  • Tasty food and I'm keeping my weight on target
My wife invested in this book when we tried the South Beach diet. We are both back to our target weight and enjoying the recipes. I recommend this book and the original, The South Beach Diet....more info
  • Practical and simple -- yet delicious!
The recipes are clear, use common ingredients, and are not overly difficult to prepare. You can learn a lot about healthy cooking when you pay attention to the ingredients that are used. Finally, taste is not compromised in these recipes!...more info
  • South Beach Wonder Book!!!
Recently I purchased the South Beach Cookbook. Since I am on the South Beach Diet, this cookbook has made it so easy for me to follow the plans.
It not only took the guess work out of prepairing meals, but also gave wonderful flavers to the foods. I highly reccommend this book for cooks who want a new HEALTHY WAY of cooking. E. Straus

  • 50/50 Chance
I have been on the diet for about one week. I too had to tag recipes that were appropriate for Phase I since it is not organized. So far I have had about a 50/50 chance of trying a good recipe. Most recipes have been just so so, not something that I would try again. One recipe, Salmon Chowder which claimed it would be creamy, I put down the garbage disposal! I also agree that it takes a lot of ingredients, or a lot of time to plan how to buy common ingredients for a week of cooking. Not sure if I am happy yet, I will keep trying for a week or so....more info
  • Now that's what I like - diet recipes that are also tasty!
The recipe book and its companion paperback guide make it easy to sort out where all the "sugar" and "fats" are hidden in the prepared foods at the grocery store so you can make healthy decisions according to your own needs. The recipes are good - some a bit too fancy for our tastes - but all can me modified with the foods and spices on the lists that you like. We've also found several new favorites!...more info
  • Best Cook Book I Ever Bought.
I bought this book book to follow up with the SouthBeach Diet Book. This cook book added such a great variety to our meals. My husband said, "If these are the meals I'm eating on this diet, I'll stay on this diet forever." They're delicious and easy to prepare. Thanks for a new eating lifestyle......more info
  • Fits South Beach perfectly
Easy to follow recipes that fit perfectly with the South Beach plan and take out the guess work from cooking while using everyday ingredients....more info
  • Ok
I was a little unhappy about this book. The middle part of the book when i opened it fell apart. There was a huge section in the book where the pages where not attached to the spine of the book. This made it difficult for me to go through it. The ad should have been a little more clear on this part. However, I do still use the book but not often very rare. ...more info
  • South Beach Diet works miracles!
I went on the South Beach Diet in November 2005. In one year I went from weighing 280 lbs to weighing 215! My cholesterol went from 221 to 141,and my blood pressure went from 150/100 to 117/77 (with NO drugs). Also I lost 6 inches around my waist. It went from 42 inches to 36.As of May 2008, I currently weigh 212 (at 5' 11') and am trying to work my way to 195 now.I own all of the books and am one of the biggest advocates of the diet. I would recommend this book to anyone! ...more info
  • Love the Large Print
I have been on the South Beach Diet since December 2006 and have lost 25lbs to date. I love the Large Print because I can prepare a meal without having my glasses on... and the recipes are great. I can eat anything I want and with exercise it has helped me lower my cholestoral and high blood pressure.
I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to add some spice to their recipes... even if you don't want to lose weight....more info
  • Great Cookbook
Love to open this cookbook and find a recipe that is perfect for any phase of South Beach....more info
  • Great cookbook
Purchased this for my daughter, who is not on a diet, but is very health conscious. Great recipes, athough they use a lot of ingredients and take a while to prepare. I had also bought her the South Beach Diet 30 Minute Meal cookbook. She doesn't have a lot of time to cook, but this has great, quick recipes that are easy to prepare. Both books together give a good variety of healthly recipes....more info
  • This diet works for me
The South Beach Diet is divided into three different Phases. The first Phase lasts for two weeks and is the strictest of the three. Each Phase includes specific allowable foods on the Foods to Enjoy list, as well as meal plans and recipes. Dr. Agatston says decreasing the bad carbs will help you metabolize what you eat more effectively and will also improve insulin resistance, leading to weight loss. The diet is based on the Glycemic Index.

He says you will become accustomed to eating the good carbs and fats and leaving the bad ones behind. He says by doing so you can lose anywhere between 8 and 10 pounds in two weeks...more info
  • Not so bad, not always so great.
I've been doing low carb for ages and checked out this book for some new recipe ideas. Most are easy enough to prepare. Some are keepers, some stinkers. My fave? Red Snapper with Avocado Salsa....more info
  • Great recipes - even for those NOT on Bouth Beach diets...
This is a good cookbook period. It just happens to be a healthy one as well. I have been on the South Beach eating plan for quite a while and cook out of the South Beach cookbooks a lot and my family loves the food and doesn't even know they are healthy....more info
  • Bland, Bland, Bland!!
Ok, I have been following the South Beach Diet successfully for over a month now, and plan to stick with it. BUT, this book contains recipes that are mostly bland, not to mention they always advise too much time for cooking the meats, which leave them dried out as well as BLAND. I found myself dousing most entrees with hot sauce to make them edible. I will say that the sauce recipes (South Beach cocktail, teriyaki & ketchup) were very helpful, and there are occasional OK recipes in here. All in all, one could find better recipes on on-line forums than in this book....more info
  • Excellent Addition to Cookbook Collection
I am estatic that this was published. I purchased it the second I saw it. Although I've had this book a few years, I actually wore the slip cover off and now the book is starting to look a little worn. These are excellent, healthy, quick and easy recipes to follow if you need help in deciding where, when or what to eat while trying to be healthy. Just for myself or for me and my fiance, these recipes work great and we dont feel guilty for cheating a little either. We have a solid core that we follow so staying on track is easy. These are excellent healthy recipes and I would highly recommend them. ...more info
  • OK but not what I wanted

  • Great recipes for a life style change
We love to eat in my family, but need to eat healthier. My physician suggested South Beach, and since I have to have a recipe to cook by, I bought this book. It has quickly become one of my favorites, and has yet to make it to my bookshelf, it stays on the counter, in use.
If you are doing a no-carb diet, this is not the book for you. If you want to eat the "good" carbs and stay away from the "bad" carbs, and generally eat healthier, then this book will help....more info
  • Lots of Recipes
This book is not just for the dieter, but also for peopl that just want to eat healthier. There are lots of recipes with pictures to help with becoming healthier. Great book!...more info
  • gourmet
If you are one who loves to try out new and exotic recipes...this is for you. If you are looking for easy, quick recipes....not so much. It is nice, however, that the Phases are color coded so you know if the recipe is the right one for your phase. Included is a condensed over-view of the diet....more info
  • Good recipes but you have to find them
I have to say that this book has some good recipes although they are hidden among a lot of difficult and not so flavorfull foods. Most of the time I find myself modifying the recipes so that they will turn out better. However I really think the desserts are beyond help. I have tried 4 of them and they have all been duds. The book is a decent investment if you have the time to sort through the recipes and you have a family that is willing to experiment with sometimes not so good dishes. ...more info

  • great addition to any kitchen...not just for dieters!
i just bought this cook book to accompany the quick and easy south beach diet book. most of the recipes are quick in this book as well, and it gives a nice variety in each category. if you are hardcore on the diet, or just looking for some healthier alternatives, this cookbook is nice. we have found that everything we have made so far does not taste like it came from a "diet" cookbook. do'nt let this fool you into thinking that the recipes for muffins, pancakes, and sausages are going to taste like the real thing. these are alternatives to the real thing. we are using wheat flour, oat bran, turkey bacon and sausage and they taste like just that...wheat flour, oat bran, turkey bacon and sausage. these are meant to be a healthier alternative, not an exact replica of what's bad for us to eat! as long as you keep this in mind, this cookbook is great. the main entrees are much better than the breakfasts because there are less "replacement" ingrediets. ...more info
  • It's ok
It has lots of recipes and it is we organized. I have had this book for over and only used one recipe. It has lots of phase 3 recipes and I am still in phase 2.

In a nutshell, it's good to have around.

I would like to get the other South Beach Diet cook book that has 30 minute recipes. ...more info
  • Very helpful in keeping me on the South Beach diet
I was happy to receive this book because the recipes added some variety to what we had been eating on the South Beach diet. I've lost 30 pounds so far and I think that this book will really help keep it going. I was a little dissappointed to find recipes that are in the SB DIet book. I would have liked to have all new recipes....more info
  • My mouth started Watering!
I went on South Beach in December and when I moved to Phase 2 I was letting myself get away with more that Phase 2 or 3 allow. I ordered this book to add more variety to my life, and the moment I opened it, my mouth was watering! The recipes are amazing. Like other South Beach recipes, some of them can be expensive to make (as better cuts of meat that are leaner, tend to cost more), but there is alot of variety and not too much complication. Some recipes are for Phase 2 or 3, While some you can eat right away. It is split into sections like any other cookbook. The only thing you have to watch for some of the recipes is portion control, which you should be doing with certain foods anyway. As someone who knows this program works, this cookbook is a nice addition to the South Beach plan, and offers enough variety to keep you on the diet for life. I think owning all of the cookbooks is your best bet, as it will offer a variety of menu options to accommodate you for the entire year....more info
  • I've lost about 5 pounds.
Total determination is needed to lose weight and I've always thought the formula to be relatively simple: eat less calories and burn more through exercise. However, it is very difficult to do so. So I turned to South Beach diet. I've found this to be a very practical diet. After the initial first two weeks (the strictest) I've lost about 5 pounds. But, I've done no exercise whatsoever and have eating quite a bit which accounts for the lower than the average weight loss. ...more info
  • Eating Thin and Healthy Can Be Beautiful and Tasty!
You will only be interested in this cookbook if you are a committed follower of The South Beach Diet. If you are an Atkins freak, go elsewhere!

I lost 50 pounds on the South Beach Diet. To me, that accomplishment was less impressive than the fact that I couldn't lose weight on any diet before I tried this one. I think I had become insulin resistant, and everything I ate turned to fat . . . even when my calorie count was low.

I found the diet appealing for some other reasons. First, I already ate a low fat diet and felt comfortable doing that. So I didn't have to change that part of my healthy eating. In fact, I was also being sure that I got "good" fats like omega-3 fatty acids from eating fish. Second, I could still eat carbs . . . I just had to avoid the ones that turn into instant blood sugar. Third, Dr. Agatston also introduced some new staples into my diet that I enjoy such as low-fat cheese snacks, having a few salty almonds, and eating steaming bowls of old-fashioned oatmeal. Fourth, and here's where the cookbook comes in, he introduced to me the idea of tasty, healthy ingredients I can use to spruce up simple foods. As a result, my cupboard has about twice as many spices as before (I love to put cinnamon on almost everything!) and my refrigerator has lots of new kinds of vegetables and fruits that I stir into all kinds of dishes. Suddenly, the ordinary becomes special and interesting!

In this cookbook, Dr. Agatston once again calls on top chefs to show you how to make delicious, healthy dishes. Most recipes have fewer than 10 ingredients, and you probably already have most of them. The preparation and assembly are pretty straightforward. Even I can do these recipes! Each one also comes with nutritional descriptions of calories, saturated fat, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, cholesterol and sodium on a per serving basis. Presentation is at least half of the value of fine food. This cookbook comes with beautiful color photographs of ways to serve the final dish. Your mouth will water with healthy saliva when you get a look at these beauties!

This book would make a great birthday or Christmas gift for a friend who is on the South Beach Diet. And it would make an ever better gift for you.

    Great work, Dr. Agatston!...more info
  • Good recipes even if you aren't on the diet
A couple of years ago my girlfriend had a little girl and wanted to lose the extra baby fat she put on so she went out and bought this book. I have never been a fan of these diets but the book did intrigue me. I read through a lot of it and started to get interested in the recipes. The recipes my girlfriend made me where very good and flavorful. She ended up following the South Beach Diet and lost a good amount of weight. The first week is said to be a little hard but once you get past that week there are great and delicious recipes to make....more info

  • The Perfect Companion for South Beach Dieters: Lots of Tasteful Recipes

Let me start saying that I have read a lot of books on weight loss and I have my own experience in the weight loss game, having being able to loss more than 200 lbs and shrink my waist (from 44 to 32) in about eight months, and I have been able to keep in good shape for more than 6 years. I believe that for a Weight loss program to be effective in the long term it has to be realistic and it has to be practical and easy to follow, so one can stick to it in order to gradually obtain what we ultimately want: Burn unwanted body fat.

This book will not teach you what are the fundamental ideas behind the South Beach Diet, but rather provide a huge recipe collection for its followers, in order to make even easier staying in the right track for weight loss. What makes this book so practical is that it will help you introduce variations and new flavor to your diet so you won't get bored as follow the South Beach Plan.

I believe that anyone can succeed following the South Beach diet with the help of this book for the following main reasons:
    - You won't get bored of eating always the same dishes over and over again since the book has plenity of variations and combinations.
    - You will stick to the plan because the food choices and the resulting combinations are tasteful.
    - It is practical, no complicated recipes, no need to count and keep track of the calories since the recipes are designed following the South Beach Diet precepts, and best of all almost no hard to find ingredients for your dishes.

Weight Loss is not a simple matter, since it takes commitment and discipline to achieve real and lasting results. Once we accept this we are ready to turn advices into habits. Since you are checking this book I have to guess that you are interested in losing weight, getting in better shape or just be healthier, so I will share my own experience in the weight lose game:

My own successful personal experience in weight loss is based on strategies to boost metabolism. Don't stress yourself, eat frequently, eat just what you need each time, and choose wisely what you are going to eat, supplement your diet. Yet simple and it works. I loss more than 200 lbs and shrink my waist (from 44 to 32), and I have been able to keep in good shape since then. Every single aspect of my life has improved since then.

Based on my own personal experience I can recommend another tools that you may want to consider, to establish your own strategies for boosting your metabolism, loosing weight, and even more important keeping that weight off. They are:

    - "Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss" by Mark Hyman. A practical a more realistic plan for weigh loss.
    - "The ABS Diet", which is another very practical, readable, insightful, and inspirational book.
    - A Body Fat Monitor or Scale. This will help you monitor your progress, to assure that the weight you are loosing is fat (fat lost = increased metabolism) and not muscle, water or bone mass (decreased metabolism).
    - A Heart Rate Monitor Wrist Watch. This is an excellent tool that will help you monitor and control your Heart Rate in order to keep yourself in a burning fat state (increased metabolism).
    - "Heart Monitor Training for the Complete Idiot", a primer on the use of Heart Rate Monitors for health improvement or weight control.

If you want to star focusing only on your diet, the first two may be worth considering. If you exercise, or want to start doing it right, the last three are for you. If you do both, all the recommended options can improve your results.

I am 39 years old, With the help of the tools I just mentioned not only I went fro size 44 to size 32 pants, but also obtained substantial benefits that included weight control, cardiovascular improvements, lowered blood pressure, and improved muscular-skeletal strength and flexibility, but also the myriad of mental and psychological benefits derived from being in the best shape of my life.

Keep in mind that loosing those extra pounds are just part of the equation, you also need a plan that helps you keeping them off. Anything you choose to do that increases your metabolism is in the right direction. A high metabolic rate will keep you burning calories (and fat) all day long....more info

  • The cookbook that passed our road test!
We've now had over 30 patients in our cardiology practice "road-test" and try many of the recipes in Dr. Agatston's companion volume to his popular South Beach Diet. The response has been overwhelmingly favorable, both in taste as well as in weight loss.

The condiment recipes, like South Beach Barbecue Sauce and South Beach Teriyaki sauce, have gotten rave reviews from our patients, as well as some of the unique vegetarian entrees, like tofu cacciatore and baked Portobello caps with melted goat cheese. Dr. Agatston, a professed chocoholic, concludes with 20 recipes for desserts that use some clever substituting to avoid excess sugar, flour, and unhealthy oils.

The Cookbook is also a graphically-beautiful book, with full-color photos accompanying many, if not most, of the recipes. ...more info
  • What were they thinking?
I think in general that this diet is something needed in this fat country of ours, and I fully support the basic principles of it. HOWEVER, I find this cookbook overly complex, and I am an accomplished cook. The recipes are complicated, require too many 'special' items, seem exotic just for the sake of making you feel like you are really doing something special, and don't taste all that great. In EVERY SINGLE recipe I have tried so far, the instructions are either incomplete, contradictory to themselves, or obviously wrong, and the ingredient list is inconsistent with the instructions. It is as if the book was written in a hurry, and no one tested them, much less proof read them for accuracy or completeness. If you othink you can hold a day job and follow these recipes you are fooling yourself. I have been getting up an hour early to prepare for the day, and I end up in the kitchen, after work, twice as long as I normally am to create these monstrous masterpieces of odd tasting entrees. Since we have moved on to phase 2, I have reverted to the Body For Life cookbook, whichi s by FAR easier to read, create, and much tastier. I would HIGHLY recommend it- it follows the basic principles of the SB diet, but it is SO much better; better thought out, better (fewer) ingredients, better tasting, and easier on those of us who don't have live in cooks. Unfortunately, like the SB Diet, the desserts are completely disgusting, but I think there is not much you can do when you cut that much out of your diet. I still advocate REAL dessert- just don't eat so much of it....more info
  • She Unlimited Magazine
There are masses of carbohydrate diets like the Atkins Diet and The Zone. Now Ham tons diet meets South Beach. I think most of us know the reason for it's creative principle of lowering cholesterol for Dr A`s patients and those with diabetes. The diets regimen is based on the consumption of complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and lean fats and proteins. It eliminates simple carbohydrates almost entirely (sweets, pasta, most bread, etc.) and aggressively restricts carbohydrate consumption during the weight loss phase of the diet, similar to Atkins.
This type of diet is simply going to lower caloric intake for those who follow it, consequently weight loss. I still think calories count, although you can eat what you want from the allowed foods list, if you overtake in calories....well, some experience no weight loss. However over time your hungry will subside and you will then naturally take in a less amount of food.
The book does focus on decreased carbohydrate consumption in a healthier manner, but the book falls into the trap of marketing itself in a similar manner as all fad diets: they clearly know what appeals to desperate, overweight people and they use the common buzzwords in this business such as, "lose weight fast", "13 Pounds in 2 weeks", "cravings were gone", "never unsatisfied." Overly optimistic claims are certainly dubious when lasting weight loss is difficult, as we all know.
Which diet does not, how else to get the market moving without such BUZZ words. It is essential. And this diet makes diet sense. It is easy to follow, some find it hard finding the low fat ricotta cheese, but other then that it is a simple lay out plan for regular people and not geared toward the fitness enthusiastic.
Keep in mind once you reach your goal you can have your loved (no so healthy foods) in moderation..
It takes hard and adding some source of exercise into the program just helps to build you metabolism. The Cook book is just an added great feature

I did it, you can do it too.
