Losing has never felt better than with Jillian Michaels, the female fitness guru on Network Nine's hit show The Biggest Loser, who presents a unique and comprehensive health and fitness program that will keep the pounds off for good.
Jillian Michaels knows a thing or two about getting people to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. In her new book, Winning by Losing, Jillian offers a comprehensive and integrated program that provides readers with a clearĘCcut path to total health. Unlike other popular diet books, Winning by Losing works from the inside out, combining a behavioral makeover with a unique diet plan and a noĘCgimmick workout.
The book is divided into three parts: "Self," "Science," and "Sweat." "Self" focuses on behavior patterns, and shows how unchecked urges and emotional roadblocks lead to unhealthy eating habits. Jillian will help readers address and overcome these issues completely, an accomplishment that is the first and most crucial step towards leading a healthier lifestyle. "Science" is the book's nutritional facet, in which Jillian teaches readers how to create their own personalized diets. This section will help readers identify their own unique biochemical and metabolic needs, arming them with the knowledge they need to formulate a diet plan far more effective than generic ones offered in other books. "Sweat" utilizes Jillian's expertise to give readers an integrated workout program that combines the most effective elements of different training styles. It doesn't promise to be easy ĘC but it works and lasts.
While there are several recognizable men at the top of the fitness guru chain, including Bill Phillips and Jorge Cruise, this category has yet to see a new female occupy the spotlight. Jillian Michaels is attractive, knowledgeable, and dynamic, and is the perfect candidate to be the next big thing in fitness/health books.
Jillian is the Bomb I purchased her book and DVD's I recently just started about a week ago and I have already lost 5 pounds. She tells it like it is and that is what I needed someone who has been there where I am now. I totally recommened her products because they work and will continue to work as long as you beleive in yourself
Exactly as described! This item arrived promptly as promised - the book was new as described. I have never had a problem purchasing from Amazon or it's contibutors. Great book - my daughter loves it! ...more info
motivational, great way to start a diet I really have to rave about this book. It is very motivational. It has really helped me jump start me into dieting. I have boughten several weightloss books and I very rarely read those books from cover to cover.. this is one book I did read cover to cover.. Its worth the reading and the weightloss....more info
No more of this "exercise comfortably" nonsense... Overview: the self (behavior, pysch) stuff is excellent, the workout stuff is beyond excellent, the diet stuff is meh.
Jillian's workouts are brutal and effective. They just are. And, really, the only effective workouts are brutal, so suck it up: you want to get lean, right? Rather than prescribing the usual "3 days cardio, 2 days strength" stuff, she has you doing four days of circuit, one day of cardio (keeping your heart rate at 85% of max for 50 minutes!) "to rest your muscles,"(ha) and two days of nuthin. The circuit, for those of you who aren't familiar, is what you see those poor Biggest Loser contestants doing on TV when they're redfaced and sweating heavily: it's a way of getting your heart rate WAY up there by doing, for example, 15 pushups then 15 squats then 15 pushups then 15 squats then 15 pushups then 15 squats NEXT CIRCUIT QUIT WHINING 15 tricep dips 15 crunches etc etc. A circuit is typically made up of an upper body exercise and a lower body one: J says doing this causes your heart rate to shoot up because you're pushing the blood to the upper body, then the lower, over and over again. You do each circuit 3 times without resting, then move to the next one.
So it's brutal, like I said. But it makes you strong and lean. And it makes you feel like you can do anything.
The "self" section is also effective. Figuring out why we do what we do (mindlessly snack, overeat) is an important tool in changing our behavior. So is the positive thinking stuff, something that doesn't come naturally to this reviewer.
Why the four stars? After all the explanation of how many calories you should be taking in daily and what your metabolic "type" is, there is very little guidance on how to put a meal together. Okay, I should be eating 40% carbs, 30% fat and 30% protein. Now how do I do that? Do I eat a bunch of veggies and an egg or two? You can always refer to "the Zone" books for advice on this if you're a balanced oxidizer because that's the dietary model followed (40/30/30). But apart from a few recipes (many using fake stuff like Splenda, sweetened whey powder, etc.), you're on your own. ...more info
Great workout section! I only used this book for the exercise portion, so I can't comment on the diet portion. But this book is well worth the price for the workouts alone! Once I really followed the workouts schedule as prescribed, I dropped a size in about 6 weeks after a really long plateau.
I disagree with the posters who complain this is too basic, or there is nothing new to learn. The exercises may not be complicated, but that does not mean they are not effective. I had spent over 2 years with a trainer doing weight workouts, but this workout on my own helped me drop another size after I stopped working out with him.
The magic is in the way she composes the workouts. The workouts are amazingly effective if followed the way she lays them out. The combination of lifting with short bursts of cardio really firms up your muscles while burning fat. This type of workout produces more of a leaner/sculpted look, it's not intended for building mass or bulk.
Winning by Losing Jillian Michaels has a wonderful way of telling it like it is! Read this book and understand that it is not a quick fix. You must work for it and want it. I enjoyed the whole book. Now I have to but the book into action. Thanks Jullian, we all need the honest truth about diet and exercising....more info

Jillian Tells it like it is One of the Biggest Loser Coaches debuts with her own novel. In this book Jillian gives you the basics about loosing weight and she doesn't lie to you like other authors of dieting books do. She gives you the facts. She tells you how to loose weight without going through extreme measures - such as surgery and dieting pills. I finished this book in two weeks and it was a great read. I learned a lot. One thing I enjoyed about this book is that Jillian teaches you how to read nutrition labels on the back of food packages. She also teaches you how to take the first steps to your life change. Since reading this book and exercising regularly I've lost a total of eleven pounds in six weeks. It Really Works! You must be the one to make the change and you cannot give up if you didn't loose as much weight one week than you did the week before. When you do start this plan keep it in mind all of the time. I created my own weight loss chart from the example in the book and I keep it on my refrigerator. Good luck!! ...more info
Understanding how to lose weight properly I really liked the book. It teaches you how to read food labels and understand them. It also teaches you what you need to do in order to lose the weight and eat propely. It works with your body style once you figure out what it is suppose to be and how it will work for you personally. Also makes you aware of what you are eating and how it effects you. I enjoyed the book and some things I need to go over more than once to understand but once you do that it becomes easier....more info
Comprehensive Weight Loss The great thing about this book is that it addresses weight loss from many different angles. It starts with the emotional issues involved. Jillian seems to be able to cut through everything and get to the root of why you became overweight. I've read a lot about weight loss, but this is the first book that seems to touch on everything I needed....more info
Great book! First off I'm a big fan of Jillian Michaels. I love her on the Biggest Loser, and find her "tough love' style incredibly motivating. This book is just great. It cuts through all of the BS of fad diets, and does a great job of helping you determine exactly how and what you should be eating for great results. She combines science in her method which helps the reader to completely understand his/her body, and what, why, and how someone gains/loses weight. I'm a student pursuing a degree in Dietetics and kinesiology, and this book reinforces what I'm learning throughout my education. I've had a weight problem my whole life, and recently ( 2 years ago) have lost and maintained a loss of 65 pounds. I am battling those last 10 pounds, and I feel that this book will really help me get to my ultimate goal. Whether you have 200 or 20 pounds to lose, this book, with its startling facts and figures, will help you reach your goal!...more info
No more... "I don't know where to start". Now you do! This is by far the best informational upright health and fitness book I've read so far, and I've read a lot. Jillian is right there talking to you, strait and to the point. No fooling around. Problems and solutions. She explains things so simply. You either do or don't. It's really like she's talking directly to you. So easy and user friendly. She really knows her stuff. First health & nutrition, what works what doesn't. Then exercise and exactly how to do each and every one (with pictures) whether at home or when you get to the gym, so you look like you know what you're doing. I highly recommend this book and Jillian for the novice and for those who have drifted way away (me) and want to get their body back. Thanks Jillian. Wish you were my personal trainer!...more info
Good fitness book but not weight loss book I don't think this book is titled correctly. I found it to be a good intro to fitness but I don't think it addresses weight control.
All diets work - short term. Unfortunately emotions are the reason why 95% of people can't sustain weight loss. Dr. Maxwell Maltz and Dr. Norton L. Williams found the only way to sustain weight loss is to change your habits...one at a time (also see Robert Mikkelsen's book The Story of Big Belly Bob). Funny how this research gets brushed under the carpet.
Below is some additional info:
Dr. Norton L. Williams, psychiatrist, said recently that modern man's anxiety and insecurity stemmed from a lack of "self-realization," and that inner security can only be found "in finding in oneself an individuality, uniqueness and distinctiveness. Our currently held beliefs, whether good or bad, true or false, were formed without effort, with no sense of strain, and without the exercise of "will power." Our habits, whether good or bad. were formed in the same way. It follows that we must employ the same process in forming new beliefs, or new habits, that is, in a relaxed condition. It has been amply demonstrated that attempting to use effort or will power to cure bad habits has an adverse rather than a beneficial effect.
Emile Coue` The little French pharmacist who astonished the world around 1920 with the results he obtained with "the power of suggestion," insisted that effort was the one big reason most people failed to utilize their inner powers. "Your suggestions (ideal goals) must be made without effort if they are to be effective," he said. Another famous Coue` saying was his "Law of Reversed Effort": "When the will and the imagination are in conflict, the imagination invariably will win."
Carbs? I could not find too many carbs.... but if you can deal without some carbs, go for it....more info
Good Book I have a BS in health and fitness and am always looking for good material. I think those of us in health and fitness can always learn from each other even if we don't always agree.
I really like this book beacause it was easy to understand and it gets to the point. It is a good guide for people who need some good solid information about how to change their lives....more info
Great Book Great, straight forward book. I am following her diet based on the theory of whether you are a balanced, fast or slow oxidzer and I think she is on to something...I have lost weight, feel better and feel fuller longer following her suggestions. I also liked that workout section of the book because she included pictures and advanced moves for some the exercises. Would totally recommend....more info

growing old but staying young This book will help you understand the numbers game. I took this book to my personal trainer for questions and answers and she was not quick to give it back because she liked it so well. Jillian is tough but to the point and I like that. If you are ready to believe loosing weight is a numbers game, you want to eat good dietary food, and you know you have to exercise to loose weight and begin a different life style, purchase this book. Because frankly after all these years there are just not gimmicks, just facts....more info
Simple, pragmatic, without the bull Jillian Michael's book is simple, pragmatic, easy to follow, and most importantly, realistic.
I've been overweight or obese from the time I was eight onward. I am now twenty and will soon face health problems as a result. I've given up on virtually every program, and had failed at a recent stint with Weight Watchers, so I was almost content with embracing my size and accepting myself, even if others treated me differently as a result. I saw Jillian's book over the internet and figured that I might as well give it a try to kick off the new semester at my college.
I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised! Over an eight week period of following her program, not always perfectly, I've lost a total of 15 lb and have significantly increased my muscle mass. I feel much stronger and it is very easy to walk. I also feel more satisfied at meals. Granted, I still have about 30 lb to go before I reach a healthy weight range, and I'm sure I'll deal with a plateau, but the first results are definitely inspiring!
If nothing else, Jillian's book has taught me that weight loss is possible for just about anyone. It's all rooted in an equation. There's no celebrity muck, 'get slim quick,' or 'look like a superstar' crap. That's another reason that I love this book.
I think the simplicity of it all is the best part. The author provides you with a simple equation to calculate the calories you need per day, and adding this to your activity levels, you can easily find out what you need to eat to lose a certain amount of weight each week. Plus, you can vary your intake depending on how you feel, as long as you stay under that caloric marker.
The info about macronutrient ratios was also very helpful. I have never,e ver felt satisfied on a diet of high carbohydrates. I felt weak and tired, leading me to believe that losing weight was impossible. But after testing as a balanced oxidizer in her book, I realized that I can eat a variety of food in proportions that are satisfying and still manage to lose weight without feeling tired or groggy.
Jillian's exercise portion, I'll admit, is pretty tough. But my muscles soon became accomodated and I was able to build up weight quickly. It's worth it because the program will really accelerate the changes in your body. In eight weeks (the first three I didn't even incorporate the exercises!) I graduated squats with 25 lb. dumbells and a leg press with over 150 lbs, which isn't bad considering that I'm a short female with no natural propensity toward fitness. I credit the fast improvements to her program.
The best part about her program is that nearly anyone can do it. You probably need access to a gym, so I wish she'd provide more home exercises, but other than that, I have no criticisms. She doesn't overload you with too much information, either, so it's not difficult to get started. Plus, she doesn't entice you to bogus nutritional supplements, like the Body for Life Program has done. In short, 5 stars!...more info
A MUST BUY! This book is fantastic! It is divided into 3 categories, Self, Science, and Sweat.
In Self, she teaches you how to build a support groups and revamp your negative self image and filter out those individuals in your life that are harmful to your health.
In Science, she teaches you how to calculate your BMR and AMR so that you can create a weekly caloric regiment specifically gear towards your bodies unique. She also helps you to determine what type of oxiderizer you are (slow, balanced, or fast) so that you can determine the ratio of carbs, proteins, and fats your body needs. Then she gives you a list of foods that are optimal for your body type and weight loss goals.
In Sweat she gives a detailed 12 week fitness workout along with an index of specific workouts and with alterations for various fitness levels.
I bought this book a month ago, and so far, I have lost 8 lbs (2 pounds a week). This book restored my faith in myself and my ability to lose the weight and keep it off.
She also gives tips on how to measure foods with your hands to maintain proper portion control.
Love it! I've really learned a lot from this book and it really motivates me! I will probably reread it because I want to stay on top of my weight loss until I reach my goal! ...more info
Very informational and... ...motivational. I love how Jillian breaks weight loss down to 3 sections and initially starts with the area most needed-- which is why we are having problems with our weight in the first place. I did not even know who Jillian was until this year when a coworker started watching The Biggest Loser and I was forced to watch along with her. However, I soon got hooked on the show and it wasn't long after that I realized this lady knew her stuff!
Her 3 pronged approach to weight loss, health and fitness is basic, yet well written and thought out and very easy to understand and follow. ...more info

Good book with no B.S. I had never watched an episode of "The Biggest Loser" prior to reading this book, but my friends had told me how great the show is and how great Jillian was at motivating the contestants. Then, another of my friends bought the book. I flipped through it and had to get my own copy. The circuit workouts in the book are top notch. I am a professional athlete and have a background in physical education, and these are the best circuits I have ever done. Her advice on nutrition and exercise should be followed by every American....more info

She's the best Jillian Michaels is a breath of fresh air in the world of fitness. As so many build gyms and develop new machines and distribute more pills, Jillian gets down to the basics that work. No pie in the sky, no gaining muscle while you take a nap claims, she goes to the heart of the matter. If you want to be fit and you want to stay fit, start working and start changing.
I have read many of her outputs and this is one more in a long line of valuable documents with her name on it. I recommend this book and anything else she writes....more info
Great Guide for Health and Wellness This book is fantastic. Jillian talks about diet and metabolism, and explains the scientific reasoning behind her ideas. But, what I love the best is the section on exercise. She explains why circuit training burns more fat and why certain muscle groups should be worked together and in what order. I find myself repeatedly refering back to that section when I plan out my work out routines. There is a fantastic guide to exercises for each muscle group, with photos to illustrate and very clear instructions. I'm so glad I bought this book....more info
It's been done before If you've never read a health and fitness book before, this would be just as good as many out there because it gives you all of the basics. But if you are looking for new information, don't waste your money. Everything in this book has been written by others before....more info
Wow!! So very informative and MoTiVaTIOnAL! With in the first chapter, I quickly grabbed a highlighter and began highlighting ALL of the great information Jillian provides. I really thought I was pretty savvy on "burning calories, etc" but I quickly learned that I was NOT! Jillian is so very knowledgable and she provides the information in a very basic, down to earth way. Now as far as the motiviation.... WOW! She's just as amazing in the motivation department as she is on the Biggest Loser! I feel like she's right there talking to me- motivating me!
You MUST read this book- it's SO motivational and life changing! It's definentely not a "Fad Diet" or a "Strictly Exercise" book. It's so informative and motivating!
