  • Good deal
If you're just starting WoW or getting a second account, this is currently the best buy option until they bundle both the expansions with the main game. WoW provides a diverse world to explore with rich detail. If you're new to MMORPGs, it's easy to learn how to play as you develop your character's abilities. Since you'll be making friends online as you level, you will want to try and start on the same realm as any of your current RL friends who play. ...more info
  • World of Warcraft MMORPG
I bought this pack just after the Lich King expansion pack (which I haven't needed yet) came out. I have thoroughly enjoyed levelling up my characters and exploring the game world as I learned my way about and how to play to a reasonable standard.

There is no doubt that the game maps are huge and it does take some time getting about. This is offset by the fun level of the travelling - flying over different maps on a gryphon or hippogriff can be very entertaining and WOW even has different skies and weather according to the time of day! In addition some of the quests can be quite amazing - the one where you kill Tethyr in Theramore is quite different from most of the questing within the game and great fun.

To be honest after the first week or so I stopped using the enclosed guides and I haven't yet got to the point of needing the Burning Crusade because my characters aren't high enough level. Despite all those web sites saying that you can level your character to 70 or 80 within a few days if you're new to the game it probably won't happen that fast. You're much better taking time to get to know the game areas and enjoy playing it. I've got to the stage of using online levelling guides some of the way and just grabbing every quest in sight and doing what I want the rest of the time.

WOW is very addictive and there are so many different things to do in it that it'll be some time before most players get bored with it. However before you start playing there will be very large downloads - mine were well over 1 GB in total and took several evenings to complete. Patience is the key here and once the downloads were complete and I was able to play I found it to be well worth the effort.

You don't have to pay to play right away - the game in this box is free for the first month and then your credit card will be charged or you can buy the 60 day credit card from Amazon or one of the WOW distributors in the high street. So you've plenty of time to decide for yourself. ...more info
  • Excellent Purchase - Lots of Fun
If you haven't purchased World of Warcraft, you don't know what you have been missing in on-line gaming. Warning, this game is extremely addictive. You'll be playing the game so much that you'll have to plan your life around it. This game offers lots of action, interaction with other people from all around the world and a thoroughly enjoyable user interface. It is also easy to learn and play. Recommended for all ages, including those of us who are baby boomers!...more info

  • Wish I could finish downloading everything so I could play
This may be a wonderful game. Or it may not be. Sometime next week I may find out. There were problems loading the game from the discs; that took two days to resolve, what with the limited hours the Blizzard tech support desk is available. And now that it's loaded, it is on its second day of downloading required patches. I have a DSL connection, but due to a number of factors the tech support desk couldn't help me with (or maybe was giving me the runaround on) it is downloading at dial up speeds. When you have several Gb to download - and the accumulated patches really are that big - this is going to take a while.

As for the package as a whole, the two "bonus" guides are miniature versions of the originals, which means the many graphics and especially the tables and maps are of very inferior quality to the original. I had to resort to a magnifying glass to read some of the text.

Since this is an online, pay-to-play game, the registration process required an upfront credit card, PayPal, or game card account. I inquired about this, since the box implies you get 30 days free with the purchase of the game (which, by the way, is slipping away while my computer downloads all the patches) and I received a disingenuously worded reply about avoiding interruption of game play time when the trial period runs out. You pay at the beginning of each subscription period and all the options except the game card renew automatically unless you cancel. Thus Blizzard gets their money even if you don't want to keep playing, unless you manage to make that unseen deadline to cancel the subscription.

Finally, I must say, that as I have periodically monitored the status of the "realms" (areas where your character is assigned to play)over the last few days, it appears that they are out of service a lot - at least once every three or four days. Sometimes they are out for hours. I rather doubt Blizzard gives you credit for those times, either.

So, think hard about whether you want to spend money on this. The Amazon price is not discounted, so you may be able to find it cheaper at a local retailer. The books included aren't much of a bargain, given their poor quality, and you can find all the information in them on online forums, so you may get a much better deal buying the basic program and the upgrade separately. Finally, if you do buy it, realize you won't be able to play it right away. Between installation issues and the required patch download times, it will be days or longer before you can play, and you'll need to leave your computer tied up downloading the patch files during most of that time.

On the whole: not recommended...more info
  • WoW IS KING!!
I've tried all of the MMORPG's out there, and WoW is easily the most fun. The gameplay has tons of depth, and there is something for everyone in the game. Great for casual gamers and hardcore gamers alike. Good family play too!

Buy it, you'll love it. Worth every penny.

  • Friends don't let friends play World of Warcraft
This game is really, really addictive. The sad thing is it's only moderatly fun because it get's very repetitive. You will find yourself wasting tons of time on this game, and when you're not playing and you're at school or work, you will be thinking about playing it as soon as you get home. Buyer beware this game is worse than nicotine and crack combined. . . friends don't let friends play WoW . . ....more info

  • I really enjoy this game
Well coming from someone who like to play single player RPG games such as Final Fantasy, Shadow Hearts, Jade Empire, Knight of the Old Republic, Xeno Gears, and a few others I never though I would like the whole MMORPG. That was until I tired out WOW.

I got the battle chest set back in may of this year. It took me a bit to get the feel of the game and how it plays. But now that I have I really enjoy it. The one thing I found out is that it's best to play different races and classes. It keeps the game from getting old. Even though this is the first online role playing game I have ever played I have been able to get into it. I like that well they have the PVP they also worked the PVE into it very well. I play on PVE and it makes it so I don't have to worry about any one attacking me when I'm on a quest.

I have found that there a some very nice people to. Sure there are some rude ones but from the amount of realms and the amount of people that play your going to run into some rude people. There is no way around that. But for the most part people are willing to help you Heck I have had people at very high levels give me a hand.

Really I just like the whole set up here the look of the game the way it plays the fact that it's not really super hard. And it's good for the amount of times I play it. If you can't play it as much as hardcore gamers then don't worry about it. WoW is made for ever one from the hardcore gamer to the gamer that can only play it maybe two days out of the week. ...more info
  • Great package/game
This is nice package that they put together with the first two WoW games and guidebooks for both of them at a very low price. The game is great and very addictive as anyone that has any experience with this one will know already. But its just made better being in one convenient and easily accessible package. A great purchase for anyone that interested in the series and wants to save a bit of change doing it. Just be warned that once you start playing WoW that will be hard to put it down. ...more info
  • addictive
Let me start by saying I have played World of Warcraft (WoW) for nearly two years now. Wow is by far the most fun game i have ever come across. The one thing that does put a damper on it sometimes is the amount of time bad players can cost you and your group when doing some of the harder content at end game, it's amazing how many people can't figure out that fire is bad and when you're about to explode running over to hug the healer isn't a great idea. Luckily that is a fairly small portion of the population and the majority of people you meet are enjoyable and fun to play with. Solo minded people WILL NOT like this game.

The battle chest itself is actually cheaper than classic and BC by themselves plus you get the guides as that added little bonus. For anyone considering starting this is the way to go....more info
  • Unbelievable Deal
If you're looking to play World of Warcraft, the Battlechest is really the only viable option. The Battlechest is the same price as only the expansion pack, and it also includes the original game, with a separate CD key that will be required if you ever want to make a second account or something.

    Great buy, great game.
Just be careful of how much time you spend playing it!...more info

I am very pleased with this purchase. The game is fantastic and now, like the rest of my family, I am addicted. There are layers of tasks and Quests for the character to do. • Best Deal Around
It's World of Warcraft, need I say more? It's great that this Battlechest comes with both the original game and the first expansion, The Burning Crusade, especially for this price. I tried getting this from Walmart and it's $15 more there. Both come with new, unused CD keys to create a new account and upgrade it to Burning Crusade ready. The "guides" are completely useless, as there are hundreds of websites dedicated to World of Warcraft information, but it's a nice bonus.

I played WoW from when it first launched until The Burning Crusade came out, quit, and now I'm back for the Wrath of the Lich King. Things have changed. Most players have a high level character, so it's incredibly hard to find a group for anything under level 60. It has gotten to the point where low level players just beg high level players to do the work for them. It has created a larger amount of new players that never learn anything, so you'll have to learn your class on your own and avoid these lazy people....more info

  • Fun and addicting
I started playing a couple weeks ago on a couple 10-day free trial accounts. Nevermind the details of why two accounts, suffice it to say, I was "recruited" into the game and find it very enjoyable. It is visually stunning.

I agree with the critical review, with the caveat is that if you change the game world, you could break it for other players, so it is best to not change it.

After installing, I still had a couple hours of patching and updating, which was fine as it coincided with their Tuesday realm server maintenance which lasts 8 hours from 3AM - 11AM PST.

I haven't looked at the books as I simply dove right in on my trial account. The in game help and tutor system was very beneficial. However, you can make bad or good choices in character development and I've had a few false starts.

There is the tactical side to it that will require some learning as it's not entirely intuitive, but there are great resources on the net (WoWWiki and Blizzard's own WoW guide on their site: [...].

The ingame infrastructure and communication system (auctions, mail transportation, etc) is something to want a guide for and the WoW guide does cover a lot of the key aspects of the game.

World of Warcraft Battlechest is an absolutely amazing product. I was skeptical about online gaming and have avoided. But about a month ago my tv died while I was sick and since I was bedridden for 5 days I could only sleep and read so much. So I purchased WoW Battlechest and started playing. It is by far the best video game experience I've ever been a part of. I am not a complete convert to the online gaming rage that has been happening for years...I finally get why so many people for the online experience and why World of Warcraft is the number 1 online game. Not only is this "game" PAGAN (!!!) like all fantasies, but it is also SATANIC (BAPHOMET Belt Buckle Satan), and teaches children to disrespect and disregard JESUS and his MIRACLES. According to my stepdaughter, the game lets players use a MAGICK SPELL (!!) that lets them WALK ON WATER just like the LORD!!! This is the ultimate in blasphemy. How is a CHILD supposed to understand the PROFOUNDNESS of the LORD's MIRACLES if HE can just log onto the interwebs and do those same MIRACLES himself?!?! The game maker's anti-family LIBERAL bias is proved also, by the fact that now they have made my stepdaughter rebelious and forced her to DISRESPECT me after I took this "game" away from her for it being ungodly. This is inducitive of all of LIBERAL culture. The game makers SATANISM is evident in the name of their company. Blizzard Entertainment? The Norsemen belived that HELL was cold. This is certainly the way to go if your looking into getting into the World of Warcraft.

This game doesn't really break into new grounds in terms of gameplay. Mostly with kill 7 "wolves or goblins" is what your going to be doing alot of the time. They do a fairly decent job of mixing it up so that it doesn't get too overly redundant.

Gameplay is very good and fairly easy to pick up. My only wish would be to make it a bit harder since it seems a bit too easy at times. The world is seamless without load screens (except for when traveling) which is very nice.

The only real problem I had was that at times the community gets very annoying. Lots of it can thankfully be blocked out via filters. As a whole it has more good players than bad.

While I don't play too much of it anymore. Have to split time with Horizons while stuck working six days a week. Sort of cramps your video game time. I'd certainly reccommend this game especially the $40 chest since your getting a good deal. ...more info
  • Addictive but won't ruin your life
I've always loved massively multiplayer online games (MMOs), but swore off them after a horrible addiction to the first Everquest (EQ). After trying the 10-day free trial, I realized that WoW is no where near as bad as EQ was. The realms are massive, but allow you to travel from one point to another view zepplins, ships, and creatures (provided that you find the flight master in each location).

The rested exprience is what really makes this game amazing for people who don't have time to play it like the kids who do all the time, or for people (like myself) who enjoy playing, but refuse to dedicate 7 hours a week night to WoW. Essentially, when you log off, you begin to rack up rested experience time. When you log back on, your XP bar will show up blue, and any creature you kill, you get double the experience. This will last until the allotted rested XP time has expired (no real way of telling when that will happen).

Another good note is that when you die, you don't lose XP and you don't have a time limit to retrieve your corpse before it decomposes and you lose everyhing on it (like EQ did).

Levelling up much easier with this as well, as there are plenty of quests which give you a lot of XP compared to killing a creature.

This Battlechest is great for someone who enjoyed the 10-day trial, but is still confused about parts of the game. I haven't dug through the two books very much, but when I have, they've really come in handy.

If your significant other has a problem with you playing this "too much," introduce him/her to SecondLife, which will keep them occupied. Just make sure you have 2 computers; my wife and I keep fighting over who's turn it is to use the PC. Good thing I'm building a new rig as we speak, specifically for the purpose of resolving the WoW vs. 2ndLife conflict....more info
  • A good starter set
This is a solid purchase for someone interested in getting started with World of WarCraft. The included strategy guide for the original game is excellent, but the one for Burning Crusade is fairly sparse. WarCraft is a fun and fairly addicting experience, but those starting new so late in the game will find their first several dozen hours spent in fairly lonely territory (most players finished the original content years ago and even the Burning Crusade content months back). Those who have friends already playing, especially friends who might be willing to group with a newbie to help them speedily level, will find the experience more rewarding than someone starting on their own.

This is a great package for folks who are confident that they will stick with the game for long enough to get to the Burning Crusade content; for those just dipping their toes into the MMO pond, it may well be cheaper and more prudent to find a deal on the original game by itself....more info
  • A decent game.. Doesn't really break new ground..
As with most MOGs in this genre, like Dungeons and Dragons online, Runescape, Rappelz and a some others, WOW doesn't really break new ground. Ultimately, the game boils down to fighting stuff so that you can get better gear to fight more stuff. The graphics are amazing, but the fact that your character really has no effect on the in game environment aside from the fact that you can gank other players gets old after a while. I have a character that is almost level 50 and I've gotten tired of the same old grind.

Players of the game are diverse, and joining a guild helps alot with levelling. Sometimes the guild can help you out with the difficulties of say, purchasing a mount for your character to ride on. Yet, like any on-line community, WOW also has its share of jerks.

While the world can be beautiful to adventure in, and visually, some of the vistas that WOW provides are stunning, the interaction with the world isn't any different than other games in the genre.

When you're on a dungeon quest, sometimes you have to rush through reading the backstory of a quest that is within the dungeon itself because several in the group want to move on.

Because of the extreme amount of ganking that goes on in WOW, its best if you can travel in a group most of the time to dissuade any would be gankers.

WOW isn't like Fallout where some of the decisions you can make in the game actually affects the outcome of the story. Ultimately it boils down to fighting critters and other players and getting better stuff to fight tougher players and critters.

The books provide some assistance for first time players to WOW, but what really helps are the maps. However, it would have been nicer if the Alliance and Horde locations were made more distinguishable on each map.

The Battlechest is a great buy for newcomers to WOW. The game, the expansion, and the Strat Guides are a great deal. For the same price of just purchasing WOW at my local electronics store, I was able to purchase the Battlechest. Quite a deal.

With the visually stunning environments, I can see why WOW is such a popular game. However, for me personally, the game gets repetitive after a while.

played Everquest for about 9 years, loved it but it becomes frustrating trying to continuously level and buy new adds. Finally gave up trying to keep up, it was like trying to get yourself out of quicksand al the time.
WOW is refreshing, raising tradeskills isnt that easy as well as leveling but its wayyy better than EQ as well as rare lag and NO zoning issues..
I rate WOW now, BETTER than EQ !!!...more info
  • Excellent game, but use caution, read this post.
This is a very long post, but well worth it if you're seriously considering this game.

First and foremost this game is a milestone in the both the MMORPG and online gaming industry. With over 11 million subscribers, it's the largest online game to date, and for good reason.

The graphics, while cartoonish, indulge you in a moving work of art with flowing waterfalls, freezing tundras, and shadow-ridden caves. The world itself is simply huge (though surprisingly easy to navigate), spanning across four continents (one in outer space), and leaves the gamer with an unparalleled sense of citizenship. Once you log into World of Warcraft, you truly plug into a hidden universe.

The music is truly worthy of mention. When you first launch the game, you are met with a symphony of heart-pounding drums, violins, bassoons, or what-have-you. The music/ambience then changes frequently throughout the game depending upon your current location and really adds an element of class to the experiences of stepping into a haunted mine, or riding up to the gates of a citadel.

The gameplay ranges from simple to slightly complicated depending upon your class selection, but always maintains the smooth controls that are oh-so-user-friendly. You can select from 9 different classes at the start (another is available further on in the game), each of which have their own roles to fulfill by either Healing, Tanking (taking the hits for other less-hardy classes), or DPSing (DPS: Damage per second, a term used to explain classes adept at dealing damage). Also with the introduction of "dual-spec," a character is able to switch between two customizable talent builds (determines your main role: healing/tanking/dps, through the selection certain talents) at the drop of a hat.

The most basic gameplay consists of leveling your character from 1 to 80 via the completion of quests, invading of dungeons, and slaying of monsters, all of which grant "experience," and move you closer to the next level. If you grow wary leveling, it is possible to "que" into a battleground from anywhere in the world. There are four different types of battle: capture the flag, protect the resources, defend/attack the keep, and control the territory. You compete against real players controlling real characters on different computers, which is typically referred to as "PVP," or player versus player.

Once you have reached the maximum level, the fun has just begun. You will continue advancing your character by upgrading his or her equipment (or "gear"). Raids, dungeons and "heroics" offer thousands of powerful monsters that, when killed, give weapons and armor that strengthen your character. Dungeons and heroics are typically conquered by five players effectively working together to defeat the obstacles and creatures within. Raids follow a different suit, requiring 10 to 25 skilled players able to communicate and coordinate themselves in order to (hopefully) kill the most difficult monsters in the game.

Another option to the post-leveling stage (or "end game content") is coordinated PVP. Beside the four available battlegrounds, the game contains four "arena" maps offering extremely competitive play in the form of 2v2, 3v3, or 5v5. If you are successful, the rewards are some of the most powerful upgrades in the game.

Guilds, world events, seasonal events, mounts, professions, mini-games, parties, transportation and real-time economies are just a few more of the many other unnamed aspects to this game. Some things are simply best if discovered.

In recent times, the game has found difficulties in PVP in terms of equality. Some classes seem to always be more powerful than others, however, the developers of the game promise that they're addressing this situation.

It is fairly expensive if thought of as simply a video game. The game runs at (I believe) $15 a month, or $12.99 if you pay for 6 months at once. By the time you've purchased the original game and the two expansion packs, you're out $100+, which doesn't include subscription fees. The cheapest route to take is to purchase the Battle-chest (the first two games), the second expansion pack (soon to be added to the Battle-chest) and a large chunk of game time.

A key thing to consider in terms of price is that you're buying much more than a game. You're paying for the new content which is released almost every two months, the server maintenance, and in-game customer support. Also, keep in mind, that this game will (probably) entertain you for much longer than a TV or DVD or Console game. Sure, an XBox game is only $59.99, very cheap compared to World of Warcraft, but within a few weeks/months the XBox game will become dull, whereas this game will have already released new content to be conquered.

*This is why I only gave it 4 stars*
The game is addicting. Extremely. Dangerously. No, seriously, if you have any history of alcohol/drug/gambling abuse, you should reconsider, or at least be informed prior to purchasing.

I offer to you this solution: first, download the 10 day free trial. Next, keep a log of the amount of time you spend on the game during these 10 days. It's expected that you will 1-3 hours a day initially, but will quickly fall into the 4+ hours as your trial nears its end. After the 10 day trial, take a look at how much time you've spent on this game. Some might find themselves in "good shape," with only a couple hours of play time. Most will find that they've spent an upwards of 30 hours (or much more) on the game in only 10 days.

Determine for yourself if you truly have that much free time to spend on a video game. If you do, wonderful, then this is the game for you, and I hope you enjoy your experience. If you believe this is too much time to spend on a game, don't fret! Within the account creation process, you will be able to set up "parental controls" for the availability of play. It is in this device that you can limit your playtime to a healthy and sustainable amount.

I hope this was helpful....more info
  • 1 of a kind
Bought this as a replacement set for wife's laptop while we're deployed since she bought a new one. Both of us have tried several different MMOP games out there, and there's nothing better out there in this genre yet. Sadly probably never will be either. The graphics, artwork and over all gameplay are unrivaled. There simply is nothing close to equal. If you're looking for a fantasy style game and don't mind paying the low monthly fee, buy this. You won't regret it. The popularity of the game is true... no hype at all....more info
  • Ok deal, good game
    The Deal:
The price is a deal, because you are getting both wow and the expansion right + 2 guides. Well to tell you the truth the guides arent worth much. They tell you some WOW edicate, and some general information. All of this information is available on the internet and probably in the manual. If this battlechest wasnt cheaper than the WOW and the expansion alone, then I wouldnt recommend it.
    The Game:
No matter what anyone says this game is still a grind. Grind to get your levels. Eventually you are going to be required to group with others, so be prepared to. These seem to be the really only bad qualities. The good side is that it has more features than most mmos. There are battlegrounds to fight other players, tons of variety in monsters, very pretty scenery, tons of variety in every way. Besides these factors, the world is huge, and once you travel to a place you can fly a griffin back (really cheap), which save huge amounts of time.

  • Why wouldn't you buy both?
This contains the basic game and the expansion. There's no reason to not buy both, other than wasting money later. Though when you add up how much you can spend on Warcraft over time, buying the boxed game is the cheapest part. It's an amazing game that keeps growing; I've never seen anything like it. There's a reason there are over a million people playing....more info
  • Great Value & an Excellent Game!
This game is great. However, this particular item will only allow you to level up to 70. You will need to get the new expansion: Wrath of The Lich King in order to get all the way to level 80 and to be able to unlock the Death Knight Class. Also, the game can be very complicated. Learning and reading guides for it will help allot and you will enjoy the game more with your success. [&]...more info
  • Amazing game!
I am not a gamer at all, but my husband got addicted to this game and insisted I try it. It is really a fun game! The programmers who made it must be tops in their field because there are very few glitches or bugs and the game-play is very intuitive. The detail is just amazing - from stars in the sky to footprints on the ground, they haven't left out any little thing. You really become part of this imaginary world.

Even though a large part of this game involves killing members of the other faction as well as various other computer-generated beasts, this is not a mean-spirited game. It's difficult to be successful unless you team up with others and cooperate. I have seen a lot of very altruistic, helpful, and generous behavior from other players. There are always a few dorks around, too, of course, but for the most part this game seems to bring out the chivalry in its players. I'd recommend this game for age 13 and up. ...more info

  • Addicting
Started playing passively at a friend's house. Wanted to play at home. Bought it (Battlechest is a smart buy), set up an account, and haven't looked back....more info
  • One of the BEST!
Tons of content, fun, plenty of nice people still around, good for any amount of play, runs well on many systems (mine is 5 years old), Blizzard is constantly re-balancing the game (good!) & fixing bugs (I've never seen any) & adding content (for free)....more info

  • Great game, horrible delivery
The game, to me, lives up to its hype. I had the trial for 3 days before I decided to purchase the full game. I have absolutely no complaints about this game.

My complaint is directed toward the delivery service, DHL. I had paid for 2-day shipping, though I purchased it just before Labor Day, so I was prepared for it to be a day or two late. I purchased something else, from a different site, on the same day, and also paid for 2-day shipping. The product from the other site arrived the day after Labor Day. This didn't arrive until 4 days later. I checked the website several times to track the shipping. It had been noted that there were 3 delivery attempts. 2 our of those 3 I know were false, given the claimed delivery attempts; at those times there was at least 1 person besides myself in the house awake and alert, and no one heard any delivery attempt. Only the 3rd claimed attempt might have happened, but even that was questionable. Finally on the 4th day (3 days beyond the shipping I had paid for), I received my delivery. If you're given the choice, don't go with DHL....more info

  • Cookie cutter MMO. Stale & Boring
If you're looking for a good single player game, or enjoy sitting aorund for hours talking to people you don't know on the internet, WoW might be right for you. Otherwise steer clear and save yourself a boatload of cash.

Leveling up to 70 can be fun, there is enough to do to avoid grinding at least with your first character. Once you're there though, the game screeches to a bloody halt.

PvP is lackluster, pointless, and wholly unenjoyable.
Raids are enjoyable if you like sitting around for hours.
Every character in late game is identical both in equipment and abilities for a given class.
Blizzard also decided to completely ruin Warcraft's back story too.

    Play something else....more info
