Product Description

The Donvier Wave Yogurt Strainer turns 1 cup of yogurt into yogurt cheese, which you can put in a variety of delicious recipes that are low in fat, calories, sodium, cholesterol and lactose. Container seals for storage, as well as during the cheese-making process. Permanent stainless steel mesh strainer. Dishwasher-safe on the top shelf. Includes recipes and instructions.

Consisting of a plastic container and a stainless-steel, fine-mesh strainer, this simple unit converts 3 cups of yogurt into 1 cup of thick, creamy yogurt cheese in about 24 hours of refrigeration. (Thickening continues for 24 hours, though a thinner yogurt cheese results in as little as 2 hours.) The yogurt cheese then becomes a healthful, calcium-rich, low-fat alternative to cream cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, and even whipping cream. It can be used as a spread, in salad dressings, to top baked potatoes, mixed with fruit, and to make cheesecake. The unit works by allowing the whey (liquid) in yogurt to drain away, leaving the curds behind. The container is dishwasher-safe and seals to prevent odor transfer while it's in the refrigerator. Simple instructions and recipes for using yogurt cheese are included. --Fred Brack

  • So Much Easier!
I make "yogurt cheese" mostly to get the resulting whey, though I also enjoy some yo-cheese mixed with jelly on my toast. I have been using a colander & cheesecloth. Very economical but what a mess dealing with that cheesecloth. This was totally worth the $15 for the sheer fact that i can dump it in the dishwasher! Not to mention it's nice to have a lid over it while straining. The cons: It only holds 3 cups. Seems odd as most yogurt is sold & made in quart (4 cups) sizes. & the mesh is not quite as fine as I would like it for my homemade yogurt, I usually end up with some milk solid "sludge" that settles to the bottom of my jar of whey....more info
  • Simple. Perfect.
Yogurt goes in, whey filters out, creamy yogurt cheese results. There isn't much to it. It just works well; no more messy bundles of cheesecloth suspended in my refrigerator.

The only trick I found to it is that if you yogurt is too thin, some of it will seep through the mesh at first. I use store bought yogurt and scoop some thick unstirred spoonfuls out to line the bottom before stirring some salt into the rest and pouring it on top....more info
  • Dandy for small quantities
This device works to sieve out whey from yogurt, making a spread that's great for recipes as well. I've used it to make a soft cheese from homemade buttermilk (using the yogourmet freeze dried starter): this results in something like creme fraiche. While you can't make huge quantities at once (the container will hold only so much whey), you can simply spoon in some yogurt or buttermilk and let the cheese maker sit in the fridge a few days or until you are ready to use the spread. Other reviewers have called it hard to clean, but I find no problem....more info
  • Strainer did not work!
I know this product 'can' work because my sister has one and I have borrowed it. However, when I ordered my own, I got it, used it and the strainer mesh was not small enough and the yogurt went right through the strainer. I called the company (a family owned business). I am awaiting a replacement in the mail....more info
  • Love the yogurt cheese!
So I had never even heard of yogurt cheese, but I was buying a yogurt maker and saw this, and thought it sounded interesting. It is great! It is super easy to use, and the yogurt cheese tastes, to me, very similar to cream cheese. The whey that collects at the bottom can replace water when making bread to add a little more nutrition punch. Great product!...more info
  • Great item
This product was easy to use and went through the dishwasher just fine. What a great invention....more info
  • Perfect
I bought one of these on Amazon the other day. It works exactly as described. I used ordinary fat-free yogurt to create strained yogurt (or yogurt cheese) in 2 hrs. I only wish they made a bigger model to make more at one time. But this thing is great. Cleans easily, too.
PS--I tried this again, using the cheapest fat-free yogurt I could find. Turned it into thick, creamy fat-free yogurt that wasn't too tart, and tastes as good (or better) than expensive yogurt (fat-free or not!)....more info
  • Fantastic Gadget!
I like to make homemade yogurt but it always turns out too runny for my taste. I've been straining the yogurt myself but it's always messy and takes a bowl, strainer, paper towels -- not to mention another container with lid to store the yogurt cheese after it's done. The Donvier Yogurt Cheese Maker is so easy! Just plop your yogurt into the strainer and close the lid. Super simple -- and no mess.

Clean-up is simple. I just pop the strainer portion in the top rack of the dishwasher and give the container a quick swipe with a soapy sponge.

I love the nice cream-cheese consistency of yogurt cheese and now that it is so convenient to make I am using it a lot more often. Yogurt cheese is great mixed with fruit and honey, with salsa as a sour cream substitute to enjoy with tortilla chips or, my new favorite, mixed with a little salt, pepper, and lots of onion powder for a healthy version of french onion dip.

I highly recommend this yogurt cheese maker.

  • Cuisipro Donvier Yogurt Cheese Maker
The Cuisipro Donvier Yogurt Cheese Maker does exactly what it's designed to do. I have used this product to make good yogurt/cheese for the past two years, and it is simple to use and easy to clean with no parts to break down. I purchased this second one on Amazon as a gift for a good friend. She loves it....more info
  • This is a pretty cool little device....
But it was still pricey for what it is...a strainer! I like it because it is built into the box with a top. I don't have to worry about a strainer with a handle leaving a gap so air can get to the yogurt while straining. It is also pretty fast. I got this to experiment with making yogurt and yogurt cheeses. If you are doing the same this is a great little set. I still wish it was only about 5.00!...more info
  • Absolutely love it!
I bought this along with the Cuisipro Donvier Yogurt Maker and I love it. I put the homemade yogurt in the strainer and a few hours later, I have the smoothest, tastiest yogurt ever. It makes a big difference in the consistency of the yogurt and I would recommend buying it along with the yogurt maker. ...more info
  • Don't buy it
Sorry, I bought this from a cooking store and was very disappointed. I should have listened to some of the other reviews.

    1) It absolutely does not work with homemade yogurt. The yogurt just pours through the screen.
    2) The unit is not big enough (I make a quart of yogurt at a time). It probably holds about 3 cups.
    3) The container that the screen sits into is not deep enough - at all. The yogurt that you are trying to drain, winds up sitting in the liquid (whey) collected at the bottom of the unit. You have to drain it several times.
    4) The first time I put it in the dishwasher it showed signs of rust.

I took it back to the store.

Here's what you can do with stuff you probably already have in your kitchen.

Line a deep strainer with a coffee filter. I have a strainer basket that sits upright (similar to a collender). Place over a bowl and add the yogurt. Place in refrigerator over night. Ta Da! Yogurt Cheese!

You might have to use more than one filter to make sure filter comes up high enough on the strainer. If so, I would suggest lining the sides first, then add a filter to the bottom of the strainer. I'm going to buy some extra large paper filters (Restaurant size). ...more info
  • Easy and No Mess
    Cuisipro Donvier Yogurt Cheese Maker
What a great gadget, there is no mess and so esay to use. Can't beat it. I love how the strainer just lifts out, using a coffee filter was always so messy for me....more info
  • Simple and easy, perfect.
This is a wonderful little appliance for making yogurt cheese. No messing with cheesecloth and dripping mess. Just pour the yogurt into the strainer which is suspended over a container, snap on the lid and wait. In 24 hours or less, you have perfect yogurt cheese or Yo Cheese as its sometimes called. This is just a perfect device, and I wouldn't be without it....more info
  • Something different...
Who would have thought that there was another use for my homemade yogurt? I have several friends who are lactose intolerant (and while I spread the "cheese" on toast)... they tend to like my yogurt "cheesecakes" since they are mostly lactose-free. I now have purchased three of these so that I can keep up with demand....more info
  • Great Yogurt Cheese Maker!
I've been using this product consistently since its' arrival, making everything from Tszaziki sauce to Maple Cream! Love it!...more info
  • so easy to use and clean
This is a great product. Very easy to use and to clean. It arrived quickly, and I've been using it ever since....more info
  • Very nice!
Nice heavy-weight plastic, nice size. It won't make actual cheese, that is kinda misleading, but it's great for thickening yogurt into a sour cream consistency that can be used for making dips or adding to mayo or spreading on a bagel (that's what I did for lunch today!). I'm sure there are a lot of other uses too, but I'm just getting started....more info
  • Just a little too small
I have owned this for about 6 months and am very pleased with it. My mother liked it so much that I bought her one too. I usually just keep it in the fridge with yochee "making" all the time. If you have been using a strainer or colander to make yochee, buy this product because it is so much easier, handier, and space-friendly. I really like that it is dishwasher safe. My only complaint is that I can never fit an entire tub of plain yogurt in it... there is always about 1/2 cup leftover that just won't fit. This is annoying. If you are new to yogurt cheese, I definitely recommend you try it--the possibilities are endless and it's great for health-conscious eaters.

To the previous reviewer who had trouble with the yogurt passing through the strainer, it depends on what kind of yogurt you use. If the yogurt contains gelatin then it won't separate and I have found that some store brand yogurts won't work either. In general though, almost all plain yogurts work in the yochee maker, Specifically, I have had dependable results with Dannon's Fat Free Plain Yogurt....more info
  • works great with tweaking
I have made yogurt cheese in the past with cheesecloth and thought this item would make it easier, the reviews were good so I got two.

I noticed the mesh is rather large, my reusable coffee filter has very fine metal mesh. As I suspected my homemade yogurt ran through it. I lined it with a coffee filter and that solved the problem!! It's very easy to do, you can either use the round ones and trim them, or as I recently did, get the wraparound ones for perkulators.

When I feel it's thick enough I just tump it out into a storage container and I have a little pyrimid of greek yogurt or yogurt cheese, whatever you want to call it.

I've really aquired a taste for greek yogurt and this device makes it more economical to make. The large mesh actaully is better in my opinion because it's easy to clean and the use of the coffee filter makes it easy to dump the stuff in a bowl.

I only gave it 4 stars because it could be a little cheaper for all it is. Also instructions could be better and include the tip about the coffee filter, people that make their own yogurt frequently have a thinner more fragile product and the instructions do not even address that. ...more info
  • Works Great!!

  • Excellent! Functional, compact, easy to clean.
This is a fantastic little device. It's very tidy and cleans easily in the dishwasher. It also holds quite and bit and keeps fridge smells out of the yogurt. In addition to yogurt, I have used it to drain ricotta for cooking....more info
  • Love it!
I used to use a lined strainer propped awkwardly in a bowl covered with plastic wrap. I got this for Christmas. It's terrific. Does a better job somehow, and my drained non-fat yogurt comes out thick and creamy and decadent. It comes with a lid and is in a compact square shape so it fits in my fridge and is covered to avoid any frig smells. I now eat more yogurt....more info

  • Like Greek-style yogurt?
I bought this here because it was A.) $10 cheaper than the catalogue and B.) I like Greek-style yogurt, and can't get it here!
I use a non-fat yogurt and have this baby making yogurt cheese all the time. I is a great way to make a sour-cream like topper, and great yogurt and fruit breakfast treats.
Easy to use and clean. Skip the cookbook that is recommended with it, the recipes are not the greatest (I tried the egg-extender scrambler~yuck!!)
    Good product!...more info
  • Works Well, Could Be a Bit Better
I love the yogurt after it has been strained through this, but it is the wrong size. I bought this in conjunction with the Salton 1 quart yogurt maker. After the yogurt has cooled, I take a half of a cup out for my next culture and pour the rest into the yogurt cheese maker. The problem is that it doesn't all fit. There is about a half of a cup that doesn't fit. If it were just a little bigger it would be perfect. I'm not sure what the purpose of the wave at the bottom is, but if it were straightened out, the entire quart would fit.

It's also a bit expensive, but it is very convenient. There are many other ways to strain your yogurt including cheese cloth and a coffee filter or two in the bottom of a colander, but this is much more convenient. You simply pour (or spoon) the yogurt in, put the lid on, and stick it into your refrigerator out of the way. I like my yogurt VERY thick, so I usually leave it in over night. I've also left it in for about 24 hours and made a cheese cake from the resulting yogurt cheese.

I also used it with store bought yogurt. It didn't work quite as well with that. I'm guessing it's because of the gelatin they put in, but I'll probably never buy that yogurt again except to use as a culture. I'm spoiled now.

  • Excellent stariner!
I bought this yoghurt strainer several weeks ago and usuing it almost daily. Me and my wife, being originally from Mediterranean, use strained yogurt for several dishes called "mezes", including szatziki, grilled eggplant with garlic yoghurt, or just plain as a side dish. Also, you can add herbs and spices and make a healthy spread to replace your high fat cream cheese....more info
  • Believe, it works

  • great product! easy to use and convenient
I like this product a lot. I had one for years that I wore out, so I bought 2 more. It's very easy to use and convenient. In particular, I make a greek cucumber dip that calls for thickened yogurt, and the Donvier strainer makes its preparation much easier. During summer, I use it to strain vanilla yogurt and mix it with fresh strawberries or peaches. A delicious alternative to ice cream, especially for someone who is lactose intolerant.

The Donvier strainer cleans easily in the top rack of the dishwasher....more info
  • Easy item
In the past, I've used cheesecloth to take the whey out of yogurt, this product makes it easier. Thick yogurt is used for many sauces, also for coating items such as lamb before roasting in an oven. The cheesecloth method is messy, and you also have to worry about the yogurt picking up odors and flavors from your fridge. The tupperware type container eliminates that problem. This is a great product.

  • Super "Quark" :-)
I purchased this item, after I red here that it makes great cream cheese.
Being from Germany and having a hard time to purchase "Quark", similar to actual cream cheese, I decided to get this and see what happens. It really works !!! BUT BUT BUT, make your yoghurt yourself, too. ONLY then it works!!!!! It does not work with the plain yoghurt you purchase in the supermarket!!! - I like that it does not make any mess. This is another reason I wanted to purchase this. It is fast and simple, but still old fashioned. No work at all.

    Guten Appetit....more info

  • Easy, effective and delicious
I've been making homemade yogurt for about 6 months and got this to make low fat cream cheese. It's so easy that I thought I was doing something wrong. Pop the yogurt in and and next day I have delicious, fresh - as in FRESH - cream cheese. Wonderful with bagels and super base for dips. So much better than the fat free cream cheese from the store. I've tried using flavored yogurt for something different and as a fruit dip. I've made herb cheese for dinner parties with this and got raves from my guests. This will get lots of use and I highly recommend it. ...more info

  • I Like It - But ...
I usually make yocheese with a small amount of yogurt, maybe a cup or so, and have been using a Melita coffee filter with a paper filter, covered with plastic wrap, placed over a small jar - which I later use for storage of the cheese. This works very well for small amounts. I put the same amount in my brand new Cuisipro Donvier cheese maker and left it over night in the fridge. It wasn't as thick as it is with the coffee filter as not as much liquid (whey) drained out of it, after about the same amount of time. I think I will stick with the coffee filter for small amounts and use this for larger batches. It was very easy to clean and doesn't take up much space in my already over crowded fridge....more info
  • A better way to use yogurt
The excellent draining ability of the Donvier maker allows you to make "Greek" yogurt or other drier style yogurts at home. After draining the yogurt you can actually cook with it and it does not separate. You can also drain sour cream and ricotta in the device. All in all, a very handy tool for the cook and yogurt lover....more info

  • may not work for homemade yogurt
I make my own yogurt from a culture (no yogurt machine, just a ball jar at room temperature each day). Unfortunately, I cannot use my own yogurt in this cheese maker, it just flows through the mesh.
