty flavor of the others. However, and this is a BIG however, they are still heads and shoulders above oatmeal made with rolled oats. So far I've tried making both kinds with water, milk and apple juice. Making them with apple juice, pecans, dried cranberries and cinnamon is by far my favorite, but I also like the ability to mix it up and make it any flavor I want. ...more info
  • Can't get enough
I never saw the Oprah or Alton Brown shows on steel cut oats; However Our family has always ate the steel cut oats. The Quaker oats ie., quick cooking oats are just not tasty - all the true oat flavor is prosessed out of these types of oats. It is well worth taking the time to make - As far as choking it down - ? - I don't get it - you can sweeten, thicken, or thin to your liking as you would using other hot cereal cooking method. The flavour and texture can not be compared to processed instant, or rolled oats.

  • No loss of quality despite the quick feature
Despite the fact these are quick-cooking oats, there is no loss of flavor. There is the characteristic nutty flavor of McCanns, which is not to be duplicated. These packets get over the issue of long cooking required of steel-cut oats for breakfasts....more info
  • It's not the same
We purchased this item because Amazon was out of the 16 oz. boxes of traditional McCann's Steel Cut Oatmeal, and several reviews indicated that there was no difference between the 5 minute variety and the traditional long cooking oats. Wrong. The taste is very similar, but the texture and nuttiness of the traditional McCann's is missing from this imposter. Steel cut oats are wonderful, in great part, because of the texture. It's missing from the 5 minute variety, or at least substantially reduced. A poor substitute for the real thing....more info

McCANN'S Steel Cut Oatmeal, Quick & Easy, 16-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 6)
As a Child and many years since, I have used McCann's Steel Cut Oatmeal. Use for breakfast, add to most kinds of cookies and sprinkle on loaves of homemade bread....more info
  • McCann's Steel Cute Oatmeal... yum!
I eat this for breakfast every morning. So, healthy and easy to make. It makes me feel better all around. Great source or fiber... I highly recommend it!...more info
  • Quick and Easy
I love this oatmeal. It's kind of chewy but I enjoy that. I use some splenda and raisins with it and it's great. It's really quick to fix too. Way nicer than having to cook it on the stove for a half hour. It keeps you full for a long time too. I would definitely recommend this. ...more info
  • Warning
This oatmeal is delicious and may be habit forming. After preparing the thirty minute variety, I wasn't expecting this to be as enticing. Wrong. It really takes only a few minutes and you have a version of the original steel cut oats with the texture simply a little finer. If you've had the original, think of each kernel being broken in half and you can imagine this product. I prepare it while I'm washing up in the morning, then let it sit while I walk the dog. In a travel mug, it's perfect to eat when stuck in traffic and it delivers a wonderful attitude adjustment. I prefer adding some dried unsweetened cherries and perhaps a bit of skim milk. I can't wait to use this in my deep dark chocolate cookie recipe that includes steel cut oats. Great recipe that I googled recently!...more info
  • Good stuff!
Delicious 'real' oatmeal, not the flavored stuff in packets many are used to. Try adding fresh berries or honey and cinnamon. Yummy! ...more info
  • $14.40 is cheaper than my local supermarket
The regular steel cut oatmeal takes too long to cook so we end up eating it less often than we should. These foam up so the instructions to cover and cook don't work for me. They taste okay and are less hearty and thick than the regular version. ...more info
  • Yum!
Delicious and healthy - I've learned to just cook it in my mini-crock pot when I want a hot breakfast at work. It cooks in about 20 minutes that way.

The microwave instructions were not for me. No matter how big the bowl was or how well I covered the bowl, I always ended up with 90% of the oats overflowing into a sloppy mess all over the microwave. With a large mixing bowl, I was able to minimize overflow, but then I was eating 1 cup of oats in a giant mixing bowl which was impractical and ridiculous. ...more info
  • Oatmeal?
Just as the box says, it's quick and easy. The only thing they neglected to say is that they're also delicious. The thicker nuttier texture of this Irish Oatmeal is, in my opinion, better by far than rolled oats. I prepare mine with a sprinkle of diced crystallized ginger and some dried fruit. Just the thing to get the day started....more info
  • Great
This is the first time I try steel cut oats and I loved the chewy texture and rich taste. They cook quick out-of-the-box, but I like to soak them overnight to make it even quicker. I mix them with about a tablespoon of oat flour for creaminesses, since steel cut oats will not absorb much liquid.

Great product, great price ($2.40 one-pound box); will definitely re-order....more info
  • Porridge
The best type of oatmeal according to Dr. Oz and the "You" crew. Lovely texture when cooked and the preparation is a relatively short period of time....more info
  • I cannot say enough good things about this product.

I first heard about steel cut oats on the Oprah show about its health benefits. First of all I DO NOT like regular oatmeal like you buy in the grocery store. I don't like the slimy texture. But I figured I'd try steel cut oats and I'm glad I did. They are delicous and very good for you! The warm nutty aroma when they are cooking is very appetizing and when you add a little bit of sugar or splenda and some cinnimon, it tastes fantastic! I also sometimes skip the cinnimon and add a tablespoon of granola and/or some dried berries. Excellent healthy breakfast. I highly recommend this product.

For those of you who are asking what the difference is between regular oatmeal and steel cut oatmeal:

-Steel-Cut Oats are whole grain groats (the inner portion of the oat kernel) which have been cut into two or three pieces using steel discs. Golden in color and resembling mini rice particles, they are as nature intended - nothing added and nothing taken out.

-Rolled oats are flake oats that have been steamed, rolled, re-steamed and toasted. Due to all of this additional processing they have lost some of their natural taste, goodness and texture....more info
  • YUM!!!!
This oatmeal is SO good! You can fix it in five minutes, and it tastes so much better than regular oatmeal. Add some berries or almonds to make more complete meal. I've had it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner - doesn't leave me hungry at all. There are a lot of boxes included in this pack, so make sure you have some people to share it with. My mom has already laid claim to some of my order and is hoping it will help improve her cholesterol levels....more info
  • Hearty, tasty, and quick
If you like steel-cut oats, this product serves it up much quicker than the traditional style. And the resulting cereal is an excellent approximation of what you'd get the old fashioned way. I had to modify their cooking directions for microwaving (I hate to dirty a pan and a bowl if I can use just the latter), but it is still about a five minute process. ...more info
  • Much better than your average oatmeal
While I have always liked oatmeal, this is incredible. My daughter and son-in-law who don't care for oatmeal asked for seconds and said it was "really good." The health benefits are great and I am looking forward to those benefits coming to fruition. The price is much better than the price in our supermarket. I highly recommend this product....more info
  • Very Good Oatmeal
I am now familiar with both the Quick and Easy and regular steel cut oats, the variation is nice, both are excellent, I make large batches and refrigerate, and reheat in the microwave, so cooking time is not so much of concern, but the quick and easy is my favorite. For me there will be no more rolled oats, these oats, when served with milk and sugar, are a very tasty and healthy meal....more info
  • Good healthy oats with a bit of tooth...
Delicious and healthy... much better than regular oats... Be aware that during the first phase of cooking (in the microwave, anyway) it will bubble up and over even a deep bowl if you don't keep a close eye on it, stop the microwave frequently to stir, etc. Not a problem once it starts to thicken up.

Great taste and texture.... to the reviewer who cooked it all night in the crockpot, to quote Dr. Phil, "What were you thinkin'??" (Southern accent on "thinkin'.) Maybe someone said that's the way to do it, but I think one of the great things about this product is it's al dente texture when cooked properly. Good stuff, Maynard!...more info
  • Good taste, easy to make
This oatmeal is very good tasting. It is quick to make compared to the basic steel cut oats. I wanted to try steel cut oats that I could make in the microwave at work. I found out that I needed a really LARGE bowl since it overflows using a smaller bowl. I was used to making the old fashion oats. I tried to make it in a smaller bowl but I had to stop the microwave and stir the oatmeal every minute. Too much work! Using a larger bowl, I look forward to the oatmeal every day for the taste and the ease of making it in 5 minutes. ...more info
  • save your heart
I have been eating steel cut oats everyday for three years. I don't eat red meat anymore. My blood test show (or prove if you prefer) that oatmeat can reduce your risk of heart failure and stroke. I was at a high risk ratio three years ago and now it is back to normal. Eat this oatmeal everyday. It works....more info
