Tom Venuto is the best at explaining things in a no nonsense, clear-cut way.   • well written, but nothing really new here
    If you've never read anything about eating right, fitness, or visualization, you'll love this book, because it presents a complete picture of all the factors that go into being slim and fit. If you HAVE read much in these areas, you won't find anything at all new. I was surprised, after hearing all the praise for Tom's online book, to find this book so mundane. It's quite well written, but I guess I expected more innovative ideas. Certainly it's great to have a common sense approach to nutrition/fitness, as opposed to the myriad books that fix on one idea and say it's the solution (don't eat carbs! don't eat fat! etc.), just to be new and different and sell, but if you read much about diet and fitness you will find this just a retread....more info
  • Great Book from a Wise Man, with ONE Weakness...
    On page 35 you'll find Myth #3, of the "8 Biggest Fat Loss Myths."

    Myth #3 Some people are diet-resistant and can't lose weight.

    I've got an issue with this... How can it be #3? Really... come on Tom it's got to be #1. Okay, "slow metabolism" is a good one too.

    Okay, they're all great and you blast all 8 of these self-limiting beliefs out of the water. I so appreciate it. Like so much of this book, as I was reading these I kept thinking that I'd written these myself and I probably have at some point but they are so clearly debunked, it's hard not to want to take credit for them.

    Like everything Tom does, this book is meticulously assembled, with care and detail. It covers the A-Z of fat loss from the inside out. For, like my own work, Tom is not just about the body, he's trained in the sciences of the mind and it shows. He recognizes that right action alone is not enough and not possible without right thinking.

    In the title line I reference a weakness, an issue with the book and that is... (trust that I share this from my own experience, both as a trainer and author with over 20 years in the fitness field) that it's too much. What I mean is that Tom so carefully and completely covers the issue of fat loss that he leaves the reader with no excuses, no way to fail, no ought except to take the responsibility themselves. That means that even with this amazing guide, some will continue to fail and when they do, they will revolt. They will feel exposed and resentful. Which in itself is no big deal but it will start to seep into reviews and comments. Hence forth let it be known that if something comes up that makes you ever question this work, it's likely due to this phenom.

    I have enjoyed the work greatly and appreciate the impact that I know it will make in this world. It is a book I will keep by my side and continue to reference and support.

  • It's about your thinking, not just a diet
    I enjoyed reading the book and there were a lot of chapters that I felt I really NEEDED to read. Those were the ones dealing with my thinking, attitudes and beliefs. I also appreciated Tom being honest about the fact that if you are cutting your calories, there are occasions when you will feel hunger, and you need to stick to your guns rather than feed yourself every time you get a hunger pang.

    I think one point Tom is trying to make is that we need to take control of our own health and our own fitness plan. It is easy to rely on the next diet book on the shelf to tell us what to eat, what not to eat, and what exercises to do and what pills to take. If it doesn't work we can always blame it on the author rather than taking responsibility and making adjustments as needed to be successful at reaching our goals. Tom gives us the tools to get our thinking right and to plan what to eat and how to exercise. but he isn't doing it for us, we have to do the work ourselves. ...more info

    I am a physician who manages a suburban metabolic and nutrition program for obese and overweight children. It amazes me how complex it is to unravel the passionate and unhealthy philosophy many people have about exercise and nutrition. So many people are struggling fruitlessly with their goals as they are overwhelmed by seemingly endless waves of misleading advertisements and contradictory information about lifestyle and nutrition. There is so much unbelievable noise out there that many people are left feeling hopeless, defeated and not knowing what to do. The Body Fat Solution is a very healthy, very welcome voice of reason among all that noise.

    As I develop nutrition plans for my patients I will frequently reference the precepts outlined in Tom Venuto's brilliant e-book Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle. Honestly, I found this e-book to be a very approachable and comprehensive volume dealing with nutrition, exercise and hormonal physiology. (I would highly recommend this e-book for anyone who wants a more detailed explanation of macronutrients, hormonal physiology, and meal planning.) However, The Body Fat Solution is an indispensable development to this excellent work.

    In my experience patients do not struggle as much with "what to do" but rather struggle with "the doing of it". In the first few consultations with a new patient I can usually disarm the passionate obsession with whatever flavor of macronutrient phobia they have and outline the physiological rational behind consistently eating a calorie based diet of lean protein, whole unprocessed foods, and essential fats. In this motivational clinical setting most patients will readily agree to begin journaling and commit to starting an exercise and nutrition program.

    However, the problems arise as soon as they leave my office and are once again buffeted by their busy schedule, advertising, misleading labels, psychological defense mechanisms and emotional ties to eating. Most of the time I spend on subsequent patient visits centers on developing strategies of how to interface the program we have developed into their lifestyle. The strategies revealed in The Body Fat Solution do an excellent job addressing these issues.

    The Body Fat Solution outlines all of the necessary tactics to tackle these intangible influences on our nutrition and exercise plans. The first four chapters outline the evolution of obesity and how our beliefs, attitudes and emotional ties to food play a significant role in this unhealthy homeostasis. In chapter five you are taken step-by-step through the essential process of goal setting and reprogramming your mental awareness of the beliefs and attitudes that can sabotage your plans. Then in chapters six through eight you are treated to the most insightful and logical nutrition and exercise program I have ever seen. Everything you need to know ... it's all there ... very motivational and very doable! Finally chapters nine through twelve outline all the necessary environmental and social strategies needed to start you on the way to maintaining your new and healthy self.

    Quoting The Body Fat Solution, "There is no way around it - to tackle a problem like body fat, which has so many causes, you must make changes in every area of your life. You have to eat better, train consistently, manage your emotions, change your thinking, get the support you need, and put it all together in a healthy lifestyle." I couldn't agree more. In my opinion The Body Fat Solutions gives you all the necessary tools to do just that.

    This book is absolutely the best book I have ever read about planning and living a healthy life. What really sets it apart is Tom's time and energy going beyond just counting calories and beyond exercise. All important factors of course, but what about the mental reasons we don't do what we know we should? How can I maintain my weight and not go back to my old ways? Venuto goes into great depth with planning, dealing with temptations, and mentally training your mind to create your body. This simply is the best "formula" for dealing with all angles of a complete healthy life style. This isn't a quick fix program.   • Simple & Honest Fat Loss Information
    It's really rare nowadays to come across a book that's not filled with pages of hype, questionable claims, or plugs for other products that you "must" to buy in addition to the book. So, when I got an email that Tom had written a new book, I was interested in checking it out since I enjoyed his e-book "Burn The Fat Feed The Muscle" (BFFM). While BFFM was aimed at more of a bodybuilding-type, "The Body Fat Solution" is written for the average Jane and Joe using a clear and easy to understand tone. Because of this, this is one of the few books that I feel comfortable giving to anyone, regardless of their current size, sex, or age.

    As someone who has lost more than 130 pounds, I appreciate that the main focus of the book is on how to be "mentally" prepared first before starting your fat loss journey. So many folks are ready to starve themselves and exercise to death before getting the muscle in between their ears ready.

    Yes, everyone knows that to lose fat they need to eat less and move more, but how do you take this common knowledge and turn it into an effective and successful plan? This is exactly what Tom does in "The Body Fat Solution"--he provides you with all the ingredients you need to build your own personalized fat loss program (nutrition and exercise).

    If you are looking for another diet book that gives you another person's diet plan that you have to follow without question, then this isn't the book for you. If you are ready to "fish for yourself" and you're not looking for someone to give you one, then you'll appreciate Tom's clear, no BS, and common sense approach to losing fat and keeping it off....more info
  • No BFFM but not bad.
    If you've read Tom's Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle e-book you won't find much you didn't already know. This book is based more for the person who just wants to be in better shape as opposed to the detail of BFFM. This is a good book but really he covered it all in the E-book so if you want to get really buff I would suggest you buy it instead. Otherwise, you will find what you need here and while it covers a lot, it still is a no BS method. Your results are proportional to your efforts.

    If you want a quick fix book then go elsewhere and I wish you luck....more info

  • This Book Is SOOO Worth It!!!!!
    I am a huge fan of Tom Venuto's BFFM. So when I heard he was writing another book, it was anxiouxly awaited. And, of course, the man did not disappoint!
    One of the great things was that Tom said right up front that this was a book that pretty much breaks it down as to why people overeat, not train, and have trouble losing weight. It was not geared toward the people who used BFFM although as one who has, you STILL could learn from it AND review the things your already knew or thought you knew.
    One thing that struck me was page 45 where he says about people who are in the right mindset use the numbers on the scale as feedback, NOT to beat themselves up. When those people look in the mirror they see what they are going to be. That is the key to it all, how you think. Then you must take action and put it all in practice. And that's the magic of it all. Tom shows you that YOU have the power to do this and have all along! It's all about choice.
    For the person who is running out of hope and is ready to give up and accept being fat and out of shape as "inevitable, genetics, I've tried everything, it's my age, etc etc" DONT!!!! Before you make that decision, pick up this book and give it an honest read.You will not only see changes in your eating and exercise, but you will actually FEEL the changes in yourself. Stay true to course, commit, follow it, and I guarantee you will see your work pay off! Then pat yourself on the back for making the best decision of your life! Now go get it!!!...more info

  • As much an attitude book as it is an Fitness guide
    This is simply a very thoroughly thought out book.
    It really involves a person addressing all the areas of one's life, and surrounding yourself with the proper people and attitudes that will ensure your success on your way to better health.

    Simple concepts, such as the percentage of body fat, are explained, and detailed suggestions are made to improve this ratio.

    The underlying premise of the book is the fact that, if you don't lose weight, in the proper way, with including the proper types of exercise and diet. (lifestyle changes), then your body will canibalize your muscle, instead of the fat that you want to get rid of.

    The book efficiently and quickly moves through the psychology of what holds us back, and provides detailed specific exercise instructions for breaking through plateau's.

    Comparing the contents of this book, to other similar books from around 2002, this book clearly focuses on making sure you have a caloric deficit, and has a focus on weight training, coupled with some high intensity aerobic exercise. The book is presented in a way of a true coach, and not a "ra ra" cheerleader. Very much worth the time.

  • For the BIG PICTURE, not just Diet or Exercise
    This is the guide I wish I had when I began my weight loss journey a decade ago. You'll be hard-pressed to find the "big picture" so well conveyed in one single book. Tom Venuto covers every aspect of successful, permanent fat loss from biology and chemistry to mindset and willpower in a way that is easy to understand and execute.

    If you are experienced and looking for a new diet or exercise program, you'll likely be disappointed. This isn't a "here is what you do" book, but a "here is how to figure out what will work best for you" and "why you want to do it this way."

    I've read a few reviews saying that the information here is nothing new ... I don't disagree, but I found with my own weight loss it was frustrating to figure out how to put it all together. That's what I feel this book does - it takes the information that people may find in bits and pieces, and ties it together into one, comprehensive guide.
