At thirty-five, after eating too much of the Standard American Diet (SAD, isn*t it?), Dr. La Puma had become SADly paunchy. So he decided to research the science of nutrition while also going to culinary school to learn to cook. He created the revolutionary new concept of ※culinary medicine§每recipes, foods, and meals that prevent or control common health conditions without sacrificing restaurant-quality taste.

Now you can use culinary medicine too. In ChefMD*s Big Book of Culinary Medicine, you*ll learn to stock the medicine chest in your kitchen, use the doctor inside of you, and create dishes that give you lifesaving benefits and truly dazzling flavor.

Dr. La Puma serves up a step-by-step eight-week plan to motivate you and help you change your life. Try Saffron Scallop, Shrimp, and Chickpea Paella. Or Sicilian Pasta with Swiss Chard, Goat Cheese, and Basil. Or Spicy and Rich Sausage and Kidney Bean Chili.

  • Great take on ancient science
Thanks for bringing this topic into mainstream western medicine ~ most of what I learned about nutrition over the last 30+ years can be attributed to studying cultures who base their diet on their own medical systems, such as Indian cooking, based on Ayurvedic medicine. Books I read in the seventies and cooks I worked alongside of, knew the usefulness of each ingredient. It is truly amazing what we can do when we 'let food be our medicine'. I look very much forward to reading your book (will give it five stars for the idea alone), and having a blog to continue this evolving discussion is brilliant ~ see you there!...more info
  • ChefMD Big Book
I like this book very much. It's readable - not bogged down with a lot of boring information that I wouldn't be interested in anyway.
Over the past 3 months I have lost 21 lbs. and I feel confident that 20 more will come off over the next couple of months. How? I removed ALL high fructose corn syrup from my diet and buy organic whenever possible. I have also found the recipes in the book to be very helpful....more info

Excellent cookbook for preparing organic meals. We eat way too much processed foods, that our bodies store as toxic fat.The fresh fruits and vegetables are loaded with cancer fighting compounds and good health restoring ingredients. Our tastebuds change over time.I loved fastfood, yet hated snacking on veggies.I learned to love the various vegetables, after seeing the results of sticking to an organic diet. You are what you consume. The processed fats, starches and sugars will do more harm than good for you, over the long run. This book has so many worthy all-natural recipes, for the prevention of disease, diabetes, heart troubles and fatigue. The book opens new avenues of insight into alternative ways of getting the most nutrition for your body's top fitness. ...more info
  • Not a Recipe Book
I misunderstood what this book was when I purchased it. I thought it was a recipe book with lots of healthy recipes for different concerns. This book is more about a way of eating. If that's what you're interested in, then I think it's a good book....more info
  • funny and informative
This book has completely changed how I choose food--and I thought I already knew a lot about healthy eating. Now I know how to maximize nutrition even in the foods I already eat (like melon and broccoli) by how I cook and store them. I have seen a real difference in my nails and hair, and my eye doctor recently told me, after examining my eyes, "Whatever you're doing, keep doing it."

I love watching La Puma on his website--he's funny and gives great advice. And his book is funny and well written. Highly recommended....more info
  • Chef MD review
I am still in the process of reading this book. It is really great. I gives basic nutrition info to get you started. It gives the steps to set up up your kitchen and cupboards that will have you on the right track for eating healthy. It is filled with lots of new recipes giving the break down on nutritional value. I cant wait to finish it and be on my way to feeling healthier....more info
  • ChefMD's Big Book of Culinary Medicine
ChefMD's Big Book of Culinary Medicine is a fabulous book. I have read it and re-read many sections of it. I began his regime for osteoarthritis and have had huge success. I am off painkillers and walking much, much better. I feel like I have experienced a miracle....more info

This was such a heart warming book for any animal lover-or any sensitive person, such as the author obviously is. I recommend it to anyone who needs a jump start to there emotions. I loved it....more info
  • A Recipe Book for my Aunt ...
My aunt from Iron Mountain, MI (who doesn't own a computer or knows how to use one) called me in Fort Worth, TX, to say she wanted this book and could I help her find a store that carried it? As she's talking, I open the Amazon site, find the book and order it before she can take a breath. Isn't technology great? By the way, she loves the book! :-)...more info

  • Not Impressed
The print is too small in this edition, there are no photographs of any of the prepared dishes. It is too wordy and has the appearance and the very similar format of a text book. The content is for the most part good but the presentation is poor in my opinion, obviously the publisher did not do it justice. ...more info
  • Eating for health
Great book. Not boring at all like a lot of health books are written. I thought I knew it all on this subject but I learned so much more. I learned new things not discussed in other books or materials I have read. I will purchase more of these books and give them as gifts. That's how much I enjoyed the book and think this information should be shared with your loved ones. ...more info
  • exotic, interesting
The article I read about this book lead me to expect a more of a reference-type book..."if you have a cold, eat this soup because it contains....", but it's not. The first part is more of the health info I'm reading everywhere, although the author is quite funny, and it's easy to read. (Warning: if you'll be offended by crass humor and extramarital sex references, you'll be offended!) The recipe part is fun. The things we've tried were amazing, but not worth buying the book for. Though my family typically eats well, many of these recipes are a little too exotic to be useful for us on a regular basis. If you have crystallized ginger and agave in your kitchen already, you'll be in good shape. It's not really bad, but it's not what I wanted. I'd recommend checking this out from the library first to see if it's what you really want. ...more info
  • After reading it I sent one to our son, daughter and brother
Just when you think you know alot along comes Chef M.D. and adds valuable info in an easy fun way. This is a terrific book if you want to do easy things to eat for good health. ...more info
