Product Description

A radical synthesis of science and personal experience that advocates a sea change in the way we understand and confront cancer

When David Servan- Schreiber, a dedicated scientist and doctor, was diagnosed with brain cancer, it changed his life. Confronting what medicine knows about the illness, the little known workings of the body?s natural cancer-fighting capacities, and his own will to live, Servan-Schreiber found himself on a fifteen-year journey from disease and relapse into scientific exploration, and finally to health. Combining memoir with a clear explanation of what makes cancer cells thrive and what inhibits them, and describing both conventional and alternative ways to slow and prevent cancer, Anticancer is revolutionary in its clarity. It is a moving story of a doctor?s inner and outer search for healing; radical in its discussion of the environment, lifestyle, and trauma; and inspiring and cautionary in its certainty that cancer cells lie dormant in all of us?and we all must care for the ?terrain? in which they exist.

Anticancer takes us on a serious journey and, ultimately, an empowering one. In the tradition of Michael Pollan, John Kabat- Zinn, Barbara Kingsolver, and Andrew Weil, Anticancer genuinely guides us to ?a new way of life.?

  • Anticancer: A New Way of Life
I found this to be a truely eye opening book. Anyone who has a personal or family history of cancer (and who doesn't have someone in their family who has been diagnosed with cancer)should take this book to heart. We are what we eat- no truer words of wisdom. This book explains exactly what we should eat and why we should eat it. ...more info

  • Interesting book
I heard about this book on NPR and could not get it at the library. So I purchased it. Interesting book, good recommendations on prevention. It will be passed around in our family as we are dealing with a member who has a brain tumor. Good insight into feelings, etc....more info
  • Amazing book. It tells you how to eat healthy. A Must read
This is one of the most usefull books I've ever read. Not only is it an inspiring story but it explains how you need to eat to remain healthy. Cancer is scary stuff to read or talk about. This isn't necessarily a book about cancer. It is more about eating healthy and how to help your body prevent and fight all diseases. The book was written by a doctor and the footnotes/references are amazing to indicate the research that went into the book. It's easy to change what you eat and enjoyable knowing you are doing something good for yourself. If you want you can skip the story and go directly to the chapters on foods....more info
  • What I've been looking for...
This is the book I've been looking for. Dr. David S-S takes the approach that there are things we can do BESIDES and IN ADDITION TO conventional medical treatments like Chemotherapy, Radiation, Estrogen blocking/suppressing drugs.

Diet (mostly plant based, less animals, no sugar or white flour, specific veggies, etc), Exercise, and Serenity.

    Thank you!

Easy to read, you can't put it down! and captivating. ...more info
  • The best book about cancer I've read
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2008 and have read at least a dozen books on diet and cancer. This one is without a doubt the best of them all. After reading it, I got three more copies and gave one to my PCP, who loved it and has been recommending it to his patients as the best way to eat to be healthy, whether one has cancer or not. He was impressed with the research Dr. Servan-Schreiber has done in his work and that he refers to in the book. To quote him, Dr. S-S is "brilliant" and his research excellent. I also gave a copy to my oncologist who was very impressed with the book and thought the charts were excellent. I am reading the book again and following his recommendations as closely as possible. This is a great book and very accessible to the non-medical reader. Other cancer diet books go into way too much detail about the chemicals in food. He covers these but does so without overwhelming the reader with too much technical information. Now I'm going to buy a cookbook the author recommends by Dr. Richard Beliveau, who is also an expert on cancer.

I highly recommend this book. There are other good ones out there, but this one is by far the best. BTW, this is the first time I've written a book review on Amazon, but I've done so because I am that impressed with this book. Although I have eaten a healthy diet for years, I wasn't eating all the anti-cancer foods, but now I am armed with the information I need to beat this disease....more info

  • Valuable Cancer Education
I hate diet/health book that are all menu and only fuzzy science. Everyone bashes "killer" white sugar, but this book tells you why it justifies the reputation, for example. That's what makes "Anti-Cancer" great. It articulates clearly the differing mechanisms cancer uses to take command of the body's immune system, and presents the latest research on what's effective against the attacks. After reading the book I created a PowerPoint presentation and made kids/family watch! ...more info

  • Terrific
Four years ago, I read a great book called Stop Inflammation Now! for heart health - I felt great very quickly after drastically changing my diet. Now I've fallen back on some bad habits, and this Anticancer book is kicking me back into focusing on reducing inflammation for overall health. (I need a book like this every year or two to keep me on track!)

I read a few sections of this Anticancer book here online, then ordered it 2-day shipping. It is quite an easy read, and very current and helpful. (I read about a study in the book in the evening, and then saw an article on that same study the next day at The day after the book arrived, I learned that a close coworker found out she had a tumor. I will recommend this book to her. It should offer hope to her as she has, according to this book, the best chance of recovery based on her very healthy lifestyle.

  • About cancer and animal proteins
I read all the books of David Servan-Schreiber in french and few of his articles .Great book as usual but David still think in a pretty conventional way about nutrition for cancer. He completely miss the point of the China Study and the clear relation between animal protein and cancer cells proliferation.

But what is the China Study ?

? The China Study describes a monumental survey of diet and death rates from cancer in more than 2,400 Chinese counties and the equally monumental efforts to explore its significance and implications for nutrition and health."

If you are serious about Nutrition to prevent or reverse cancer : a total elimination of animal proteins, specially dairies, is necessary.

See this article for a clear explanation and how Colin Campbell was able to turn off and on cancer proliferation at will by just changing the amount of animal proteins in a diet:

Sorry ( desole ) David only four stars for this time.

  • Truly a Lifeline
I too loved this book. As someone diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer I am trying to beat the odds and I knew there had to be more out there than what traditional medicine offers. I am now reading it through for the second time because I don't want to miss one important bit of information. I also plan to buy several copies for family and friends. I have three daughters and they need to read this cover to cover BEFORE they are in the predicament I've found myself in. The anti cancer way of life is something that we can all do. It amazes me that in light of all the proven benefits of lifestyle changes involving eating, stress, exercise, meditation, etc. oncologists are still telling their patients there is nothing they can do .... outrageous! This book has become my bible!...more info
  • Superb
I absolutely this book! The good Doctor breaks everything down in laymen's terms....and the regimen to eat in an Anticancer way is not difficult...the foods are everyday foods (other than the Agave Nectar)a that can be found in every supermarket...I am a person with such a sweet tooth that I really could have gone through a 12-step program...I mean I was addicted...after 1 week on the regimen, I'm slowly weaning myself away from the sugar and the Agave Nectar is very good and pleasant tasting (unlike Stevia that I'd tried many moons ago) It tastes like honey, so I use it whenever I have a sweet craving...

I have breast cancer and this book has been such a god-send to makes me feel that I can be proactive in my own treatment...that I can DO something about the illness...even if I never get well (I'm stage IV) it gives me a feeling of The chemo has been making me gain weight and this new way of eating is couteracting the weight gain!

I like the fact that the author is speaking from experience and not just theory...he actually had cancer...this is a must-read for everyone...I've been telling all of my family and friends to get the book and apply the advice!!!...more info
  • Excellent treatment of a complex topic
In my previous job as a copywriter, I was responsible for seeking out and writing about the latest findings in the field of health and wellbeing. As a trained nurse, I know how to read medical literature and I've developed a pretty good eye for what represents sound research and reasonable conclusions.

Given all that, I had pretty high expectations of this book, and I wasn't disappointed. The fact that the reference section takes up 28 full pages of a 243-page book shows that the book has been extremely well researched, and is not just the product of the author's own musings.

Dr. Servan-Schreiber has taken an extremely complex and controversial subject, studied reams of published research reports on it and drawn together a practical, down-to-earth list of suggestions for minimising one's chances of developing cancer, or giving oneself the best shot at recovery and survival if cancer does develop. There's nothing spooky or way out, and no inflated promises or false hope. It's just solidly researched, sensible information that we can all apply in our lives (and which I believe will enhance our lives, whether or not the spectre of cancer is on the cards).

Despite the volume of medical data included in the book, it's written in layman's terms, yet without being too simplistic. Further, it's a very moving book that has a lot to say about living and dying well. My personal view is that this book is a precious gift to humanity, written with compassion and insight, and I thank Dr. Servan-Schreiber for making this information available all in one place so non-medical people can benefit from the vast number of discoveries that have already been made in the search to unlock the mysteries of this frightening disease....more info

  • Wonderful Book!
I do have metastatic breast cancer (stage IV) with mets to my liver. I was only in remission for 8 months and now it's back. This book has helped me tremendously. I have radically changed my diet, exercise program and have gained an inner peace with myself. Dr. Servan-Schreiber has so eloquently written how to think about death, dying and reflection. He also writes in a scientific way how food plays a major role in recovery and is easy to comprehend.

This book is for everyone not just those of us who have cancer. I'm sure this will be one of those books I keep on my nightstand to pick up and read excerpts when I need information or reassurance.

  • Common sense is not that Common
We all fear the big C. I just lost my non-smoking brother to lung cancer. So any book that has a way to solve the epedemic or at least slow it is a good book.

The theory is basically "healthy living" works. Eat lots of vegetables and limit sugar and processed foods. And of course - exercise.

The authors' theory (and he is an MD) is we all have cancer cell present but it takes feeding with "bad" stuff to help them grow.

    Good book. Worth reading....more info
  • Hackneyed and Haphazard
"All of us have cancer cells in our bodies. But not all of us will develop cancer" is the pitch of the book's front cover. Meant to be provocative and insightful the pitch comes across as hackneyed and haphazard, and this basically summarizes the reading experience for the accomplished medical professional David Servan-Schreiber's book "Anti-Cancer: A New Way of Life."

"Anti-Cancer" recounts the good doctor's personal battle with brain cancer and his professional discovery that his medical profession is very ignorant when it comes to cancer; in fact shamans are better at treating cancer than the West's oncologists. It is a very unpleasant read because the writing is cold and cumbersome. That the book was translated from the French and that the writer is a medical professional accustomed to esoteric academic writing may be reasons. But I think that main problem is that this book is too rushed, and feels hardly edited.

The information in the book does not feel complete either. To fight cancer and to recover from cancer Dr. Servan-Schreiber recommends good eating habits, a section that he borrows generously from "Foods that Fight Cancer," a much more accomplished and informative book that clearly expresses the origins of cancer and documents well the fruits, vegetables, nuts, and beverages that most effectively contain cancer. Dr. Servan-Schreiber also recommends exercise, yoga, and meditation, as these activities permit individuals to be aware of and in control of their body and lifestyle. He also recommends support groups and coming to terms with death, and reports evidence that healthy psychology is just as important as a healthy body. In other words what you could learn from this 205-page is no different from what you could learn from one issue of "Cosmopolitan" or one episode of "Oprah" or from a fitness club brochure.

What's dangerous about the book is that Dr. Servan-Schreiber confidently believes he's telling us everything that is known to fight cancer. That's simply not the case. For example, neuroscience has discovered that our brains undergo a fundamental transformation when we fall in love and when we have children. Certainly, these two critical events must be inspiring and ultimately regenerative events for cancer patients, and I'd be very surprised and disappointed if no one has researched and investigated this area. (As an educator I think being with children itself is inspiring and regenerative, and I have always believed that the best psychotherapy is to teach younger children.) And I'm surprised that Dr. Servan-Schreiber doesn't mention volunteer/public service work as treatment for cancer patients -- certainly the act of assisting others and having your existence being acknowledged as beneficial to the existence of others must release dopamines in the brain, and that would augment the immune system, which helps fight cancer. Dr. Servan-Schreiber mentions that it's rare for athletes to obtain cancer, and so how about accomplished teachers, devoted priests, and charity workers?

"Anti-Cancer" is a difficult and cumbersome read, and for those who are seeking practical information on how to fight cancer and to improve one's diet and lifestyle overall I recommend "Foods that Fight Cancer: Preventing Cancer Through Diet" by Richard Beliveau and Denis Gingras. ...more info

This is an excellent book. The author combines his own story of batttling cancer along with excellent scientific evidence. The book does not have a strong a political agenda, but rather presents facts and studies from excellent sources from around the world. His personal story of fighting cancer is touching as well. This is a great book not only for those wanting to know about cancer, but also for those simply wanting to break from the norm, eat healthy and live a high quality life. I recommended this highly to my friends and family!!...more info

Well, I only could afford to buy four more, after the first two, and I've only suggested it to all others with whom I've spoken about health issues since reading the book. • You are what you eat...
I haven't read the book yet, but gave it 5 stars, because it's about time medical doctors realize that integrative medicine (and especially diet) is key to good health. My mentor, Andrew Weil, MD, has been saying this for years and years!! Dr. Weil's books and website are excellent! It would be wonderful if all medical doctors would realize the importance of integrative medicine without having to first become a patient. ...more info
  • Both well-researched and well-written
Dr.David Servan-Schreiber has managed to write a book that is informative, as well as personal. He details his own bout with cancer, and tells how it affected him both personally and professionally. The program he outlines in preventing cancer is based on extensive research, and his rationale for suggesting these techniques make sense. He goes against western medical tradition in that most medical professionals are more interested in treating existing cancers, instead of preventing them. In his philosophy of tuning into the mind-body continuum, Servan-Schreiber goes against the prevailing medical thought, but also offers a great service to people who may be at risk for cancer onset. As he points out, we all harbor potential tumors in our bodies, and this book tells how to prevent those tumors from taking hold and spreading. Those who follow his advice will be doing much to prevent cancer onset, of that I have no doubt....more info
  • Anti-Cancer: A Must Read for the Health Seeker
David begins the book with the story of his own cancer, thus giving us the rare perspective of an MD who is also a patient. (His personal account is thereafter woven throughout the text.)

While researching for my own book, I have read hundreds of nutrition books. Nonetheless, I was able to get several new gems and tidbits of information from this one. For example, he boils the obesity epidemic down to one single factor (p. 66). I also learned that turmeric is not effective as an anti-inflammatory agent unless mixed with black pepper.

Finally, an MD who addresses the importance of detox by diet! The book is worth the price just for the chapter on the anti-cancer foods, along with the colored charts in the middle that boil down the essence of the book's advice.

Although Dr. Servan goes into great detail about anti-cancer foods, he seems to be unaware of the importance of eating them in their natural uncooked state, since studies have proven that many of the phytochemicals are less bioavailable when cooked, and in fact cooking produces chemical toxins that add to the toxic burden the body must deal with.

Dr. Servan is still under the influence of the drug companies when he claims that one is a "charlatan" is one "refuses to work in collaboration with an oncologist and recommends stopping conventional treatments." Paradoxically, he admits just how toxic chemotherapy and radiotherapy are. He goes into great detail about how toxins are at the root of most cancers. So why he finds value in adding more toxins to a toxic, sick body is a mystery. The body, in its infinite wisdom, is able to cleanse by fasting and eating fresh juices and anti-cancer foods, as Lorraine Day, MD discovered when she healed herself that way of breast cancer, forgoing all convention toxic treatments. Tens of thousands of patients at various Natural Hygiene clinics have likewise healed of cancer without using toxins.

The basic chemical used in chemotherapy is similar to mustard gas, a World War I weapon used to kill soldiers on the battlefield. It was so terrible that wartime treaties banned its future wartime

If you can just forget his advice about toxic drugs, this book is a must-read for cancer patients and people wishing to prevent cancer. It has plenty of useful advice for the mind as well as body. This book really is a guide for taking back your power, expanding your life span despite cancer, taking control!
