About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.

Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

  • BioGlide motion technology allows for a comfortable and natural 18-inch elliptical stride
  • BioFit footpads and handlebars offer a comfortable feeling while working out
  • Features eight computer controlled resistance levels
  • Grip heart rate monitoring on handlebars helps you track your workout
  • Measures 59 inches long by 26 inches wide by 68 inches tall; includes a water bottle holder and transport wheels

Customer Reviews:

  • Sturdy and Solid
What a great purchase! I researched ellipticals for a few months before I decided to purchase the Schwinn 430. I was looking to spend between $500-1000 on one and I could have spent more on another model, but ultimately I decided to listen to all the wonderful reviews and trust other users of this elliptical. I am very glad that I did.
The machine itself feels very sturdy and is almost all metal parts. The elliptical stride is very smooth and the resistance levels change gradually from levels 1-16.
Assembly took less than 2 hours. My husband built it for me and had absolutely no trouble. All the parts lined up nicely and the instructions were clear and straightforward. The display is not backlit, but it is still very clear and simple to read. I like the programs the machine has to offer, I am definately not bored yet.
The machine itself is very quiet, I have had no knocking or unusual noises. It performs very well. I have used ellipticals at the gym and this one compares nicely and I didn't have to spend a fortune on it!
All in all, this was a wise investment and I plan to use it for years to come....more info
  • Schwinn 430 elliptical
After reading several reviews and researching for days I decided to take the plunge and purchase this machine. Putting it together was not a problem. I must say I tried to not over tighten the moving parts as per all the recommendations. It was quiet for a few days and has squeaked ever since. Even falling apart at one point because it became too loose. My computer shuts off also mid workout. Nothing consistant. Some days it works fine. I am planning on putting a call into service and can only hope it won't be too much of a hassle. It's a pretty basic machine to operate, and I'd love to love it but it is a little frustrating to constantly be messing around with the nuts and bolts. It's the first elliptical I've ever owned and perhaps I got what I paid for it....more info
  • Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer
After weeks of reviewing and deciding which elliptical would be the best for us, we decided on the Schwinn 430 - largely because of the feedback from consumers and the experts - the transaction through went "flawless" and the shipping/shipping company ABF was great (the driver actually brought the elliptical into my living room and helped me unpack it to make sure everything was ok before leaving) - assembling the elliptical only took me about two hours - instructions where good and all the parts where clearly labeled and matched the instructions - however, after only using the elliptical two days the computer/control pad went bad - I called Schwinn and after they registered me and the elliptical after about three days they sent me a new computer/control pad - the call and service with Schwinn was good - and now we can get back to the business of getting in shape - our recommendations are...if you looking for a good value, backed by a solid company and it's your first entry into the elliptical world, then buy the Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer! ...more info
  • Great Elliptical
Like many others, I searched for several months before actually purchasing an elliptical. In all that searching, I came back time and again to the Schwinn 430, and I finally bought the thing, based largely on the reviews I read here. It was a great purchase. It was delivered in seven days. It only took about two hours for my friend and I to put it together. The only problem we had was that some of the fasteners were called one thing in the instruction book, but a different thing on the card that actually labelled the fasteners. Otherwise, the instructions were well-written. We've been using the elliptical for about two weeks now and have no complaints whatsoever. There are no squeaks, rattles, or shakiness. It's a quiet, awesome machine. It would be great to have a backlit LCD screen, but as others have said, it doesn't affect how great the machine is and for this price you have to sacrifice something or another; in my opinion, the backlit screen is the least important aspect of a great machine, so it is an acceptable sacrifice to me. It is a big machine, but the wheels in the front and handlebar in the back make it easy to move. (Not that I would suggest regularly moving it - it does weigh 150+ pounds, but if you do have to move it now and again, it's not a huge ordeal.) All things considered, so far I'm thrilled with my purchase. ...more info
  • Schwinn Elliptical Trainer Rocks!!!
This is a wonderful piece of fitness equipment. Easy to put together and even better to workout on. My husband did some research and found that this piece of equipment was one of the better priced elliptical machines. My only complaint was that I had to wait almost an entire month after I purchased the machine to receive it....more info
  • Major support problems
Support from Nautilus, the manufacturer of the Schwinn 430, has been terrible so far. The two plastic foot pedal bushings that secure the shaft under the left foot pedal to the leg broke in half during assembly. And twice, Nautilus has shipped the wrong parts, even after explaining the problem to them over the phone and through email and receiving assurances both times that they clearly understood the issue. Now two weeks later, we still don't have a working Elliptical.

Update: After a third call, they are sending out new parts again. But, they denied my request for expedited shipping. So I'm waiting another week.

Second update - March 3rd: The correct parts arrived a couple days ago but they are not user serviceable. So I'm going to place a 5th call to Nautilus. After a month, I still haven't been able to use the elliptical yet.

Third update - March 7th: I called Nautilus again on the 3rd and they told me that I needed a new left leg and that the parts they shipped out the previous three times were incorrect and not user serviceable. The left leg arrived today and the foot pedal does not fit though the bushings that are attached to the leg. At this point I'm livid and extremely frustrated. Nautilus has been completely incompetent so far.

Fourth update - March 15th: We managed to fix the foot pedal bushing problem ourselves with some help from my family by carving some of the plastic out with a pocket knife to make the opening slightly bigger. We also replaced the plastic surround around the flywheel that cracked during shipping. That part was also obviously not intended to be user serviceable but with a lot of patience and help, we were able to fix it ourselves. Otherwise, we would have had to wait another week for a replacement flywheel.

Overall the elliptical seems very nice and Nautilus support was always friendly over the phone. But they made numerous mistakes and obviously don't have enough training to understand the consumer products they support. Unfortunately, if I had to do it over again, I probably would have purchased something else from a store. 95% of you will probably never run into problems. But if you have to call support, don't expect it to go smoothly....more info
  • Awesome Elliptical
So of course I was concerned before I got this, that I would be getting what I paid for. Something that squeaked loudly all the time, or was impossible to put together. Not true for me. I've had it a month, and it is real quiet and smooth. Putting it together took at least 3 hours, but I also did it myself, and took my time. I'm male, and can put stuff together, but i'm no handyman. Still, I handled this on my own, and the instructions are real simple. As for the workout, it's pretty tough. Even level one is a tough workout for a half hour, and I have yet to push it up over level 3. It's just what i need, a machine that can fit in the corner of the room, give me a sweat, and keep me in shape. I recommend this machine for sure. Hopefully, it doesn't fall apart. I've had to re-tighten the screws once, but that could have been my fault on assembly. My girlfriend loves it, she is 5 foot 3, and the stride is fine for her. I'm 6 feet, and the stride is perfect as well. Glad I didn't spend 1500 for some fancy machine....more info
  • Mark M.
Great machine for the price. Assembly was simpler than anticipated and easier than other reviews proclaimed. Control panel could be backlit, to make it easier to read. A fan would be nice. Added a small 6" clip- on from the hardware store. Programs are simple to use, but I'm not sure about the relevance of entering your weight. Doesn't seem to make much of a difference in tracking the number of calories burned during the workout. Manual settings are easy to use. I'm impressed with the tensioning system and the smoothness of it's operation. Overall a smooth action with good stride length for both me and my wife....more info
  • Great Deal
For the price, this is a great, near gym-quality machine. It's footprint size isn't as large as a full gym model which is nice. I've had the machine for about 8 months and it is still rock solid. The pedals did begin to squeek a little so I sprayed a little WD-40 on the connections underneath and that fixed it. I'd highly recommend it....more info
  • Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer
I took me 2 hours to setup the elliptical. Very easy to install and step-by-step instructions was very helpful. I like the elliptical operation, very easy to use and smooth. Did develop the squeaking noise after first 20 minutes of the use, but fixed by loosening up the nuts at the arm joints. I would recommend to friends and family. It is a good buy at this price....more info
  • Schwinn 430 Elliptical
SCHWINN 430---The shipping carton was approximately 42 x 15 x 36; shipping weight 170 pounds. I had it shipped to my workplace and took it home. For the extra hundred bucks shipping we got much quicker delivery. Instead of waiting for 2-3 weeks it arrived in 3 days.
The assembly was quite easy with my wife and I working on it; exactly an hour later it was ready to use.

The machine itself is quiet, and it gives a really good workout. There are more than enough programs and levels for anyone to utilize, be they newly-reformed couch potato or hardcore physical trainer. The many reviews criticizing the non-lit display were a concern, but by no means should that scare you from purchasing the 430. The only reason I gave it less than 5 stars is that, when you're moving above about 6 MPH, it does tend to shake a little (but just barely).

The only problem I've had so far is the water bottle holder. I guess I'll have to buy shorter bottles, because the tall bottles fall out of the holder unless you're doing about 2 MPH.

Overall I couldn't be more pleased with this machine unless it did the workouts for me. Considering price and quality, the Schwinn 430 has got to be the best deal available for a home-based elliptical. ...more info
  • Schwunn 430 Elliptical
After having purchased another brand of elliptical trainer (ProForm) and having terrible problems, both with the machine and their "customer service" I shopped around quite a bit this time. I studied reviews, talked to people and generally, did my homework before settling on the Schwinn 430. Honestly, the only problem (if it can be considered that) was that it took a "while" to assemble the machine. That said, I have been completely satisfied since day one. For the money ($[...], shipping included) I really don't think you can find a better machine. It's got the display functions you need, and they are layed out in a way that's easy to read and work with. The machine is quiet, as of this point, compared to what I had before, which to me is important. The two best qualities are that it's smaller, because the "wheel" is under the handle bars, compared to a lot of other machines that have the wheel in the rear. BUT, the best part is the work out. It kicks my butt!! Schwinn, you guys have done a great job. I recommend this product.Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer...more info
  • Just got it and love it!
I just received this elliptical on Friday. The box was in great shape and it only took a few days to arrive. My husband put it together in probably an hour. He is very good with mechanical things but said it was easy to put together. We have both used it and it is very quiet. I have been going to a gym and this one gave just as good of a workout. My husband is tall and sometimes finds ellipticals not all that great for his size but he really likes this one. I am glad we bought it....more info

  • Satisfied
My father has this elliptical machine and has been very satisfied with it. He uses his machine hard, and has already gone through a couple of other machines. Knowing, and seeing how hard my father uses his machine, I figured this would be a good investment with me; not to mention that I like how it feels, better than others I've tried. I received it in a very timely manner and in good condition....more info
  • Decent machine. Bad experience; dim witted phone reps.
The set up was tedious, but it's more than a bench so I won't won't hold that against it.
What I will complain about is that the product was missing parts, and when I called to ask for replacements I had the hardest time ever. They claim to know these machines in and out, but they don't know where the foot pedal mount is located. It's obviously people at a telephone reading a book. Then they required I be able to fax for my warranty to be effective, and then that I have a digital camera to upload photos of supposed damage. In the new world, you must have a digital camera, internet, and a fax machine to hold companies liable for the product they manufacture.

The elliptical itself is a decent machine. It's a bit tough for a new person and I wouldn't recomend it to anyone who isn't an experienced, or atleast seasoned, athlete or active person.
I haven't used an elliptical since last summer following a car accident, and I found it fairly tough to get used to. It is what it is though and it'll only make me a better runner. It is sturdy and solid and doesn't lean or feel as though it'll give way like the Big 5 $99 special.

I might be able to recomend it, but I'd sure shop around......more info
  • Great machine - works for us!
After reading many reviews for many ellipticals, this one seemed reasonably priced and the most practical for a couple of 60 year olds. It arrived package intact. IT took me about 4 somewhat tedious hours to assemble & due to some confusion about which screws went where I had to switch a few towards the end of assembly. The programs are a little confusing but we eventually got it pretty well figured out. We are not heavy users, about 5 hours per week and after 2 months of use it has been trouble free & works great. My wife was skeptical at 1st after using a treadmil daily for the past 15 years, but now she loves the elliptical. Pretty much a ditto for the Schwinn 203 recumbent bike....more info
  • Worth the Money and more!
This sturdy, SILENT machine is a dream to use! I love the Schwinn 430! Not only am I impressed with the value-- it is one of the better ellipticals I have used. Small footprint fits well in my cramped house. For so long I was undecided about whether or not to spend so much money, but this was well worth the price. In ten minutes, I can get so much more of a workout than 20 minutes of walking around my neighborhood. I can use it when convenient, and end up exercising a lot more.

Make sure to note, this model does not have a lighted display panel. It is more difficult to read than expected in early morning natural light, but I can already think of a few quick fixes. If a lighted panel is important for you, spring for the more expensive model....more info

  • Excellent Elliptical Trainer for the money!!!
I bought this Schwinn Elliptical for home use because I can never seem to put the Iron down at the gym! At Urban Active (Formerly Gold's Gym) there are 20-30 high dollar Precor fitness machines, life fitness machines, and other nautilus machines that i have had experience with. I must say, so far, I have been really impressed with the quality of the Schwinn 430 for the price when compared to what I normally workout on. I have tested several ellipticals at Walmart, Sam's, Meijer, Dick's, and the Fitness Store that were similair in price but no where near the solid and smooth feel of the 430. Please keep in mind though, you do pay for what you get and this machine is not without its little quirks. Here are my pros and cons for the Schwinn 430.

    1) CHEAP!!! This machine rivals the quality of $1,000 trainers
    2) Compact but sturdy! I expected wobble, but it has great balance. The frame is solid and i do not expect to have any troubles for the life of the machine.
    3) 18in stride - I'm 5'10" 175lbs and prefer a 20in, but It is a happy median for me and my shorter wife 5'6". (Since we will be sharing)
    4) Comfortable Grips - Hand grips are padded and a little skinnier than others. I like being able to get a firm grip when working out.
    5) Heart Rate Monitor - Position is good, appears to be accurate based on my experience with other machines.
    6) Plenty of resistance - I only got it up to level 5 and i was dying after 17 minutes! I normally spend closer to 45 minutes on the precor's at the gym on level 5 or above.
    7) Smooth and Quiet (Knock on wood) - Its still new, but for the most part you could easily watch TV without needing 7.1 surround to hear it.
    8) Programs and settings are simple and you have plenty of options to get a good workout.

    1) You pay for what you get - While putting the machine together you will notice some sub-par welds and rough edges. Everything lined up well, but you can definitly tell its not a $1,000 plus machine.
    2) Cheap display - generic elliptical/bicycle display without backlight and cheap feeling buttons. This really does not matter to me, but i just hope it does not malfunction in the future.
    3) Foot Pedals - This is probably the biggest problem i have with the machine and the reason why it just fell short of that 5 star rating. The foot pedals are cheap flat plastic and do not lift with your heel when moving. This causes a slight tapping sound when you workout from your heel stepping down while on the back side of the rotation. DONT GET ME WRONG - they are still comfortable for your feet, but i would probably expect to add some type of gel pad or cushioning on your own to avoid the constant tapping and cheap feel.
    4) Assembly and Packing - Get ready to spend a couple hours (by yourself) just to unpack the item and get the pieces in line (Slight exageration). This is not out of the ordinary for ellipticals, but it was worth mentioning.

Overall if you follow the pros and cons rule you can see above that there are twice as many pros as there are cons to purchasing this machine. I would easily reccomend this for anyone who is looking to get a good workout at home regardless of your fitness level (Low, mid, high). If you are much taller then me, I would probably say you will "want" (not need) a 20 inch stride for better range of motion. If you are considering this machine PLEASE take a moment to look at the Scwhinn 431. For another $200 you get the same frame and motion, but you swap the monitor out with a nicer one and the pedals are upgraded to fix the problem mentioned above. The 431 also adds a nice little fan and superior cup holder as well. But if your like me your looking for a excellent, cheap, sturdy, machine that will get the job done and not hurt your wallet.

After months of research, my wife and I decided on the Schwinn 430. before buying on Amazon, I called a local retailer, item was not in stock my cost would be 699.00 plus freight if I wanted to wait 4-6 weeks. 5 minutes later i got my confirming e-mail from Amazon that my 430 would be shipped in 10days at 599.00 with NO freight charges. Everything happened just as expected in dealing with Amazon shipment arrived on time and in perfect condition. It took me about 3-4 hours to put together and only need assistance one time. Reading other reviews I made note not to over tighten the bolts on the swing arms and this was good advice. We have had for over a month, 3 people use on a regular basis, the Schwinn 430 works flawless. I am 6'2" and my son is 5'7" the stride is fine for both of us, the action is smooth and quiet. the range of programs fit our family and we are very pleased with the product....more info
  • Still great after a year
I bought this on Amazon about a year ago. It was easy to set up (about 2 hours), all the parts were there and the directions were accurate. I used to use it about three times a week but lately I've been using it almost every day. It has held up very well, it's quiet, a great workout, and my feet are always in a comfortable position (some home elliptical put your feet at awkward angles). On the bad side the heart rate monitor is slow to get a reading and a slightly longer stride length would be nice, but these are minor gripes. It is an excellent piece of equipment and well worth the money....more info
  • Great machine for the price
I recently graduated from college, where I had a big free gym at my beck and call day or night. Not being a gym person anyway, I was looking to get an elliptical at home after finding it my favorite machine at the gym. I already had an exercise bike but had been using that for years and the boredom was starting to threaten my motivation for working out. Knowing that ellipticals tend to be on the expensive side, I did a lot of research to find one that was highly reviewed and at the right price. Being able to buy from Amazon was an added bonus, as I've buy nearly everything from here and have never once had any problems, including this purchase. Shipping was free with Amazon Prime and reasonably fast but, as has been mentioned, you need to call to arrange a time for delivery because they won't deliver until you do.

Once delivered, it was a bit tricky to get in the house and unload the box, but nothing that can't be done. It was going to be set up in my upstairs bedroom so, being a small female, I decided to unload downstairs and take the parts upstairs rather than the whole box as it was heavier than I am. The instructions could have been clearer but I've put most of my furniture and other exercise equipment together myself, so it was doable in about 2 hours. Was missing one screw that attaches the left upper handlebar to the left lower handlebar but it doesn't affect anything with only 3 screws instead of 4. Once assembled, compared to other machines, the space it takes up is minimal.[...]

My first time on it, I was surprised how smooth and quiet it is. I'm not brand new to exercise, just was on a laziness induced hiatus for a while, and I was surprised that I still had to start on level one. Probably because I'm naturally inclined to go fast on whatever equipment I'm using (I get bored and lose interest going too slow), which is tough for me with resistance higher than the first few levels. Nonetheless, it gives a great workout and feels very sturdy and well-built. It's set up on an area rug over carpet, but doesn't wobble a bit. I wish there were more pre-programmed workouts but there are plenty of options to customize your workout manually. Switching between what is displayed is super easy while riding, too.

All in all, it's a great quality elliptical, especially given how reasonable the price is. I'm very satisfied with the purchase, so much so that I've settled on a Schwinn exercise bike too, to replace my old Pro-Form one that I've worn down to pretty much nothing. ...more info
  • A few issues at first, but now I LOVE it!
I purchased this elliptical in Jan 2009 after a TON of research. I found this elliptical to be the best value for the amount of money I wanted to spend.

CONS: It took about 2 hours to set up and when I went to try it out I saw E2 on the console and couldn't set any resistance. We called Schwinn and they sent us replacement wires right away. We switched out the wires only to find this didn't solve our problem. The company then sent out a new motor (which took us 3 weeks to receive) then a service man came out to change it for us. Thankfully this solved the problem.

PROS: Since the elliptical has been fixed it is awesome! I like this elliptical better than the ones offered in my gym. The handle bars and easy to "run" with, the stride is comfortable, offers a few different programs, and is very quiet. Mine is set up next to my 4 month old daughters crib so I can watch her and work out at the same time and she is able to sleep through my workout it is so quiet. The elliptical kind of reminds me of a spin bike as well, I feel like I get two workouts in one if I use the stationary handlebars and lean forward. It is very sturdy, my parents have a proform that rocks if you go more than 6 mph, this one has no such problem.

Overall I really recommend this to anyone who doesn't need a ton of bells and whistles, just a good workout! ...more info

Elliptical trainer was easy to put together, although my wife didn't know the difference between lock washers and flat washers. So, had to take 6 screws out. Assembled in just under 2 hours. Been 3 weeks now and trainer is quiet and smooth. No squeaks as some others have reported, but I didn't torque the screws down, just hand tight and a 1/4 turn. REALLY like the heart rate monitor. Let's you know how hard you are working. Also the Calorie burn indicator is very useful. As the title says, highly recommend....more info

  • Schwinn Elliptical 430
This is exactly what I wanted. I based my selection on reviews by people who had this machine since I couldn't find anyone who sold it locally. I am really pleased with my choice and am SO happy I got this machine. It is great!...more info
  • Excellent Value --- High Quality Elliptical
I did extensive research before purchasing this Schwinn 430. Overall, the value is excellent. I really didn't want to spend more than $650. Amazon's price was unbeatable and the shipping company had it to my house in 4 days from purchase. The delivery service exceeded my expectations.

As for the quality of the elliptical, I would give it a 9/10. The only reason I wouldn't rate it 10/10 is because I need to see how it holds up over the long term. By all objective standards, the unit is very, very solid and sturdy. The bolts/screws are high quality. From opening the box to actually using the system for a quick "test drive", it took roughly 2 hours. I am the type who follows installation instructions verbatim...step by step. Yes, one screw didn't line up correctly so I had to bear down with excessive force but overall the system went together very easily. The instructions were excellent and simple to understand. Follow the instructions step by step and you can't go wrong.

The unit did "squeak" a bit upon initial use but the noise is rapidly lessening with time...leading me to believe that I simply need to break-in the unit. The elliptical action is very smooth and the workout programs are great.

Would I purchase another Schwinn product again? Absolutely. Two words easily describe this trainer: High Quality....more info
  • Squeaky Schwinn 430
During only the fourth use of my new Schwinn 430 elliptical, one of the right pivot mechanisms developed a loud squeal. I have yet to try loosening the screws or oiling the joint. The operation is nice and smooth, and the machine is otherwise quiet....more info
  • Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer
I read many reviews before I decided to buy this product. When I received it, I was not disappointed! Although the box was very heavy, I took the individual components into the house one by one and assembled them by myself. The assembly went flawlessly and only took about 2 hours. Make sure that you familiarize yourself with all components first by consulting the excellent manual. The included tools were a nice touch, and I purchased some lithium grease as advised by other reviews and used it generously on the parts requiring lubrication, even though they were "pre-lubed". All parts are high quality and went together easily. Once finished, the machine operated silently. I convinced my wife to try it out and she has used it several times already, although she is not the "exercise type". The 25 lb flywheel has been mentioned by others, and is key to the quality and smoothness of this unit. For the price, you can't beat this unit and it is compact to boot!...more info
  • A smooth and quiet machine that really can give you some workout
I have been using the Schwinn 430 for about a week, so far so good. It is a pretty good elliptical, quiet, smooth, and has most of the functions that you expect to see in a professional machine. (I used to use one in a sport club for many years)

I read some of the comments on this machine here, and people have been warned about the confusing assembly manual and the assembly process. So, what I did is I went to the Schwinn web site and read the assembly manual and get acquaintance with the parts and installation process. When the machine was delivered (Amazon did a good job, the machine arrived ahead of schedule), I was not overwhelmed by all those parts and the installation ahead. I did the whole thing by myself (I am not an experienced installer). However when you install the main unit (Flywheel) you definitely need another warm body to help you to do that.

It took me about 4 hours to do the whole thing, from unpacking to the finish line. If you follow the process, do one thing at a time, and don't get ahead yourself you'll be fine. Please use common sense when you do the installation. After I installed the console, I did plug the AC adapter to check out my wiring and make sure the electronics are working before I proceed.

This is a very good machine, as I said before, it is quiet, smooth, and has most of the functions you expected from a professional one you seen at a sport club. I think it is so quiet; you can do your exercise while you baby sleeping beside you. This is one mean machine; it really can give you a real good physical training, so far so good for me. Since I just use it for about a week, I will give it a four star for now, after a little bit longer time, and there is no other issues, I may give a 5 stars.
But as up now I will recommend this machine to anyone that is looking for low impact exercise at home.

  • Solid performer, great value
As the title says it does what it is intended to do. I weigh 190 pounds..actually now down to 185 since using the Schwinn. Feels solid, runs smooth, does feel like the ellipticals in the Gym that are much more expensive..time will tell how sturdy but does feel solid. Took a couple of hours to put together but the directions are very clear and logical..just takes a while. There was one small part missing a bushing for one of the bolts..called Schwinn and they sent one immediately in the post..i went to ACE Hardware and bought the part for 89 cents cos i didn`t want to wait a i have a spare! All in all solid performer well worth the money....more info

The only thing I would like to have on it is a fan, otherwise it is a good bang for the buck!...more info

  • Still Satisfied at 1 1/2 years of use
I bought this product for use in a room my wife and I have turned into a home gym. Given that the room is not huge, this product's small footprint was very nice. We also like the solid feel and whisper quiet operation. Our average weekly use is about 5 hours (more when it's too snowy or icy to run outside). The resistance range is good, as well. The only problems we have had are some initial squeeking (solved nicely with some silicon lubricant sprayed on the moving parts -- please note: silicon, NOT petroleum based -- unless of course, you want the lubricant to eat the machine's rubber parts, as other reviewers have noted) and that one of the four bolts for the left-upper arm attachment wouldn't attach properly (the other three hold it in place just fine)....more info
  • Very pleased with two minor gripes.
Very solid piece of equipment. Silent to use. Stride is comfortable, I am 5'11". I put Loctite on EVERY bolt. The only two issues I have is with the computer: I wish it had a backlight (I mouted a booklight over it) and for as advanced as it is it should have multiple user memories to track your progress/history. Other than those (1) star reducing issues I would highly recommend it to anyone....more info

  • Good product
I've only used the elliptical for a couple of weeks now, but I can vouch that it is a well-built, sturdy piece of equipment and gives an excellent workout. I'm a big guy (~240 pounds) and this machine has no problem with me working out vigorously on it. It's smooth and quiet and an excellent option for me to use in my workouts with someone living in the apartment below me. It's very heavy - which is a testament to what a solid piece of equipment it is. I did some research before buying this model, and most of what I read said it's the best elliptical you can get in this price range. From what I've seen, I can't argue with those assessments.

  • Not a bad elliptical - just don't overtighten the parts
Was pretty happy with the elliptical. Like others I was able to reduce some of the noises I was getting by loosening some of the bolts/nuts that I may have overtightened. Still tweaking some of the parts however. I would buy it again....more info
  • So far - so good!
I've had this machine a few weeks now and just love it. It is sturdy and really fun to use. No problems at all. Gives me a much better workout than my treadmill.

I was a little worried from all the reviews about problems with the parts shipped and assembly, but we had no problems at all. All the parts were there and my husband and I put it together in less than one hour. If you think you are missing a part, make sure you look in all the nooks and crannys of the packaging materials. They're hidden everywhere. And, maybe the secret of the holes lining up is not to totally tighten any of the screws until all the the screws are put place. Then tighten down everything. Anyway, my concerns from past reviews were unfounded - it went together perfectly and quickly. We had no problems with the instructions either, maybe they've been refined from earlier versions.

I'm very happy with this purchase. Amazon was quick in shipping and delivery was easily arranged and on time. I recommend this product highly....more info
  • Very pleased!
After much research and trying machines around our area, we settled on the Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer. It's been about a month and after regular use, we have had no problems and feel it was a great purchase. Assembly took about an hour and a half, all pieced were included and directions were easy to follow. We've had no problems with squeaking or any other issues. It is a solid, stable machine with a small footprint.

I am 5'3" and my husband is 6'2" and we each get a great workout. I was a gym rat for years and used Precor machines regularly, so I do have experience with ellipticals and can recommend this machine without hesitation....more info
  • Excellent value elliptical
For the price, the Schwinn elliptical is an excellent value. Of the many models and types my husband and I tested in local stores, the Schwinn had the smoothest mechanism by far. Even when evaluated against larger models at twice the price.

It took my husband much longer than 2-3 hrs. to assemble, but the directions he downloaded, and the tips he found online from other owners, were easy to understand and helpful. It was worth the time, because it runs VERY smoothly and quietly.

The only negative is heavy plastic foot pads. When operating, tennis shoes make a smacking noise that is irritation. We solved the problem by using small pieces of carpet on the foot pads--a tip we read from another owner.

Everything works well and we are very satisfied....more info

  • Very pleased with this purchase.
I've owned the Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer for a month now, and so far I couldn't be more pleased with it and I am very glad I purchased it. Should I have problems with it in the future, I promise to update this review.

I had the delivery man leave it in the driveway, and from there I carried it piece by piece into my house. I used a hand truck to bring the heavy part in (I had to go up a few stairs).

Assembly was easy, and the assembly directions were clear. Since then I've used it daily (I think I skipped one day when I was worn out from cutting trees that fell in my yard after an ice storm), and I've had no problems.

Some reviewers note that their ellipticals began to squeak after a few days of use. When assembling mine, I noted that the parts that require grease had grease on them covered in plastic. I took care to squeeze the grease from the plastic so that most of it remained on the metal parts. So far, no squeaking, and the machine is so quiet (compared to my Schwinn exercycle, my Nordic Track ski machine, and a funky old treadmill) that I can listen to the radio or TV without raising the volume above the level I use when I'm not exercising.

I decided to buy the elliptical after surgery for a congenital heart problem. I wanted a full body workout, which I can't get with the exercycle, and I wanted a quieter, more user-friendly full body workout than I can get with the ski machine. So far I find using the elliptical fun, and so exercising on it does not feel like a chore. After the aforementioned ice storm we were without power for a few days, and I was able to use the elliptical (albeit without being able to change the exertion level) without power. I wish it was possible to change the exertion level manually, as it is on the exercycle and ski machine.

By the way, I'm 6' tall, weigh a little over 200 lbs., and wear size 14 shoes. My Bozo-the-clown size feet fit just fine on the elliptical feet pedals....more info
  • Great Product - Very silent and smooth
Schwinn 430 is probably the best investment we made this year, so far. It's very quite, sturdy and easy to use.

We recommend it to anyone who's looking for an inexpensive elliptical for the home....more info
  • Good choice, high quality, great value
I looked at ellipticals for a long time and chose this one because of the price and the good reviews. It was easy to put together. I did it by myself in 1 hour, its a little heavy though. It is a smooth quiet ride, I love it. It did start to squeak a little but I called Schwinn and they told me to loosen the bolts 1 turn and it never did it again. The only complaint I have is the heart rate monitor takes awhile to get up to my real heart rate but I don't need a number to know it gets my heart rate up. My husband and I both love it and we are 8 inches different in height....more info
  • schwinn ellyptical 430
I tried the Schwinn 420 at a local retailer - and asked if the 430 would feel the same, the answer was yes however the reality is no - I like the smooth ride of the schwinn and the range of motion however the resistance is just to tough to start off - I cannot even move it beyond level 1 - I am an athlete, skier, former health club manager and an avid elliptical user at the gym and yes in understand home use products are usually not as sophisticated - however I wish this elliptical would have a little more variance in the resistance and not be so tough to use out of the gates. Not sure if it will break in - hope so because I do like most everthing else about it. ...more info

  • Average Jeff
We bought this after reading reviews and trying it out at store.
The bad of it is the read-out. I go to gym and like the back-lit better but this is ok. The heart rate takes longer to read than I am used to. Those are the only flaws I have after using it for a few weeks.
I am 5'11" and weigh 225 and this machine doesn't move or sqeak at all. We have it in a basement with 7' ceiling and I just make it without It took be under 1.5 hrs to put together (took a break while assembling). Instruction were clear and parts were labeled fine.
I don't use programs as I just set timer for 30 minutes and sweat away....more info
  • Really nice and simple to put together
This product is really nice, comparable to the eliptical I use at the gym. As stated in the product information, the 'footprint" is reasonable enough to fit in my bedroom. Yeah, you can see it, but the size works to get you into using it daily. It was very easy to put together. I did it in about two hours (including time for loosening screws that I should not have tightened in the first place until both sides were together, my fault) while watching a movie on tv. I recommend this product highly....more info
  • UPDATED (03/01/09) Fast delivery, easy assembly, but needs service right away
We ordered a 430 on February 10th, had it shipped on the 11th (for free with Super Saver...such a great deal), and received it on the 13th. We assembled it without any real difficulty in about 1.5 hours on the 14th.

One piece of advice, as some others have said, is to definitely use your own tools instead of relying on the ones they provide. A good socket/ratchet for the hex-head bolts and Allen wrench bit/ratcheting screwdriver for the other bolts will go a long way. The directions were basically "clear enough," and about par for the course as I've found these things to be.

The trainer worked fine that evening and yesterday (the 15th), for about 35-45 minutes total running time. Very smooth, all the display features, modes, etc. worked just fine. As others have posted, it was very smooth and very quiet.

This morning, my wife went to use it and found that there was a rubbing noise coming from the main flywheel body area, and the machine was not at all smooth when walking forward (backwards was smooth).

I took the arms and legs off and gave it some lithium grease, although I could hear that the sound was coming from inside the flywheel body area. Still, figured it couldn't hurt. While I had the arms and legs off, I rotated the flywheel by hand and found it alternately sticking/rubbing and smooth.

Now that everything's back together, the problem persists. I called Nautilus tech support this AM and they were very friendly and helpful. They tell me that a new crank pulley assembly is on its way via Fedex from Kentucky, and should be here by the 20th. Then, they said that their on-site repair guys will call to schedule an appointment.

    To be continued...

UPDATE (2/20/09): The part showed up via Fedex as expected. We received a phone call the day before saying that we'd get ANOTHER call once they saw the part had been delivered. This call would be the one to use to schedule the service call.

UPDATE (2/22/09): Got a call from a service company that they're coming out to fix the machine next Saturday, the 28th.

UPDATE (03/01/09): The repair guy showed up on time, was very nice, and fixed the problem. Bad tension spring, which probably worked itself out in shipment. Now the thing works like a charm!

  • Why pay more? The BEST purchase we could've made!
THE ONLY CAUTION: It arrived 2 weeks LATE and arrived in a wet box that had multiple punctures. It was pure luck that nothing was super damaged - just some cosmetic scratches. NOW FOR THE GOOD STUFF: My hubby put this thing together in a little over an hour. Super easy, super great directions. SUCH a great size for a smaller area/home (a little more narrow than most machines). The 18" stride is perfect for my 5'4" frame, as well as my husband's 5'9" frame. We purchased the Elliptical GymTough Flex Mat, since the elliptical would be placed on carpet -- The machine doesn't wobble one bit. I researched for HOURS, and I'm so thankful I made the decision to purchase this elliptical! I use it 4-5 days a week for at least 30 minutes a pop. Super sturdy. ...more info
