Why You Should Monitor Body Water and Fat Percentage
If you're like most people, you're not drinking enough water. If you wait until you feel thirsty, your body is already suffering from the effects of mild dehydration. You continually lose water during the day through sweat, urine and breathing. The amount varies due to several reasons, including your physical activity level, illness, medications, poor nutrition, or even climatic conditions. Monitoring your body water percentage allows you to quickly compensate if your levels are low, allowing your body to function more efficiently. Having the right amount of water in your body will not only make you feel healthier, but you'll also reduce your risk of developing serious health problems in the longer term.

High body fat levels can reduce your endurance and have been linked to heart disease cancer and diabetes. Tanita's body composition analyzers monitor your body fat and body water levels with Bioelectric Impedance Analysis, or BIA, the same advanced technology used by doctors. Foot pads send a low-level electrical signal. Then BIA measures the resistance to this signal as it travels through the body.

The Tanita BF679W is calibrated for standard adults and children and stores data for 2 people and measures body fat in increments of 0.5 percentage points. This scale also features a guest mode, allowing you to use the unit without losing information already assigned to the personal keys. The scale's large, easy-to-read 2.25-inch, 2-line LCD shows weight and body fat simultaneously, and instantly compares these readings to healthy ranges based on the user's age and gender. Simply supply your gender, age, height and weight into the memory, step on the scale, and the monitor does the rest. The results are analyzed according to each user's information, and the result is the one of the most comprehensive at-home readings you can get.

Operating on four AA batteries (included), the Tanita BF679W is intended for use by persons up to 300 pounds and is backed by Tanita's three-year warranty.

Body fat percentages are important indicators of good health. View larger.

Customer Reviews:

  • Tanita BF679W Duo Scale Plus Body Fat Monitor

Reliability or consistency in measurement is probably the most important factor when comparing home bathroom scales. The Tanita BF679W is a reliable scale. If one weighs with these scales and then reweighs a short time later, the results are the same or very similar. I have no basis for evaluating the accuracy of the scales other than to note that they tend to underweigh you by a few pounds when compared to professional scales in doctors' offices.

In addition to weight, you get a reading on percentages of body fat and total body water. Other reviews have suggested that these readings may not be accurate, but they are at least useful for observing the amount and direction of change for any given individual, particularly if records are kept. There is provision for storage and review of the data for two people for immediate comparison with previous readings.

The scales are relatively convenient and easy to use. The digital readouts are large enough to be seen. If weight only is desired, tapping a button on the base of the scales makes that possible. The only improvement I would suggest would be to increase the length of time the readouts are shown.

  • Excellent scale; useless bf%
I did a dumbbell test with this thing using 30, 35, and 40 lb dumbbells; both by themselves and with me holding them as I stood on the scale. This was to test both how accurate it was, and if that accuracy varied by the range of weight it was measuring.

It was never off by more than .4lbs, and since my dumbbells might be off by that much, that tells me this is a very accurate scale. Day to day it will vary by just .2 lbs depending on how I stand on it, so very good for tracking gradual progress.

Now as for the bf% monitor, that's almost useless. It is off by ~4-6% compared to the naval circumference method that I use, and while that doesn't sound like much, it has remained at the same bf% level despite the fact that I've lost 14 pounds since I got it. So, as far as tracking gradual bf% progression, it's less useful than a tape measure and a calculator.

So I'd give it 5 stars as a scale, but took away two for making us pay for a feature that doesn't work (for me anyway)....more info
  • Good Value Choice
I previously owned the Tanita 2001 body fat scale. When that one died, I upgraded to the 679W Duo model and have been very pleased.

The scale measures weight, body fat %, and body water %. The scale has 4 metal pads that will send a low-level electrical current through your body. People with higher muscle content will allow the electrical current to traverse their bodies with less resistance than a Mr. McFatty person. The scale measures this resistence and calculates your body fat and hydration levels from it. I have found the weight, body fat, and body water measurements to be highly accurate when compared to a couple other scales that I've stepped on recently.

There are three buttons on the face of the scale right below the display that allow you to input your sex, age, and height. It's all very simple to make selections and input these data. Along with these three face buttons are three toe buttons at the bottom of the scale. You can store personal info for two users (the sex, height, and age info) into two of the buttons. Then everyday when you want your measurements, if you're User 1, just touch Toe Button 1 or if you're User 2, touch Toe Button 2 and step on the scale. This way you do not have to input all that info every single time (like you need to with the Tanita 2001). This is a great feature. Some other brands or other Tanita models offer 2-10 User Memory, but they often do not have corresponding toe buttons, which means you still have to bend your fat self down and hit the user button with your finger first. Believe me, after 3 days of that, you're not going to want to do that anymore.

The third Toe Button is a Weight Toe Button that you can hit if you just want the scale to act as a normal scale. Finally, you can bend down and use your fingers to input age, height, and sex as a one-time use for a guest.

I've had my scale for 9 months now and it's always worked fine with no problems. It takes 4 AA batteries, and I'm still using the ones that came included with the scale despite my nearly daily use. This is much better battery life than the Tanita 2001 model, which seemed to only last 4 months or so. You will only need to occassionally wipe off the metal footpads to keep them clean for accurate readings. No big deal.

Honestly, for about $50, there are no problems with this unit. It's a great buy. However, I read some negative reviews here from confused people. First, there are warnings all over the box and on the site that tell you not to use this product if you have a pacemaker or internal electronic device that's keeping you alive. This is obviously because it measures your body fat by sending an electrical current through your body. C'mon, think people. And this isn't just for the BF679W, it's for all "commerical" body fat scales. Second, reviewers talk about the consistency of the body fat measurements. Your body fat can fluctuate several percent over the course of the day. If you always take your reading at the same time each night (right before you goto bed is ideal), you'll typically find consistent readings within 1%. If you measure your body fat right after you wake up, there will be all kinds of water centrally concentrated in your bladder that'll mess up the readings. Again, this happens with all commerical body fat scales.

Overall, this is a great, highly durable scale that delivers dependable readings. I strongly recommend it and would encourage people who are thinking of buying the Tanita 2001 or any other body fat scale that does not have toe buttons to purchase this model instead; it's worth it....more info
  • accurate scale! A great buy
This is the first Tanita scale I have purchased and it is very accurate. I am not so sure about the body fat or body water measurements because I have nothing to compare them. The scale is the same brand used at Weight Watchers and is the same accuracy as I get at their meetings. ...more info

I love this scale. It is easy to use and keep track of your weight. It feels study when you step on it and I like that. I don't like to step on a scale and feel like I am going to break it!!...more info
  • Works great.
Works well. Has more features than most scales we looked at. Weight, fat and water. Great for the two of us. Only stores for two people. Mostly to store your Age/Height/Gender. Than lets you know if you're in range for your age/gender/height. And lets you know if your are above, or below the range for your group. Does have a visitor feature that will only read weight. Easy to use....more info
  • Weight measurement right on....body fat % is a joke......
The weight measurement is extremely accurate. I would go with a simple weight measurement scale or keep seaching for body fat % scales if you want accurate results. My scale consistantly says that my body fat % is between 30% and 40%. It requires you to plug in your height and wight...I am a 5'8'' female weighing about 145 lbs... so basically there is absolutely no possible way for my body fat percent to be in the 30s or the 40s. Its measurements are not even close to reasonable. I knew it was wrong, but the numbers still scared me, so I had a fitness assessment at my gym and they measured my body fat with the calibers (much more accurate method) and it was 18%...huge difference and I will stick to that! ...more info

  • a piece of junk
I own a Tanita scales. It worked great until the original batteries ran out. A call to the company gave me the information that any AA batteries would work. That is an out right lie. I spent $ 24.00 on a variety of batteries from regular AA to Lithium AA and NONE works on the scales. Hence, I am buying a new scales now. It is simply too expensive to replace the scales every time the batteries run out....more info

  • Nice accurate scale
I have to agree with others that it is pretty useless as far as a body fat monitor goes. I would get wildly different scores from day to day. But as far as a weight scale goes, it is pretty accurate and consistent. It weighs me the same as my Dr's scale and usually does not vary the weight when getting off and back on. At times it has been .2 of a pound different but my old digital scale would vary as much as 3-5 pounds when getting off and back on so this is much better. The price is pretty good I feel for a good accurate scale. I also like the feature that two people can share the scale and have it remember each persons stats....more info
  • easy to use and appears to be accurate
Although I was initially depressed because this unit showed that I weighed about 6 pounds more than I had thought, I found it to be accurate compared to my old analog scales we had had for years. If you follow the instructions, it's easy to program and gives you body fat percentage and body water content, based upon your height, weight, gender and age. All good. I recommend this product....more info
  • I think I found one that works!!
This scale seems to be able to produce consistent readings each time I get on it; I had poor results with the Omron-400 which I returned, but this seems to keep saying the same things. I have not compared the results to other body fat devices like a caliper etc, but at least it seems to be consistent with itself; Something that other monitors seem to have trouble with; So I should know how I am doing in comparison to my own results, which is all that I need.

It is also simple to use and quick. ...more info

  • OVERPRICED SCALE with a Body fat monitor that DOES NOT WORK
This is simply an overpriced scale.
It would be nice if you could just step on a scale to check body fat %, but the fact is that it doesn't work that way. You can step on it and get a reading that is up to 50% different one minute later. This is a joke....more info

  • Scales Above Others
If you're dieting and working out, you'll need this scale. With the muscle mass increase and your fat mass decrease, it's difficult to actually see the fat loss, when you're trying to loose weight. With this scale, you can watch the body fat index decrease throughout your diet and be encouraged that it's working. The price is good. The scale worked and was in perfect condition, when I received it. All in all, very good buy....more info

  • Good Scale for the price
Excellent scale- ever since I bought it, I've been losing weight since I can accurately tell how much I weigh. It's a MUST for weight loss. I weighed 176 the day I got it, I'm at 157 right now.

As for the water percentage, it's worthless- as long as you're over 50% (for a male), your fine. It's related to the body fat %. The body fat % fluctuates too much to be that great. It's a good rough estimate- but I go from 16-19% depending on when I weigh myself. I find that I'm 16% when I follow the recommended advice (don't eat for 2 hours and then weight yourself), but that's definitely too low in my opinion. I still got a small beer belly. 19% seems more accurate and I get that after I eat. But the body fat percentage has definitely gone down since I lost weight, so like I said -it's a good estimate, but don't worry about 3% fluctuations.

I think the key with this scale is to note your lowest weight (in the morning when you get up, just do the weigh only option). That way if that weight goes down, you know you lost weight! And it's amazing how many pounds you gain right after your eat (clothes weight about 2-5 pounds depending on jeans/pajamas,etc.)...more info
  • this rocks!
I really love this scale! I just lost 34 lbs. and the scale I had fluctuated every time I tried to weigh myself. This scale is accurate & also calculates your body fat and body water which is important to your health. It was a decent price and I would recommend it....more info
  • Accurate Scale - Jury Still Out On Body Fat
I bought this scale about a week ago and have found it to be the most accurate scale I've ever had. It's consistent with the one at work I use, which is the weight balance type.

I've found the body fat measurement to be very consistent. Tanita recommends monitoring yourself at a consistent time (a few hours after eating in the evening). I'm consistent by .5%. If I try it any other type, it's the same. Not much variation.

However, I am a bit skeptical about results. Both my wife and I are fairly lean folks (the lucky gene). I fall under the normal range (15%). However, she consistently registers at a very low percentage rate (at 7%) - which neither she nor I believe....more info
  • Super accurate scale! Best I've ever owned.
I have owned lots of scales over the years and I have never had good luck so I was sceptical since I have never had an accurate one.
But this one I have checked it's accuracy getting home from doctors appoinments and checking my weight against this scale and it's identical to the doctors office! Easy to weigh little kids on too. Super easy to set up and use. Also, looks great in the bathroom. ...more info

I got this scale to help do the job and I have been so happy with it! It lightweight and attractive so I can keep it in my bathroom without it being an eyesore. It's readings are dead on with the scale at my gym and at the doctor's office. I like that it measures my wieght, body fat percentage, and body water ammount. It gives all the important info! • Be wary about using your Tanita in a bathroom.
Be wary of Tanita and their warranty claims. The product itself was decent, and fairly accurate, however Tanita is not a company that prides itself in customer service and product support. I used my scale in a normal bathroom environment, and after just 3 months you could see evaporation underneath the screen. I don't know if a gasket had a crack in it, or what the issue might have been, but the unit couldn't withstand the normal humidity of a bathroom. In fact, the unit was a good 20 feet from any active water, like a shower and tub.

I shipped the unit in, and without even so much as a courtesy call, the "customer service manager" returned my unit with a note that my warranty claim was refused, even though I had spoken to someone before about the issue, and said it would be replaced no problem. The customer service manager was nice enough, but said that even though it was well within the boundaries of his discretion, he was going to refuse the claim, because they refuse all like claims regarding evaporation. He even admitted that it happens fairly often.

    Stay away.

His recommendation? Buy another Tanita, and not place it in the bathroom. Right....more info
  • Tanita BF679W
This scale is very reproducible with respect to weight. However, body fat and body water percent do not appear to be very reproducible. Overall, still a good value if one doesn't overpay. Prices ranged from $50 to $80 on line and even higher at retail stores....more info
  • Apparently I'm nearing obesity
I bought this product because I am girl who lifts weights regularly so I am more concerned with losing body fat than overall weight. I am 24 years old, 5'4, and I lift about twice a week. Since buying the scale 2 months ago my body fat has gone up consistently everyday according to the scale. At this point it says I am 123lbs at 30% body fat. I think that even while taking muscle into account, 123lbs is in no way overweight for my height and age. Yet every BMI calculator I have found says that 30% is nearing obesity for my age and height. I tried resetting the whole program and still got the same results! The weight seems to be accurate, I just wouldn't trust the other information. Save yourself the money and buy a regular scale!...more info

  • Tanita BF679W
Thanks to all the other reviewers out there as I honed in on this product after reading other reviews excluding other products. As others have recorded this scale weighs a little lighter than my old mechanical scale but not enough to be a distraction. What I'm really thrilled about is it shows small differences and is a great comparison to what happens with my weight day by day. I don't as yet have much use for the body fat index or other features but the accuaracy of the weight reading makes it well worth the money. I had taken back a couple of digital scales purchased locally as they weren't accuate and varied quite a bit from use after use....more info
  • Very accurate (too accurate!)
I'm a stickler for details...you almost have to be to buy a scale that's accurate to the 1/10 of a pound. If you don't actually want an honest answer about your weight, don't buy this, but if you want the God's honest truth than this is for you. I'm not entirely convinced that the body fat and water weight calculations are 100% correct, there's a lot of variables and the average consumer has no way to test the validity of it, but as far as weight measurements go this scale is marvelous....more info
  • Great scale!

This product replaced an old mechanical scale that seemed to vary in indicated weight with the weather. (or perhaps the barometric reading?)
My wife weighed on Doctor's scales, came home and weighed, and the

  • Accurate, Yet Confusing
The weight is accurate but the body fat % and water % seem less so. I'm not sure what the function of knowing your water % is...except to know if you're dehydrated? Even then, do we not have an 'built-in' alarm function, called thirst? If this is important to know for you, then you might want to pay extra for this feature. If not, then just buy the cheaper version with the weight measurement. ...more info

Forget your overall weight... work on re-composing your body... in other words: Getting your body fat down. Great scale for this. Accurate as I had a impendance type measure done by medial pros and it came out the same. One note... you must reach your full hydration level in order for body fat measures to be accurate. If you aren't properly hydrated as indicated by the scale then ignore the body fat calc... it would be inaccurate. Accurate if hydration is up though and a particulary good diet performance measure. You can actually determine in which direction you are progressing... remember you can be a thin person and have too much body fat!!!...more info

I read many differing reviews for this product, but I am very happy with my purchase. For the money I am not sure this scale can be beat. • The most accurate bathroom scale I have ever found
I have owned many bathroom scales. This Tanita model is the most accurate, to 0.2 pound. I verified it with a post scale. You step on it, take a measure, and step on it with a bottle of mouth wash weighing 1 pound; you get an increase of exact 1 pound.

The most amazing thing is: It can weigh objects of a few lbs. The other digital scales I have give you a 0 reading if you put an object of just a few pounds....more info

  • a very average scale...not worth the price
I got this scale because I figured Tanita had a pretty good reputation for quality - not this one. This scale feels so cheap (lightweight) and you get anywhere from 1-3 different readings each time you step on it - which is my #1 issue with it. It also has a button on the side where you can just weigh yourself like a regular scale (vs programming your information in) and you have to push it so far in that you can do it with your toe alone, you have to lean down and push. Then when you get off, and want to weigh again (which I do because it's always different!), the counter quickly goes to zero and you have to hop back on within 3 seconds, or it shuts off. I would never buy this scale again or recommend to anyone - very expensive for no more quality than a cheap $5 scale at Walmart....more info

  • Tanita Scales Read Body Fat Higher by 5-8%
After weighing myself consistently for a week, the scale continued to read 42% body fat. A couple days later I registered for the National Body Challenge and they took my fat percentage and said I was actually at 37% body fat. A personal trainer told me the hand-held body fat analysis gadgets are more accurate than the scales. It is pretty accurate in terms of weight, but I've read that can be a little high too. If I could change my purchase I would have ordered the Omron Body Fat Analyzer, it's usually only about 3-4% higher. As always, the most accurate way to measure body fat is with calipers...if you can do it by yourself!...more info
  • It weighs accurately; What more could you want?
I bought this scale for my wife (ya, I'm that sort of guy)! She's definitely not heavy, but 'concerned' and a follower of Weight Watchers. I was shocked to read various scale reviews prior to purchasing this one and find so many that did not weigh accurately! Well, this one was highly rated by most reviewers for accuracy & they are right. This scale is very accurate in determing a person's mass (sorry, I was a Physics major too) and confirmed at her Weight Watchers' weighings. As for it's accurate determination of "body fat" and "water", I can't say, but feel these are a bit gimicry anyway.

As for my wife, she loves the scale & me. Although, her love for me covers over many poorly chosen gifts, so I'm not absolutely sure about her love for the scale. However, I do know she uses it ever day and enjoys telling me of her victories....more info
  • Eh, so so scale
I bought this with high hopes but I am really not sold on it. Weight wise, it does very well. Body Fat and Total Body Water I am not sold on. The fluctuations are very broad and to tell you the truth, it just doesn't seem to be accurate in that department. The total water never changes no matter how I try to drown myself in water in the days before a weigh in and the body fat changes every time I step on it. Following the instructions, this unit does not do accurately what it was designed to do. For the price though, it's not a bad scale overall....more info
