Product Description

Lauren Bacall gets cranky when Barefoot Contessa, an East Hampton specialty food store/institution for more than 20 years, is sold out of Indonesian Ginger Chicken. She can now thank her lucky stars that exuberant owner Ina Garten has written The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook and included this recipe. Ms. Bacall is sure to be pleased to discover how easy it is to achieve such fantastic flavor. Simplicity is something of a bottom line at Barefoot Contessa. "Food is not about impressing people," Ina Garten says. "It's about making them feel comfortable."

Aimed at the cook who intends to entertain, The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook draws on Garten's experience as a caterer, as well as her knowledge of what customers really want to eat when they arrive at her shop. She has culled her favorite recipes and has included timesaving tips, always striving for ease and simplicity. Neither cooking nor entertaining should be a chore, according to Ina Garten, and her lovely cookbook is a case in point.

This is an intensely illustrated cookbook that shows the foods to best advantage (and makes it a lovely gift book). Presentation counts for a great deal, and Garten's food styling adds to any food platter. But just as relevant are photos that bring in the spirit of fresh, locally grown produce. There's the local poultry producer proudly holding a laying hen in case anyone should wonder where the eggs come from.

Starting with appetizers, Ina Garten isn't afraid to include such basics as hummus and guacamole: she knows from experience that her versions make a profound impact. There are French Onion Soup and Corn Cheddar Chowder, Baked Virginia Ham and Salmon with Fennel, Roasted Carrots and Caramelized Butternut Squash--and then one killer dessert after another. Included, too, are some breakfast specialties. Any upscale bed and breakfast could have this book in the kitchen and get rid of all others.

This isn't a cookbook about getting outrageous with food. The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook is about warming the hearts and souls of your guests with familiar food raised to a gourmet level. --Schuyler Ingle

For more than twenty years, Barefoot Contessa, the acclaimed specialty food store, has been cooking and baking extraordinary dishes for enthusiastic customers in the Hamptons. For many of those years, people have tried to get the exuberant owner, Ina Garten, to share the secrets of her store. Finally, the energy and style that make Barefoot Contessa such a special place are shown here, with dozens of recipes and more than 160 breathtaking photographs, in The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook.

Ina's most popular recipes use familiar ingredients, but they taste even better than you would expect. Her Pan-Fried Onion Dip is the real thing, with slowly car-amelized onions and fresh sour cream. Tomato soup is created from oven-roasted tomatoes and fresh basil to intensify the flavors. Meat loaf is as good as your grandmother's, but it's healthier because it's made with ground turkey and fresh herbs. The light and flaky Maple-Oatmeal Scones are baked with rolled oats, whole wheat, and real maple syrup. Now these and other famous Barefoot Contessa recipes can be prepared at home.

Ina says that before she owned a specialty food store she often spent a week making dinner for six friends. Her experience at Barefoot Contessa has given her hundreds of ideas for creating wonderful parties in a few hours. And they're all in this book. Crab Cakes with R¨¦moulade Sauce can be stored overnight in the refrigerator and saut¨¦ed just before the guests arrive. Cheddar Corn Chowder can be made days ahead, reheated, and served with a salad and bread for a delicious autumn lunch. The ingredients for Grilled Salmon Salad can all be prepared ahead and tossed together before serving. The batter for the Raspberry Corn Muffins can be mixed a day before and popped into the oven just before breakfast.

Ina Garten teaches us how to entertain with style, simplicity, and a relaxed sense of fun. There are notes throughout the book for giving cocktail parties, lunches, and dinner parties where everything is done before the guests arrive. And there are easy instructions for creating gorgeous party platters that don't even require you to cook!

With Ina Garten and The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, you have the perfect recipe for hosting parties that are easy and fun for everyone--including the cook.

  • Ina's recipes are money in the bank - guaranteed to impress
Easy, simple, high quality food - this is what all cook books should be like! The bottom line is it tastes phenomenal and impresses your friends and family. These recipes do that - each and every one of them. I really feel like Ina personally and carefully selected each recipe for her book and not here editors or some intern. Good job Ina - Loved the food I made from this book!!! ***** 5 Stars...more info

  • the barefood contessa cookbook
I bought this cookbook for Christmas presents to several of my friends. I have 2 of her other books, which I really like, and I picked it because it was reviewed very favorably. I have to say I was disappointed in it compared to her other books. It doesn't have as manhy wonderful pictures and I didn't like the choice of recipes as well. I haven't looked at it that carefully so maybe my impression is premature....more info
  • Barefoot Contessa Cookbook
I have now made 5 recipes out of this book and each one was delicious and easy. No surprise since Ina Garten ran a successful business for years based on these very recipes, so they've been tested hundreds of times. I'd recommend this book to anyone.

Do take the time to read the preface and intro to each chapter and recipe. They are entertaining and useful....more info
  • The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook
If you know someone who loves to cook, this book is an excellent choice as a gift. I purchased this for my Aunt who is a huge fan of Ina Garten's show "The Barefoot Contessa." She really enjoyed trying out the wide assortment of recipes.

Another reason why I think this book is exceptional, is that it includes pictures of each meal. Most cookbooks do not feature that many illustrations. I think it really helps a cook if they know how the end product is supposed to look once it's finished!...more info
  • great recipe's!!

  • I love ALL the Barefoot Contessa cookbooks!
As a collector of cookbooks, I have discovered very few have more than one or two recipes I actually use all the time. Not so with the Barefoot Contessa books! Her recipes are delicious; but more importantly for me, they are fast and easy while still being special enough for entertaining or family dinners. I use her books all the time and have given "sets" of them to my daughters-in-law as gifts. ...more info
The Barefoot Contessa is one of my favorites. Her cookbooks are easy to read and the ingredients are easy to find in the grocery store. I would highly recommend this book or any of her other cookbooks!...more info
This is my most favorite cookbook --and I own about 80! Everything I have made using it has come out perfectly. All of her recipes are tried and true, coming from her own specialty shop in the Hamptons or from years of experience catering. Even someone new to the kitchen could make things perfectly using this cookbook. What I really love is that she uses fresh ingredients without too much fuss. My husband loves the pan-fried onion dip and her recipes for french onion soup and roast chicken have become my own kitchen staples. I also HIGHLY recommend her "Parties" cookbook which has menus already put together for you. I have used it for the past 2 Thanksgivings with much success --I had never made a whole turkey before, & using her recipe it came out PERFECTLY!! My Dad has requested that I make Thanksgiving dinner every year from now on! :)...more info
  • Contessa at Home
The book offers a colorful photo for each recipe that was very benificial. Although the recipes are easy to make at home, the ingredients may not already be in your home. I made three recipes so far and all were sucessful. The recipes will probably need to be adjusted to your liking after cooking. There are a variety of recipes for everyone to enjoy. I highly recommend the Croissaint Bread Pudding!...more info
  • a classic winner!
Ina Garten has a most wonderful cookbook here for the beginning or the advanced cook. The recipes are easy to follow and sure to give you a successful cooking experience. She really tests the recipes to make your cooking experience great. Thanks, Ina, for a classic that will remain in my family always. ...more info
  • The Barefoot Contessa Inspires Me!
I am not a cook, but Ina Garten somehow reaches and inspires me to cook! I've tried several of her recipes and they were all crowd pleasers. I love the way she puts her cookbooks together - beautiful pictures of the food, clear recipes and entertaining tips, and stories and pictures of the Hamptons (where I also live). This is a great addition to any cookbook collection! ...more info
  • A pearl of a cookbook
I own literally hundreds of cookbooks, and in it's category, I must say this is one of the best I own. Yes, there are the obvious recipes, but with a fantastic twist! On the first month after getting it, I made the scones about five or six times! And the Tomato-basil soup is heavenly.

And I must say, while I am trained as a chef, these recipes are simple enough for anyone who likes to cook. Even my single, bachelor apartmet dwelling friends can make them, and trust me, THAT is saying a LOT! I had to practically wrestle this book out of one of them who had "borrowed" it from me and got such great results that he was quite unwilling to part with it! enough said, right?

  • Makes Life Simple
Live in Australia and we have only just received the Barefoot Contessa on our Food Channel here. Was very disappointed to find the related recipes no longer available online and was even more suspicious that I now had to buy the cookbooks if I wanted them. Decided to gamble and buy one - glad I did! I used it the first night and haven't put it back on the bookshelf yet. Recipes are as easy as Ina makes them look on TV. If you enjoyed the show - buy the book - your family and friends will thank you and you'll be thrilled with such good dishes without a lot of drama....more info

  • New family traditions
This book will make you look like you've been cooking for ages, but without a ton of ingredients or effort. It has the perfect mix of recipes for all courses, appetizer to dessert. My only complaint is that some of the recipes (like soup) are for an army of people! If nothing else, make the roast chicken. It really is perfection....more info

  • The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook
The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook has quickly become one of my favorite everyday use cookbooks. Her recipes are easy, use readily available ingredients, are delightfully delicious and at the same time elegant enough for entertaining. An added bonus is the narrative throughout the book. It is filled with little gems of culinary advice and snapshots of who Ina Garten really is. This book is not only pleasing to the eye, it engages the other senses as well. This is meant to be used time and time again. I absolutely love it!...more info

  • Beautiful cookbook/Easy to use
This book is beautiful to look at; the full-size photos of the dish, the thick, glossy pages, and the additional notes next to the recipes make this a useful addition to any cook's collection. (It would make a perfect gift, too!) Yes, the recipes do call for extra-large eggs but, so what?! Buy a dozen!! I also especially liked the source lists at the end of the book. The recipes I've made all came out really well; there is something for everyone here. ...more info

  • Disappointing
I purchased this book mostly due to the other reviews I read. I am returning it because there were no recipes I thought I would use. All were kinda strange and didn't stir my taste buds at all. I'm surprised since I watch her on Food Network and really like most of what she does. Guess I just picked the wrong cookbook....more info
  • Great book....if you don't know how to cook
I ordered this book based on the reviews and from what some friends have said about it. In general, the meals are very, very simple, yet they lack in some flavor even when using premium ingredients and the freshest produce (roasted eggplant dip, spinach pie). I was looking for some entree ideas, that were a bit different and easy for entertaining but some were too basic (bbq chicken, ham, roast chicken, or of my least favorite food items (swordfish, caviar). Ina is very liberal with butter, which is not necessary and does not always produce the best results (1 pound of butter for 14 scones, which were very dry). However, on a positive note, the pictures are wonderful along with her tips on entertaining and presentation. I especially like her ideas of assembling a "country platter" of desserts pick-up at your local bakery). She has a gift for making everything look good, so I really appreciated her advice. In general, I would say that it's a great book for the beginning cook and entertainer. ...more info
  • Bad recipes
I made the dill & cheddar scones, ginger chicken, and potato salad. None of them tasted good. The scones had way too much baking powder (2 T) and it was overwhelming. I cut the dill from 1 cup to 1/4 cup and even that was too much and made them bitter. The ginger chicken smelled wonderful while cooking, but there was way too much liquid and the cooking temperature was too low. At 350F degrees it just stewed the chicken and I wound up with greasy ginger chicken soup. The potato salad was bland and gloppy. I do not recommend this book....more info
  • Great Food in No Time at All!
I have recently become a fan of The Barefoot Contessa (Ina Garten) and wanted to own one of her lavishly illustrated coffee table cookbooks. I checked them all out of my local library and settled on this, her first book--not because it is better, but because it contains more of the recipes I am interested in. The photos are lovely, directions easy to follow and taste is superb, plus they are not time consuming to prepare.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who just wants a better way to roast a chicken, make delicious French Onion Soup, roast vegetables and more. Be sure to try the fresh corn salad. Yummy!

Ina offers many helpful entertaining, decorating and shopping tips as well. You can't go wrong with this book.

  • Hit and Miss
I love watching Ina. I've made quite a few recipes, followed her book exactly, using only the finest ingredients and some were absolute flops. The ginger chicken turned out bad, the turkey meatloaf was not good but the roasted chicken was fabulous, as were the coconut cupcakes a big hit. The recipes are easy to follow but are very expensive to make. The ingredients are costly, she lives a luxurious life, she spends a lot of money making this food, and they are created for more than the average family so if something does not turn out you have spent a lot of money and have to either throw it out or literally eat it....more info
  • A classic!

This is the only cookbook I own that actual has bookmarks in it, notes in the margin, and stains on it from cooking. I love love love this book! The recipes in this book are easy and elegant, and always impressive. I just hope to receive a few of her other books for Christmas. If I don't, I am sure I will buy them myself! • New Year's Eve Party Perfect!
I made four recipes from this book, not previously tried, for NY Eve party that night. Lemon chicken turned out delectable, but when paired with her Satay Sauce to dip the chicken in, superb flavors married together! And her signature cupcake: buttermilk made the cake close to wedding cake consistency, with sweet, flaked coconut in the batter plus added to the cream cheese icing. I put them in Tulip papers from King Arthur Flour Co. and sprinkled good "dust" from Wilton over the coconut floating on the creaminess of the icing. They looked and tasted magical. Everything was a total Hit. Preparation was very easy and nearly every ingreient was easily available. My belief in Ina was confirmed by my virgin voyage with her recipes and suggestions, making each of us winners. I highly recommend this treasure....more info
