Product Description

Super Bowl-winning coach and #1 New York Times best selling author Tony Dungy has had an unusual opportunity to reflect on what it takes to achieve significance. He is looked to by many as the epitome of the success and significance that is highly valued in our culture. He also works every day with young men who are trying to achieve significance through football and all that goes with a professional athletic career-such as money, power, and celebrity. Coach Dungy has had all that, but he passionately believes that there is a different path to significance, a path characterized by attitudes, ambitions, and allegiances that are all too rare but uncommonly rewarding. Uncommon reveals lessons on achieving significance that the coach has learned from his remarkable parents, his athletic and coaching career, his mentors, and his journey with God. A particular focus of the book: what it means to be a man of significance in a culture that is offering young men few positive role models.

Customer Reviews:

Easy to read but there are so many little gems in this book to transfer to your own life as a treasure chest of learning. When Tony speaks from the heart we are all better people for reading his most humble and caring words....more info
  • I wish it was called "Common"
I am a pastor. When I officiate at a funeral for someone from the WWII/Korean War generation, I usually tell the folk I dread the day when everyone from those generations are gone because I'm afraid--what used to be--common sense will go with them.

The principles written about in "Uncommon" are not new to me. My blue collar worker father taught and lived the same priciples without reading Dr. Dobson or any other "how-to" book except the Bible. This was passed down and lived by his father.

But it is 2009. The common sense that my parents taught me is now uncommon sense. Im glad Coach Dungy wrote this book! Many a "jock" may pick up this book wanting to learn the techniques to play better football and learn how to BE a better person. I wish this book was required reading for every high school student. Perhaps an edition could be published for use in public schools that would not contain references to God (which would be like having someone drive a car without gas)....more info

  • Uncommon by Tony Dungy
Excellent reading material. I never knew much about Tony Dungy the man. Just that he was a football coach. After reading this book, I find he is much more than just a coach. This is a wonderful book for anyone to read. But it would be an excellent gift for men or even young boys, for middle school, eight grade or high school graduation, Confirmation or Religious celebrations, Fathers Day, or birthdays. He is a wonderful role model. We need more men to be examples and role models like Mr. Dungy.

  • Tony Dungy is an uncommon man!
This book is geared towards men, but as a woman, I enjoyed it and found some thoughtful challanges in this book for my own life, then I went out and purchased copies for the men in my life (husband, son-in-law and son - who are also uncommon men). God Bless Tony Dungy - I'll continue to strive to be uncommon too!...more info
  • The Strength Within
This book discusses the understanding of what relationships mean. The book is written well. Each chapters brings new thoughts of how things should be thought out. What I have gathered from this book is that your values, principles, family experiences, and relationships can be developed with a healthy balance without going with the "flow" or "crowd" to create a uncommon man. ...more info
  • Much needed hope and help for a better life
Taking one's life beyond success in business, the author describes how to be a person of significance and how to make our life truly meaningful.

He reflects on lessons he learned from his parents, his mentors and career and his faith. He provides fresh insight into becoming significant, someone who matters.

A particular focus of the book is what it means to be a man of significance in a culture that is offering young men few positive role models. I personally think this is an excellent thing and much needed.

    Highly recommended.

  • Review for UnCommon by Tony Dungy
Well I'm a huge fan of the Pittsburgh steelers and as most of you might know Tony was a steeler back before being a coach. If your a football fan, father or just interested in a good story about living a Godly life this book is a fantastic read. I recommend it highly to anybody young or old I'm 24 and single with no children and still really enjoyed it. Take a look!...more info
  • Uncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance
This is an excellent book for EVERYONE to read, especially all fathers and mothers. The contents of this book should be taught in high school so students would know what their responsibilities are when they become parents. It should also be required reading for marriage license applications. If we would live by the principle outlined in this book we would have an outstanding society....more info

  • Three Things I Learned from This Book
Tony Dungy, head coach for the Indianapolis Colts, can't help but speak from his faith. It saturates his life, his work and his personal history. Anyone who knows anything about this man knows he's a Christian believer.

His first and previous book, "Quiet Strength," was autobiographical, with a little help from co-author Nathan Whitaker. So it focused on his upbringing in Detroit, the powerful influence of his parents and family, how he came to professional football, his faith, and all of the career triumphs and tragedies that led to the Colts winning the Super Bowl.

"Uncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance" is also autobiographical, but only in the sense that it distills how this man lives his life, or strives to. There is much to admire here -- would that we all strive to live our lives like this man has, and teach our sons and daughters to do the same.

He says at least three things in this book I found especially insightful, regardless of one's faith or lack of it.

First, what you do is less important than how you do it. The "how" ultimately has much more influence and impact than the "what."

Second, the opposite of courage is not cowardice. The opposite of courage is conformity. I had to think about that for a while but he's got it exactly right.

Third, don't let the bad things that happen to you define who you are as a person. Instead, what defines you as a person is how you respond to the bad things, and the good things, too, for that matter.

In "Uncommon," Tony Dungy says obvious things -- treat people well; love and honor your wife; teach and be there for your children; see successes and failures for what they are; character matters. That they sound surprising or "preachy" says a lot more about us and our culture than it does about the author. ...more info
  • Disappointment
It has no substance. The content is very shallow. It is just another book of its kind.......more info
  • Very spiritual read
This isn't a football book. This a book written by a guy who just happens to coach football. It's very insightful and full of positive lessons for living life. Tony Dungy really opens up his soul and lets you know with compassion and grace how he thinks living an 'uncommon' life can be done....more info

  • UNCOMMON Crosses the Goal Line
"My goals are qualitative rather than quantitative. I never aim for a particular number of games to win, but rather for a team that is as good as it can be and guys who are an asset to the community and good role models. ... I measure our teams by how we performed compared to our potential--that's really the only reasonable measurement to use." Tony Dungy

Retired Indiana Colts head coach Tony Dungy and co-author Nathan Whitaker's sophomore book collaboration has created a congruent and well-crafted book, UNCOMMON:FINDING YOUR PATH TO SIGNIFICANCE. I expect UNCOMMON will become as big a hit as their last book, QUIET STRENGTH (2007), and I am pleased to say this book, unlike the latter, which I blasted in an Amazon.com review, will deserve whatever praise it receives. It takes a relaxed yet clear approach, uses strong supporting anecdotes and Bible verses, and keeps a clear focus on its goal: to convince boys and men to strive to become upstanding husbands, fathers, athletes, employers, employees, citizens, to become uncommon.

Who will like this book? Fans of the Indiana Colts, Tony Dungy, and/or football, of course, plus men and women who want guidance from a man who "lives" his Christian convictions and is determined to share these convictions to better the world. It's an easy, but not patronizing, read.

  • Written For The Young -- Anybody Half Of Methuselah's Age (969) Qualifies
"Quiet Strength" made some great points while telling a story. "Uncommon" tells stories while making great points.

The point of "Uncommon" is how to live a successful life. This book will sell because it is a high profile NFL coach with a recent Superbowl victory. This book is not about football -- don't shy away from this book if you think it's too connected about football. The anecdotes come from the football field (and off), but are applicable to everyone.

This book is divided into seven sections (a perfect number). At the end of each section there are questions to help apply that section. Also, the book ends with Tony Dungy answering questions related to each chapter of the book to show how one can apply these, and to also show he is practicing what he preaches.

This is a great graduation gift for your child. This is also appropriate for a youth group, though with 31 chapters it does not fit neatly into the quarter system. ...more info

  • Uncommon and Ayurveda
This Uncommon book on personal significance speaks to an individual's search for meaning. What a great theme! And how well written. I also recommend Ayurveda: A Comprehensive Guide to Traditional Indian Medicine for the West by Dr. Frank John Ninivaggi MD of Yale to read since it speaks about similar themes from a different but highly compatible point of view....more info

  • Being a football fan is not required for reading and appreciating this excellent text
Football enthusiasts recognize Tony Dungy's success as the coach of the Indianapolis Colts, winner of Super Bowl XLI. But many of Dungy's fans don't realize that the man himself counts many other "successes" in his life as the most valuable. Dungy, whose book QUIET STRENGTH was a New York Times bestseller, now writes about achieving a life of real significance. The path to this "uncommon" yet deeply satisfying life is discovered as men learn to evaluate and then channel their attitudes, ambitions and allegiances rightly.

In this seven-part text, readers will appreciate Dungy's wide sweep of general topics, which include developing your core, loving your family, lifting your friends and others, living your full potential, establishing a mission that matters, choosing influence over image, and living out your faith. Each section opens with anecdotal stories of football, life and other pertinent lessons specific to each topic. At the close of every section, Dungy lists a recapping of main points for a punctuated "take-away" plan of execution. Written in a no-nonsense style, readers will find his arguments persuasive and the text easy to comprehend and simple to start carrying out into day-to-day life.

One of the finest sections and most noteworthy for today's men (and those young men who are floundering in fatherless homes) is Dungy's treatise on Establishing a Mission that Matters. Here, men will find detailed resources on developing a life of substance (rather than style), setting God-honoring priorities (and keeping them), being the right man (versus merely doing), following dreams (despite disappointment and discouragement) and balancing life (making sure each part of your life gets enough time and attention).

Dungy has done an excellent job of living out the faith he espouses, and certainly this is evident by the manner in which this football legend has used his platform to benefit others. As he writes, men have multiple platforms from which to make a difference in the lives of those around them. Yet, all too often, busy men will use the excuse of "later" when things settle down, when life isn't so stressful, when the kids are older, etc. When in fact, when later arrives, the opportunity to invest in someone is long gone. As Dungy reminds men, "We all have opportunities to be either `takers' or `givers.'"

Recounting a time when he was called upon to console a young man whose fianc¨¦e had just died, Dungy understood that horrific loss personally, from having lost his own son. So, he was able to give comfort and come alongside another man who felt hopeless. Dungy tells men that you don't need to be an expert, but you have to care enough to get involved and make a difference.

Readers of Dungy's underspoken yet power-packing style will learn how this exceptional man makes his mark on individuals on and off the football field. Being a football fan is not required for reading and appreciating this excellent text.

  • DUNGY continues to inspire me
I am not a football fan, but I admire Coach Tony Dungy's leadership, attitude, work ethic, faith, and generousity. He sees the bigger picture, always, and puts the rest into perspective. "We do what we do, no excuses, no explanations." He has helped so many players, coaches, families, children, fathers. His support for ALL PRO DAD is admirable. His book will certainly continue the momentum and progress his previous works have started. Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices, and Priorities of a Winning LifeYou Can Do It! His books have positively influenced my approach to my own life, family, and career, and I know they will do the same for you. Don't pass on this book. Take the hand off and run with it! ...more info

Tony Dungy has outdone himself in this latest book, Uncommon. The book is a must read for the young men of today who so easily lose perspective of what's really important in life and more often than not turn to the almighty dollar instead of The Almighty. ( young women too) Tony Dungy gives hope with this book.... I really didn't think there were any men out there trying to make an impact on our youth and lead them to God. I really enjoyed Quiet Strength and so reading this book was a must. I found it to be very thought provoking and down to earth.
