Conquer insulin resistance. Reduce cravings. Eat your favorite foods. And lose weight!
If you have tried every diet and are still struggling with your weight, the real culprit may be insulin resistance. When you have more glucose than your body needs, your body responds by producing more insulin to stabilize your blood sugar level and store the excess glucose as fat. In The Insulin-Resistance Diet, Cheryle R. Hart and Mary Kay Grossman show you how to control insulin resistance and lose weight without sacrificing all of your favorite foods.
Overcome insulin resistance and lose weight with:
- The exclusive Link-and-Balance Eating Method, which balances carbs with the right amount of protein at the right time for maximum weight loss
- Self-tests to determine your insulin resistance and check your progress with linking and balancing
- Real-world strategies for eating at home and out on the town
- Easy-to-make, tasty recipes and livable meal plans
- Similar to The Zone and South Beach, but SOOO MUCH better
I gave this plan more than a week before writing a review. I, like many others, have tried tons of diets. But I can only stay on them for 1-7 days before I start feeling sick, shaky and STARVING. Hunger was not even the biggest issue, it was the terrible migraines and the shakiness that would make me fail. It seems strange to suffer from hypoglycemia and have the high end of normal, fasting blood sugar.
So after giving the link and balance method a try, I found that after one day there was no shakiness and the headaches were at a minimum. Both were kept in line by eating every 2-3 hours, which was actually easier to do then I thought. I found I was not famished when my next eating time came up and often I would go 4-5 hours without needing a snack or meal, even though I was full on much smaller meals than before.
The good thing is if you are still hungry you can have protein (lower fat is suggested)like milk, cheese, chicken, small amount of nuts and much more. But I have found I am so satisfied I rarely bother. You can also have non-starch veggies and some fruits without linking them also. I actually started looking forward to grapefruit- go figure.
So what you are actually doing on this "diet" is linking high carb foods, such as bread, to protein. It is a 2-1 ratio and no more than 30 grams of high carb foods in a 2 hour period. Dairy carbs, some fruits and non-starchy veggie carbs are not counted- sweet. It is easy to do because carbs are not insanely reduced and another satisfying meal or snack is only 2 hours away (if you want). Moderate fat is suggested, but the author wants you to get your fat from canola, olive, omega 3 and other good fats. This really helps with taste and satisfaction.
After a week I have found many of my cravings have gone away, there has been no hypoglycemic episodes and there were headaches only the first day. I am no longer controlled by my hunger, I do not constantly think about food and my blood sugar is not bouncing around. Even if I don't lose weight- I am waiting two full weeks to weigh- I can't imagine going back to eating like I did before. I was eating so much and still getting horrible cravings and uncontrollable hunger AND gaining weight. This is so easy to do and I feel much better. I wish I had tried this years ago, it would have saved me alot of misery and I probably would not be carrying around an extra 25 pounds. I will update this review from time to time....more info
- POS Sufferers need to follow this book
I read and followed this book and in a matter of less than 2 months my triglycerides went from 252 to 123!!! For those of you who don't know what that means....It's REALLY good!! Your Cholesterol can be fine but you can still have high triglycerides and that means trouble, it basically means you have too much fat in your blood. I maybe lost 16 pounds within a month's time but those numbers were what impressed me most. It is a sensible and easy concept to follow, nothing radical here just common sense and eating the right things the right way. They make it easy to understand so it was an easy read and it got right to the point. I particularly liked how they used real people cenarios to kind of get you to feel like "that's me", I really liked this book....more info
- Easy to Read, Easy to Follow
While it will probably get swept under the rug as just another fad, "The Insulin-Resistance Diet--Revised and Updated" is actually really well written. Within the first 30 pages, they've explained the what and why, and are already offering suggestions on how to improve your diet. As I checked this out from the library, I wasn't able to try any of the recipes, but the image of the seesaw to balance carbs with protein stuck with me - I see it in my mind's eye every time I sit down to eat. The premise is simple and very easy to incorporate into any eating habits - no matter how on-the-go....more info
- wonderful transaction!

This is the first book I read after my doctor told me I am insulin resistant. The diet is easy to follow. My carb cravings are gone and I can finally control my eating. In fact, it's not hard to eat less. And I'm starting to loose weight....more info
- What a life saver!
My weight kept climbing and I got sicker and sicker. I was having tremors, was unable to walk, dizzy, my hair was falling out and a whole host of other symptoms. For almost 8 years I stayed this sick with no doctor being able to tell me what was wrong. Then they took a look at my sugar level and it was high BUT my body was producing lots of insulin, I was just not using it! I had an answer but no doctor could yet tell me how to get the weight off. No matter what I ate or did not eat-I gained. Then about 5 months ago I read this book and followed it pretty closely. Well within two weeks the weight really started coming off and I have lost almost 50 pounds now! I have energy, my hair is not falling out, my headaches are gone, my joint pain is gone, my tremors are almost gone, it is amazing! I highly recommend giving this a try. The food is wonderful and the plan is so easy to follow and actually live on everyday. This truly saved my life. Plus my family can enjoy this food also with just a few extra things added for them. Good health to all.
- Easy to understand and follow.
The Insulin Resistance Diet is very easy to read, understand, and follow. After getting the book I began reading first and then my "official" start date was June 1st, 2008. According to my doctor's scale, I lost 4 lbs in the exactly two weeks between my last visits. That's about 2 lbs. per weeks, which is a good rate according to my doctor. I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, insulin resistance, as well as a family history of diabetes. I wanted to break the cycle of high and low blood sugar level spikes before my pancreas is used up!
Once you understand how your body reacts when you consume different types of food, and learn to recognize the different types, it is easier to eat out at restaurants, parties, and at home. The biggest changes for me is just finally feeling better, as well as recognizing true hunger signs for the first time that I can remember. I eat every 2-3 hours, always combine protein with any carbs... I will feel hungry 2-3 hours after eating, but not the extremes that I would feel before. I can even prepare meals and have started my whole family on the same healthy foods that I eat.. no more preparing two separate meals.. besides, I do not want my sons to get diabetes either.
Try this... for the $15-16.. how much better you will feel is worth the price. ...more info
- With diabetes nearing epidemic status
This book is practically a must for all adults, especially those with a family history of diabetes. It not only explains how and where most of us go wrong with our eating habits, it also explains why their recommendations for changes to our eating habits can and usually will work.
I already have Type 2 diabetes but parts of that book are also directed at me. My wife is pre-diabetic and has already been helped by some of the diet-change recommendations. She has lost six pounds and has lowered her average glucose level readings by 10-20 mg/dl simply by following their protein : carbohydrate formula(s)....more info
- Life Saver
I feel this book will save my life, having had PCOS since the birth of my daughter over 21 yrs ago but not diagnosed until 3 yrs ago, I finally found the book that gave me all the information I needed. It answered questions I have had for years and explained everything in a way that I can understand. I cant wait to try the menus and look forward to feeling better soon.I have tried extremely low fat diets but it became boring and soon was on my way back to my old eating habits, either no food at all or ice cream and cereals. The plan and information in this book lets me eat balanced meals and pretty much as much as you want untill your satisfied without gaining weight. Thank you ...more info
- Great book for those who want to feel good
I have PTSD and suffer from depression. At the advice of my therapist I started eating a more balanced diet but I wasn't sure what she meant when she said I need to balance my carbs with protein to have more energy and to regulate my moods. So I started researching it and came across this book. I suspect I am hypoglycemic because of the way my body reacts to sugar and carbs. My mood swings were unbelievable.
This book gives some great guidelines on how to combine foods to not only regulate my blood sugar to help my mood swings and give me more energy but I'm also losing weight as well. Thats just a bonus as I didn't do this to lose weight.
So buy this book. It's worth it. I feel great as long as I follow ALL the guidelines but as soon as I fall off the wagon I can sure tell it. I get cranky, tired, irritable, angry...it's amazing how what you eat and how you eat it can affect your moods.
Love it!!!...more info

- Simple, simple, simple
I am very impressed with this book and the eating plan it describes. The IR Plan is the basis of my eating plan, although I also count calories as this helps keep me honest! Many diet books are poorly written and boring. You have to dig through a lot of filler to get to the jist of the plan. This book is well written and presents its ideas in a very simple way with simple graphics that stick in your mind and help you picture what you're doing. It is pleasant to read which is good as you need to read it often to stay motivated sometimes. I do best when I avoid simple carbs. This book encourages balancing protein with complex carbs but you can actually eat simple carbs as long as you limit quantity and have protein with them. It is low carb but sane. I have lost weight using this eating plan....more info
- Finally, something that makes sense!
I bought this book a few days ago and have read it about three times already! I have suffered from hypoglycemia all my life. I'm not terribly overweight, about 20 pounds maybe. I've tried low-fat high carbohydrate, low carb diets, the South Beach Diet. This is such an EASY way to eat! I have not had one hypoglycemic incident since I started eating this way, and I usually have one a day at least. I have known for a long time (through many years of trial and error), that I have to eat anything with sugar with a meal or it triggers a hypoglycemic episode. Well, this book tells me exactly what ratio or carbohydrates to protein I should eat to keep this from happening! Just the thought that I can have whatever I want, as long as I keep the carbohydrate grams and protein grams balanced, is wonderful! Also, I am one of those who always ate in defense mode. I was terrified of being caught somewhere without food and having a hypoglycemic attack, so I would eat before going somewhere, even if I wasn't hungry. Now, I know that won't happen anymore, and I am finally free from worrying about food all the time. I can't say enough good things about this approach. Obviously I haven't lost any weight in only three days, at least not that I can tell, but I feel so much better already. That alone made it worth buying the book.
I've been using this book now for a couple of months and I can't believe how many inches I've lost in my stomach! I am wearing clothes that were way too tight just a few month ago! I've only had one episode of hypoglycemia and I have had absolutely NO CRAVINGS since I started eating this way. I no longer crave coffee, alcohol, or carbohydrates. I am eating plenty of carbohydrates though, but more protein along with them, and eating a lot more dairy! I have a lot more energy and feel better. I've started a walking exercise program and have toned up also! Definitely not a fad diet book, this is a good sensible, doable approach. I eat whatever I want, but I balance it. However, I have noticed that since I started eating this way, I choose healthy foods almost all the time now, because it makes me feel so much better. I hardly ever eat junk food anymore, and if I do, the portion is much much smaller and I always balance it.
This has now become my way of life, and I don't consider myself on a diet at all, which is why it has been so easy.
Definitely worth the money for this book!...more info

I just bought this book and received it in the mail a few days ago! I've read the 1st 3 chapters and it is really easy to understand! - finally -useful information about insulin resistance
being a diabetic--i am always on the lookout for new information. i am a nurse. i understand all the medical terminology. i understand the disease process. after reading this book--i learned more about insulin resistance than i ever did in nursing school. but i wanted a reference book that was simple-easy to read. i was looking for information in a condensed form that could give me some easy guidelines that did not involve in depth calculations. this book fit the bill for me. it simplifies what one has to do if they have diabetes or/and insulin resistance. it is so much easier planning meals using the protein to carb ratio method. i find i don't have those hyperglycemic surges following meals if i follow this. i recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a lot of info which is straightforward and easy to follow. ...more info
- Don't waste your time
This book is full of incorrect diet advice. There were several points that the authors tried to make that do not coincide with actual proven science. In the book the authors claim that fat is not filling. But later claims that you need small amounts for good health. It seems they can't get the information correct. It also claims that eating your carbs with protein is a good for lowering insulin response and losing weight. This to me seems reminiscent of The Zone (a much better book) of eating carbs, protein and fat in balance and limiting all three. My advice is to skip this book with its bad and sometimes blatantly incorrect 'science' and read The Zone or any book by Jack Challem. I have followed these diets and lost not only weight but aches and pains and allergies and gained better mental acuity as well as reversing my insulin resistant state....more info

- Finally success
I have stuggled most of my adult life with my weight. I have tried everything from Adkins to the Zone and everything in between. I used to cry at weight watcher's meetings because everyone else would lose 2 pounds and I would lose 1/4 pound. I have finally found something that is really working. I have been following the plan since Jan 5, 2009 and I am proud to say that I have lost 8 pounds. This more weight than expected to lose and it feels great. I will not lie the first 3 days of this plan are really rough. I had a migraine and felt like crap, but it was like a switch turned on that 3rd day and I started feeling wonderful. It is very easy to follow and it really makes you think about what you are putting into your body. I even had some icecream and did not feel like I was cheating. I would highly recommend it to anyone who has struggled to find something that works on a consistant basis...more info
- It works!
I was called by my doctor after my annual check up that I am in a pre-diabetic stage. I have been dealing with my PCOS for 10 years and have taken my medication but still the insulin resistance had kicked in and there was too much insulin in my blood. If you are searching this book you probably know what that means: big weight gain in short time, extreme sudden fatigues and just feeling that you are not in control.
I read this book and followed the simple advice of coupling carbohydrates and protein. It worked! I don't experience that extreme lack of energy any more, at all! And now I have increased my activity level and cut down on calories, as advised in the book, and the excess pounds are melting down. If you are insulin resistant you know how hard it is to cut down on calories because you don't have control over food and your body reactions to it. This book will give you the tool to gain that control back. I strongly recommend it to anyone with insulin resistance problems. A must have!
- Pretty Good Book
This is a good book. Easy to read and understand. The hard part is changing your eating habits. The book offers no miracles, just straight forward advice and a great method to use when deciding what foods to eat. The good thing is does not deprive you of things that people with PCOS like, like potatoes and bread- we can have those things as long as we balance with protein. The book shows you how. If you have PCOS, this is a great book....more info

- Lost 90 lbs In 1 Year
I have fought the battle of the bulge for 20 years. I have tried all the major diets out there from Adkins to Weight Watchers, and truly with every diet I gain a little more. Weighing in at 279 lbs, and wearing a size 26 at a mere 5'7", I was considering "the operation." That is until my Aunt Mararet turned me on to this book.
I read this very easy to read and understand book as it was my last effort before "the operation" and decided to give it a try. One year later I am 90 lbs lighter, and wear a size 16. I have about 50 lbs to go, but the weight is melting off! This is the easiest thing I have ecer done and has paid-off in ways I never imagined it could.
If you do nothing more than just read this book just for the facts, then you truly will be ahead of the weight-loos game!

- Read it, tried it, went back to the original eating plan
My spouse was diagnosed as having insulin resistance, so I bought and followed this book--it only made things worse!
If you have LOW blood sugar, or way-out-of-control blood sugar, then this just might work for you. If you are already limiting your carbs to veggies and the twice-weekly serving of quinoa or wild rice (grains lowest in carbs/highest in nutrition), all this diet does is RAISE your sugar, A1C, and all the other indicators of insulin resistance, because it introduces more carbs into your diet than you can process.
Hubby went back to eating lean meats, fruits and veggies, and the twice-weekly serving of grains got cut down to 1/week (we cut out the wild rice). This action, plus adding vanadium and cinnamon to his supplements, is doing the trick.
I donated this book to a thrift store.
*WARNING* read labels well before using this product, because you'll find seemingly innocuous foods like salsa can throw your link-and-balance way off--you end up having to add excess protein to offset the carbs in salsa and other foods. I found that I was having to add all sorts of protein amounts to link and balance the carbs in one item, and this can very easily lead to over-eating, excess protein consumption (bad for people with kidney problems), and meat lovers like my spouse will tend to concentrate on the main dish before getting to any of the veggies...and by then, he's full (and full of cholesterol).
People with dairy, wheat/gluten, or other food allergies are cautioned not to follow this diet, as it relies heavily on these food items to count as proteins and acceptable carbs. I couldn't follow this diet if I ever had to because of multiple food allergies.
This diet, as written in this book, also relies heavily on processed or commercially pre-made foods--this is NOT a good thing for anybody, let alone borderline diabetics!...more info
- A great book for those diagnosis with Insulin Resistance
After being diagnosis with Insulin Resistance in conjunction with PSOD. My doctor recommended this book to change the way I eat. This book has been so helpful in this manner. It shows one how to eat better and even includes recipes, meal ideas, and a fast food guide. The fast food guide is a genius idea. As for, being a young women in her 20's, fast food is a way of life and this book shows what can be eaten at a restaurant and still maintain a healthy lifestyle. This book has changed my life and has helped me come off of METFORMIN, a medication used for Insulin Resistance and has steered me clear of Type II diabetes. ...more info

- Easy to follow and it works!
This book provides some simple rules that are easy to follow. It is not a "diet" as much as a way of eating for a healthy lifestyle. You don't go hungry, and you do loose weight. This is not a low carb diet, but it is a reduced carb diet. The authors provide a good explanation as to what causes your body to store fat. The simple rules require that when you eat high carb foods you also eat protein in a 2:1 ratio while never exceeding 30g carbs at a given time. You are allowed a reasonable amount of fat as well. The foods you eat are very similar to the South Beach Diet, but I like this better because of the simple rules about the protein and carb combining, and I don't like to follow menus in a book.
My husband and I have been following this diet for three months and we have both lost about 15 pounds (our goal is 20). I rarely feel deprived, and when I do, I remind myself of the greater rewards of being thin and healthy. I have never stuck with a "diet" for this long in my entire life (and I'm 50). You can have some sweets without resorting to artificial sweeteners (sugar has only 4 grams of carbs per teaspoon).
I gave the book five stars because it has been so easy and successful for both of us. That said, I have not used any of the recipes in the book. A lot of them seem excessively low in fat, in spite of the fact that the authors suggest getting 20-30 percent of your calories from fat. Some of the recipes call for "fat free" cheeses that I can't even find in any stores around here. Most of the dessert recipes use artificial sweeteners, while I have had no trouble inventing my own desserts that use sugar and still meet the requirements of the diet.
The book could definitely use a sexier title (maybe the "Look Good on the Beach Diet" :) ). We initially started the diet because my husband's blood sugar was high, otherwise I never would have discovered this book, and I'm so glad I did....more info
- If you implement this; it will work!
I admit I was skeptical in the beginning, but after being on this "diet" (more like a way of life) I have lost 20 pounds. I am extremely delighted with my progess.
I have PCOS with insulin resistance and most diets don't work, but this has showed me I don't have to be hungry and I don't have to cut all my carbs.
I have noticed my cravings are almost completely non-exsistant. I used to have to have a snack at night, but now, after dinner I'm good to go.
I think the book is written extremely well and can be applied to any lifestyle. It even has a list for fast food restaurants for the people that can't avoid being on the go.
If you are struggling to lose weight because of insulin resistance; get this book. If you implement the methods you will most certainly lose weight....more info
- Life Changing Book....
Are you feeling tired, sluggish, and in desperate need to lose weight and be healthy? If so, this if the book for you. At the advise of my OB/GYN I ordered this book and began following it on February 17, 2005 by June 17, 2005 I had lost 46 pounds and a whopping 13% bodyfat. I went from a size 18 to a size 8. A year later I am still following the plan because it was so easy to make it part of my life. I am off all cholesterol lowering medication, my blood pressure is perfect, and I feel wonderful. I have ordered this book several times because I give mine away when people ask me how I lost the weight. I love this book so much because after 4 years of trying to get the 100 pounds of weight off from having a child nothing seemed to work until I found The Insulin-Resistance Diet. My life is forever changed thanks to reading this book. I hope you find all the same joy I have found through this diet....more info
- Not as advertised
This book claims to make loosing weight easy because you don't have to count calories or fats.
True, but you do have to count carbohydrates and proteins.
It says you can loose weight and eat foods you like.
True, but only in "the appropriate amounts" which means 30 grams of carbohydrate, or less and you must eat 14 grams of protein with it.
Almost every claim made has "fine print" associated with it but that alone isn't really unusual for a diet book. Worst is that there is medical and nutritional misinformation in this book which is written by a registered Dietitian and a Medical Doctor! I faxed them a question (after calling to confirm the fax number) but received no reply. Example: page 80 says that ketones are produced when your body used proteins for energy. Not true, ketones are produced when you body incompletely metabolizes fat for energy.
Finally, this book does not really give a guide of what to eat when. Most diabetic exchange diets are structured to include the right ratio of carbohydrate to protein to begin with and at least give a plan to the persons following them. This book leaves the reader hanging. As long as they eat 30 grams of carbohydrates and 14 grams of protein every two hours there is no further guidance.
- This Book Changed My Life
Do you ever say this? "I'm just not enjoying myself enough to weigh this much!" If so, you probably know that there's some secret somewhere that explains why you keep gaining weight.
The authors of "The Insulin Resistance Diet" have found that secret and share it with the world. If you suffer from insulin resistance, then you know how frustrating it is to always be hungry, to always deny yourself, to exercise faithfully, and yet to see the scale creep up and up and up.
Plenty of doctors recognize that insulin resistance is a problem that causes people to gain weight beyond the "calorie balance theory." But Dr. Cheryle Hart and registered dietician Mary Kay Grossman have developed a solution for this problem. Even better, their solution is easy to follow, not just today, but for a lifetime.
On a personal note, I'm over fifty and have seen my weight go up and down all my life. Ever since a horseback riding accident twelve years ago, I have been completely unable to lose weight. I believe I must have become inuslin resistant at that time.
I am so happy to have found this book. After eight weeks on this program, I've lost twelve pounds. Just as wonderful, I'm experiencing normal hunger instead of constant cravings. My moods are improved, my skin is clearer and my hair is thicker. I've been looking for the secret to weight loss all my life, and I finally found it in this book.
One interesting note: Dr. Hart, both in person and in this book, says that insulin resistance causes weight gain around the waist. I, on the other hand, carry most of my weight below the waist. The first place I lost inches was around my hips and thighs. In other words, "The Insulin Resistance Diet" works even better than they thought it would!
So if you are looking for the secret reason that you keep gaining weight, try this book. It will answer the questions you've been asking your entire life.

- logical & easy to understand
I was diagnosed with PCOS and Insulin Resistance a little over a year ago, and this is the first book I've read that seemed to be based on common sense.
This gives you a pretty simple formula for balancing carbs with protein every time you eat. The authors use a simple graphic system (squares and circles) that make their linking theory very easy to understand, especially if you're a visual person like me. The eating plan is not hard to follow, and after only a few days I can tell a difference in how I'm feeling-- my blood sugar levels aren't crazy and leaving me shaking. For example, I didn't realize that eating a meatless pasta meal affected me so much... but after I tried "linking" that meal with some protein, I could tell a major difference in how I felt. So easy, and such a difference!
I was relieved to find that the recipes included are things that I would normally eat-- even enchiladas!-- and they're not made with specialty ingredients that I have to buy at a health food store. These are everyday foods that your whole family can enjoy.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for simple ways to understand and live with PCOS/IR.
This book is easy to follow. I feel that even in a bind where healthy food is scarce I can still link and balance not feel like I need a nap after eating. It's about how you eat. I make really good food choices but for people who have trouble I would say just link and balance your food for a while and then start adding in the healthy choices. This book just makes sense....more info

I felt that author spent too much time telling you how wonderful she and her associate are. I got tired of reading her patient studies and how she did miraculous work with them. I guess you were supposed to want to jump up and run and sign up to go through her program after you finished reading the book....more info

This is THE best eating plan no one has ever heard of!!!
I've been on this plan for about 3 years now and hope to continue for the rest of my life.
WARNING: The weight comes off SLOWLY. For me I lost 3-4 pounds the first week then 1 pound every 1-3 weeks after that until I finally reached my goal weight. But ... I never felt hungry and never felt like I was dieting. It was incredibly easy!!!
It changed my life and rid me of my obsession with food. I stopped craving carbs and binging, which I had done for years. I now feel "normal" around food instead of full of anxiety....more info
