What We Think

Fun Factor:

(what this means)

The Good: Easy to set up and fun for the whole family; great way for kids to explore everyday objects

The Bad: Takes a little practice to learn how to focus

In a Nutshell: A fun and engaging educational toy with great educational potential

At a Glance

Ages: 6 and up
Requires: 5 AA batteries, TV with video input jack
Magnify Your World
The hand-held EyeClops magnifying "eye" is made of brightly-colored, lightweight, durable plastic and features an ergonomically shaped handle that fits comfortably into small and large hands alike. To operate, simply insert five AA batteries into the "Brain Case," attach the video wire to your TV's video input jack, and turn on the power switch, and you're ready to go!

With the easy-to-hold magnifying lens in one hand, you can focus on any number of everyday objects, such as coins, fabric, your pet's fur and even your own hair and skin. The images will appear on your television, and a zoom dial offers either 100x, 200x or 400x magnification. The EyeClops comes with a focusing lens, a viewing dish and a tube to enable your child to explore a variety of everyday objects safely and easily.

Contagious Fun for the Whole Family
The excitement of seeing objects in your child's everyday world magnified to up to 400 times is contagious and sure to be a hit with whole family. With no software to upload and minimal set-up, the EyeClops can be put to use almost instantly.

The hand-held magnification "eye" is fun to hold and makes it easy for your child to explore their world. Viewing the magnified images on your TV screen in full, vivid color encourages your child to take learning into their own hands and provides numerous opportunities for parents and children to play fun and educational games together. And because the EyeClops is powered by five AA batteries, your child can enjoy several uninterrupted hours of exploration without the need for recharging or replacement.

Although the EyeClops is extremely easy to set up, it does take a little practice to make things come into focus. However, with the aid of the simple focusing gauge on the I.R.I.S. lens that surrounds the magnifying lens, this initial awkwardness is quickly overcome.

On the lowest setting the LEDs occasionally proved to be too bright for viewing lighter-colored objects, and these images could not be seen clearly on the TV screen. On the higher magnification settings, however, this did not seem to be a problem and textures and colors came through flawlessly.

Customer Reviews:

  • Excellent product!
I purchased this product for my daughter and my whole family loved it so much that I bought one for my 60 year old father who plays with it all the time! Very easy to use and clearer picture than the $150.00 microscope that we have, not to mention the picture is as big as the television. LOVE this product!...more info
  • Focus issues
I love the idea of this toy. The main problem is that it is hard for my kids to work it. Sure, they can hold the eyeclops up to any object, but getting the item in focus was really a challenge for them. It took quite a bit of effort for us, the parents, to focus the images. As soon as it was clear enough to see the image, my kids wanted the eyeclps back to "see" something else and then the next item would need to be refocused. I hated taking the toy away from them to "fix" the focus problem, but my kids could not get a clear image for themselves. My kids quickly became bored with all of the time it took to focus the eyeclops and frustrated that they could not see things with it without our help. Needless to say, they have not played with it since....more info
  • disappointing toy for the rave reviews
For all the great news about this toy, we are sorely disappointed. The magnification is great...too great. You can't tell what anything is. The zoom adjustment is too difficult for a child, my husband struggles changing the zoom. As the unit is hand-held with no assisting stand, the image on the screen is constantly "on the move". We're taking this back. Not worth it at all....more info
  • Best toy this Christmas
I really like how easy this toy is for kids to use. I have a 3 and 6 year old and they can both operate and manipulate the bionic eye. Its absolutely perfect for their age. I've wanted a microscope for them to start exploring with and this is one is perfect. I think a traditional microscope would have been to complicated and mostly likely broken during the first use....more info
  • Wow! How Fun! Amazing!
My 6 year old daughter received this last year for Christmas. When we get it out, it's all kinds of fun. You'll hear many sound effects - cool, ewwww, stuff like that. We put it on the carpet, our skin, furniture, toys, blankets, spices, etc. It's amazing. It's almost like a microscope - that you can take anywhere (as long as the cord reaches). My daughter has gotten it out at family gatherings and everyone is always amazed - and interested... "try it on this, focus on that" And it's handle and durability makes it a better option for kids than a microscope. Lots of fun and great price!...more info
  • It's fun for a while, great for playdates!
This is a fun toy for a period of time, especially for groups of kids who want to look at everything they can possibly think of. Easy to share, since the picture is shown on your television. I give it four stars instead of three for that and the truly amazing fascination factor. After the kids run out of things to look at, though, the novelty is done. The package included a Pirate seek game that is fun, but of course once the child has found the "treasure," that is over as well. I wish it lasted longer, but right now it's in the box waiting to be rediscovered. Wait until it goes on sale!...more info
  • Great toy!
Bought this for my five year old for Christmas and the whole family loves it!...more info
  • To the Junk Yard In Minutes
I ain't got the time to tell you how excited my father was to give my son this gift. . .only to find it absolutley uninteresting once you get it plugged in. Don't waste a dime on this thing: you can't see anything; you're stuck in one zoom level; and you have to choose with discretion the things that you want to look at upclose cuz' many aren't even workable because of the static zoom level. This is an overall blek. . ....more info
  • Not just for kids!
I bought this item for my 71 year old father, who collects stamps and coins. Due to age related sight loss, this hobby has been harder and harder for him to pursue. This bionic eye has given him the ability to examine very tiny objects at great lenghts- which is something that he thought he had lost forever. I highly reccomend this item not just for children, but for the elderly who are tired of not pursuing their intersts due to eyesight problems.

  • Three EyeClops, ALL Defective
I wonder what happened to the first review I entered!

At the time, I was waiting for a replacement shipment from the manufacturer to see if a THIRD EyeClops would work, and now I know it doesn't! The EyeClops is said to display in color, but three EyeClops have proven otherwise, displaying only in black & white.

The third EyeClops, incidentally, is even worse than the others. We're now stuck with a black dot that won't disappear from the display. Cleaning the EyeClops lens didn't get rid of it, and the problem is not with our TV.

After having following Amazon's instruction to contact the manufacturer for the replacement of this defective product, and with Amazon's "return window" for my purchase having expired through the process, I'm at the mercy of Amazon's response to my emailed plea for a full refund without a restocking charge. The manufacturer, of course, won't refund my money, but will Amazon?

And, will this review stay posted, unlike the disappearance of my first EyeClops review?...more info
  • Entertaining for everyone!
I got this toy for my 7 yr old for Christmas. So far, everyone (including myself!) has had a blast with this toy. We have used it to look at our skin, the dog's fur, ants, salt, and a bunch of other stuff. It's really been fun and educational....more info
  • Impressive fun and educational toy!
We got this for my daughter as a Christmas gift. She, my wife, and I all LOVE it. We looked at everything within reach of the cable's length with this Bionic Eye. What we couldn't reach, we brought to it! It's simply impressive. Just a few things we looked at- carpet, socks, dog hair, human hair, skin, salt, pepper, sugar...

We leave the zoom feature on 100 because we can't really see very clearly with the stronger settings. I don't think it's a defect, I just don't think we've figured it out yet. The plastic piece that rotates for the focus feature seems a little flimsy, but it has held up just fine so far.

Highly recommended toy and tool. It will amaze and teach you and your child....more info
My 5 yr. old got this for x-mas... but it my husband (33) who is having a BLAST with this thing! He loves to get stuff (from ants and spiders to blood and hair) and look at it. It's really cool and I'm sure it'll provide many hours -hopefully years- of educational fun!!! ...more info
  • Fun but a little disappointing
My daughter loves everything about science from rocks to solar system to knowing how things are made/work. We got this for her for Christmas as she really liked it. The only bad thing is with this one you can only go so far from the TV because it is a Plug-n-play style system and it's hard to really see much in the 400X mode. We had to switch it to the 100x mode for her to really see things like the threads in jeans, etc. The 400x just basically brings up a black blurred screen. Not worth $50 but is worth $20-$25....more info
  • So much fun!
I bought this for my 6 year old nephew and everyone ended up having fun. He ended up having me use it for him since it can be a little hard to focus, but it really was fun. It can be a little hard to use, especially if you're focusing on something that moves, but once you get everything perfect, the picture is AMAZING!! We had so much fun discovering new things and seeing up close what things are made of. Very happy I bought it! ...more info
  • My boys love seeing a bionic or at least magnified world
We first saw this toy at a friends house, when it kept 2 six year olds and 2 four year olds buy for 2 hours! It magnifies anything it can essentially touch, hair skin, we are going to have fun looking for more. Very cool and definately worth the $25 we found this for on Amazon....more info
  • Loads of fun for the whole family!
I gave this to my 6 year old grandson for Christmas and the entire family ended up around the TV checking out all kinds of things. We cannot wait to gather some insects and other creatures to view. Great family fun!!...more info
  • Fun
I got this for my 7yo niece and she loved it. It's fun to see skin up close and dollar bills. It takes a precise touch to get it to focus, so kids may need adult help to focus. Very cool, it was fun for the whole group to see stuff blown up on the tv. It was very simple and quick to hook up. Needs 4 AA batteries. (Doesn't come with batteries)....more info
  • Amazing. Adults took away from kids playing with it!!!
Pretty amazing. Gave as a gift to my granddaughter, as she is so inquisitive. Her Dad just could not put it down. He played with it for 3 hours before giving it back to child!...more info
  • Fun Education
The product description almost seemed difficult, but the Bionic Eye is easy to use and is great fun. My son and I almost battle over who's going to look at what next. I have no complaint about the magnification. It's not made for scientific research... It's great fun for all. Now I'm freaked out about what's lurking in my carpet! ;-)...more info
  • It's ok
The gripes I have for this product is that it is too hard to focus and the light does not light up the images well enough. The pictures shown are obviously not a replica of what this product can make because I have yet to get so good of quality of of it....more info
  • Eyeclops
I bought this for a 8 year old girl with developmental challenges. She enjoys looking at things closely but has trouble communicating. This toy seemed perfect....more info
  • Way overhyped!
I bought this for my daughter for Christmas 08 and we haven't played with it since.

I would not buy again! ...more info
  • It Works!
I did not expect to have to have the eyeball have to actually touch what you are trying to look at, but upon thinking about it, how else are you going to control the distance/focus? Does a creditable job. ...more info
  • what a cool gift!
This is am amazing toy. Very easy to set up, and provides hours of fun for kids and adults alike! Our kids kept running around the house and outside to find things to look at... Watch out, it may be even more fun for the parents!...more info
  • bought this for my grandson and he says it's wonderful
My grandsson thinks this is awesome. It appears to be rather sturdy and works well on the tv screen--so I am pleased with this toy...more info
  • We'll see if the replacement I ordered works.
My 5 year old was so excited to plug this in to start to see things. It was really neat at first. The 400 zoom doesn't work so well (it was hard to get things into focus). But that said, we didn't work at trying it very hard, as within the first 10 minutes, it quit working. I thought it was weird that the batteries didn't last very long, so we put in new batteries. Only that apperantly wasn't what the problem was. It just no longer had power of any kind. Amazon Customer service was very helpful though, and issued me a refund and a mailing label so I can return the defective one. My daughter still wants it, so I am ordering a new one and hopefully it will work. (I am not holding my breath- although when we had it working it was very cool).

  • The whole family loves it!
My 6 yr old son got this as a gift, and although I was skeptical at first, I have now eaten my words. It is a breeze to set up, and once you do, the view is great! My son looked at the carpet, and it was really clear and looked like a microscope. We also looked at his hair, my husbands hands, paper, chicken etc. We went crazy!

Anyone that even slightly enjoys science will love this toy....more info
  • not to shabby
it comes with a little map to find treasure that we all liked using. the only set back is that you have to hold it right up against whatever you are looking at or it will not pick up the image. it was easy to hook up and comes with a stand to set it on. i would recommend for a child a little. my son is 4 and i bought it for him. he lost intrest fast...more info
  • Fun but watch what you spend
The price on this is all over the map! I spent twenty and it was well worth it. The toy has its moments when it doesn't work well, but over all its a lot of fun. Just don't over pay!...more info
  • Fun for the whole family!!
This is a great toy! My 7 y/o got it for Christmas. We were all fighting over using it. He was begging his Dad to let him have a turn. It is fun, and fascinating to see everything magnified.
I hesitated as this is "another screen toy" using the TV. But, it really keeps them busy for a long time, we were searching all over the house for things to look at.
    Highly recommend it......more info
  • Image not clear enough, kids get tired soon
I bought this product based on the reviews. Either I got a deffective product (it doesn't seem to be the case) or the reviewiers have set the bar very low for quality.

The problem is that the image quality is very poor. We see a sort of permanent "ghost image" of what looks like electronic circuitry, in a tone of red. Most of the stuff we looked at (ants, grains of sand, etc) appear very dark, and you can't make out the details. Looking at your skin produces the same results, you don't really see much but a bunch of shadows and vague forms. The poor quality does not motivate kids to use it; after a couple tries my kid gave up on the device. So did I.

The only thing it did well was magnify small print in labels. The enclosed treasure-hunt map has very small print with clues to be followed; you can't see them with the naked eye, but the device shows them clearly.

I do not recommend this....more info
  • PK
I purchased the EyeClops Bionic Eye Multizoom that has a moveable arm on it for our son for Christmas. I knew nothing about it previously, except for what I learned online here at amazon.com in December '08. Our son is 10, he loves science and discovering different things. We just wanted something different to give him than the usual Xbox games, clothes and Nascar-type merchandise. The EyeClops Bionic Eye was TRULY AMAZING from the very beginning! It was SO simple to hook up to our TV and the eye PROVED IMMEDIATELY to be a wonderful show on our TV screen! It showed details of carpet fibers, the face of coins, a person's scalp line and beard (yuck) and those were just a few of the AMAZING IMAGES we focused the eye on. If you get DARING...take a look at the TASTEBUDS ON YOUR TOUNGE with it! Truly AWESOME! Both the young and old alike were "basically fixated" on his EyeClops most of Christmas Day. Since then, our son has taken it onto school with him. The teacher is having a BLAST with it! It was MORE than worth the purchase price. We would highly recommend the EyeClops Bionic Eye with Multizoom if you're interested in having a GOOD TIME!!!...more info
  • Oh what fun!
After playing with this toy at a friend's, (I am 37 and the toy belonged to a 6 yr. old) I decided to purchase it as a gift for our good friend's 5 yr. old. I think the adults at the party had just as much fun as the kids. I highly recommend it. It's so cool to see things magnified (clothes, carpet, dog hair)....more info
  • My grandchildren and nieces and nephews LOVED this toy!!!!!
I ordered this as a toy to keep at my home for when the grandchildren and nieces and nephews visited. Their ages range from 17 to 20 months. They all were mesmerized with the things we discovered! It works wonderfully and kept the kids' attention for a long time. I highly recommend the EyeClops Bionic Eye!!! ...more info
  • fun!
I bought this for my 5 year old grand daughter but my adult kids had more fun with it. It can be a little hard for younger kids to focus. Very easy hook up very and addicting!...more info
  • I wanted to like it...
I bought this toy for my 3 boys (ages 8, 5, & 3). I had read all of the wonderful reviews on Amazon and decided to order it for a Christmas gift. Then I saw the same item at Target for $29.99 so I bought it there instead. My boys do not seem to be that interested in it. They used it for about a total of 15 minutes in the past 4 days. I tried using it and just can't get it to focus properly. It's not so easy to use. We examined simple items like snow, carpet, cat hair, fabric, fingernails and other household items. It was somewhat interesting but the novelty wore off quickly. I don't know if I would purchase this item if I had to do it all over again. Ours hasn't broken but it does not seem to be super sturdy....more info
  • Not sure if it was more fun for the kids or adults.
This toy was a lot more fun than anybody thought. It was a Christmas present for one child, but the whole family was having a blast looking at stuff with it. We looked at hair, salt, skin all kinds of stuff. On a grosser note one of the kids managed to put a booger on it, not something you want to see on your 42' TV. Would recommend for fun and education, but beware, the kids will find all kinds of gross things to look at. lol...more info
  • Great fun for all
This is a wonderful, educational toy that magnifies simple, everyday objects for young people. It shows them the makeup of home furnishings, animals, even human hands, eyes, hair, etc. Good for school experiments and learning in general. We magnified the family dog, carpet fibers, skin, human hair, floor composition, etc. Great learning experience....more info
  • Interesting Views
My 8 year old son and 7 year old daughter received this gift for Christmas this year and have had fun with it. It focuses very well and so far they love it. They found the tree needles and eyebrows, and scaly skin interesting to see. Its too cold for bugs, but I'm sure that will be cool to see too. I would recommend this product....more info
